Though she'd been training all morning, she didn't really look that sweaty... The mess of crystals and shimmering dust all over the place didn't lie though, after all the sculptress had effectively exhausted her mana once, meditated to recover it, and then exhausted it again. As a result, she had somewhat mastered her new spell - leaving half the training room turned to crystal - enough that she'd feel confident using it in the fight to come, but the ridiculous amount of magic power needed to cast it meant she'd have to conserve as much of her power throught whatever fights came her way.

Which in turn meant getting used to her sword. Grabbing the glimmering falcata with one hand, Alisa twirled it in a circle beside her before holding it diagonally in front of her, like a Kendo practicioner would wield a Katana. She'd already gotten used to its weight and feel, learning how to treat it as an extension of her body...

"...But that alone won't do.", she muttered throwing two quick slashes in the air, then testing them on a training dummy. It didn't hit back.

Truly, Alisa needed to master her new weapon, perhaps even more than she needed new spells. She knew some sword forms, and as far as technique was concerned, she could wield a sword as well as the next person... But technique wouldn't be enough. She needed the kind of training she could only get from someone to whom the sword wasn't just an option to consider, but an essential tool for survival. To improve her sword fighting skills so drastically in the short time she had left, simple solo training wouldn't do it. She needed a partner, a teacher, a master of the same weapon she now held, someone who'd react skillfully to her offense and put all of her defense to the test...

...And Finn was the best swordsman she knew, not to mention the only one she actually trusted with her life.

She'd heard he was in Hargeon, but had yet to meet him personally. However, she vividly remembered promising him a training session, before the Demon's attack on Era drove her away from Magnolia. As she practiced her sword slashes on a crystallized training dummy, she could only hope Finn had gotten her message. With both their wandering, adventurous lifestyles, simply relying on random encounters might take a while...

The message had come rather randomly, but was not at all encrypted. It gave no cryptic vibes, nor did it dance around the idea of what she wanted. She had picked up a weapon and wished to train it, to push herself beyond the cage that she never knew she was in. Alisa Vollan, friend and guildmate of the young adventurer, had been trapped. She had trained her magic, and excelled at it. In her pursuit she had neglected her body, though she had hardly even realized it. She had not allowed herself to take on any and all opportunities for growth, and indeed hadn't even thought of it as an option for the longest time.

The freedom it took to confine ones own self into a situation was something that he envied, if only for a moment. He looked up at the open, Pegasus blue skies and wondered about whether or not he'd always realized it. He, too, was trapped in a cage. It was not of his own design, but rather enforced by nature or God or whoever was to blame for fate. He was born without the ability to take on a magic, unable to master the elements or bend mana to his will through his own body. For the life he chose, there would be no spells or summons to save him. Only his own body, and the gear he procured along the way.

When word came that she planned to open her horizons and move forward, he couldn't have been any happier for her. She deserved to have a legitimate chance at breaking the cuffs that held her back. She deserved a shot at stepping beyond the stars, and pushing further than anyone else had thought possible. That would only be possible by taking herself off the tracks, which was exactly what she was doing now.

Whether or not it was luck, Alisa had Finn's full respect. That meant that before they could learn together, the first lesson must be taught.

And that was precisely what he came here today to do.

The doors to the guild hall opened, and the brighter lights from behind the dimly lit room shone through behind Finn. The inner light reflected only off his eyes, giving the image of a demon entering its lair. Stepping forward as the doors shut, his eyes adjusted to the new area. It was not dark per se, only dim as compared to the clear skies and shining sun. In his hand was his sword, already unsheathed and gripped firmly between his fingers. His eyes were different than what Alisa had ever seen on him.

He came here to give her what she asked for, but she could not have known precisely what it was she awakened. For this would be no mere training exercise, but a legitimate fight between two swordsman. It was the respect he gave to her, and the acknowledgment of her own proficiency despite her fledgling status with the blade. He stared at her in silence as he walked closer, closer still, until only ten meters separated them.

"Are you ready?"

He didn't need to say that this would be a fight. She was smart, she'd be able to tell. This would be their first chance crossing one another. This would put him at a disadvantage in any future fights they had. She'd be learning the heights he had within his grasp, while he would be unaware of precisely what she was capable of. After all, she'd not be using magic here.

