With the guards distracted by the destruction of the outer wall. Kaz slips away into the deeper parts of the church. He shuffled by the guards and pressed himself through small rooms to evade detection. The moon was only half full and the sconces provided minimal light. He barely needed to turn invisible now. His movements had been silent enough. Another room appeared next to him. He pressed the door to see it was locked. A chain hung down in front of it, barring entry The mage slashed it with a blade of wind revealing the long spiraled steps on the other side.

Guards began to return to the halls and rush about, searching for the source of the attack. He pulled the chain through and let it gently drop to the ground as he shut the door behind himself. The hall was dark but he could feel the vibrations of everything that happened around him. It wasn’t anything he wasn’t used to.

The wind mage followed the winding path into the deeper parts of the dungeon. Chanting echoed softly from the bottom floor. Kaz slowed down and eased himself closer. He peeked around the corner of the wall to see a small group of robed people. Five total and all kneeling before a statute of a seraphim. It made him flash a memory of the one that he had fought. He hoped it was not going to be as dire as that moment was.

The mage stepped out into the open. And still, the chanting did not cease. They were completely focused on prayer and immersed in their faith. He moved silently and saw the library of texts behind a glass bookcase. Titles that ranged from Illumin to psychology. And then other manuals of history and reports. Before he took another step the chanting all stopped at once.

White robes shifted as the people turned to face the wind mage. Fear raced across most faces except the one that stood in the front, nearest the statue. “Kazimir?? Thank illumin a Wizard Saint has come to protect us. Someone has attacked our church!”

Kaz looked down, it was almost shameful that he found himself in this situation. “I know. I am here to find out what you know about illumin…and Seraphim that may still be on Earthland.”

The leader grimaced, “But what about the attack? Are you not going to…” the leader's eyes widened seeing the lack of reflection from Kaz in the mirror on the far wall.

“It can’t be,” the priest began.

“Just tell me what I want to know. This doesn’t need to get messy,” Kaz pleaded. He was tired of the endless fighting.

“We can’t do that. It is information only for the church.”

“Only for the church. I see. So am I right in assuming? That the church is manipulating the people.” Kaz opened the bookcase and slid out a book about psychology.

The cultists lurched forward, “You’re the dark figure that has been attacking. The vampire. You don’t know what you’re doing. We need that. The people need to be controlled. There would be chaos.”

“Perhaps. But there would be truth,” Kaz answered back and tossed the book on the ground.

The cultists leaped up and drew blades from beneath their tunics. They ran forward. Mere humans, with frail bodies. They were ready to fight for what they believed in. Kaz’s mind ached. His eyes flashed a different color. It burned and lasted for only an instant. He could almost feel the blood that coursed through their veins. Hearts racing with anger.

“So be it,”

Kaz rose his arms and blades of wind filled the room. The cultists did not waiver. They were trained for this moment. Vigilant and ready as any knight would be. But it was fruitless. They ran but only stepped a few times more before the blades of wind tore through their ranks. Kaz moved his arms like conducting a symphony. Blood spilled onto the holy rock beneath them. Splatter crossed onto the statue. The leader fell backward and knocked the stone figure from its place.

The room fell silent. All the cultists lay on the floor in front of him. He felt little remorse for them. Fanatics served a system that was built on murder and torture, and deception. The wind mage took his time and flipped through the reports and texts within the room.

It revealed the investigation into Seraphim that were still on earthland. Namely reports about a Gabriel. One bishop was leading the movement. He had a powerful following from the affiliated churches listed in the document. It also showed that most of the work was kept secret. Complaints had been filed by smaller factions of the church, treating him like a fringe element. But no major moves were ever done to change the situation.

Kaz leaned against the wall, reading about experiments done on dark races. It linked all the way back to some others that he had known. The church had been doing this for a long time. He sat down as it talked about Nephilim and Daemons. Keeping track of them along with other dark races. Efforts to eradicate or weaponize them for the church. All things pointed to one bishop using faith to control the masses. He shut the book and tucked some of them away with mist. The wind mage blew a hole in the wall and preceded to make his way out.

A strong force burst through the wall next to the mage. A dark hand grasped his arm. A light glow came from the hole. It fit the description of a monster from the church's book. One created to hunt dark races down. It slammed Kaz into the wall and drug him through. The beast struck with a knee that sent Kaz sailing backward. He could hear the sound of his ribs cracking.

The figure stepped all the way through and snarled. It teleported through the shadows and stabbed Kaz in the back, sending him back the other way with a limp arm. The wind mage caught himself against a wall and shot at the enemy. The beast teleported back and forth. Kaz evaded with his sensory ability. Just barely dodging some strikes. He blasted wind back and forth. A gust tore the arm off the beast. But it didn’t slow down. It marched forward still throwing blows at each other as they moved down the hall.

Deep breaths left Kaz’s mouth. He had not felt this kind of pain in a long time. The beast took damage but didn’t react at all to pain. It moved closer and Kaz could see the parts of the races. Claws like a werewolf, the fangs of a vampire. The beast leaped through the shadows. Something made from them, to hunt them. How poetic. Kaz dashed backward and erected a barrier of water. The claws burst through the barrier leaving a waterfall on the ground.

Kaz dashed into a well-lit room and created a dome of darkness. It was the only place for the beast to teleport to. As soon as it did so, Kaz brought down windstorms from all angles. Whimpers came from the darkness as the beast was the only thing left. Its body slowly wisped away into the ether of existence.

The wind mage sighed and stumbled against a wall to get himself out. Once near daylight, he flew high and away from the crimes left behind.
