Five years later, his parents had also welcomed a set of twins named Aiko and Anzu. He, unlike the rest of his family who had names starting with the letter ‘A’, was named after his maternal grandfather whom his mother deeply respected. Despite the harsh conditions and the constant whispers of civil war, the quintet lived peacefully within a small village along the outskirts of Iceberg. Their father would take frequently take them out to explore the environment. He showed them the ins and outs of the landscape and always ensured they knew how to protect themselves. Privately, he instilled within Kazuma the drive to protect his sisters. Unfortunately, the growing conflicts between tribes eventually took their parents away from them and left the trio orphans. Kazuma, being the oldest, remembered his father’s teachings and strove to protect them. He did everything he could to ensure they had what they needed and did not care how he had to obtain it. Most of the time, he would steal from the village and would mercilessly attack anyone who dared to show contempt towards his remaining family. He was, in many aspects, their guardian angel; a stark contrast to the man he’d grow up to be. On the eve of his sisters’ tenth birthday, their village was attacked by raiders. Blood dyed the snowcapped grounds as if they were painted red. People were dragged out into the open and selected. Being selected meant that you would survive and be sold to slavers. Not being selected meant instant death. While Kazuma was selected, his sisters were not so fortunate. Kazuma protested the decision, valiantly fighting the slavers in an effort to save them. The numbers game was too much for him and he was eventually outmatched. His “insubordination” raised the ire of the leader of the raiders who sought to personally deal with the executions. The leader, a tall yet lanky individual with dirty blonde hair, used a form of Take-Over magic to take on the characteristics of a snake. Using his newly acquired tail, he methodically squeezed the life out of the twins in front of Kazuma’s very eyes before knocking the youth out. The image of seeing the life drain from his sisters’ eyes along with the initial trauma of losing his parents to senselessness warped his way of thinking. The feeling of loss and being helpless manifested into an insatiable desire to fight in his later years. He and any other survivors were eventually worn down and captured before being sold off. Kazuma didn’t care what happened to him at this point, though he found great pleasure in antagonizing those around him. It was a coping mechanism. He would occasionally make smart remarks to the other slaves and even the guards themselves, earning the scars that line his back. Through the hard labor that he was forced to do, and the fights he regularly found himself in, Kazuma’s body and fighting skills were honed. Throughout his time at the slave camp, Kazuma met a woman named Izumi. Izumi, who was also a slave, smiled when he attempted to insult her. She never took the bait and retaliated at his attempts of provocation. Despite her situation, she always tried to look at the positives. Her cheery disposition reminded him of the happier times he had with his family before life intervened. His demeanor would slowly begin to change around her and, despite their differing personalities, they grew to respect and care for one another. He would teach her how to better defend herself and she, being adept in magic, would teach him how to harness it. As the years passed, his proficiency in magic grew and surpassed her own. One day, the rest of the slaves began to revolt, Kazuma and Izumi took this as their opportunity to escape. Taking the quiet route in comparison to the noisy spectacle that lay before them, they managed to sneak around and find their way out. Although the two did encounter a few guards, they were quickly and quietly disposed of. After their escape, they both decided to leave the country of Iceberg behind them. It was at this point, Kazuma decided to renounce his name, cutting off all ties with his previous life. He took on the name Jin Takayama, the name of a prominent warrior in stories his mother shared with he and his siblings. With nowhere else to go, the two of them decided to become mercenaries for hire, taking up jobs for cash and other various things to make a living. Reference: Ikazuchi |
