A request for a woodland meeting, and asking for me personally~ Humming gently as she headed into the treeline that surrounded the slice of civilization that was Orchidia, Sofia Serena couldn’t help but feel especially upbeat about the little quest she had opted to undertake today, smirking as she walked and feeling a hint of excitement in her heart as she moved with speculative steps.
Is our inspector abusing his power a little for his own enjoyment, I wonder? Dressed with a little more raciness than she probably usually would have given the lingering nip of coolness in the air as Winter stubbornly refused to give way to the full warmth of spring, she was glad for the tights that she wore underneath the thigh high socks and tiny black shorts she had chosen to show off the length and shape of her legs, looking to impress the man she had met a little more than the last time she had found herself meeting him for a ‘job’.

I certainly hope so~ Still not entirely sure exactly why she had been called here, she walked along in a pair of cute but comfortable boots, a leather bang hanging from her shoulder as she wore a thick sweater along with a matching set of a loose knit cap and scarf, thinking about the last time she had occasion to encounter the Rune Knight Inspector. Charming the man into meeting her for a drink after work with her fluttering lashes and boldness, after sharing a few sherbets Sofia had done herself proud by stealing a clutching grasp from the man’s arms as she suckled on his lips, while that was as far as things had gotten it was enough for her so far. He seemed to like playing hard to get, after all.
 
It doesn’t seem exactly his style, but would be a nice little surprise… Snickering to herself as she imagined the stiff lawman waiting around in the woods for her with a posy in one hand and a basket in the other, there was something amusing and endearing about him looking awkward and anxious as he lingered. Certainly an unlikely scenario for such a duty bound man but Miss Serena sensing a spirit of romance hidden underneath that serious demeanour, while the young vixen wasn’t exactly looking for a tale of undying passion and longing, she didn’t mind a little sweetness now and then. Unfortunately, as she rounded a thick patch of trees and found the man she had been imagining at the centre of a crowd, it would seem that hope would go disappointed, for now at least.

Looks like it’s a business call, shame… A small sigh escaping the lungs of the leggy lady as she shook her head and her hair out at the crowd of scholars and scientist that had seemed to have gathered around her darling inspector, while the party she had found wasn’t exactly the sort that she had been hoping for, there was no point in walking away now.
Guess I’ll have to wait until after for other fun then~ After all, she was still curious about what Nilan wanted and why he had gathered these odd fellows together with her, even if it wasn’t to take advantage of a nice chance to spend a little one on one time with her in the woods…

“Bonjour Monsieur, it is nice to see you again, Inspector~” Offering her sweetest smile as she approached the man in charge of the operation the second she caught his eye and tossing a little Minstreli his way to really add to the flirtatious charm of her greeting, Miss Serena giggled softly as several of the scholarly heads in the group turned around and seemed to grow pinker at her appearance, though none seemed more rewarding than the reaction of the man at the head of the group.
Just what are you thinking about upon seeing me, I wonder? The sweetness of my kiss, or the feel of my soft embace? Hopefully… Both~! Nilan blushing for what seemed to be the first time since the Valerican Vixen had met him, though the pinkness that shone in the cheeks of the guy in charge was subtler it also seemed far sweeter, and prompted the young mage to quietly speculate as to what might be running through his mind in that moment of recognition.

“A-Ah, Miss Serena. I’m glad that you can join us today, we might need your help…”

 
Certainly by no means missing the little stumbling in the words of Mr Nilan and finding even that rather a charming little trait, the fact that she could fluster this sombre and dutiful man gave no small boost to the ego of the young enchantress, making her lick her lips as she kept her gaze locked on him and hope to see more of it as she continued to keep his company.
“Oh well there was no way I could refuse an invitation from a man like you, was there?” Unable to resist the urge to tease at this tall fellow as he nodded to his colleagues and then slipped away from them to talk to her, to the satisfaction of the wicked water witch she found the colour in his cheeks growing even more prominent as she tossed him a little wink, the girl clearly having found a way to exploit the little hole in his armour she had discovered in her last mission alongside him and shamelessly exploiting that fact for her own amusement.
 
