Akira had been expecting a letter. So she accepted it eagerly and after reading it, slipped it under Tsuru's door. She'd used the little influence she had over her partner, to urge him into a quarantine . He needed to keep himself from unfairly subjecting people to flashes of his annoyance. So this was the best solution, till his unfathomable anger at the gang, their intentions and the unwillingness to stop it despite their polite request, was at least manageable if not entirely abated.

She herself hadn't taken the rejection too well, but slaughtering them all would not be the appropriate solution.This was especially a delicate matter, given the fact that the doctor's assumptions had been right all along. The gang's decision to do this, was in retaliation to the indifference of the authorities when no action was taken after the incident at the mine. She sympathised with their emotions as much as she sympathised with Tsuru's, but an eye for an eye did indeed leave the whole world blind.

If they were to take justice into their own hands, who was to stop another band of enraged people from assembling and wrecking havoc yet again, to avenge the Knight's decision. The cycle had to be stopped. The first priority was to save the people and killing a few of their members would probably not stop them from poisoning the water anyways. The head had to be caught and given a trial so that he or she felt that their voice was heard... following which they'd be incarcerated to the fullest extent, for their over reaction or that's what she hoped for.

Akira had asked Haru to remain in his room, alone… until he was required. After what he did to those gang members when they refused to stop what they were doing, he didn’t blame her for house arresting him. Without retaliation, the swordsman went into his room, let her lock it behind him and laid down on his bed. He had always felt guilty afterwards whenever he had lashed out at someone. But this time was different. Even after calming down, his urge to find Mattoro and chop his head off seemed uncontrollable. Maybe his partner sensed that and that was why she wanted him to stay away from people.

Getting off the bed, Haru sat on the floor and began meditating. It didn’t help much. The moment he closed his eyes, the maniacal face of Mattoro popped up and he wanted to put a blade through it. There used to be days when he believed these bad elements could be converted into good ones and violence wasn’t the way to achieve justice. But that was when he had no memories and hadn’t experienced the world for what it was. After a year as a Rune Knight and seeing all kinds of crimes that people are capable of, he lost hope that he could protect the innocent while also not hurting the guilty, let alone bring about a change in the guilty one.

As he pondered on how much he had changed in less than a year, he heard a soft rustling noise near the door and opened his eyes. It was a letter from the doctor, summoning them again. “Let’s go. Don’t worry. I’m leaving the sword here,” he said, as he waited for his partner to open the door.

'No, that's hardly the solution Tsuru...' she responded with a sigh as she unlatched the door and took an instinctive step away from it, as though the healer was something volatile and just might retaliate against her, since she kept him caged up most of the day. Perhaps giving into that instinct was impolite, she mused and cautiously stepped back towards the healer and held out her hand. 'I'll keep it. We've alerted the gang, they know we'll be working to foil their plans.' she reasoned softly, hoping he'd understand the implication that resistance, the violent sort, was still a very likely possibility in the future.

It was unfortunate that the doctor too had revealed himself when setting up the meeting, now the gang was probably convinced he too was involved, which was true after all. She hoped that Gerard worked well under pressure and had indeed finally chanced upon the cure. The gang and their leader Mattoro's vengeance against the town was so strong that they hadn't even bothered with an antidote. It was one of those no-going-back plans. The degree of anger a person could harvest and reap in the name of revenge was cold indeed. Akira wondered if she, or Tsuru were capable of it. Even though her reflection was brief, she quickly realised that she very much was... and clearly, so was he. It was not a realisation she wished to savour.

Akira holding onto his weapon was not going to stop him from using it. The lightsabre was attuned to him and he could simply summon it to him so long as it is close enough. So far, nothing has been able to stop the hilt from reaching him when he called for it. Nevertheless, he handed the hilt to his partner with his expression clearly telling her that was a useless precaution.

“Break it if I pull it without your permission,” he said, as he walked out of the room.

