Yes indeed, it was again that time.

Previously, on our last episode, we had a Rune Knight who trained to be the best. The way to initiate such a thing is pretty obvious; To warm up your body and your magic meridians in order to ensure that no harm would befall you while working to improve and grow stronger. So with that out of the way, what would be the best way in which to practice ones spells and magical abilities? Well, that would be a practical exam!

At this point, Jove had confirmed for himself that he had honed his strengths and mitigated his weaknesses. He had fought plenty of large beasts, monsters, and other types of ghouls and ghastly beings in order to fine tune his control over mana and his body. This was in order to ensure that no extra energy would be expended in a fight. After all, things could change at any given moment. More enemies could arrive, an opponent could be hiding a transformation, they could have tricks that one could never predict, and the list goes on. Once he had finished fine tuning, he needed someone to test it on, and coincidentally, the Rune Knights had given him an opportunity to do just that.

He had finally gotten his test on Erebus, a monumental threat with a reputation to back it up. He was a confirmed powerhouse, one of the strongest dark mages known about in Fiore, and a member of the infamous Eternal Nightmare. He was someone who should have been a massive risk to anyone involved, but luckily Jove was able to dispatch him quickly. So what was the next step?

Well, Jove had found a level of confidence in his current skillset. He felt like it would properly support him in the upcoming battles, but he had noticed some places where he was lacking. So for that, he had formulated a couple of new spells in order to ensure that he would be able to avoid some of the upcoming dangers which he had become privy to in his last fight. His senses would be his lifeline, and he couldn't bare to have them cut.

And so as Jove walked towards one of the most dangerous places in Oak, he channeled his mana. His magic was swirling about him in a tight whirlwind of power, and Jove would relax his control over his magic for just a moment before reigning it back in. It was a sort of strength via repetition, similar to a normal physical workout.

The pulsation of his magic came at even intervals, and though the amount never changed, its expression certainly did. In one moment it would be a whirling typhoon of power, sending debris away from him and terrifying smaller creatures into movement or silence. Nothing dare come near him, as he was essentially announcing to the world and anything which could sense him that he was the predominant predator in these parts. Considering he was still on the outskirts of the forest, there was not yet anything brave enough to challenge this man who was so confidently announcing his power to the world.

Yet when he reigned the magic in at equidistant time stamps, it was a painful silence. It was as if the lions roar had suddenly come to an end, leaving only nothingness to seep through the air. At this moment, if one who looked his way could see the flow of mana, they would see it dripping off his body in thick webs, coming up away from his general aura. The parts of his mana which broke away fizzled like embers before disappearing into the ether. He was not one who had an overwhelming amount of mana, and for that reason, he felt it important to refine his level of control like this.

Without even realizing it, the surroundings of the Rune Knight had changed. The trees grew closer together, their trunks becoming more thick and gnarled. Undergrowth and grass sprouted up far more often. There were plenty of areas of open terrain, but the closest thing to actual paths through this part of the forest were created by the beasts which prowled the area. This was an area of Fiore still untamed by human kind. There were those who could come and begin suppressing it, like the Knight who had just entered its jaws, but they were few and far between. It was due to the dangers of this untamed wilderness that Jove thought it would be the perfect place to train himself.

And so finally, Jove stopped repeatedly reigning in his mana. Instead, he let it explode outwards fully. It was a firm announcement that he was there, and a challenge to all the things within a few square kilometers that he would challenge them for their territory. At least, that was how the beasts interpreted such a clear display of authority. He was essentially challenging the domain of every apex predator which could sense his mana. The prey went silent, the forest danced in the wind with anticipation, and the warmup had ended. The real training was about to begin.

The energy exerted by the mage ripped away from his body, pulling the attention of every predator in the area. Jove was by no means releasing everything he had, as that would begin draining his actual mana reserves. Instead, what he was doing was channeling his magic as a spotlight. For creatures which possessed a sort of sixth sense about these things, it would be an indistinguishable amount of power flaring up in their territory. Such a thing could not be left to pass, and they would surely converge on this point in order to stop such a being from getting to ahead of themselves.

This also worked as a form of training for Jove. He had been practicing controlling his mana with extreme precision on this entire walk, and doing so without any hesitation. With literally zero delay, Jove would go from allowing his mana to explode outwards to bringing it back in. This repetition would be necessary for Jove to quickly be able to transition between different types of spells, but also to better focus the energy to specific extremities if required by his spells. This level of control would be necessary for the spells he would be trying out in these upcoming fights. As he thought this, he heard the distance snapping of branches.

This was especially important due to how quiet the surrounding area had been. Bugs, birds, and all other small critters had grown completely silent. The fact that there was noise now could very well imply that predators were now on their way towards him, and so just in case, Jove was now on guard.