After some time spent wondering whether or not Finn would get her message and when, she couldn't help but ponder on how he'd start his first lesson, if he did. It's not to say her mind wasn't in the sword slashes she threw at the test dummies, yet the fact that she still had focus to spare for other thoughts mid strike spoke volumes in and of itself. Truly, she could be here for hours and still not learn as much as she would from training with finn for half an hour... Which begged the question, would he favor training form or sparring, or perhaps an all out swordfight? She knew he enjoyed a fight far more so than Alisa who preferred not revealing her strength until victory was assured.

Her guildmates had seen the closest to her full power than most, and Finn even more so as they'd been in the same team at one point. Alas, this training session wasn't about showing her full strength, as her message made it clear she had no interest in using magic, or anything that could detract for pure swordfighting technique. Besides, one look at the training grounds should hint how she had more than two days' worth of magic practice in a single morning, so she wouldn't really miss it.

She didn't have to wait much longer. Hearing the doors open, she turn around in hopes he had finally arrived, and gladly confirmed it when he did. Ah, that look in his eyes... So that answered her other question; how he intended to train her in swordsmanship. 'Face me not as a friend but as an enemy', he said without uttering a single word. Naturally Alisa narrowed her eyes at the sight and turned her glimmering blade his way, but even then she couldn't keep her lips from widening into a faint smile, an excited tingle flowing down every nerve in her body... More than worry or anxiety over her potentially limited skill, she felt an insatiable curiosity towards her limits.

Just how well could she fare against a skilled swordsman as she was now, without using her magic? She imagined that was exactly what Finn wanted to teach her.

Clearly, Uncle Gottfrid would like him, and in the absence of her father, Uncle's opinion was as close as a guy could get to paternal approval... That ruthless training method he once used to drill martial arts into Alisa; by constantly reminding her of the difference between their power, and how many of her enemies would be stronger than him. Though it nurtured her obcession with overwhelming power, he'd never gotten her to stop thinking in terms of killing an enemy with minimum effort.

"Yeah. Come whenever you'd like.", answered Alisa calm and sternly, meeting him halfway and holding her ground at about ten meters. She held sword vertically in front of her in a firm but flexible stance, ready to spring to action once her keen eyes picked up the slightest motion.

The training room's wards would prevent them from killing each other even as they went all out, but it wouldn't stop damage from accumulating or either of them getting knocked out with just the right hit. Yet she chose to ignore that, and face Finn as if her life depended on it.

It seemed that Alisa was everything he thought that she would be. She could tell with just a glance at her guildmate how things would be happening, and she did not need clarification or direction. She seemed almost relieved about his action and the way he handled himself. He could not know the reason as to why she seemed happy, only that she did. It was a positive thing, something that would lead to him enjoying trying to teach her. He was not a teacher, and he knew that. He was however a fighter. Through trial and error, she would slowly but surely build herself a foundation.

As she fell into her stance, the sword was held in front of her perfectly vertical. It was a gentle stance, one that showed preparedness. Finn's own blade was held to his side, loosely balanced between his digits and yet firmly held so that it would not be lost. Taking a step forward, and bending his knees ever so slightly, he allowed himself to get into a solid stance. There would be no verbal confirmation of readiness, as the two of them took on their stances. Instead, once they had both settled, he began.

Lifting his back foot up and placing it forward, closing the distance between them to about eight and a half meters if counting by the leading leg, Finn would dash forward. Only a single second would go by, but the distance between them was cut down to only two and a half meters. Finn had lifted his blade in front of him diagonally, and kept his body low to the ground. It gave less surface area to have to protect, and due to the lofty way in which he held his sword it would be easy to move it at a moments notices. Unlike most people, his sword was quite literally made to be light. It allowed for quicker and more sudden movement, and the ability to be gentle with his grip yet firm when needed. The sheer amount of possibilities that it granted him were endless. If she attacked, the counter would be brutal. If not, he would then act.

Having closed the distance on the girl who maintained a defensive posture, he was ready to begin the offensive had it not already been sprung upon him. Planting a foot forward, he would slash his sword with his arm just below full extension. His body was slightly leaned forward, and with the length of the blade, it would still come short of her body. However, her body was not his target. What he had been aiming for was her blade, held out before her. His blade aimed just above the hilt, where the base of the blade sat. His cleave was full powered, and would slice her sword in two if not dealt with. However, nearly all responses to this offensive would open her up to further advancement. How would she react? Or would he even be able to do this? If she did a preemptive strike, he'd of course have followed a completely different timeline. But would that work in her favor?