“Ahem, well, um… That’s greatly appreciated, of course. I should uh…”
 
The inspector in front of her seeming a far cry from the smooth and somewhat stern disposition he had shown to Sofia upon their first meeting, while the fellow she had met then had managed to get her attention, it was this softer and more sensitive side that held it. A man that had such simple severity certain to grow tiresome rather quickly, as she managed to strip that layer back and find the sweeter soul that lay underneath, the wicked wench couldn’t help but feel herself amused and intrigued by the complexity.
 
“Oh yes, you certainly should, Nilan~ How could I think to deny you?” Also completely unable to refuse the urge she had to tease him either, though Miss Serena could sense that her potential paramour was keen on taking things in the direction of matters of business, she felt herself unable to do fully facilitate such a transition really. After all, with such a cute colour clinging to his cheeks as she toyed with him, how could anyone resist such a tantalizing option once presented with it?

“N-now then, the reason that I’ve asked for you to come here is related to the incident you helped with only a short while ago, involving the giant vine?”

Finally relenting and letting her man of action and attention get his work out of the way with relatively little resistance once she had her fun with him, though Miss Serena wore a smile that spoke of further mischief in her mind as she leaned against a nearby tree and listened to what the inspector had to say, for the most part she gave him her rapt attention.
Heeheehee, he looks cute even when he’s trying to be serious… Lips curled like the cat who got every ounce of cream that was on offer as she gazed in an adoring fashion toward Nilan as he got underway with his description, though the blush she had inspired in this tall man had largely melted away as he talked, the fox still felt charmed by his bearing all the same.
 
“While what you did seemed to quell the growth we had seen in the town itself, after pooling reports from reconnaissance and the theories offered by the expert minds that had gathered to solve the problem, we quickly realized that the issue was not limited to what was occurring within the city walls, which was troubling…”

The stern dedication that shone from the inspector once he launched into his role a trait that had tickled the temptress from the first moment she had met him, though she was far more at home in the lands of light heartedness and lascivious longing, all the same it was something that she appreciated all the same in this man. Thoughtfulness and a sense of duty to the people qualities that were valued even by a vixen with such a strong penchant for misbehaviour as Miss Serena, they were qualities that helped our heroine see the brightness of the lawman in front of her, and while their tastes didn’t exactly overlap in the fullest sense the teen found something she could respect about the man all the same. Beyond his obvious good looks, that was.
 
“So you’ve found some brothers and sisters to our dearly departed beanstalk out here?” Not lacking for shrewdness herself by any stretch of the imagination of course, while her potency for investigation probably paled when it was put next to that of this impressive young detective, with the clues he gave her Sofia was quickly able to grasp at the point he was driving at. Snatching that simple point in the air and finding that she was a little curious about the plant she had felled herself, though she’d probably be happier sharing smooches and sandwiches with this hot slice of hunk, looking into that peculiarity didn’t seem like a terrible way to spend her day.

“That’s right, though they are by no means as tall or strong as the specimen that dominated the city skyline, their species does seem to be the same, and that isn’t all… There’s also some other odd stuff going on with the forest as well?”
 
The sense of mystery and adventure only seeming to deepen with every ounce that the inspector revealed to her, as the tone of Nilan’s voice in response to her guess showed he was a little bit impressed by the estimation he had made, the girl sensed she had quite the opportunity to awe him even more with what she could do right here in the forest. Looking up to this tall lawman in more than just the literal sense, while perhaps it spoke of a childish spirit that the teen wanted to earn some form of acknowledgement and appreciation from the man in front of her, it wasn’t the worst form of motivation in the world either…

“Some of the plant life in this area has started to show some unusual development, here, look at this…”
 
The inspector frowning as he continued and moving over toward the crates and cabinets that had been arranged in the small clearing that seemed to serve as the base camp for the woodland expedition he had arranged, Sofia hummed gently and followed the man with her arms pulled behind her back and a big smirk on her face, wondering just what he might reveal.

“Wow… That’s actually, kind of beautiful~” A jar presented to her by the knight that contained a small collection of dirt at its bottom and an elegant stalk climbing up from that dark base, while for the most part the vixen had mischief in her mind for the most part up to this point, she couldn’t help but feel awed by what Nilan showed her. A slim stem climbing up from the soil in a pale, almost metallic shade of green that seemed to arc and coil around itself like a helix, this path was interspersed with slim, curved leaves that jutted outward, but the real prize was at the top.
 
