He explained that he didn’t want to stand out but lucretia pointed out that it was more suspicious that he was doing this. He’d just sigh at that but thank her for coming anyways. The woman found that ever since he had a large impact on baska that there was a large amount of mistrust from the cold colliers gang. Given that they had some resentment against the city for a mining accident years ago. Many men died and they hadn’t been given the large amount of jewels that they had been promised. Something that Lucretia scowled at.
With the sudden appearance of the new plague the doctor explained that he wanted her to find out if his suspicions were true; if they were actually capable of doing this. If they were they would have a lot of work cut out for them; Lucretia agreed to this, figuring that if she took care of it that a lot of people would be saved from a very large problem.
He further explained that he found that the source of the plague originated from the local water source. From which all of Baska’s drinking water flowed; he wanted her to go to that water source hidden deep inside of a cave and find out if the local gang was doing anything. It was shady work and the sort that could have severe backlash if they were discovered.
The woman nodded and agreed to head out immediately. Leaving him in that alley likely questioning his choices; it’d take her some time of wandering the countryside as she didn’t want to make it seem like she was looking for it. But eventually she’d arrive at the cave; looking around for a moment before entering it. There was a lot of stalagtites and a stalagmites; plenty of locations to hide and there was even a small pool of water that was separated from the main source of water; she’d note that there were some fish that were making rest there for a time. She’d have to remind herself that she was here for a more important venue than getting fed and would choose to hide behind one of the many large stalagmites.
She’d wait for some time; figuring that the best way to avoid being detected was simply to just wait there and not move. Her armor was black so thankfully it’d blend in but she’d have to tuck her hair into her armor and cover her head with a hood in the meantime. Given that it was stark white and would stick out if they so much as looked in her direction.
The hours ticked on by and lucretia sat there; unmoving in a rather convenient position so she wouldn’t get sore from sitting in the same spot. But she was starting to wonder just what gerard was on about. If they had to regularly come here to poison the water they should have been here by now right? She’d adjust slightly before freezing; she heard someone talking and another grumbling about footprints.
”I tell yah what if it’s not from us last time?”
”No one comes up here anymore it’s fine man… Just you got the stuff dontcha?”
”yeah yeah. Two potions worth of it. Overkill if you ask me but it’s whatever.”
Lucretia leaned to see two men entering the cave right around where she did. She’d note their dress and would take that down for later. Figuring that gerard would know based off of their outfits. She’d continue to watch them as one of them would open a potion; dumping out the contents into the river while the other watched for intruders. Neither of them spotted her in this initial phase.
The next gang member would take the other’s place and they’d do the same thing; emptying it out before making sure that they weren’t being watched. The both of them seemed content to leave but lucretia wasn’t about to have any chance of them finding that she was there. It’d do them both poorly given that Gerard was a known accomplice of hers at this point. But if they had figured it out they would have been put down cold and in the dirt… She figured that much at least.
Waiting for about another hour before she could tell they were gone; she’d make sure to take in the scents of the both of them. That way that if she needed to she could find them later. Her patience was rewarded as she noted that some of the horsetracks here were very fresh and would make her way back to the town.
She’d find gerard back in the alleyway, his hands clasped in front of him and that he was sitting on a crate. She’d explain what happened; who they were and how they were dressed. Even going so far as to explain the smell she was able to gleam from their tracks. They seemed to be very thorough about it all and well… Gerard wasn’t happy with the information that he was given but he’d thank her for her time before giving her the reward. She looked a bit pained to see him that way and she’d reach out a re-assuring hand to grip his shoulder.
”We’ll get to the bottom of this Gerard. It’ll be okay.”
He’d give her a small smile and nod his head before asking her not to tell anyone; she’d motion that she wouldn’t dream of it before heading out. This was going to be one hell of a problem long term wouldn’t it?
