Ulyssia shifted her weight from one foot to the other, standing at the edge of Marigold City's farmlands. Her tall frame was like a shadow over the shorter Farmer Jim, who squinted up at her through his round glasses. His face was lined with years of stress, and though his body still seemed capable, there was a tiredness in his eyes that softened Ulyssia-just a little.

“So,” Jim began, brushing dirt from his hands onto his patched trousers. “You’re the one they sent to help? Figured someone more. local, maybe.” His eyes darted to the werewolf's spear, the Soul Bringer, resting casually over her shoulder. The blade seemed to sparkle in the sunlight, giving it an otherworldly glow.

“D-does it matter?” Ulyssia’s voice was low, gentle, but like the first growl of an approaching pack of wolves. “So, tell me about the vines.”

Jim nodded hastily, not wishing to waste anymore of her time. He gestured for her to follow him to the edge of his fields, which once grew in neat rows of wheat and barley but had since been overtaken by violent, thorny green vines.

The vines pulsed-faintly, almost as if they were breathing. Ulyssia's eyes widened though her sharp eyes traced the way the plants seemed to grow in strange patterns, curling toward the heart of the farmlands.

"They started about a week ago," Jim said, adjusting his glasses. "First, just a few tendrils. I thought it was some weed I hadn't seen before. But then. they just kept growing. Faster than I could cut 'em down. Now they're everywhere and-" He stopped, his voice falling. "-and they're alive in a way that I don't quite understand. Dragged one of my workers into the fields yesterday. Poor kid. Didn't even have a time to scream."

Ulyssia’s expression didn’t change, but she tightened her grip on the Soul Bringer. “You should have called for help sooner.” she said softly.

“I did!” Jim protested, throwing his hands up. “The Duke sent some of his guards last week. None of ’em came back.” He paused, then glanced up at her. “You’re different, though. You’re a Blue Pegasus mage, and you're not scared.”

Ulyssia didn't say a word, but her eyes simply stared and blinked, her expression unreadable. Fear wasn't about there not being any danger; it was about not being prepared. She was prepared. "Stay here," The werewolf said simply, stepping toward the field. The earth beneath her boots was firm, but as she drew closer to the overgrown farmland, it softened, almost like the earth itself was fighting her progress.

The first vine struck faster than she expected. It lashed out from the beneath her, aiming to wrap around her ankle but Ulyssia was ready. She swung the Soul Bringer in a wide arc and the blade sliced through the greenery with ease. The vine hissed and recoiled, dark sap oozing from the wound. "Interesting," she muttered, narrowing her eyes. The plants weren't just alive; they were. hunting. As she went deeper, the air thickened and became increasingly humid, carrying scents of damp soil and something sweeter, almost sickly.

The vines began to get more aggressive, striking in pairs and, at times, in threes. They wrapped around her legs, and she had to tear through them with fast strikes of her spear. It was exhausting work. Every step seemed to wade through quicksand, and any pause gave the plants a chance for attack. By the time she reached the center of the farmlands, her arms ached and her breathing was labored. The center of the field was quiet, except for the rustling of vine leaves in the wind. In the middle of the clearing, half-buried into the earth, was a glowing blue orb. It pulsed with an unnatural light. This had to be the thing that was mutating the plants.

"There it is," Ulyssia whispered, the volume of her voice low. Undeniably, the orb was the source of their strength. But destroying it wouldn't be easy; she could feel the energy radiating from it, almost like a heartbeat.

As Ulyssia drew nearer, the vines ran wild. They surged towards her in a frenzy, their movements more erratic and desperate than before. One wrapped around her wrist, tugging hard enough to drag her off balance. The werewolf snarled, wrenching her arm free with a burst of strength, then drove the Soul Bringer into the ground, using it as leverage to push herself forward.

The orb pulsed once more, this time even stronger, and a wave of energy rippled through the air. Ulyssia staggered, barely able to hold her feet. The vines seemed to draw strength from the orb as their attack grew fierce. She gritted her teeth and summoned the dormant magic inside her. A small golden glow encased her hands as she raised them, channeling energy into the Soul Bringer.

With a mighty swing, she brought the spear down on the orb. The shockwave of the blow sent ripples across the clearing, and for one instant, there was no movement or sound.

Then the orb cracked, its light dimming. A low, guttural rattling sound echoed through the air, almost like a death rattle. The writhing vines around her shook to stillness and then began to wither and shrink back into the earth.

Ulyssia stood amidst the silence, her chest heaving as she caught her breath. What had been overgrown farmland before was now eerily quiet with the vines shriveled into lifeless husks. She wiped the sweat off her brow, then turned and began the long trek back to Farmer Jim. When she emerged from the fields, Jim was waiting for her, his expression a mix of relief and awe. “You did it,” he breathed. “The vines. They’re gone.”

Ulyssia nodded, planting the butt of the Soul Bringer into the ground. “The source was a magical artifact...destroyed it. You will...need to watch...the land. If anything like this happens again, call for help sooner. This could have gotten out of hand.”

Jim was laughing, his voice trembling. "You have my word. Thanks. Really. I'll be sure to keep you in mind the next time this happens yeah?"

He pushed a little pouch of jewels into her hand, but Ulyssia barely looked at it. She cocked her head as if confused by what he had said. She hoped that she would never have to help with something like this again. "Oh, haha...n-no. Please do not call me for this task again. I am not very well suited for it." She said awkwardly. Jewels were hardly important to her, but she wasn't about to argue. She tucked it into her belt, gave Jim a curt nod, and turned to leave.

As she walked away, she couldn't help it that her gaze fell back to the fields behind her, quiet and still. The fight had been exhausting, but it had also been. grounding. Purposeful. Maybe that was why she kept taking these quests because for a moment, they made her forget the weight she carried.

Or maybe she just hated losing.