“Almost like it was made as a decoration?” The plant crowned by a bloom that looked as if it was a mix of elements from a rose and a water lily to make a cascading arrangement of teardrop shaped petals, what was most fascinating about this flower was the colour it shone with, or more accurately the colours. Chameleonic in its natures and seeming to never hold the same tone for longer than a second, a fresh shade from anywhere in the spectrum seemed to sweep over the floret as it moved through a seemingly random pattern in a way that was almost hypnotic.
"It's hard to stop staring at it?" The sun breaking through the tree line above them and illuminating the surroundings, Miss Serena still detected a slight glow from the head of this lovely little plant even in these reasonably well-lit conditions and found herself wondering just how pretty it would look in the dark, shining like an ever changing firefly.
 
“Yes, already we have several florists and gardener’s interested in trying to cultivate further samples of this one, but I feel we would be remiss to hand it out before we’re sure it doesn’t pose some form of danger, like the beanstalk did?”
 

Sofia feeling so fascinated by the flower that when Nilan pulled it away she felt almost annoyed and rather disappointed by the loss, after blinking for a second or two and shaking off the spell of allure its image had cast on her the young mage looked up toward the inspector and couldn’t help but feel a note of mischief filling her mind as he spoke.
Heeheehehee, would be a fine gift to give to a woman you liked as well, wouldn’t it? Grinning to herself for a moment as she imagined the inspector sweetly offering it to her as a little token of affection, whilst it seemed unlikely that such a duty bound man would do something so self-serving, the sweetness of the deed would only be amplified if that were the case. She would certainly work hard to return that level of affection shown, and would probably love doing it too!


“This is also but one in a wide array of reported samples that seem to be lurking in the woods, with those weeds, so part of the request here would be to retrieve some other examples for further study?”

I think it’s supposed to be guys that get their girls the pretty gifts, but… Humming gently to herself as she set off into the deeper parts of the Orchidia woodland beyond the camp she had met the charming Inspector Nilan, Miss Serena didn’t fail to see the irony in her task, especially after having been shown the fascinating flower earlier on. Perhaps the job of going into the wilds and picking some pretty blooms a chore that suited a pretty girl like her, despite the convention for situations like this the vixen did not mind being the one to be doing the gift giving here really.
 
I suppose if it’s going to make that cutie pie smile, I can overlook that~ Happy to find herself with a new situation to leave that tall and subtly rugged man at her disadvantage again, his appreciation would be a far greater prize than any posy or trinket that could be provided and likely a route toward getting a little more underneath the guard of that polite and proper fellow, much of the interest that Sofia had in the inspector lay in her curiosity as to what lay beneath his dutiful mask.
 
After all, I’m sure there are plenty of interesting ways he can make it up to me… The biggest thrill she could find in snaring these ‘good boy’ types the excitement that followed once she had gotten them to cut loose with her a bit, even if it did make her a corruptive influence at times, there was a sense of delight and achievement in peeling that layer back and seeing a side that others had not. It was like finding treasure that others would fail to notice despite being right in front of them, which made it all the sweeter a discovery.
 
Now, just to find some of these woodland oddities~ So with that prize clear in her mind, Miss Serena marched onward, one hand resting on the bag that was slung over her shoulder and also was now stuffed with bottles and vials to capture her floral prey. Not quite so overdressed as she attended to her task like last time, while Nilan had given her a set of tough gloves to protect her hands and a pair of goggles that the girl currently wore around the hem of her hat, she was thankfully not decked out in the smock that had half-drowned her last adventure with the odd wildlife of Orchidia.

