The shy Joanne seemed to respond positively to the polite monk - Poropo held out his hand for her to take and she accepted the offer. Father Jared seemed pleased and explained the Grand Cathedral of Crocus would reward Poropo for his service - the priest assumed the monk would make the journey there with Joanne safe and sound, "I hope you make the trip back safely, Kind Monk Poropo - I may need your help in the future as well. And Joanne...study so you may come home again and enlighten your parents."
Joanne closed her eyes and turned away from Father Jared, holding back tears - she believed she was ready to leave her home and Father Jared behind, but she really wanted to give her parents more chances. However, if her parents had not changed their ways after dozens of attempts then only studying magic at the Grand Cathedral could make her life whole again. Joanne turned back to Father Jared and waved goodbye while following Poropo out of Magnolia.
As the young girl and old man traveled, Poropo attempted to start conversations with Joanne about her positive memories - Joanne was more than happy to share fun stories about the kindness Father Jared had shown her, including a story of how the clever priest pretended to exorcise demons for a solid hour in front of Joanne parents in order to convince them their child was no longer possessed.
Unfortunately, Joanne's positive memories were squished between less than positive interactions with her emotionally abusive parents - the mother and father constantly fought with one another which caused Joanne to feel isolated. The introduction of her Light Magic caused their rage to be directed to Joanne, as if she was at fault for everything wrong with their failing relationship. Poropo's heart sank so the monk changed the subject several times to refresh the mood on the long, three day journey to Crocus.