As the two swordfighters measured each other, Alisa held her sword close to her chest in a high defensive stance, her eyes following Finn's every movement, his stance and what angles he could attack from. The way he gripped his sword gave him a tremendous advantage to acceleration when he swung his body sideways - all but inviting him to slash across - though nothing prevented him from cutting upwards either.

The woman held her ground as he stepped towards her, wondering if he'd simply walk to the ideal range or cover it in a heartbeat... And wasn't too surprised when he chose the latter... Felt more like his style, clearly, straight ahead while limiting her options in the process. Her eyes could still keep up, and seeing him hoist his sword before swinging it in an arc, she reacted immediately, calculating her defense from the combined length of his arm and weapon. This range, that wide swing made it all too easy to avoid taking damage... Assuming she herself were his target. She quickly guessed how that was actually intentional and he intended to destroy her sword first before taking care of its wielder.

So she leaned back and lowered, pulling her sword wielding hands closer to her body and tilting that back too, dragging her lead foot slightly towards the rear. A well timed movement from her whole body at the last possible moment, swaying like a leaf in the wind, yielding enough room for the tip of Finn's sword pass harmlessly by her own. Even if he were just striking with his fists, the momentum from such a powerful swing would leave him open for a short moment; so once she had dodged, it was her turn. Her instincts sharp and ready to shift her weight back forwards, in a single attacking step angled toward's her opponent's right flank, passing him by: a counter attack using the artists greatest assets, speed and coordination, as a completely fluid motion.

Swiftly shifting her weight back to her right foot and kicking off it, her left hand snapped straight forward, releasing her own sword to incercept Finn's right wrist and grab on to it. Were he weaker than her, merely grasping him like this would keep him from swinging his sword effectively, but Alisa doubted that would help her much here. However, it would give her an idea of just how light that sword of his really was. Simultaneously, her right palm opened and rolled under the hilt, before clasping her sword in reverse grip. This was Alisa's ideal stance, far more than the high guard she used initially, sacrificing reach in exchange for faster speed as she turned.

So as her left foot took the lead at Finn's flank, she'd turn her torso towards him and cross her arms shut in front of her like a scissors. Her left arm went on above towards her right, tugging her opponent towards the direction he leaned his body, possibly taking away his much needed balance if he wasn't careful. Her left arm would sweep below opposite it's twin: Towards the left alongside Alisa's step, slicing the Falcata horizontally across the side of Finn's abdomen, between his hip and ribcage. The crossing motion of her arms served two purposes: Pulling Finn into Alisa's counter to keep the weapon on target, and easily turning into a defensive guard as she executed it, bending her elbows as needed. The strike itself, executed from a scarce one and a half meters away, made full use of Alisa's curved weapon, and the reverse grip made the pull out game much easier in the off chance her blade got stuck. Hitting him square would mean a massive bleeding, with some luck profuse enough to give her the victory.

But she knew Finn would never make her life that easy, he wasn't the type of guy who would do that just to make her feel better over skills neither of them knew she actually had... Her movements cold and calculated, Alisa kept her eyes on him before, during, and after the whole counter, expecting retaliation sooner rather than later.

Finn's slash passed harmlessly in front of her, and he was prepared for her to make any number of offensive stances against him. A stab for his body, or a slash. His left hand was prepared to deflect and continue if that had happened, though it did not. His right hand quickly made an arc past her, leading his blade to miss her completely. Due to how light the sword was the blade finished its slash quickly. Despite that speed, she of course knew such an attack was incoming. She had stepped back, putting herself and her sword just out of reach of his strike.

What she chose to follow up with was to try and stop his mobilization. She stepped in and reached with her left hand, grabbing in her hand his right wrist which held the blade. As she reached for it, he allowed her to grasp it. That move would turn to bite her in the ass though. As she looked and made the effort to grab his wrist, which would take quite a bit of focus for such a feat after the swing, he'd slam his head forwards. This motion was aided with him pushing his body forward, slamming his forehead into the bridge of her nose. She had closed the distance so much, and her eyes were so focused on the wrist, that such an unusual attack may never have been seen coming.

The blow would likely daze her, and in that moment Finn would follow up with a quick left jab into the inside of her left arm, assuming she had not already let go. The blow was aimed at the nerves that traveled along the inside of the bicep towards the armpit. If landed, it had the potential to completely numb her arm. Even if it had not numbed it, the blow would cause enough damage for him to rip his arm free.

