The humid weather of Orchidia was quite the change of pace for the mercenary. The hundreds of vines, plants, trees and thick layers of moss covering the streets made for a rather peculiar climate for the heart of a city. Normally, a street as shaded as the one he was now walking would be on the cooler side. Even Orchidia, devoid of mountains in the surroundings but known for its particularly strong sunny days was more bearable than the climate he was feeling that day. It was a strange combination, the shade cast by the tall mountains of the surroundings protected him from the rays of the sun. However, the hot day and the large amount of vegetation littering the streets turned the place into a hot-humid mess. It was almost unbearable, and Kenzo was already sweating even after just a couple of minutes in the streets. The thought of passing on working that day crossed his mind as soon as he set a foot outside his inn, but a voice inside told him that he knew better. There was a task at hand. Kenzo had an objective. He was to collect information all throughout the land for Advent World and come back to report with Finn. As a newly established guild, they still needed to expand their connections in Fiore. If they were to enact their ultimate plan, it wouldn’t be enough to conform with only the West of the country. They would need to eventually turn their sights to the North. Or at least that was the initial plan. Nevertheless, Kenzo quickly dissuaded his mind on aborting the mission for the day. Instead, he decided to cope with the heat and sweat and make his way to the city center, where he would be getting a new job to complete that day.

He had made the travel to the square the day before. He had accepted a quest from a rather weird fella and had honestly come to regret every second of it. It had been one of the most bizarre quests he had ever taken, and boy had he done lots of quests so far. In short, Kenzo helped out a wacko person that thought of himself a badass detective fake a crime scene so the people of Orchidia would believe more in him and he could increase his reputation in their eyes. The merc was someone that didn’t usually care about what other people did and thought, it was of no consequence for him how others lived their lives. However, it had proved to be quite the strange experience, nonetheless. What Kenzo didn’t expect, was that he would live the same experience that day too.

As he approached the request board, Kenzo had to make his way through the crowd in front of it. ”Coming through, coming through. Let me take a job while you guys stare at them endlessly.” It was a sight he had grown accustomed to watch. Many mages and adventurers in Fiore were the same. There was lots of qualified and strong people running around the country, but there were definitely more posers and wannabes in proportion. People that stared blankly at the request boards and never managed to gather enough courage to tear one off the wooden boards. Maybe it was a lack of confidence in their abilities or maybe they were just too lazy. Either way, it mattered not to the blue haired warrior. The only thing that meant for him was that he’d need to force his way and that there would be lots of quests available for him to take. As they hesitated to tear a paper off, he finally made it to the front of the board.

Trying to avoid the same mistake he did the day prior, Kenzo read carefully the names and qualifications of the employers this time. He didn’t want to cause a misunderstanding once again. “Owner of the bakery” – Pass... “School teacher” – Pass… “Local Smithy” – Hmmm, pass… “Master Detective” – Heh, not falling again for your tricks dam Dex Miller… “Head Guard of the Muramasa Nobles” - Hoh? I’ll be stupid if I don’t take this one! [i] Thoughts raced through his mind as he read silently each and every request in the board. Finally reading something that caught his eye, the mercenary tore it off the wood before anyone else could think of beating him to it. Kenzo had found his employer for the day. [i]”Head guard for the Muramasa royals huh? This dude must be quite the big shot. I’m really looking forward to meet him and see what kind of job he’ll have. Hopefully it’s got something to do with fighting, I’ve been itching ever since the Majura Gallery incident.” Kenzo’s mind was more active than normal that day. For some reason he was restless from the weather.

After finding at last the person described in the quest paper, Kenzo couldn’t help but feel utterly disappointed. The man that had posted the job was called Jelies Sov. Unlike the day before, the blue haired man had not misread or mistaken the guy. Instead, it was not quite what he expected. Jelies was indeed the head guard for the Muramasa noble family, the rulers of the city. However, it was obvious from looking at the cocky smile the man held and the aura he projected that he was an opportunist with the devil’s luck. He had made his way up the ranks of the guard by bluffing and asking others to take the jobs for him. In a way, he reminded Kenzo of a certain female rune knight from Era he had gotten to know in the past year. The difference was that she was actually pretty skilled and strong but had an enormous ego that prevented her from following most of the orders she was given by her superiors. Since she came from a wealthy family, she could pay others to go on the errands she was supposed to complete.

”Bwahaha my friend!!! Glad you decided to accept the job! You look quite like the fella I needed for it” A loud voice came off the man, exuding confidence. ”You see, there’s been lately rummaging around a very strong outlaw that is causing trouble in the city. Ever since the scandal in Era and the nasty stuff that happened in the capital, the Rune Knights have simply had their hands too full to deal with him, so they haven’t been able to capture him yet. However, the cheeky bastard has dared to issue a challenge to me!! Can you believe it? Bwahaha he’s quite the ballsy one” Kenzo joined Jelies’s in his laugh even if he didn’t intend to. The guys form of laughing was too contagious to not do so. ”Anyways, according to him, he would surrender himself if I won in a duel against him with the condition that if he won, all of the charges against him would be removed. Bwahaha isn’t he nuts?!” The big guy started to pat Kezo’s back with strong slaps. ”Of course I accepted the duel! And the rune knights agreed to the conditions. Everybody knows there’s no way I would lose to such a mob thug.” Tears started forming on the guy’s eyes, and he dried them out with his fingers as he settled for a minute. ”However, it is not bad to be prepared. So I need you to sabotage the stage in order to give me an advantage”

There it was… Kenzo knew from the moment he saw Jelies that he was the type to resort to this type of petty tricks. However, it was not his job to question them. Everyone had their ways of surviving in life in the end. As he went around the city buying things to rig the stage for the next day, only a thought crossed through his mind. ”What’s up with the bastards of this town? Is everyone here a fake?” First Dex, later Jelies. Orchidia wasn’t looking so hot for the moment. He’d be sure to complain to Noel about his fellow Orchidians when he came back.

Either way, his job was completed masterfully. After sneaking at night to the place, he made sure to give Jelies the biggest advantage he could without being too obvious. After telling him the next day what he had done, the head guard was able to easily win the duel. One more day, one more successful job completed.
