There was always work to find in Hosenka, especially in its gutters and back alleys. This would be the second job Nadine would be doing for Madam Suzumi, and the demi-human wasn’t exactly against the type of work that had been requested of her so far. Previously she had bullied a fool who owed her money, and now she would be escorting a new worker to Madam Suzumi’s brothel. The circumstances of this new employee’s hiring wasn’t something Nadine bothered asking about. This client had been prompt and discreet with paying for the last job, so the dark mage would return the professionalism shown to her.

Waiting for her VIP alongside a quiet street Nadine leaned her shoulder against a streetlight. The night was blanketing the Crimson Quarter in a slight chill as the moon rose higher into the sky. It wasn’t long before a car turned onto the street before slowly creeping down the road. Nadine squinted and glared through the vehicle’s headlights, eyeing the driver dangerously. Almost as if on cue, the car’s lights dimmed, allowing Nadine’s uncanny vision to peer into the dark cabin unimpeded.

She could see a woman in the backseat talking to the driver, and they were both looking in her direction. With a sigh Nadine stood up straight and faced the car. She held out a hand and wagged a finger at the vehicle, as if beckoning a dog. She didn’t know what game was going on here, but she didn’t have the patience for that, either.

Once the car slowed down to a stop in front of her Nadine folded her arms across her chest, waiting for the woman to get out. However, instead of the door opening, the window rolled down as the passenger called out to her.

“Are you the one?” asked the red haired woman in a shift tone, eyeing the demi-human suspiciously.

“If you’re headed to Madam Suzumi’s place, then yes.” Nadine stepped forward and placed a gauntlet covered hand on the roof of the car as she leaned down a little to stare at the other woman with a raised brow. “If not, then move along before I move you myself.”

The friendly introduction earned a scoff from the passenger, who looked as if she might tell the driver to keep going. After a few seconds of exchanging glares the woman relented, and unlocked the door before stepping out of the car with a small suitcase in hand.

“Look, I’m sorry if I’ve been rude, but I think someone’s been stalking me for a while. Since before I left Hargeon. So I’m a little on edge. I’m Maya, thank you for meeting me.” The woman gave an appreciative nod.

“Stalking? This is the first I’ve heard of this, but unless you’ve really pissed someone off, I wouldn’t worry too much about it. You can discuss the matter with Madam Suzumi later. Maybe she’ll hire me again to take care of this problem for both of you, if it’s found to be credible.” Nadine jerked her thumb over her shoulder, indicating the direction of their destination. “It’s not far from here; let’s go.”

The walk to the brothel had been largely uneventful. Most of the way the two women simply talked a little about the Crimson Quarter, and Nadine was keen on not asking any questions that she didn’t need to know. Once they were inside the house of pleasure Madam Suzumi was quick to greet them in person. She was happy to see that her new employee had arrived safely and in a timely manner, but before the two could walk away, Nadine spoke up.

“Madam Suzumi? A quick word before you take Maya away. She mentioned that she might have a stalker problem. We didn’t have any issue getting here tonight, but if anything does come up you know how to reach me.”

“Ms. Archambault, thank you for the warning. Maya and I will have a discussion about it once she’s settled in. I trust my own security to keep the premises safe, but if I need your forceful expertise again, rest assured I won’t hesitate to contact you.” Madam Suzumi smiled before gesturing to a hallway leading to her office. “You’ll find your payment on my desk.”

“A pleasure doing business with you again, Madam Suzumi.” Nadine would give the woman a respectful nod before heading to her office to collect her payment.