The exact moment his hand was free, be it when his headbutt occurred or his jab went into place, his arm would slash inwards again towards her stomach. The blade would be aimed at her much closer body now, close enough to open her up. If the blow landed, the fight would be over. Otherwise, the slash that was coming on the inside of his body would be much more controlled, meaning he would not be leaving himself as open this time around.

That sword of his was fast... Faster than would be possible even with his strength, enough for Alisa to suspect something was up without grabbing him. The slash accelerated too quickly despite such a wide slash - only a little slower than she'd expect him to be swinging just his arms - leaving her wondering just how light could his weapon be. It didn't look light at all, but the results were there, leaving Alisa no chance of grabbing his wrist as fast as her she intended; faster than he'd have been able to react. So she was left with two choices: Overcommiting and grabbing his wrist anyway, or feinting and pressing forwards on the quickest path to her foe's body, grabbing onto his elbow. She natually picked the latter option as it still allowed her the desired result, while executing the rest of her attack exactly as originally planned: As she unleashed the inward motion of both arms in tandem, being close enough for a parry also allowed her Falcata to proceed unimpeded and deliver the deep slash to his gut, pushing up on his elbow just enough to keep him from moving it down fast enough.

This quick adjustment shortened the distance between them to a single meter during the slash - much closer than Alisa originally intended - but her positioning of his right arm ultimately made it impossible for him to charge through like a goring bull. If he did attempt it, her left hand could easily absorb some of the impact: She had a fair amount of leverage on his upper body - limiting his ability to build momentum and make the most of his strength - with Alisa's foot already at his flank and the rest of her body on the way, the distance would gradually increase and give them both more time to react to attacks.

If her attack wasn't intercepted, Alisa's rear left foot would follow in immediately after as it moved closer to its sibling, stretching that leg to kick Finn's right shin, sweeping him off of his feet as she moved to increase the distance between them an extra half meter. The foot would trail close to the ground as she kicked, to both shorten and disguise the attack's execution time.

Regardless of whether the attack connected or not, if unstopped Alisa could easily lead into a firm, low guard where her left arm shielded her face and the other her body, with her blade aligned with the forearm, leaving her ready to react to her opponent's counter attacks or repositioning...

His head had connected without error, and thus knocked her head backwards. Her hand had therefore not gripped his wrist, and she did not do anything to react to his horizontal slash into her mid section which opened her up. Due to the wards in place though her innards did not spill out onto the arena floor as they would have without them. Instead, the damage healed back as soon as it was made, draining her only of her endurance. The sudden and jarring pain to her abdomen would likely be enough to drop her to a knee at the bare minimum. Regardless, it would confirm that their battle was finished.

It was not a bad one at all. Many seemed to let themselves fall under the false impression that battles were long, drawn out things. That may have been the case for armies, but not for individuals. Battles lasted a very short amount of time on average, being settled by a single error or capitalization. For this fight to end the way it did, as quickly as it did, was merely the norm. He had beaten others, and been beaten by others, in similar fashions in the past.

Kneeling down and offering her a smile, he put a hand on her head and ruffled her hair ever so slightly. It was not enough to mess up the strands, but enough to offer condolences. "That completes your first lesson. From here, we build."

A single moment of hesitation was all it took. Risk it all with an all in gamble? Or take the low risk, low reward route you can control? In the end she didn't know which hurt more, getting her nose broken and her gut slashed into, or the grim reminder that had Finn been an enemy, she would be dead.

Unsightly... Was this the extent of her resolve? Unforgivable...

She knew fully well what had driven her father to leave, and also knew how at that point, all he wished for Alisa was a peaceful life. She had ignored her father's hope with confidence in her skills, certain she could find their enemies before him. As she felt to one knee and remained conscious solely from the grace of the protective wards, she couldn't help but grit her teeth and ball her fists. Even knowing she was facing a stronger opponent, nay, perhaps for that very reason she wouldn't so easily forgive herself for her weakness. It was his hand on her head that brought her out of that torpor:

"Yeah. Looking forward to it.", she couldn't help but chuckle even through the frustration as her hair quite readily draped back down, pretty much as straight as ever. Unlike most people believed she never needed more than a minute combing her hair every day... Yet she couldn't shake the most important though in her head, smiling resolutely, "Though I expect a rematch after I train some more."

That's right, Alisa would never stop challenging him until she won, but if he managed to keep getting stronger faster than she did, by all accounts she

planned on fighting him again and again. She could train all her life, yet she also understood experience was the only way of preventing another outcome such as this one. She'd need it in order to survive the coming battles, and the ones after that. But for now, she needed a break, and then more training...