It sounded like they were pretty rampant around here, given they’ve had to close off this section of the forest to stop people falling foul of them? I wonder if any are dangerous? For the most part taking her mission in her stride and remaining somewhat light hearted as she roved through the woody wilderness that surrounded the northern town she had chosen to call her home for the time being, though the inspector had warned her to be on her guard in case she ran into anything that might turn hostile, Sofia couldn’t help but feel upbeat and a little bit whimsical as she toured the thickets. Plucking a small flower that looked rather common and harmless and idly teasing the petals of it as she moved along, it had to be said that girl was not taking her mission particularly seriously at this stage, but whether she would be able to keep that relaxed stance up would remain to be seen…

Isn’t that? Slamming on the breaks as she very nearly passed by something in the green growth she might have otherwise written off as a simple sapling, after taking a moment to take in the sight of a vine like protrusion that seemed to be aiming toward the sky from its subterranean base, the brow of the blue beauty creased just a little as she looked over a herbaceous growth and found it looking rather familiar. Not entirely sure what about the sprouting stalk that had caught her eye above a casual sense of recognition but as she studied it realizing that everything about the green stem reminded her of a ‘foe’ she had found herself battling recently, while it was scaled down so it stood only as tall as an apple tree in loftiness, Sofia certainly recognised a ‘baby’ of the beanstalk in what she saw and moved a little closer to investigate.

You know, it doesn’t look so bad at this sort of size? Looking the length of the ‘child’ up and down as she moved nearer to is and found it actually like the sort of thing that wouldn’t look particularly out of place in a farmer’s field or even a nice homely garden, with the crooked coil that it carried and the small leaves this ‘Beansprout Jr’ looked rather innocuous and inoffensive, making it feel like more of a pity that it would likely grow up to be the same kind of hazard that Miss Serena had faced when she first met Nilan.

I’d wager the right kind of nature magic might have this effect, or the wrong kind of potion spilled in the soil~ The Valerican Vixen certainly a girl who preferred a little action and adventure over reading a reference book though by no means lacking for intellect because of this, as the youngster studied the sample she had found, she felt a little excitement in having the chance to analyse it.
I’d wager the right kind of nature magic might have this effect, or the wrong kind of potion spilled in the soil~ A little preoccupied in the idea of felling it’s big brother in her task before, she hadn’t mused too much on the nature of her adversary in that encounter so it was nice to get a private chance to do so, even if it would probably come to nothing.
 
If it had any pods, I’d be tempted to save them and see if it could be ‘bred’ into something useful, it would certainly help the harvest to be picking peas or beans the size of beach balls~ Perhaps sharing a little more in common with her bookish older brother than even she or others would notice when given the chance, the small part of Sofia that was a scholar felt just a little bit fascinated by the potential of what she saw in the plant, and the boon it could offer society if it was made to be that little friendlier to people. It was unfortunate then that the girl was here more as an executioner than a gardener, really.
 
“Sorry, ‘little’ guy, but as interesting as you are, I’m afraid a Beanstalk Reaper like me can’t leave you be…” Letting out a small sigh as she remembered the trouble that the older sibling of this pant had caused and realizing for all the research value it was better not to let it keep climbing toward the sky, after taking off one of her gloves the girl paused and gathered her mana toward her hands before snapping her arm across herself in a smooth, scything motion. The energy she had built up unleashing itself like a blue blade that lashed out from her and cut through the arm-thick stem of the plant with ease, though Miss Serena had a far easier time pruning the smaller sample of Jack’s Giant Stalk, even as the sour stench the sap that seeped from the stump gave off stung her nostrils the girl couldn’t help but feel like felling such a rare specimen was something of a shame…

This time not the eyes but rather the ears of the young enchantress being what lured her attention toward another oddity, it was entirely possible that had Miss Serena been keeping up the hum that she had entered the forest with then she would have been completely ignorant to the soft sound of popping that gently echoed in the grove she through. As it was the girl silenced as she contemplated the plant she had just chopped down in the moments before, it took more than a couple of those almost chirping eruptions to catch the awareness of the young Valerican, who after finding the source found a new source of fascination.
 
“Hmmmm… That’s definitely unusual?” The blue brows of the beauty creeping upward as she took in the sight of what looked to be a grapevine hanging off the branch of a tree in the distance, from what looked to be a stationary snake made of herbaceous matter that had grown from the ground and snaked around the trunk and arm of a chestnut tree it seemed that small, balloon-like orbs seemed to be sprouting from stalks and swelling with size, only to burst and start again. Quite an interesting sight to behold as a thin, presumably air filled skin of sap seemed to be generated from the spiralling stem of a different colour each time, given the fact that Nilan had told Sofia to be on the lookout for specimens that were out of the ordinary she certainly knew that she needed to grab a sample of this popping and almost playful little plant and headed straight for it.
 
