After a few minutes passed by, Kaz saw two carriages approaching. one of them was pulling a large cart behind it. The wheels rattled as they approached and came to a stop a few feet from him.
"You must be the mage here to escort us through," the driver holding the reigns said.
Kaz nodded back in affirmation, "Yeah that's me. Kazimir with the rune knights," he answered and reached up to shake the man's hand.
With that done the man gave Kaz's hand a slight tug and brought him up to sit next to him. "Well, it's good to have you aboard. Once we get there, you'll have your pay," the man said as he whipped the reigns and spurred the horses to move onward.
The carriage began to roll down the way until they were out of the main city and kicking up dirt on the path to the next town. The other carriage was close behind.
Kaz kept a watchful eye out. This was the first escorting mission he had done in a while. The route was fairly calm. Thin trees dotted along the sides of the road. The only sound was the bumping of the carriage against the uneven ground.
Kaz leaned back against the wooden carriage and closed his eyes. His ears and sense of smell remained alert but he rested as the next hour went by. His griffon was high in the sky watching from above.
His ear perked up. A rustle in the trees changed the atmosphere. He opened his eyes leaned forward. "Stay straight. Don't panic as best you can," he looked the man in the eye, "I'll take care of it."
The rustling in the trees got faster. Something moved through them at an alarming rate. A movement was more akin to something on the hint than an exploring animal.
