Leyaria Venerak

Personal

Name: Leyaria Venerak

Age: 17

Gender: Female

Class: Battlemage

Rank: A-Rank

Guild: Guildless

Tattoo: Left Shoulder | Blue

Face: Xenovia Quarta | High School DxD

Appearance

Height: 5'6"

Weight: 113 lb

Hair: Blue

Eyes: Yellow

Overall: Leyaria is is a young woman with an athletic body, possessing chin-length blue hair with a green fringe on the right side and dark yellow eyes. Generally speaking, Leyaria prefers to wear a skin-tight vestment with pieces that compliment the attire as a whole, all of which seeming to highlight Leyaria's physique as a whole. Often times, Leyaria may also wear an over-cloak concealing the majority of her body, though generally this cloak is made of cheaper material, similar to the one in which would be worn by merchants or travelers. She also wears a small medallion along a chain that comes down from her neck, a last keepsake of her sister's.

Extra: A considerable portion of Leyaria's body - particularly that of the upper body - has been covered with the black taint associated with reckless usage of Demon Slayer Magic.

Personality

Personality: When Leyaria acquired Demon Slaying Magic, her entire world changed, along with her outlook upon it. Having been raised by her sister who was perhaps the only person who she had ever really loved, Leyaria has been reluctant to allow anyone in, terrified of them turning out that their relationship with her will amount to nothing more than that of her parents did; toxicity. This, along with having seen firsthand how people look down upon those who live in the streets, have persuaded Leyaria to believe that genuine good, that charity is a fake concept. In some respects, this has helped her as it has helped her foster a greater independence in being forced to survive on her own, but it hasn't made her any less lonely.

While many people would love the idea of being a powerful wizard, Leyaria has viewed it with a completely different perspective. Having grown up completely ignorant to magic outside of the simple stories that her sister told her, Leyaria does not understand the dynamics of the Magical Kingdom, the balance between the "Light" and the "Dark", or any of that stuff. If anything, it has caused her to view wizards with a very cloudy point of view towards them as a whole. Collectively, she views wizards and the entire world of Magic as something people could have lived without. And while on one hand she wants to hate Magic for effectively killing her sister, a part of her feels like she can't hate it as it is who she is now.

Leyaria does however, view herself responsible for her sister's death, as both a direct and indirect reasoning for everything that happened to her. At times this has led to an enormous feeling of guilt, to the point where she has considered suicide before. Other times, she has wished that it had been her, rather than her sister, who had died. In spite of these feelings, she can't help but feel this overwhelming drive, an unexplained desire to ensure that her sister's sacrifice wasn't in vain.

Likes:

  • Festivals: Growing up poor, there were few luxuries afforded to Leyaria. As such, the times when she was able to have a grandiose time were during the festivals which occurred frequently within Hargeon Town. That love hasn't dissipated from Leyaria, remaining as constant as it had been when she was just a little girl.
  • The Ocean: As she grew up in Hargeon, one of Leyaria's favorite things to do was to sit out on the port, watching as the ships came into Town and then disappeared out into the world. She always imagined what it would be like to be aboard those ships, going off on some exciting adventure.
  • Stories: Being a child and growing up poor was quite a contrast from other children who were more privileged. She didn't have the fancy toys that they did. Children her age viewed her as a street child and avoided her, so she never had many friends to play games with. Ultimately, it were the stories that she most enjoyed, both the fantasies told by her sister of Magic and Dragons, and the stories told by the sailors and adventures who frequented the ports and taverns of Hargeon. Listening to them was always exciting, and even years later, it remains true as well.

Dislikes:

  • Drugs: Though she remembers very little of her parents, what little she does recall where the horror moments, seeing her mother skittering through the streets, trying to find even the smallest bit of coin so that she could get her next fix. It was the memories like this which have so greatly contributed to her utter refusal to even try these drugs.
  • Religious Sermons: After she acquired Demon Slayer Magic, Leyaria sought answers, trying to understand what had happened to her. She thought that religion might have provided an answer, but all she felt it did was condemn her, making her feel that she was less than a person. Understandably, she'd prefer avoiding them as a whole.

Motivations:

  • Living On For Her Sister: When her sister Angma had became deathly ill, Leyaria fell into a deep depression, having convinced herself that she was to blame for it. It wasn't until she was coming close to the end that Angma realized this herself and she had Leyaria swear to her that she not blame herself. While there have been times in which she has wanted to just give up entirely, the memory of that encounter has managed to motivate Leyaria enough to keep going.
  • Gaining Control Over Her Magic: While she herself is no fan nor wants to have the Magic, Leyaria has reluctantly conceded that she will not be able to part with her Magic. As such, the only option she has is to gain control over it, though she has no idea as far as what to do, how to go about trying to understand how to control her Magic, or who can help her.

