Jolyne Atreides

Today must have been one of the days that ended in y, as Jolyne Atreides was tasked once again to go to a shop owners behest and rough up some thugs that sought some form of tax from them. It was a dull and mundane repetition by this point and beginning to grate on the soul of the shambling skeleton that was the woman. It simply was not what she felt her calling to be, and the build up of similar quests was rapidly diminishing her zeal for working for the guild she was currently in. It simply conflicted too much with her psyche and she feared the day she would be asked to clear cut some trees to make way for some shop expansion as that would be beyond a breaking point for her. Perhaps it would be best to leave sooner rather than later when it became a big issue of her morals versus her work, a sad line of thinking but one that occupied her skull as she went about getting dressed before she would leave her apartment to go to the house. While the Lich did not require sleep, it was always nice to have a place to store one's things and as such she had rented a room for the duration of her stay in the city. Though from the way things were going she may end up finding an excuse to venture elsewhere sooner rather than later. It was an odd thought but one that made her happy, which was a troubling sign for the current stability of the path upon which she walked. It was dangerous to switch up one's job, much more so when one had magic at their disposal. Still if it was the way the dice ended up rolling, it did not seem too horrible.

Bedazzled in her regular regalia, the Lich felt resplendent enough to make up for the unsavory task of hoarding wealth and assisting those who did so. To feel as though one looked good, and felt fancy would make up for quite a few things that Jolyne disliked doing, having found out long ago that it had helped. Worth it, was the hour she spent dressing before she set out from her abode into the city proper in order to find the shop she was tasked with protecting on this day. While it was not the worst quest that she had, this time it would not be as interesting without a guest star nor without some goofy kid to break up the pace. Instead it was a vanilla make sure the goons don't get a smash and grab, and it did bore the Lich who wondered just what she would come up against this time. The last time it was just five lightly armed men, the two mages who had been sent out were overkill on that one and Jolyne had a hunch that this mission would follow suit. Though she had no evidence behind her, she was not overjoyed by the sight of the building that marked her mission's locale. It was unfortunately mundane on the outside as well, not following suit from the other shops in the area and instead going for a simple storefront that reflected it's simple nature as a mundane book store. Without spells or anything of the like being sold here, the Lich was left wondering how much of a profit this place turned to be catching the eye of those who offered protection money. Still it was not her job to question things, but instead to shut up and simply do the task at hand.

Entering the building she was greeted by the smell of dust and a rotund man who did not even bother to get up from the cushioned seat he had arranged behind a desk in the open floor plan. The bookstore was even more boring on the inside and Jolyne was not looking forward to the aspect of watching over such a place or helping a person who allowed such dust and general disregard for cleaning in their place of business. At least the other owners she had facilitated the mercantilism of held some form of standards to their wares and location. Still the Lich reminded herself that she was her to complete her task and get on with her business and not stammer around while judging the man who had submitted the quest to the guild, as much as she may want to. There was work to be done and so she went to introduce herself to the man before asking about the details of the group that would come there for the protection money. Once more she was questioning the ability of such an establishment at turning a profit but Jolyne Atreides had to keep herself to matters at hand. The man told her it was a low tier mage and his lackey who came for the money every month on this day, apparently he used some form of blade magic and as such the skeleton was not entirely worried about the exchange that would come up. If it was some D rank drop out of a mage their magic probably would not even sink into her bones, let alone to speak of how easy a blade fit around or even between most of them. While she would not let her guard down, the Lich began to prepare for what the other mage may do.

The lackey may be a factor in the fight but without knowing what to expect the Plant Mage could not factor the person in to her ideas of what to expect from the fight. While it was tempting to use her own magic she opted for the idea of sticking close to behind the door so that she could close into melee distance quickly. Mages rarely worked on their footwork and even the ones who were excellent at the craft preferred to use their advantage of range and could get flustered by a surprise that close. Banking on this fact along with other variables the skeleton went towards the front wall of the store and struck a pose to pass as a macabre mannikin. It did not take overtly long before a man dressed like some Halloween store aficionado entered the building along with a very short man who chittered under his breath. As the shop keep yelled out about it being them, Jolyne Atreides leapt forward and struck the short man on the back of the head knocking him to the ground. Spinning the Lich found the other mage retreating already, but before she could pursue he threw his hand backwards and a hailstorm of daggers shot backwards at her. Dodging to her left, the Lich whistled as she scrambled around the bookcase eyeing a dagger that had bounced off the wall and back towards her feet. Picking it up with a deft movement from her skeletal foot to her hand she twirled around the side of the shelf and launched it at the man who spun to direct the stream of blades back at her again. Hers struck first however and the man's magic fizzled out causing blood to leak from his side as he fell to the floor in a panic.

Informing the man of his rights Jolyne healed and then debuffed the man with her magic, binding him and allowing her to turn both of the offenders to the shop keep for him to turn into the police. While it was not the worst mission she would no doubt undertake, she certainly had not enjoyed helping this man out and was of a mind to reconsider a few things when she returned to her domicile. The Plant Mage then had to deal with the man trying to haggle the price of her reward, it was the shit cherry on top of the shit cake that was her experience and what sealed it as becoming the worst quest she had undertaken thus far. A truly miserable experience throughout she was now endeavoring to be far more selective in her quest choices as well as looking at other options for where to take her future as a mage. Perhaps a different guild was in order if Fairy Tail continued to be a lapdog to merchants in the capital, it was not something that the Lich desired to be associated with and she was not excited as the prospect of continuing in such a line of work. After a few hours she got her proper allotted dues and left the shop behind, hopefully forever though she could ultimately never be certain. Few things in life could ever be predicted to never occur again, and while this was not one of them Jolyne Atreides wished it was. Instead it seemed as though she would have to stifle the urge to go back and yell at the man and retire for the night. It was a tiring process protecting the ruling class' cashflow and Jolyne was extremely tired from doing it for the whole day.
