Eva’s steps paused right in front of the sturdy, seven-meter high silver gates. Beyond it, a path laid bare like a regal, winding serpent, beckoning her as if an evil charm enchanted just for that moment alone. Awaiting at the end of its fangs, a tall, enormous edifice cast their ominous shadows on the lone road. The sun, behind the tower of the building was almost hidden, overtaken in time with grey rain clouds. It was probably one of those days that wise old folks predicted of thunder and storm and advised their younglings to stay in, comforted by the strength of four walls that rose around them under the warm name of home. Eva’s steps were slow yet sure when she closed the distance between her own ‘home’ and herself. For many years she had called it that until in the long run, Eva discovered that it was not a word given to an empty building. The beautiful manor of whites, greys, and silver smiled but eerily as it pulled her forwards. It seemed to have been waiting, the winds swishing around Eva as it urged her up the short stairs up to the front door, a large frame made of the best mahogany wood a noble family like the Vanderbilts could afford. What was she doing there? How long had it been since she abandoned it all? Her strong desire to grab the world in her own hands had made her walk out the same path she just traversed. Maybe it was the ignorant dreams of a silly child or maybe it was the insufferable wounds impaled in her by time’s hands that had led her to take that step outside the ivory gates. Evangeline Vanderbilt then, simply Evangeline now. She was a Rune Knight, a lover of art, and a precious glass doll for the cameras. It was never easy, the cold nights, the self-doubts, the daggers she pushed into her heart with her own thoughts, everything that grabbed at the base of her legs and tried to pull her down the pitch black surface of a sea that was the only representation of her soul. Every minute was a struggle for her to reach where she now stood, her feet leaving the banks. However, she had come back again, standing so close to the same spot she left, her ankles already buried in the water. A hand closed over the golden knob of the door and –krchek- twisted. It opened in front of her so very slowly as she stepped inside. The crystal chandelier, light reflecting off the pristine walls, a room fit to enact a ballroom that hung to her old memories was now dull, cold, and dark. They whimpered their story in the stillness of the air, of how they have been close to abandoned. The Vanderbilt manor, Eva realized, had not been visited in years. But why? It had been the same as in her memories when she left. What changed? She had been so stubborn to ignore everything related to this family so much so that Eva never followed up to what happened to them. Where were they all? |