It hit like a storm. The forest had grown quiet, filled only with the knight who was putting out his energy and baiting in the opponents who lurked abroad. He had no way of knowing whether or not his baiting would work until there was a response, but when the response came it was sudden and intense. He heard the breaking of branches, felt the rumbling of the earth, and soon the creatures of the forest were upon him. They were humanoid in nature, massive gorilla like creatures with glowing red eyes who sprinted at him from the ground. They ran like gorillas were expected to; using fists and feet in order to close the distance to him.

Jove transformed without hesitation, taking on the form of his fusion with Lucifer, and then they were upon him. He immediately began moving, matching their speed within moments, and the fight ensued. He did not bother with magic just yet, instead choosing to keep this part hand to hand. As important as mana, physical capabilities would allow for one to utilize more of their latent magical abilities. He was a firm believer in this, and always had been, and so for the time being that's what he'd do.

As Jove was fighting, he quickly came to the conclusion that these beasts before him could use magic. Perhaps it was rudimentary, but he saw that several of the great apes did not have glowing eyes. At least, not at first. They developed the flow shortly after magic circles happened around their eyes. Jove watched these creatures as he fought them, moving his body through the trees in order to make sure he could never be fully surrounded. His eyes scanned through the enemies, wondering if this magic was being utilized by each individual or if perhaps there was a single magic user among the beasts which allowed the rest to become enhanced.

Before long he found what he was looking for. A single gorilla in the back, a bright white stripe down its chest, which was wiggling its fingers like malicious little worms. It looked to be whispering, and as it whispered, more magic circles would appear. To be honest it was a mix of disturbing and creepy, and Jove would not stand for it. Brushing his hand to the side, he would activate one of the magics which he had ironically made for this exact situation. The sensory magic, not the finger wiggling gorilla.

As Jove brushed his hand to the side and activated the new spell in which he had made to counter sensory magics, it activated without a hitch. Usually he'd not have such a clear indicator that such a magic was in use. There would be context clues perhaps, but very rarely would they be as obvious as this. Bright, glowing red eyes and magic circles at the beasts temples, as well as the single creepy warlock monkey in the back moving its fingers like a cheap 90's anime pervert. The spell circle formed, and the gorilla in the back snapped his hands back in surprise, looking at Jove. The other gorillas all had their eyes return to normal, a shocking development. They were no longer moving in unison, and that made cleaning them up much easier. Jove would turn his face and open his mouth, firing out 2 meter large orbs of fire through the woods. This spell would not only destroy the trees, but also decimate the monkeys in which it hit. Not that they were monkeys, of course, but gorillas. An entirely different creature as a matter of fact, and Jove felt a slight twinge of guilt for making that mistake.

As the fight continued, Jove found himself shocked that so many more gorillas were coming. He had made a miscalculation when coming here. He had been under the assumption that the area of woods in which he was entering would have a large amount of biodiversity, and that there would be several apex predators in the area of varying species. As a matter of fact, he had counted on it. He thought that the variance of different magical beasts would force him to utilize his magic in different and unique ways, but instead, it seemed like this area was absolutely overwhelmed by these strange gorilla monstrosities. It wasn't as though he were complaining though; He was more than happy to have such an endless supply of mindless monsters with which he could fight and train himself and his new spells.

The weird white striped gorilla had gone missing, and though Jove was quickly able to relocate it after scanning the backline of the new wave of gorillas, he saw it performing another magical spell. It had one hand in the air, and as Jove moved to get a better look while fighting for his life, he was truly caught off guard by what he saw.

The gorilla had one hand up, clenched loosely in a fist and spinning ever so slightly as if it were twirling a shirt above its head. The other hand was pointed down and behind it, as if in disco form. Its one foot was tapping to an invisible rhythm, and its waist gyrated as if to an unheard beat. For a moment, Jove could have sworn he could imagine a full head braces container around the gorilla, as well as a blue top and white jeans, but it was all part of the magic. The braces were the magic circle, appearing halfway on its head. The blue shirt was the swirling of water around its torso. The white pants were the heavy mist that formed. And suddenly, it exploded outwards, obscuring vision throughout the entirety of the forest. It seemed this gorilla had not only delved into the realm of magic, but also lighthearted disco and dance. It was truly an enemy which would force Jove to evolve actively if he wished to win. He looked around, and just barely put his fists up in time. He covered his face, defending from a gorilla punch, and being thrown backwards. It seemed as though it was once again time to evolve.

Skidding to a stop and swiping his hand before his face, he activated another of his newest spells. This one changed his vision, allowing for thermal sight. It could help in a situation like this perfectly, and so he thought himself lucky to have ran into an opponent like this. With his thermal vision he was able to better see how the gorillas moved about and prepared to attack him, and what he saw confirmed his suspicion that the fog effected them too. It wasn't a targeted spell which effected only his vision, but instead, something that brought forth a truly dense fog. The beasts simply had much higher senses naturally, and so they could still fight relatively well.

