It was Haru who got the letter this time. The page walked in, handed the envelope, saluted him and bolted out before even he could excuse him. He didn’t think much of it until he saw who the letter was addressed to. It said ‘Akira Shimada’; not his name. “Hey… This-” he began, but saw the Page turn the corner rather swiftly, acting as though he couldn’t hear him.

Haru shook his head in disbelief. Even the riff-raff had gotten the nerve to disrespect him and Akira, thanks to the drama caused by the overreacting officials. He pocketed the letter—without reading it—and made his way towards Akira’s office. He knocked on the door before entering and handed her the letter. “It’s for you. I saw the Page walk in to give it to you. Since I was on my way here anyway, I said I’ll deliver it,” he lied. She almost always saw through his lies. His eager explanation as to why he was delivering her letters was probably a red flag already.

“Is it Nilan again?” he asked, trying to change the subject. He had become familiar with the Inspector’s handwriting by then, given the number of letters he had sent the two of them. The Lieutenant figured there must be some progress with the plague case and he needed their help once again.

Akira Shimada
There were boxes all over the place, scattered files and papers covered most of the surfaces. The shelves sat there, bared of all their contents, much like the cabinets. She's rolled them all open and basically gathered the contents, and allowed them to spill onto the surfaces of the room. Some of the stuff wasn't even hers, she'd barely earned this office and it was already going to have to be vacated again. The task of leaving it absolutely clean for the next Captain-Commander, somehow fell into her lap.

She had a nasty idea as to who had staked their claim on the damn room. Honestly, the place didn't even mean much to Aki, she'd always been the sort to work in the field. Recently, she hadn't even been using the quarters, she'd resorted to renting her own room in the apartments instead, to avoid having to deal with her colleagues. Her task was not an enviable one. Then in strode Tsuru, making a monumental task, essentially close to insurmountable.

'What is it now?' she'd said as a way of a greeting, assuming it wasn't anyone she knew but some Page sent to relay a message about the urgency of her task. But alas, it was Tsuru with a letter from Nilan again. 'Doesn't he know I'm almost on my way out?' she retorted with a soft hiss before snatching the letter. If she didn't have so much more on her mind she would have caught onto Tsuru's little ruse.

Haru blinked and bit his lips, trying to swallow the laughter. “Uh… You need help” he stated, as he began picking up things, collecting the folders in one box, loose papers in another, and so on. It would seem the prodigal Captain-Commander wasn’t good at everything she touched; packing being one. “Yeah… He knows. Probably why he is rushing the investigation so that he doesn’t lose out on your expertise,” he said, as he tip-toed around the floor strewn with a million things.

He was actually dreading the day when this case would be solved. Not that he didn’t want to stop the plague from spreading; of course he did. But when it ends, that also meant the two of them won’t have any more reason to see each other. After what happened with Baldanti at the gathering, and then with half the high-ranking officials suspecting foul-play on the murder case, any chance of Akira staying with the Knights was now non-existent. This was probably going to be the last one they worked together on officially.

“How about we go deal with whatever Nilan has and then come back to finish the packing?” he asked. It was clear that the task had drained her quite a bit. He figured a change of scenery might help. Besides, watching her pack was a constant reminder of the fact that she was leaving and he wasn’t sure how long he could take that.

Aki continued roaming around the office haphazardly picking up things, putting them in a box and then emptying the box back onto the floor. Tsuru was already thinking of possible ways to organise that made more sense than the methods she'd tried applying. 'I... guess I do.' she responded bitterly. The last thing she wanted was to have Tsuru be the one to help her pack. Having him in her proximity was likely to make her delay the process, if nothing else then subconsciously.

When he suggested that they solve the case first she huffed softly and muttered something about how Baldanti was probably going to start making things tough for Nilan too, for the inspector requiring her services when she was commanded to clear out her office by the next captain-commander in line. Then she shrugged, dropping the box she was holding with a decisive thud, what happened after she temporarily left, was not something she could concern herself. Based on merit alone, Nilan's case definitely required their attention far more than Baldanti's little power move.

'You're right.' she said, tearing open the letter to scan the contents quickly. He was rather curt and matter of fact, either he didn't want to waste his time writing plesanteries and waste Aki's time for having through sift through it, or... his request was a grudging one. She quickly summarised his request before tossing the letter onto the pile of papers on the floor. 'I should just set fire to it all.'

Haru laughed at her suggestion. He knew who was going to get the office after she left. “Well, they did talk about repainting the office. Maybe he would appreciate the charred black,” he said, grinning. He knew she was just joking. She couldn’t possibly be suggesting that she burns all her records. People already had it easy pinning things on her. She didn’t have to make it easier by doing stupid things like that. “Let’s go,” he said, dropping the last bunch of loose papers in the respective box.