The two of them had been to the clinic so often since they came to Baska that the healer automatically made his way towards it without even thinking. Once they reached the clinic, they found the doctor lost in his work. He only noticed them after they were practically a foot away from him. “Oh! Good. You two are here,” he said, seemingly relieved. “I think I found the cure. But… I don’t yet have the means to disperse it town-wide,” he announced, as he rummaged through his large cupboard. The doctor then turned towards them and showed them a small vial. “It’s not enough and it needs to be ingested to take effect, which isn’t going to be easy considering the aggravated state of the patients…” and the doctor went on, ranting multiple solutions and then discarding them one after another due to impracticality.

Finally, after what seemed to be a full minute of him talking to himself, the doctor finally turned his attention to the Knight duo. “I got it!” he yelled suddenly, laughing. “I just a need a few items and I think we can make more of the cure,” he declared, writing frantically into a piece of paper. When he was done, he thrust the paper into Haru’s hands and requested them to fetch the items listed there, while he sets his lab up.

What he said was true, she'd witnessed him calling the blade back to him on multiple occasions. In fact, he boasted about that ability for the longest time after he'd earned it. The Shimada was merely hoping that he wouldn't lost control to the point that he'd be willing to hurt her in the process. She debated if she should bring that fact up or not, it would definitely be dangerous snatching it out of her hand if things went wrong... But he merely handed the weapon and instructed her to break it if it came down to it.

Perhaps, it was imperative she shared her reasoning after all. 'It won't come to that...' she started hopeful and then quietly added 'and if it does, rest assured that I won't have the time to break it and you'd be compromising the mission...' she paused with a heavy sigh as he walked past her. 'And putting me at risk.' she said softly, she was fairly certain he heard it, but she'd muffled her words out of embarrassment and fear that he wouldn't care as much about that as she hoped.

They walked to the doctor's clinic yet again. It felt like their shoes alone had worn this path over the last few days. She allowed him to lead, and silence brewed between them. She leaned against a wall and observed Gerard's little melt down as he considered his options and finally settled on one, burdening the knights with the simple task of collecting things. She peered over Tsuru's shoulder to read the list and realised that she actually knew why he wanted what he'd asked for.

Akira didn’t have to remind him of the fact that he might be putting her at risk if he was being rash with his sword. He was well aware of it and hoped his anger didn’t make him forget about her. It was, in fact, one of his worst fears lately. “All the more reason I get this under control,” he muttered back.

The task seemed simple enough. Collect a bunch of materials that the doctor needed in order to mass produce the cure and disperse it easily without having to hold down every single enraged patient. There were three major things that the two Knights needed to gather. One was a special magical crystal; the second was just a simple aerosol can; and the last was a sample of water from the main source infused with mana.

Haru’s healing methods were rather simple. Except for the aerosol can, the young man couldn’t fathom the need or purpose of the other items requested. Unfortunately, he didn’t have the time to learn about it from the doctor; so, he simply followed the instructions. Pocketing the paper, the healer walked towards the shop where they could supposedly get the special magic crystal. Haru hoped the shop owner would be willing the understand the circumstances and part with the item without much hassle.

She chose to keep any more concerns to herself. It was obvious that he was as perplexed by his own emotions as she was. Obviously, he too wanted to get them under control. There was no point harping on about it, she just hoped the little message stuck with him when the time came. She knew what it felt like to lose it, although her darkness just slipped out of control, the emotions associated with it came after people around her reacted the way they did. She seemed to have left that past behind, so she chose not to dwell on it anymore.

Their job was given and it was time to put their game face on. Hopefully, there wouldn't be any need for confrontation if they remained a little sneaky. 'Mind if we take the alleys?' she said, before directing him towards one, without really waiting for his answer. It was apparent that Tsuru didn't quite understand the reason for the ingredients the doctor had picked. So she decided to lighten the mood and share her knowledge with him. She tried not to sound too patronising, but probably did.

She took pride in knowing things and making connections. She didn't have to explain the can for too long, he too had figured that one out. She told him about the crystal, she'd read that it possessed properties that allowed it to create a lot out of nothing. Finally, she explained that the water was already contaminated and likely needed their mana to be purified before it could be used as a solvent.

