Kali found herself in the dark room of this blacksmith’s shop once again. She watched him fumbling around for a long time until she had enough of it and waved the letter he sent her in his face. “You have something you want me to do again. So stop stalling and just spill it,” She snapped, effectively halting the man in his steps. It’s not like she wanted to be here. It was barely a day ago when she was so angry at this man that she wanted to snap him in half. But he was a very conspicuous person in the town and his disappearance will not go unchecked. Besides, as infuriating as he was, Godfrey was a very good source of income for the broke mage. She needed all the money she could get and if Godfrey was able to supply it, she was willing to let him live a while longer.

It took Godfrey another long painful moment in Kali’s life to get the whole thing out of his mouth. But his intentions instantly alerted Kali of the scroll she brought to him just last night. He wanted to smuggle in some illegal ores to make something and Kali could bet her whole life on what he was making had something to do with the magic scroll. The man gave no other info away, however. Not even a slight indication of what the item he is making was given. She could tell it took him a lot of planning, however. This did not just emerge out of the blue. This guy has almost everything planned out and just needed the right person to put it into action. It just so happened that the lucky or perhaps unlucky person was her. Kali held no doubt that all of this was going to blow up in either her or Godfrey’s face.

“Don’t kill the Rune Knight,” was his last warning as he sent her along to do his bidding.

She almost wanted to scoff at his face and punch the oversized waste of space. If Kali knew nothing of this dude’s greed, she would have mistaken him for one of those good Samaritans that toiled for the good of mankind. He had her kill and steal from a Holy Knight and was engaged in illegal shit. What in the world gave him the right to ask not to kill now?

She knew why he did not want her to kill. Killing bandits wouldn’t warrant a search as intense as killing Rune Knights would. Godfrey wanted to keep himself out of trouble as much as possible and he couldn’t afford to get their attention on him now that he is putting his long-made plans into action. But knowing the reason did not mean she accepted it. Godfrey’s stats in her book was dropping to very dangerous levels.

As unsavory as Godfrey was, Kali was still very curious about what he had planned. So chewing down her growing dissatisfaction, Kali made her way towards the meeting point where men would be waiting for her signal to move towards the Rune Knight checkpoint. They were so easy to spot that Kali almost wanted to write an ode to their stupidity. At least they had the sense to cover the illegal cadmium with ordinary iron ores. She gave them the sign to slowly start moving towards the checkpoint, making sure they blended in with the other merchants while approaching the Rune Knights stationed there.

She mustered all the souls and tears of every actress she has ever feasted on before dramatically falling into the arms of one of the Rune Knights. “Help!” she cried, burying her face on this random knight’s chest. Oh, how Kali wanted to kill them instead…

‘Have these men not seen a woman in ages?’ Kali almost wondered out loud as she held onto the blushing and fretting Rune Knight while the others gathered around to see what is happening. “How can we help you, Miss?” They asked one after another, their eyes taking in Kali’s damsel in distress appearance.

‘Oh, why don’t you unalive yourselves?’ she nearly wanted to say but held back and told them how she was separated from a friend and got lost. Kali was a new face for anyone in the town of Baska so it took no effort to have them believe her and ‘escort’ her towards wherever she wanted to go. Kali told the name of a random inn somewhere further into the city and looked back to make sure the shipment was getting past the checkpoint while she had the guards mostly distracted. They weren’t distracted enough to completely leave their post but she had achieved the effect of getting them to be careless with their job and that was enough.

“I didn’t think you could make it!” The goliath like man had the freaking audacity to say that to Kali’s face as she struggled to keep a smile on it. Far from the anxious, fretful man from the morning, Godfrey was now looking a lot more energetic and happier. ‘Of course, you would be happy. You’re one step closer to whatever you are planning, aren’t you, Godfrey?’ Kali sipped on her tea while watching him check the cadmium ores.

Kali had very meagre knowledge on ores but cadmium was far too famous for its toxicity. They were made illegal many years ago and any sort of transaction involving it continues to be monitored even to this day which is why Godfrey had such a hard time smuggling it into Baska. The thing Godfrey is making could not possibly be anything good. She was curious but not invested enough to spend more time on it. All she needed was money and besides, Godfrey’s plans couldn’t end with just a magic scroll and toxic ores.

“I’ll see you later,” Kali smiled knowingly at the flustered man as she grabbed her rewards and walked out the door. Oh she will definitely be seeing him soon. She just knew.
