Ko Lesalt

The trek through the mountains was particularly burdensome, considering Ko was being forced to navigate through complete wilderness on foot.  For reasons unbeknownst to him, Achak and Cameron had decided to go on ahead without him, telling Ko to meet them on the outskirts of the Werewolf tribe’s camp.  Obviously Ko couldn’t ride in on Nantosuelta, as that would give away his location, but supposedly the location of the werewolf camp was situated in a densely wooded area, making finding it from overhead practically impossible.

As a result, Ko was slogging through said woods on foot, much to Nantosuelta’s chagrin.  She had staunchly insisted that if they couldn’t find the camp from the sky she should just burn the forest down until the wolves showed themselves.  At the time Ko had disagreed, but now he was starting to regret not letting her do as she wished.

Thankfully, the time Ko had been spending in the mountains had paid off, and he eventually found the location Achak and Cameron had talked about without too much difficulty.  From the vantage point, Ko could see numerous werewolves congregated, moving about at the behest of one particularly large individual.  Achak confirmed that that werewolf was Amarok, and thus Ko’s target.  If Ko was going to prevent the pack from attacking the town, he needed to enter the pack’s camp completely unafraid, and challenge Amarok as the one who defeated the rogue werewolf the pack had exiled.  Ko couldn’t take no for an answer, and had to present himself as completely serious.

Ko was already not certain this plan was the smartest.  Why on Earth was he even agreeing to this ridiculous plan to begin with?  If Amarok beat Achak in single combat, he deserved to be leading, even if it was through dirty tactics.  Not to mention, this village had been completely useless in terms of defending itself against even a single Werewolf.  Those were the thoughts rolling through Ko’s mind as he left their concealed perch and walked towards the camp.

Ko could smell the wolves before he saw them.  Like a mixture of human body odor and wet dog.  The camp had two guards at the perimeter, but Ko didn’t try to circumnavigate them.  He walked straight towards the camp, back straight and head held high.  Part of him imagined that his posture was the only reason the werewolves revealed themselves rather than just attack him outright.  In their guttural voices they demanded that he leave, as he was trespassing on their territory.  Ko shot right back, saying that he’d killed their exile in single combat, and he wanted to talk to Amarok.

If they hadn’t been nearly 3 meter tall murder machines, Ko might have thought the confused looks on their faces was cute.  As it was, Nantosuelta was cuter.  Regardless, they eventually overcame their surprise and reluctantly acquiesced, turning to lead Ko into the camp.  They passed many Werewolves on the way, who stopped whatever they were doing to look curiously at the human that had so brazenly entered their camp.  Ko ignored them as best he could, but he couldn’t ignore that they were starting to follow after him in a huge group.

Eventually the guard wolves brought Ko before Amarok, who up close looked every bit like Ko had expected of a brutal and animalistic leader like Achak had described him.  There wasn’t a shred of nobility in Amarok.  He looked like he was about to pounce on whoever got the closest to him, and at the moment that was Ko.  Before anyone could say anything, Ko spoke up loudly, proclaiming himself the killer of the exiled wolf, come to challenge Amarok for the title of Alpha.

Naturally, all the wolves present immediately let out howls of laughter.  Literal, actual howls, some of them even doubling over and clutching their stomachs.  Ko didn’t laugh.  He just stared at Amarok evenly, until the Werewolf leader finally looked back, seeing the narrow, predatory eyes that marked Ko as a Dragon Slayer.  Amarok stopped laughing after that.

Amarok loudly, and angrily, accepted Ko’s challenge, and despite their mockery mere moments ago the other werewolves immediately fell into place. They moved into a wide circle, surrounding Amarok and Ko, utterly silent. It was somewhat surprising, considering how loudly they’d all been a mere moment ago. Amarok stood in the same place, staring Ko down, clearly trying to get a handle on how he would do his best to kill his opponent. Ko, on the other hand, idly adjusted his gauntlet as he sized his opponent up.

It was clear Amarok had the advantage in sheer strength and speed; he was like a wild animal, after all. In a straight forward exchange Ko would likely lose every time. That meant he had to be smart. He had to draw things out as long as he could, and wear his opponent down. That much Ko was confident he could do. In the meantime, that meant taking as little damage as possible from the mad Werewolf’s attacks.