The swordsman simply followed his partner as she directed him through the narrower alleys. He could trust her with the shortcuts, as she learns them during her night patrols. On their way to the shop, she also enlightened him on why the doctor needed the items that he did, and he listened carefully, keen on learning. The healer truly didn’t find her patronizing even if she was, as he was more interested in the information than her tone.

After a short while, they reached the shop mentioned in the paper and entered it. The shop owner gave them a warm welcome and asked how he could help them. Haru was quick to mention that they were there to acquire the special magic crystal in order to mass produce the cure for the plague. However, the shop keeper simply laughed and declared the crystal was part of his precious collection and not for sale.

“He must be kidding, right?” Haru said, staring at his partner all wide-eyed and disbelieving. He truly couldn’t understand how one could care about their collection when people are being infected. There was a high chance that the shop keeper could get the plague any time and go on a rampage through his own shop, destroying everything. “You do realize this is to help the entire town?” he asked, trying to understand if the shop keeper understood the importance of their request. Even after that, he remained stubborn and refused to sell the crystal.

She was glad that Tsuru didn't seem all that annoyed with the way she shared her information. His eagerness made her grin. Perhaps things could lighten up after all. She avoided people in general though, this time along with the healer. She wanted to make sure the gang didn't get a whiff of what was being constructed. So far everything worked out as planned. Unfortunately, the alleyways were actually a longer route to the shop, she hoped the delay didn't cost them too much.

While Tsuru was busy bargaining with the shopkeeper who clearly had no intent to share the precious crystal, Aki was busy scanning the shop. She noticed that the crystal they wanted was displayed at the very back, but he had replicas of sorts lined up in front. She raised her eyebrows for a brief second, wondering if he sold duplicates. The crystal could probably generate duplicates of itself after all...

She wished she could let Tsuru in on the plan immediately, but given his inability to lie would make this a hassle. She simply plucked one of the duplicates and went to the back. She replaced the original with the replicate and returned, acting like she'd just picked the original from the front row. 'Its fine, I guess I'll just have one of these instead...' she muttered softly, acting crestfallen. 'Pay up...' she said, winking at Tsuru.

His partner didn’t come to his rescue as he bargained with the shopkeeper. Shaking his head, he turned back to the man and tried explaining the situation again. “I get it. But I can’t part with the item over a mad doctor’s hypothesis,” the shopkeeper said, shaking his head violently. Haru wasn’t one to give up that easily. So, he attempted convincing again. And again. And again. The two got into a heated argument while the Lunar mage swiped the original and replaced it with a duplicate. The healer had acted as a distraction for her trickery without even realizing.

The shopkeeper, however, seemed relieved that at least one of them was hearing him right. “Yes! Please. Take as many replicas as you like,” he said. “But-” Haru began, but quickly stopped himself as he saw Akira wink. He realized what she had done; while he didn’t approve of it, her approach seemed to be the only way to do this without wasting much time. “Fine…” he said, sighing, as he handed the shopkeeper a large pouch of Jewels and walked out.

“Let’s hope he doesn’t find out any time soon,” he said once they were outside and on their way to collect the next item.

She chuckled softly at his naivety yet again. 'Do you think he tells everyone they're replicas?' she asked rhetorically while she led them to their next site. She went onto explain, just in case he missed the point of her question. She was convinced that the shopkeeper only revealed that information to them because he realised that they wanted the stone for its true purpose and that they were knights. The replicas were probably easy to sell to those looking to make a quick buck by simply making larger volumes of their product relatively cheaply. It was wrong, but then it was also one con conning another.

In this case, the shopkeeper had something to lose should the Knights have found out the truth later. Besides while the threat of losing his life and of all the people in the town wasn't one he took too seriously, just in case it was true, he'd have to bear a heavy burden. At least in his honesty he was giving the Knights the opportunity to look elsewhere. The townsfolk really didn't have much faith in Gerard, it was no wonder that the man had to resort to beckoning them and even she had been guilty of suspicion. They needed to collect some water now and this could prove dangerous considering it was the very point of origination of the gang's ploy.