“You’re a cheeky little guy, aren’t you?” Amused by what she found in front of her and that sense of wonder only increasing as she drew closer to it, while Miss Serena might well have just been imagining things as she neared the coiling creation she could have sworn that as she did so the bursting she saw started to increase in pace, just a little. Doubting that the plant was truly aware of her proximity but still it appearing like a fun little fact if true, as she giggled and examined the low hanging sprout the young vixen found another little oddness that occurred as one of those gas filled sacks seemed to not only swell more slowly than its brothers but also stubbornly resist the process of bursting, making the teen ogle it for several seconds wondering when it would finally blow.

“O-Oh!” Holding onto her breath with anticipation as she watched the single ‘bubble’ grow and leaning a little closer to see if she could see anything that was different about this one that set it apart from the group, after reaching the size of a watermelon Sofia found herself giving a yelping gasp of surprise when finally it gave up the ghost and ruptured right in front of her, ruffling her hair because of the pressure inside it. However, that was not all that was within the orb.
Sweetness? The gas that the orb exploded with completely colourless but not without a certain flavour to it, while the proximity of the observer and the small size of the preceding eruptions prevented her from sampling the scent of the instances before this one, the young woman found her nose filled with an almost saccharine presence that was not wholly unpleasant, and in fact seemed rather nice.

Not flowery, but still a little like perfume~ Shaking her head as the aroma lingered in her head like the whiff of a fragrance that one was using to make oneself seem lovelier, while the splattering of sap that dusted the lower part of her face was off putting enough that Miss Serena did not linger for an encore, she was at least for the most part amused as she wiped the dew away with the back of her glove and then pulled a pair of cutters from her bag.
I wonder what Nilan will make of it~? Goggles pulled down over her eyes next and the young woman rearing up onto her toes a little as she lifted her hands to cut off one of the tips of the vines that carried a multitude of those little bursting bubbles, Miss Serena was glad to see that their eruptions were not diminished by the dissection and quickly placed the little sample she had found into one of the jars she had brought with her, feeling on the whole she had made rather a nice find with this particular vine variety…

“Wuhahahahahaaaaa!” Clearly the spirits of Sofia rather high as she continued her mission in a rather buoyant manner, she guffawed as she grasped hold of a sapling with used it like a poled to whirl around on. Hanging by a single arm and her grip just enough to stop her weight pulling her down as she looped around and around like she used to as a little girl, the young vixen had to admit she hadn’t felt this good in quite some time, not since that sweet kiss she had given to the inspector on their date in fact.
 
“Why hello there~” Beaming from ear to ear as she spotted a low-hanging branch extending to her like an arm and stumbled over toward it on bow legs, while the girl felt more relaxed than ever she also felt rather joyous and giddy and couldn’t help but indulge her sense of whimsy, grasping the ‘hand’ of the tree and bowing forward like a man of the court before placing a soft kiss on a leaf she liked the look of. Feeling like the most childish things were the most stupendous things she could think of, it did not seem odd at all the Miss Serena that she had suddenly felt so good, with all thoughts of her mission and the objectives there in seeming to be like a secondary concern compared to the enjoyment she was having.
 
“Oh now then, that won’t do at all, will it?” Inhibitions definitely dampened and the girl feeling as if her head and shoulders had a great weight taken off them, as she spied the way that a shrub looked to be shivering in the winter coldness, all of a sudden Sofia felt as if she was entirely too warm and wrapped up and so plucked off both the woolly hat she had been wearing as well as her scarf to offer to the poor, unfortunate plant.
“Much better~!” Beaming with pride as she placed the bonnet on the bush and then completed winding her scarf around it as well, with a giggle the blue beauty bowed forward like she had before bouncing off buoyantly as she broke into a skip, having felt oddly amazing ever since grabbing the sample of the bubbling branch a few minutes before.
 
