He looked back to his comrades but there were none. Not like the days in the past, he ran with the elven unit. This mission he took alone. His head peeked in first. A dim light filled the room from candles dripping onto a wooden deck. Dank and wet cloth sipped its smell into the walls. A bird chirped on the window sill of the stone fortification. It was the only sound in the small room, save for a groan in the back. Jin stepped in, careful not to make a sound. His boots rolled heel to toe, crouched with as little weight as he could.

The room had only one cell. Food stores were to the left and an unguarded table was to the right. Bars ran from the ceiling to the floor. A man sat with crossed arms on a cot. Shackles ran down his wrists to an iron hook in the middle of the cell. They hung limp and heavy on his foot. Jin stepped forward and eyed the window. The bird flew off and a few guards patrolled the courtyard beneath him. A reflection of plate armor shimmered on the window. Jin took a deep breath, not wanting to get tangled up in that mess again.

Jin’s spear was held behind him. The reflection of the plate armor shimmered and passed by. Jin ducked and pressed himself against the cold stone. He let out a small breath and inched closer to the cell. The prisoner let his hair dangle around his face like hanging moss and sat unmovingly.

“I’m here to get you out,” Jin said and pulled the lock up on the cell. He plunged a lockpick within and began to wiggle about until the mechanism popped open.

“Why,” the man replied, finally looking up from his position. The door cell swung open and the two made eye contact. A burning passion exuded from the man’s stare. One ready to stand trial for what the Boscosi would call a crime. Jin smiled and told the man that in the end, he realized that he supports Stella more than Bosco. The prisoner grinned and lifted his shackled hands.

Jin picked the lock and the shackles fell. Jin caught them before they could bounce on the stone floor and alert the guards. He eased the shackles down and helped the man to his feet. Pushing the man gently behind him, they made their way toward the door and into the hall.

A singular rope hung from a beam over an open window. “I plan to get you out before you can stand trial,” Jin said and made his way to the window with the prisoner behind him. A man of the Stellan Resistance. One of the reasons he had to do this mission alone. “You alright,” he asked the man. A groan followed with a head wobble back and forth indicating he was as good as he needed to be.

“I’ll make it,” the weary yet resolute voice spoke.

“We drop down the rope and make a run to the wilds,” Jin replied and propped the window open with a log, just to make sure. The prisoner gazed out at the sky of freedom that awaited. Jin took the rope and lowered himself one hand at a time. The prisoner stepped out above him and followed suit. Jin kept an eye on the ground in case anyone wandered by.

A guard turned the corner and Jin grimaced. His hand reached for his spear and waited. The guard tugged the rope and started to look up. Jin dropped down and smashed the blunt end of the spear into the man’s helmet, knocking him out.
With a quick gesture, Jin waved the Prisoner down and the two dashed into the wild's free men once more.