The next thing most important thing on their list was the mana infused water from the main source. Haru was ready to encounter any of those filthy gang members who might be there poisoning it again. In fact, he hoped he found a couple of them this time and manage to catch them in the act. The duo still hadn’t found any solid evidence linking the crime to the gang, after all.

After about ten minutes of walking, they were finally on the outskirts of the town and in the vicinity of the cave. From afar, it seemed deserted, with nothing but signboards and a beaten path. After entering the cave, Haru would promptly hold onto Akira’s hand and follow her as she guides him towards the well. Even during the day, the insides of the cave was pretty dark and his eyes took forever to adjust to what little light that managed to get through.

Once they were at the well, it was time to fetch the water from the well. Just then, the healer realized they had come to collect water without any container, as they never went to fetch the aerosol container prior to coming here. “Uh… How are we gonna carry the water?” he asked stupidly. His words echoed off the cave walls, as though there were spirits around them mocking them for their idiocy. He hoped Akira could conjure something tangible with her darkness or light with which they could carry the water.

She wasn't to keen on escorting him through the darkness this time, given his reaction before. The Shimada was ready to give in to her instinct and pull away when she saw him reach for her. But she didn't. The young Lunar mage decided to not be petty and snatch away her own hand as revenge for his behavior. What would being cold in retaliation earn her? It was apparent that Tsuru was going through changes and that he didn't have too much control over him.

He'd extended her the courtesy and understanding when she needed it, it was only fair she at least did the bare minimum. She did realise that his gesture was out of need. She couldn't possibily leave him struggling in the cave, much like she could leave him floundering against the newfound rage and darkness inside. Perhaps this could lay the foundation for her to reveal the truth about her part in the events of the festival. Maybe he would understand after all.

Once they reached the well, his questions had her snickering softly. 'Did you forget we are mages?' She paused abruptly through her chuckle and frowned. The Shimada had been under the impression that he could use his density magic to create a pocket in the air for the water. That way it would be easy to carry and not leave them handicapped should a fight ensue. Now she wondered if she'd overestimated his abilities. 'You can use your magic to help us collect the water right?' she asked hoping she didn't betray too much condescension.

The hand-holding seemed a lot more comfortable this time compared to the last. While he did it out of need, the young man would be lying to himself if he didn’t accept the fact that he was looking forward to this again, at least to correct the mishap he caused the last time they did this. Holding her hand as she guided him through the dark seemed to have a bigger meaning than its literal one in Haru’s head. He felt the same with his anger lately and maybe she would be the one to guide him out of that darkness too, and all he needed to do was just let go. As much as he wished for someone else to solve his problems, deep down, he knew only he could make the needed change within.

Haru never really used his magic for everyday chores. So, he was quite surprised when Akira didn’t see the problem that he was seeing. “I can try… Never done anything like it before,” he said, underestimating his capabilities. He had in fact done better with his magic. The healer had deflected magical projectiles by creating pressure gradient channels using his density magic. The same principle applied here and he understood that instinctively.

By dropping the pressure rapidly at the top of the well, the healer managed to cause a small stream of water shoot up like a fountain. As the water came to the top and stopped for a moment before falling back into the well, he solidified the water into a spherical ball of ice by decreasing its density slightly and then forcing the water to crystallize by convecting the heat away to the nearby air. In doing so, he infused a lot of mana into the water, essentially making an orb of exactly what they needed. Surprised at his capabilities, he handed it to his partner with a huge grin. “Didn’t know I could do that…”

A gentle smile painted her face when the water jetted out of the well. Exploring new avenues of his magic would surely aid them in more ways than just the occasional absence of utilities. She'd imagined a very different sort of invisible container, she didn't expect him to simply freeze the purified water. A shiver caused her to shudder softly as she reached for the icy orb he offered. Before her fingers could touch it, the cold it emanated warned her. She pulled her hand away.