“Ahahahahaaaa! This is amazing!” Leaping and lurching about as if she didn’t have a care in the world as the spirit of enjoyment continued to flood her body with energy and endorphins, though it might have been more accurate in a technical sense to say the gas she had inhaled from the plant had left her in something of a frenzied and frantic state, that fact escaped the teen as she broke into a bout of ballet because of the rush she was feeling.
“I’m amazing!” Moving surprisingly well for a girl who had largely ditched her dancing classes as a child in favour of climbing a tree or playing a prank on her brother, the deftness of her form likely came from the fluid and graceful moves that she had learned to use with her water magic.


“Oh dear it seems I’ve fallen down! How careless!” Still by no means a trained dancer but a girl who found she was oddly exhausted by her exertion, after a minute or so of larking around Miss Serena came to a halt as her legs gave out on her and sent her rolling across the ground, but she didn’t mind that one bit.
So comfy... I should just... Rest my eyes, for a second... A little breathless and feeling as if she was due for a good nap, the vixen licked her lips softly and then rolled over to look at the sky, and the fluffy white clouds that filled it, then with no reason not to found herself craving the comfort of a nice little nap…

A word that sounded so very familiar seeming to ring through the ears of the young mage as she found herself stirring from a slumber that felt so well deserved, as the girl groaned and lifted what were a very heavy pair of hands to her eyes to rub them, it felt like she had managed all of about a second of sleep as Miss Serena tried to stimulate herself into a more waking state of mind, but it was hard.
Who…? Eyes opening in a blurry fashion to see the shape of someone with dark hair looking over her, while she tried to reach out to the person and pull them closer so that her struggling gaze could focus on them a little better, instead it was her that seemed to move as a pair of arms much stronger than her own seized her underneath the shoulders and thighs and lifted her body up.
 
“It’s OK, we found you, you’re safe now!”
 
Pawing at the face of this person who remained unrecognisable by her eyes, while the vague vision of the vixen failed her ears at least seemed to register something at least a little familiar about the voice she heard, not to mention the scent.
“N-Nilan…?” That commanding tone seeming to be sweetened a little more by the sound of concern as he spoke, with that and the flavour of hard work and modest cologne filled her head Sofia knew exactly who was holding her, and smiled weakly as she looked up toward the big and strong man who had seemed to seize her weak body from the grass.
 
“…Did you m-miss me~?” Not really knowing why he was here or why she was on the floor and feeling like she had just run about a thousand miles straight with a bear on her back, the blue beauty felt a comfort in knowing that the current apple of her eye was holding onto her, snaking her arms around his frame and cuddling it close to her, her weak tone of voice carrying a hint of flirtation as Nilan’s presence seemed to activate the automatic charm she liked to show around the boys and girls she was sweet on.
 
“Let’s get her back to the clinic as quickly as we can, she seems like she’s almost out of mana!”

“I feel like a… Like your… princess~” Still rather out of it and the details that seemed to sprout in her memory only confusing her more as she was carried through an environment even less distinct than the face of the fine gent who supported her, while it made no sense to her that one minute she was in the woods and the next she was being carried around by this upstanding lawman as the sound of footsteps told her he wasn’t alone, Sofia chose to overlook this and simply bask in the moment.
 
“Are you here…” Smiling as best she could and wishing she had the energy to reach up and give this prince charming that was carrying her away a nice kiss on cheek or even the lips for what he was doing, despite this small disappointment the youngster couldn’t have felt happier.
“To take me to your castle~?” The only shame really was that she hadn’t had met this man sooner, the girl though, like back when she lived in a palace. That and the fact that all too quickly she fell asleep again and couldn’t enjoy the ride he gave her in those strong, sweet arms…

“Urrrggghhhh…” No small amount of groaning accompanying the second occasion on which Miss Serena found herself waking from a slumber, though this one felt a whole lot more restful than the last, she couldn’t help but feel a whole lot worse in spite of that feeling of rest. Head pounding like there was a none too small man inside it striking a gong within her brain over and over and over again, the throat of the young Valerican felt as if it had been replaced by the driest sand that could be found in Desierto, whilst the rest of her body felt as if she was supporting the weight of at least two or three herds of elephants on top of her.