Fears:

  • Autophobia: Through her life, the only person who Leyaria has been able to count on for support has been her sister; not her parents, not anyone else. With her passing, Leyaria has been left in an effective vacuum, overly cautious of trusting people completely, believing that they are more likely to abandon her like her parents than be there to support her like that of her sister.
  • Her Magic: To an extent, Leyaria is terrified of her own Magic, more specifically the destructive nature of it. To this point, she has only seen it cause pain and destruction, leaving buildings, people, and everything else in its wake in flames. It's the moments like that, seeing the untamed destructive power of her Magic going out of control, that scare her the most.

Magic

Magic Name: Flame Demon Slayer Magic

Magic Element: Fire | Light

Magic Description:  Demon Slayer is a powerful magic learned from ancient tomes and scrolls which allows the user to cast a mixture of an element along with Light. Besides that the Demon Slayers are immune against the element of their Demon Slayer Magic, but not against Light. The magic they cast is always white, this means a Flame Demon Slayer uses white flames. No other magics may use white elemental magic, excluding light magic. When selecting this the user must pick one of the elements shown in the Magic Regulations. When an element is picked it can no longer be picked by another user.

History

History:

"I envy my sister. She was young enough to not know what it was like, seeing mom laid out on the ground, utterly oblivious of everything around her. But I wouldn't change things, if that's what you're wondering. I couldn't bare to have her endure that too..." - Angma

Leyaria never wanted her life to turn out as it has up to this point. Truth be told, there are a number of things in which she's wished that she could go back and correct. But that just can't happen. And so this is her tale, so far. She was born in Hargeon Town, the youngest of two daughters, the elder Angma born 6-years prior. The mother; a woman with the best of intentions, but cursed with an unyielding addiction to street drugs shortly after Leyaria's birth. Their father; a former Rune Knight Captain forced to step down in the wake of his wife's addiction. An addiction which only seemed to get worse as time went and he himself spiraled down into a dependence on alcohol. Between the two, the mixture led to Leyaria's family being displaced, forced from their home to the streets, reduced to nothing more than a family of addicts and beggars.

By the time she was no more than 7, Leyaria awoke one morning to find her father having disappeared, neither having given any indication as to where he went or when he would return. It would not be until several days later that his body would wash up, apparently having drowned within the Marina days earlier. His loss seemed to bear little weight upon the family as a whole, if anything the only person affected in the slightest being their mother. From that point forward, her addiction spiraled into outright oblivion, her children becoming nothing more than an afterthought. It also marked the turning point during which Angma found herself becoming invested as the primary caregiver for the young Leyaria, but left to their own devices, there was little that could be done, especially while under the very limited watch of their addict mother.

In many ways, the mother's death came as a blessing, a burden being lifted off their shoulders. However, it did not change the fact that the now 11-year-old Leyaria and 17-year-old Angma were still living on the streets. The only true solace came in the form of their mother no longer siphoning away what little Angma was able to make at all, yet even then it did not leave much for the sisters. Fortunately, perhaps the first sign of their fortunes changing came in the form of Angma's hiring as a worker within the Port of Hargeon. While not the first profession a young woman might be looking for, but their situation did not leave the sisters with room to be picky. And it seemed by all accounts that things were getting better. For what seemed like the first time that she could remember, Leyaria found herself sleeping on an actual bed rather than the streets. Finally, after years it seemed they were in a good place.

"That whole time, I don't know what happened, what I did, where she went. It was like everything was frozen in time, like I was standing alone in a fog or something. The only thing that I remember was I was scared. I think there was a part of me that never stopped being scared after that." - Leyaria

She wasn't sure why she didn't notice it at first. Perhaps it was out of ignorance that she ignored the signs, but Leyaria wasn't able to simply ignore when Angma collapsed before her. In that moment, her world shattered, panic setting in as the worst possible scenarios began to rush through her head. For nearly a week, Leyaria was in a panic, unsure of what had happened to her sister, what was being do to help her, other than that she was being cared for by some of the best healers in Hargeon. When Leyaria again saw Angma, her heart jumped for joy. It then quickly fell back to Earthland when she saw the cost of her sister's return; the long scar extending from the neckline down to near-midchest, the remnants of an incision required to insert a Magical lacrima near the heart. It was the most extreme of options to take, but the only one to which would enable the elder sister to continue to provide for Leyaria.

That image, the long scar that detracted from Angma's otherwise flawless body, it was burnt into Leyaria's mind. Whenever she closed her eyes, visions of her sister slaving away at the docks, collapsing to the ground, or even darker images - ones she hoped to never come to reality - played before her. Guilt began to build inside Leyaria, wishing that there was something, anything that she could do to ease her sister's burden. Over the past several years, she had begun to develop into a lovely girl herself, looking almost like she was ready to start venturing out in the world herself, hoping to find some way of paying back her sister for everything that she had done for her. She would never get that chance.

The use of Magical items, particularly lacrimas, in medical procedures has always been a touchy subject, a practice in which many will outright refuse to perform. While there are instances were no drawbacks occur, more often than not it isn't the case, and sometimes the results end up being far more devastating than what anyone could have imagined. Unfortunately, this stood to be the case for Angma, having been given a corrupted lacrima, partially infused with demonic essence. Unbeknownst to Angma, the revitalizing effects she was feeling were as much spreading the corruption through her body, to the point where she was left with virtually no options for treatment. It was one thing to treat something like a weak heart with a lacrima, but demonic taint was another thing entirely. Though slow, the only inevitable outcome was death.