'Oh no, I'm not carrying that.' she said shaking her head. She went on to explain how she'd expected something more elegant. That Tsuru would manage to somehow allow this water to swirl around and follow them around by altering the density of the air around it to hold it in place. When he'd told her about the properties of his unique magic, she'd done some reading of her own, of course, this was eons ago.

However, she still had faith. She quickly chuckled to not make it seem like she was diminishing the work he had done, especially since he'd taken it upon himself to pour the mana into the water and she'd been of no help. 'Can't you just make it float around behind us?' she added before taking his free hand into her own and leading them out of the cave to collect their last item.

The healer chuckled as his partner refused to touch the icy ball. He didn’t mind it much, so the swordsman decided to carry it himself. Besides, to ensure the sphere didn’t melt away, he had to keep supplying a little bit of his mana constantly at a slow rate anyway. So, it was better he held on to it than her.

Her question made him feel a little conscious of his abilities, especially because what she asked if he could do was technically possible with his magic, but required a tremendous amount of concentration. However, his desire to impress her kicked in and he committed to the act. “Of course! That’d be a piece of cake,” he lied. Creating a channel with two constant but differential pressure pockets was rather easy. But to keep the orb floating, he had to keep switching the pockets. As he attempted it, he struggled to set it up in a correct cycle for a bit, making the orb wobble and almost fall. However, soon enough he got the hang of it and the icy ball was moving along with them while swinging slightly like a pendulum.

Glad that he didn’t mess up, Haru turned to give his partner an accomplished smile. Unfortunately, however, he had spent almost all his mana in his little show and had no clue that he would actually need it when they go for the aerosol canister. It should have been the easiest of the three, or so they thought.

Akira giggled softly as Tsuru showed off with his magic and accomplished something that she'd truly thought he was capable of and expected from the very beginning. 'There you go!' she teased and winked allowing the exaggerated condescension to lace her words but in a playful manner. There was no malice in her banter and no will to show him down in her casual manner. She did watch the orb of water with some fascination as its contents swirled around inside and followed the two Knights on their way to yet another shop. Obviously, Akira did well to avoid the shopkeeper they had swindled earlier.

Meeting him again would serve no purpose, in case he managed to figure out what the two officers had been up to. As they made their way to the door to enter the shop, the Shimada peered through the glass as a precaution. What she saw made her pause momentarily. Her fingers reached for Tsuru's hand to stop him from entering yet. The man who sat behind the counter looked like he was in some sort of a trance. He had an expression that fluttered constantly. It changed between betraying pain and then went impassive. She merely made a gesture towards the window to get Tsuru's thoughts on the matter.

Haru frowned when Akira teased him, but got over it quickly enough. It is true that he had not completely mastered his magic, for it was one complex one. The potential was high, but so was the difficulty. Maybe Akira would have fared better if she had something like what he did, considering the amount of reading she did all the time. Keeping the ball condensed was harder than he thought and began to drain more mana as his concentration dropped due to the tiring process. He could barely manage the walk back to the town store, but he tried not to show it or complain.

When the finally reached the store, Haru couldn’t wait to get in, sit and grab a glass of water. But as he eagerly moved towards the door, his partner stopped him and pointed towards the window. Haru squinted to see through the slightly misty window, and completely misunderstood what he saw. “Is he okay? Could it be that he is having a heart attack?” he asked, his eyes growing wide. Without waiting for an answer, the healer ran in with energy he never knew he had. “Mister! Are you okay?” he yelled as he barged in. To his shock, the man wasn’t having a heart attack; he was plagued. Upon laying eyes on Haru, the shop keeper jumped over the counter and began chasing him. “AHHH!” the healer cried as he ran out through the door away from the store. The shop keeper chased, but the healer was too fast for him. At least the store was open now for his partner to get the canister.

Little did they know that their adventure was going to end on a sour note. The Shimada had always thought that there would be time before the cure would be needed extensively. She had not imagined that the gang would act so soon. What she witnessed from the window of the shop made her realise otherwise. She let go of her partner, shaking her head when he suggested heart attack, but before she had a chance to verbalise her disagreement on his theory, he, as usual had already jumped right in.