Yet now that he had thermal vision, they would prove no match. To compound on this, Jove let out back to back area of effect debuff spells, targeting the gorillas strength and their endurance. This would negate much of the power behind their punches, and allow for much easier responses to their attacks. After all, if their endurance was way down, that mean that they would be injured much easier. This allowed for him to easily take them out of commission and begin moving towards the shaman gorilla.

As Jove worked his way through, he found the gorilla which had casted the spell. This was actually easy to do, as it had only just stopped doing its disco dance. To clarify, it had not continued the dance because this spell was sustained. In fact, there was no decrease in fogginess when the gorilla stopped its disco. Rather, it seemed as if it had merely gotten lost in the music within its head, falling prey to the dancing craze of the 80s. It was an understandable pitfall, truly, but one that would deeply cost the gorilla as he closed in.

Yet Jove had become too distracted. He had expected gorillas to continue to attack him as they had done, but his lack of normal vision due to the fog, and the way that thermal vision worked, had led to him lowering his guard and being taken easily in a trap. A liquid, one which seemed to have mildly acidic properties, splashed onto his face through the fog! His eyes clamped shut, and the liquid quickly evaporated from his face, but when he opened his eyes again his vision was completely gone. It was the strangest thing! It no longer hurt, but clearly would last at least temporarily. Whatever would Jove do?

Jove decided he would need an all new spell! It was the only way. After all, he needed to be able to see. The thermal vision was there, but any sort of supplementary vision was gone. This would make clearing the distance between himself and the disco gorilla incredible dangerous. He would be unable to move full speed, as there would be massive risk of him being attacked in such a strange way once more, or even of him running full speed into trees. Either one would prove to be fatal while surrounded by enemies, and so what he did instead was activate yet another spell.

He cast his third spell, Visual Link, upon himself. This allowed his eyes to once again capture sensory information, and though he could not "See" in this visual sense, all the visual data was transmitted directly to his brain. It meant that he had essentially a constant, vocal 6th sense telling him exactly how to react to the things his eyes were seeing. It wasn't all that different from sight in effect and process, simply in conception and how one could physically perceive it. With that done, Jove once again began to speed through the forest, through the fog, and towards the disco killer gorilla!

Jove closed in on the gorilla, who was now severely weakened. He had used much of his mana on the sensory spells given to his allies, as well as the fog he had produced. He had tired himself out through the ancient art of dance, and he was also under the strength and endurance debuff set out by Jove. He had the entire world against him, and as Jove closed in, the gorilla closed its eyes. A million images flashed through his gorilla mind. His gorilla wife, his rebellious gorilla child, his job as gorilla shaman. He would never go home again it seemed. He thought 'You did well, Dankey Kang' to himself, and then it was all over. Jove slammed his fist into the gorillas chest, activating a spell which caused an explosion on impact. The combined damage of physical and magical exertion lifted the gorilla from his hand feet and sent him flying backwards. His eyes rolled back, his mana drifted away, and he was dead before he fell onto the forest floor. Immediately the fog began to clear, and Jove noticed his normal vision also begin to return. Somehow, someway, it seemed that gorilla had also been at fault for that.

With that shaman gorilla out of the way, the rest were beyond demoralized. They had become exhausted, their numbers vastly dwindled, and one by one they fell to their knees. They all began to bow to Jove, or to turn and run away completely. They had been decimated by this new predator, and they no longer possessed the means to resist him. They slowly accepted their fate to be wiped out, or at least that's how the ones who stayed felt. Jove stared at them, and could easily tell that they had all lost their will to fight.

All but one.

A younger gorilla, this one with a much smaller white streak down its chest, stepped forward. It stared at Jove, and then at its dead father. Jove stared back, his face blank. The two measured each other, and then it was over. The gorilla lowered its head and slowly walked forward and past Jove. He allowed it to happen, all three of his spells still active. If it tried any funny visual magics like its father had done, Jove would be fully prepared. This also allowed him to continue to train them, despite the fight being over. Yet instead, the gorilla walked right past him!

The gorilla lifted its father up onto its back, and it stood up tall. Turning to face the human who had bested their gorilla army, and killed his gorilla father, the younger gorilla looked at Jove and nodded. Jove had become an impossible enemy, maybe even a rival, for him to overcome. This younger striped gorilla would go back to their home and train every day, on the off chance that this demonic human would once again return. For now, however, it would live on through the mercy of that very same human; the one who stood before the gorillas, nodding and allowing them to retreat.

With that, Jove dispelled his visual magics, and began to make his way away from this area. He would find another spot, with other creatures, in which to finish his training. As he moved he continued to manipulate his mana through himself and around himself. He did so while transformed now, which changed the essence of his mana ever so slightly and also changed how he had to go about this manipulation. It served as the perfect way to train while on the move. Honestly, he had never been the type to work this hard while off the clock. What was wrong with him?