“W-What… What did I drink last night?” Smacking her lips to try and get some moisture in her mouth but the process seeming somewhat futile, with a voice that seemed far gravellier than any morning after a big night that Sofia could remember the young woman spoke to herself to try and jog her memory, lifting up an arm that felt as heavy as lead to rub her eyes as she did so.
 
“Did I find some of that Cordovan Brandy again?” The scene that the foreign fox assumed was responsible for her current state seeming to be absent from her archive for the moment, with how destroyed she felt from the night out that she guessed she had been on, there was only one drink that fitted the symptoms of what she was feeling. The bartender who had served her it on one of her travels remarking on how it was considered an illegal material in several countries across the globe because of how potent it was, the intoxicant was as perilous as it was illusive, and a prime candidate for what Miss Serena guessed might leave a girl in the state she was in. Unfortunately, it seemed someone nearby disagreed.

“Actually, from what we’ve discovered it seems you inhaled some plant-base airborne toxin which, when combined with having your Mana almost completely drained, proves to be less than the perfect cocktail…”
 
A crisp and commanding voice breaking the air with a beauty that seemed so much more enticing than the oppression that Sofia was feeling from her ‘hangover’, though the teen jolted as she suddenly discovered that she wasn’t alone in what she had presumed her bedroom, all too soon that fright turned into delight as her eyes focused on a figure that seemed too good for words.
“N-Nilan? W-What are you…?” The light that surrounded her seeming to be so bright that it made her eyes throb with pain to even look at anything but that agony worth it when she could focus on the rugged and refined features of a certain Rune Knight Inspector sitting beside her bed in a chair she did not recognise, while initially she was confused to discover that she was sharing her room with this dashing figure she quickly let her mind race as to the reason for his being here. Straight to the gutter, in fact.

“Oh, did we~?” Licking her lips and lamenting the fact that whatever state she had ended up in had robbed her of a memory that was sure to be one of her sweetest, while the maladies the girl suffered made both her mind and body rather sluggish, all of a sudden Miss Serena did not feel too bad now that she knew she may have really friendly with a hunk like this. Totally wrong of course, and in fact currently laid out in a room at the Orchidia clinic after a brush with death that was as subtle as it was close, she had at least earned the chance to live in delusion for a moment or two today, hadn’t she?

“So, what you’re saying is… I screwed up pretty badly there, huh?” A glass of fresh, cool water and the right tonics later finding Miss Serena not only recalling the circumstances that led to her little stay in hospital but also feeling just a little bit humiliated by them, while she was neither embarrassed nor a stranger to things like walks of shame or remembering details of difficult night’s before, this one seemed different. Underestimating her task and letting herself get dosed by one of the things she was supposed to be protecting the world from, and then nearly coming a cropper because of that, she felt her pride as a mage had been damaged a bit not to mention the image she held in Nilan’s eyes. He, however, seemed sympathetic at least.
 
“I wouldn’t say that, Sofia… 
We were walking into the unknown and even I didn’t anticipate that things would become quite that problematic, I really underestimated the situation…  If I’d known then I never would have let you operate alone? 
It was my mistake…”

Lost a little in his own sense of responsibility for what had occurred, as Sofia looked toward the look of worry and guilt that the inspector showed and felt a throb of guilt pass through her as she did so, snaking her hand down to his to hold it gently.
“Yeah, you really screwed up there soldier~” Relieved a little to learn that Nilan wasn’t holding what happened against her but all the more affected by the pain she could see in him, though the man seemed a little shy about the gesture she made, the vixen was not to be deterred and snaked her fingers with his own as she let off a joking line with a wink to catch his eye.
 
“However, you did come and save my life I suppose, so it wasn’t all bad~” Digits weaving with those of the still guilty looking lawman and smiling at him gently, Miss Serena couldn’t stand to see anyone she was close to looking like they were in pain and despite the state she was in, felt energized by her desire to correct it. Smirking and sitting up straight despite the wooziness that lingered and threatened to make her ruin the moment but tossing up whatever was left in her system in a rather unladylike fashion, Sofia spun her legs around and slid closer to the man that had been waiting when she woke up, not minding one bit that the hospital gown she was wearing was loose enough that she probably flashed any enquiring eye a good look at her underwear in the process.