He burst out through the door almost as soon as he's burst in. She merely flattened herself against the window hoping to not draw the attention of the man running after her partner. She watched the chase long enough to gauge and predict that her Tsuru would get away unharmed he was much faster than the stumbling, sick man.

She took the moment to slip into the vacant shop, her eyes scanning the shelves for the aerosol can. According to what Gerard had asked, he'd prefer if the can was big enough to contain all the water and the fair bit of the cure that would be increase in volume. Finally, she found what they were meant to get and hauled it off the bottom row, rolling it out of the shop.

The plagued shopkeeper relentlessly chased the healer. While Haru ran initially out of shock, once he realized taking the sick and violent man further away from the shop would help his partner to fetch the large canister that they wanted. Once he had run a few hundred meters away from the store, the healer began to take sharp and unexpected turns to lose the chaser. However, at the same time, he had to ensure he wasn’t leading the sick man deeper into the town, where he would be causing panic and spreading the plague further. So, he ran towards the outskirts and then around the town towards the doctor’s clinic.

Haru was surprised by the stamina of the shopkeeper. While the healer was faster in the beginning, the continuous running had taken its toll and he couldn’t keep the same pace anymore. However, the infected shopkeeper didn’t lose any speed, thereby catching up to him faster than he had anticipated. Hoping that his partner would bring the canister and the crystal to the doctor, Haru ran and ran until the clinic. The doctor noticed him being chased and called for help. There wasn’t much time left, however. So, the moment Haru was next to the doctor, he dropped the ice ball on his hand, turned towards the zombie shopkeeper and cast his signature spell, Phase, making the man buried until his hip.

Once she was done collecting the canister, the Shimada thought it'd be prudent to just return to the hospital and wait for Tsuru there. It was highly likely that the healer would find a way to lure the guy to Gerard so the poor shopkeeper could be healed. She wasn't sure if it'd be wise to waste any of the little serum that the doctor had procured on a single man, so it was up to her to get there as soon as possible. Lucky for her, she was at least as fast as her partner and he no doubt would have to take a strange route to ensure that the plague crazed man did not get into a tussle with any other citizen.

Sure enough, once she got there a very anxious Gerard was dealing with the supremely uncooperative patient, much like Aki, the doctor remained practical, against his instincts no doubt. Since she had already figured out how the ingredients were going to be used, she ran her theory the doctor. Gerard was pleasantly surprised at her knowledge and gave her the green light.

Swiftly mixed the crushed crystal with the serum and the purified water and added the entire concoction to the aerosol can. It all worked out in a way, the shopkeeper proved to be the first successful patient of the final product. Gerard looked far more at ease, but his worry had clearly not left him. There was still more to do.

Having spent all his mana, the healer knelt to the ground sighing softly after binding the shopkeeper. Immediately after, the doctor picked up a dart gun and shot one at the shopkeeper’s arm. For a doctor, he sure was fearless, as he approached him way too closer than Haru would have expected any citizen to. It would seem the dart gun was to sedate the infected man. In less than a minute, the serum took effect and the shopkeeper went unconscious. By now, the people have gathered around the clinic. The doctor commanded a couple of strong men to pull his patient out of the ground and take him in. The two men hesitated for a moment, but didn’t have the heart to say no.

Haru helped the doctor and the two citizens to carry the patient. By the time he was on the stretcher, the anaesthesia had worn off already, which came as a surprise to the doctor. He struggled to hold the man down as the others tied a restraint. It was just then that Akira reached the clinic. The doctor and she spoke for a moment, after which she disappeared behind the lab door. After restraining the shopkeeper, Haru went into the lab to help his partner. It was mostly Akira doing the concocting, while the healer walked around assisting her. When the serum was ready, they tested it out on the shopkeeper, who got cured almost instantly. The doctor looked pleased and thanked the two Knights, as he took the canister from them.