"My sister is dying and everyone's saying that there's nothing I can do, that I should just let it go. But how? How can they just expect me to give up on Angma!? It's my fault that this even happened! I can't just let her die..." - Leyaria

For so much of her life, Leyaria had been taken care of, much of that thanks to Angma, it was now time for her to pay her sister back. Rather than concede the prognosis on her sister, Leyaria sought to keep them afloat but struggled. Balancing several different jobs throughout Hargeon, Leyaria barely managed, making enough to just support minimal eating as most was diverted to ensuring Angma was in as little pain as possible. But as time went on and on, the task became all the more challenging, to the point where Leyaria was working herself into the same situation that Angma had found herself in years earlier.

Angma's condition continued to deteriorate, to the point where she was left effectively comatose, with large portions of her skin becoming black as hellish taint continued to infect her body. The effect was felt not just on Angma but also upon Leyaria, who had broken down in little more than a husk, a fragment of what she once was. Inevitability began to sink in, the idea that no matter what she tried wasn't going to have any actual impact on her sister's condition. Had it not been for a chance encounter, she may have.

She wasn't entirely sure just who he was or what "guild" he said he was with. She wasn't even entirely sure of the terms that she had agree to. To Leyaria, it was irrelevant. Magic as a whole had never been something that she paid much heed to, rather just being something that she preferred to live in ignorance of. That the man said he knew of a way to save Angma was all that had to be said to cause her opinion to change, to take the man up on his offer. When they met in the small building that Leyaria had moved them to, her eyes narrowed on the large tome that the man carried. Large, larger than any book that she had seen before. It was in that book, the man said, that the secret to saving Angma was stored.

"I never believed in Magic. Not really. When I was younger, Angma would tell me stories about Wizards and their Magics. She'd tell me stories, stories that she heard, stories that I guess other people had told her, they were incredible. But that was all that I thought it was really, just a bunch of stories. I didn't think that... I never thought that it would have taken her!" - Leyaria

Leyaria studied the tome, her eyes begrudingly reading line by line, not a single word or phrase making the least bit of sense, at least until her eyes reached the last line of the final page. Then, it was as though a lightbulb went off in her head, a vacuum of knowledge seemingly imparting itself into her, a sensation filling her body, unlike one that she had ever experienced before. She was ready, the man insisted, to which Leyaria immediately assumed meant to save her sister. She didn't know had just happened to her, but if it could have saved Angma, then it would be worth it. She wanted to believe that it was would be worth it, and when she breathed in like he instructed, when it looked like the black taint that had been covering her sister seemed to disappear, she couldn't but start to think that maybe the man was right, that this was going to save her! But when Angma didn't move, even after some time had passed, Leyaria had fallen to the lowest possible point.

It didn't make sense! She watched as the taint left her sister's body! She could literally feel, literally taste it as it instead entered her! It should have worked! She pleaded with the man to tell her why it failed, but he just laughed. Leyaria found herself paralyzed as the man explained to her, that there wasn't a thing that she could have done, that Angma was doomed the minute she had that lacrima implanted. She listened, utterly stunned, as the man explained that he had given her power that she could never have imagined! He had turned her into a Demon Slayer! And that she was going to return the favor by becoming a member of his guild, just as she promised.

What happened next was a blur. What's remained fresh in her mind, what Leyaria has not forgotten was the flames, seeing the man who had deceived her only moments earlier now screaming in agony as white fire utterly consumed him. Just as it consumed everything around her. The man, the building, she was encased within a mini-inferno. Terrified, she didn't know what happened or how it happened, but she couldn't help but flash a weak smile, knowing that she would be joining her sister soon. Then, the true miracle occurred. She didn't burn. Even as she tried to walk through the fire itself, she felt nothing; no pain, nothing.

"He was screaming, and I looked up and saw him, I don't know, engulfed in fire! And I looked around and there wasn't a thing that I could see that wasn't burning... And I thought it was the end; that this is what I deserve. My sister was gone, I was this, this thing... I wanted to die, but I couldn't feel the flames..." - Leyaria

Although they investigated, it was never determined by the Rune Knights of Hargeon Town what the exact cause of the fire that burnt down the building was. It was widely believed that Magic played a hand in it, but the reports which document the speed at which it spread have prompted the case to be a case of failed arson, with the remains of the male individual being that of the guilty party. Well before then though, Leyaria had left Hargeon Town, disgusted with herself, blaming herself for the death of her sister, the name that the man had uttered to her still floating in her mind. Demon. Demon Slayer. It was just a fancy name for the curse she was afflicted with, an uncontrollable manifestation of Magical power, one in which left nothing but destruction in her wake. She had become an unpredictable walking inferno and as more and more of her body becomes covered in the same black taint that she recalled seeing Angma in, at times she wishes that it would just kill her too. But unfortunately, it has become the life that is left for her, that of a Demon Slayer.