Suddenly, the time for thinking things over was done. In a flurry of motion Amarok went from still to on the attack. Ko barely had time to react, stepping to the side just in time to avoid the werewolf’s jagged claws raking across his face. Luckily, Ko had also had the foresight to wear his armor for once, giving him some added protection and helping him keep a level head. Being the slower of the two, Ko was immediately on the defensive, but he was careful not to let Amarok control the pace. For each of the werewolf’s wild attacks, Ko only ever barely dodged, stepping just far enough to avoid but never over extending himself. When he could, Ko lashed out, striking Amarok in the vulnerable parts of his face: his nose, his ears, his eyes, purposely working to impair his opponent’s ability to sense where he was.

The fight was getting long. Ko was finally starting to breath heavily, his cheek bleeding from the first real blow that Amarok had managed to land on him. It was a testament to his strategy that Amarok was in much worse condition. The massive werewolf was breathing in deep, ragged breaths, blood leaking from his nose and one eye completely swollen shut. Ko couldn’t tell from looking at him, but his ears were probably ringing fiercely as well. So far Ko hadn’t attacked anything except the werewolf’s face, wearing down his weak points in preparation for something more fatal. So far, it had worked well. If Ko could keep it up just a while longer, he could start risking more dangerous attacks without the chance of getting torn in half.

At that moment, Ko was made to remember that although Amarok had defeated Achak in single combat, he hadn’t done so using fair tactics. The two had begun to circle each other for a moment, both trying to catch their breath, but just as Ko was about to surge back onto the offensive he felt something catch on the back of his armor, halting his forward motion for a moment and throwing off his balance. He hadn’t realized how close he’d gotten to the crowd, and for just a moment after feeling that interference, Ko glanced over his shoulder to see a smaller, almost feeble looking Werewolf pulling its hand back, and grinning cruelly.

As if he’d been waiting for that moment, Amarok was punching on Ko like his life depended on it. The crowd was forced to back up as Ko was sent flying, the superior weight of Amarok pinning him to the ground. The Alpha sneered down at Ko, believing victory was his, his fangs glinting in the moonlight. Amarok raised his claws in preparation to rend Ko apart, only for his entire body to seize. Ko just sneered right back, his own sharpened teeth gleaming as his gauntleted hand clenched around Amarok’s most delicate organs, crushing them in one merciless movement.

Amarok let out a strangled, pained howl louder than anything Ko had ever heard, but he didn’t pause to enjoy it. Taking the initiative, Ko rolled, slamming Amarok down onto the ground and immediately driving his armored elbow into Amarok’s throat. The werewolf sputtered, bloodied foam appearing at the corners of his mouth. Then Ko struck his throat again, and again, until the third time something popped, and Amarok stopped struggling.

Ko stood up, looking down at the fallen form of Amarok. He’d almost died. He’d almost died. This fucking wolf had almost killed him. The assembled werewolves were clearly milling about, unsure of what to do after such an unprecedented occasion. Then, a new wave of muttering washed over the crowd, and Ko looked up to see Achak had approached, still looking stoic and noble as ever, clearly conflicted about Ko having won. Perhaps it was not that Ko had won, but the way he’d won that made Achak conflicted. A wave of rage washed over Ko, like a tidal wave of emotion.

Pointing at Achak, Ko spoke clearly and with authority. “You aren’t fit to rule this pack if you need someone else to do your fighting for you.” Achak’s eyes widened, realizing what was about to happen. Ko gave the command, and the other wolves fell upon Achak like ravenous beasts. If nothing else, Ko had to admire their loyalty to their traditions. They tore Achak to pieces in moments, caring not at all for the fact he was their former Alpha.

As Achak’s remains lay steaming, Ko heard the sound of the underbrush rustling, and realized that Cameron had taken off in fear. The coward was just as bad as Achak. Another command, the entire pack ran off after Cameron, the man’s village sentenced to death. Once the last of the wolves were gone, Ko found a spot to sit down, and flopped to the ground. He hadn’t fought that hard in a long time, nor come so close to death. It had been absolutely exhilarating. Then that fucking Achak had gone and ruined it by trying to judge him. Ko was above that kind of judgement; he lived his life the way he chose. He didn’t have any time for the opinions of the weak. Eventually the wolves returned, laden with spoils from the village. Or at least, some wolves returned. They informed him that they wouldn’t follow him, after he’d killed the two brothers that had kept them alive so long. Ko dismissed them. He didn’t care if they lived or died after today. At least he’d gotten something for all his troubles.