Their walk to Nilan’s office was silent and awkward; thankfully, he was just two floors away. When they reached, Haru knocked and the inspector asked them to come in. He wasn’t smiling upon noticing them, like he usually did. Nilan remained extremely formal and professional. He began explaining the situation; how he believes he has identified the person responsible for the plague. But, as always, he needs more proof before he can nail the guy.

“I have several reports claiming that he hangs around the edge of the forest. Some even claim to have seen him vanish into a secret cave,” Nilan said, handing them a map with the locations of all the reported sightings marked on it. “We need him alive,” he added, emphasizing the last word and looking sharply at Akira. Haru understood why, and he was certain Akira did as well. Killing him wasn’t going to help them stop the plague. If they could get information about the nature of the plague out of the culprit, it would be a lot easier to counter it. However, Haru didn’t like how the inspector implied she killed every culprit she laid eyes on.

“Right,” Haru said. “If you are so scared we will kill him, why ask us then? Why not send Captain Baldanti?” he retaliated. He was done with the passive aggression from the Inspector. If he had something to say, he should do so like everyone else did.

Momentarily Aki paused, a glint in her eyes that may have betrayed how seriously she was considering it, even though it was just a brief emotion. Of course, she decided against it, given that she hoped she'd wrest the office back from Baldanti eventually. She was glad Tsuru missed that look and took her words in jest. Nilan's coldness had been the last straw on her back. She'd always had a bit of a tumultuous relationship with the Knights, she loved the faction and its potential as much as she hated what it was often reduced to in the opinions of others.

So she leaned against the closed door and let Tsuru take the lead even though he'd addressed the letter to her. Nilan didn't seem to mind, he was used to them speaking for each other. He addressed Tsuru's question calmly, still maintaining a stoic, professional demeanour. He explained that Baldanti was busy and the two of them were efficient, but there was definitely concern about their approach.

He then went onto appeal to their sense of duty, offering them the opportunity to drop the job should they choose, but reminding them that the town was in grave need of all the aid they could manage after the incursion. Aki's acceptance must have surprised Tsuru, but she was far beyond allowing these things to chaff her. 'Will ask around, if it all checks out, we'll head to the forest.' She left, but maybe Tsuru would stick around for more.

Haru couldn’t help but let out a chortle when Nilan said Baldanti was ‘busy’. He wanted to start a guessing game as to what useless task the Captain must be busy with, but chose not to start a sledge fest with Nilan. It wasn’t professional and he would rather just walk out like Akira was planning. For a moment, that sounded like a great idea. All this time, he could handle the politics within the faction either because he had his partner beside him, or he was isolated from it while he spent the time training with Zade. Now that Akira was leaving and he was expected to spend more time solving cases with other high-ranking officials, he wasn’t sure he could handle it alone.

As he pondered his options, Akira—surprisingly—chose to accept the mission. She didn’t say anything more and left the room. Haru looked at Nilan and sighed. He wanted to say a lot of things and it seemed Nilan understood that as well. But he chose not to, and the inspector was grateful for it. He couldn’t leave without throwing some shade on the Captain, however. “Easy to not make any mistakes when you are busy doing nothing,” he said with a smirk before leaving. He caught up with Akira and the two made their way into the town to begin the investigation.

Akira Shimada
Tsuru's attachment and loyalty to her was heartwarming. He didn't really need to take her side as vehemently as he did. However, when he mentioned mistakes, Aki was just a little irked. She didn't make mistakes most of her moves were deliberate and carefully thought out. Perhaps it was time they talked about exactly what transpired that caused Aki to be painted as the black sheep so thoroughly. Most of the rumours that flew around about her, seemed to highlight the fact that she simply eliminated anyone she thought was a threat to any establishment she deemed worthy. No one talked about what exactly provoked her to make the decisions she'd made.

Now was not the time. Considering that a lot of the folks within Orchidia were wary of her as much as they admired her, she took Tsuru's aid in corroborating all the data that Nilan had presented. She had him ask the questions and investigate while she assessed the responses. She trusted the inspector enough to have skipped this process altogether, but it seemed that Nilan himself had wanted his facts checked. Perhaps he hadn't done all the work by himself and didn't trust his underlings as much. Whoever had done the background check had been pretty thorough. Indeed, a fair few townsfolk had witnessed a hooded figure lurking about the forest in the outskirts. For them to keep that image in mind despite life providing them countless other distractions, no doubt, did attest to the importance of the detail and the general suspicion around this person.
