Kerii was relieved when Eryll immediately got her message. Not only did he understand, but he reacted quickly too. He had good survival skills. The two ran up and quickly climbed into a tree. They were on two separate ones, but they were right next to one another. Sitting on the edge of the thick branch, she scooted herself a little closer to Eryll, so she would be able to talk with him in a quieter voice. Just because the lycans didn't need excellent hearing to pin down the location of their prey didn't mean other predators did not. In fact, come to think of it, some animals were better adapted to use their hearing rather than something else like smelling.
After realizing that they were not going to be able to climb up the tree to devour the two elves, the pair of lycans walked off. Just barely through the mist, Kerii could see that they were meeting up with the rest of their pack, or at least a few other members of it. She didn't know how many tended to hunt together, but regardless, Kerii's theory was correct. If they just ran in a straight line, those others would have them completely surrounded. It seemed that Eryll had seen the other lycans as well and complemented Kerii on her quick thinking.
"Thanks," she mumbled, not wanting to make too much noise.
A few moments went by and the lycans were still out of sight, but that didn't mean they were completely gone. The fog was thick in Aldenwald, and they likely used it to their advantage. There was always the possibility that they were staying just out of sight by lingering in it, waiting for the two elves to drop from the tree, but then again they could have moved on to hunt down another meal. Eryll asked if Kerii saw anything and she shook her head.
"But that doesn't mean they're not there. I say we wait for a while and then go," she whispered. By "a while," she meant oh, an hour, give or take. Unless something disturbed them in the trees, if Eryll asked Kerii if it was safe yet, she would say no until that hour was up.
While waiting, Kerii really hoped that nothing was in the trees. Though there was an abundance of nocturnal creatures, not a lot of nighttime hunters tended to live in trees or be adept at climbing them either. It came to Kerii's attention that there were vampires as well, but she didn't quite think of them as savage of hunters as wolves were. She also didn't know if they would necessarily come into the woods to feed. She had always thought that they needed to feed on human blood, simply because that was all she heard of them doing, which made her wonder if animal blood was a viable option or not. If they could only indeed feast on human blood, Aldenwald probably wasn't the best of hunting grounds... but rumors stated otherwise.