“In fact, I seem to remember someone carrying me in their arms too… A lot of girls would get weak at the knees at that kind of treatment by a hero like you, wouldn’t they? I know I sure did~” Attempting to make herself seem buoyant and breezy in order to lift the spirits of the man nearby, though it made her head spin a little bit to do so in her current state, Sofia swayed from side to side with a girlish grin as she spoke to Nilan, hoping to provoke at least a little smile in him as she spoke with a teasing but not entirely insincere tone. This time, however, it did not seem to work.
 
“I’m not a hero… I couldn’t even safe my wife. 
I let her down, just like I let you down today…”

The efforts that Miss Serena made to cheer up the chap nearby only seeming to make his mood worse, with words that sent a shiver through her the inspector suddenly pulled his hand away from her own and buried his face in it, letting out a huff as he leaned on the edge of the bed. The vixen stunned into silence by his statement, all she could do was stare at Nilan as she tried to process the bomb he had dropped on there in his despair, never having even wondered up to this point just why this mix of a refined mind and rugged good looks had not settled down yet…

His… Wife? Reeling from the blow she had been dealt and the combination of it and the lingering exhaustion she felt making her feel more than a little bit faint, as she planted a hand on the bed to steady herself Miss Serena noticed the way she was shaking as she went into shock and pulled her knees up to her chest to hug them, suddenly feeling like she had been dropped in a bathtub crammed to the brim with cubes of ice and unable to throw off the sensation.
He is? He was? This the first time she had dealt with someone she that she knew was a widower, at least in the flirty way she had been up to this point, the fox suddenly felt quite foolish for the friskiness she had shown to this guy. The image of what she had been doing making her feel like a little girl who had been throwing herself at a grown up for their love and attention, the realization made her feel small and silly and not to mention rather embarrassed, which showed in the red colour that rushed to her cheeks.
 
What should I? He’s not… Always acting like the big, bold woman but suddenly stripped of the bravado she usually shone with and finding that she was lost without it, as she felt her eyes stinging and dewy crystals building up in the corners of them, Sofia wanted to cry but she didn’t wholly know why. Was she disappointed that, on some level, Nilan’s heart would never truly belong to her? No, she wasn’t that much of a romantic. Was she angry at herself for acting like a fool? Yeah, there was probably some of it, but the biggest reason was probably because there was someone next to her hurting and she didn’t know what to do.

I could… No, that’s not… By default jumping into jokey behaviour or if the situation seemed appropriate some friskiness, as Miss Serena searched her mind for what she should do next, nothing seemed to be right. Tempted to try and trap his hand to hold again but a little wary of such a gesture given how he dragged his hand away, no matter how much she wanted to lighten the mood with a one liner, nothing seemed to be appropriate given what he had just said. Even feeling like the simple act of throwing her arms around the man and cuddling him into her would provoke some response of repulsion, the girl couldn’t help but feel how her embrace would pale compared to that his wife might have been able to give him. She liked Nilan, sure, but her touch was not one of true love, and right now that felt like nothing.

“I should… There’s work to do. I’m glad that you’re OK Sofia… Goodbye.”
 
The man pulling a pair of eyes that looked rather reddened from his hands and straightening up far more stiffly than Sofia had ever seen him, after a polite excuse to leave her the inspector nodded curtly without daring to really look in her direction and turned around, marching straight toward the door with intent.
No, he’s… I can’t! This decision and deed feeling like they jammed an even bigger piece of ice into the heart of our heroine as she struggled to find something to say to her friend to make him feel better, as the quivering in her body grew even worse the girl clawed at the air to try and hold onto Nilan, only to find him slipping through her hands.
 
“You didn’t!” For some reason sensing that if she let the inspector walk out now then she would lose some part of him forever, though the words she used were impulsive and rather lacking for grace and eloquence, in her desperation the damsel decided to speak from the heart as best that she could.
“You didn’t let me down, Nilan!” Pleading with the disheartened soldier with words that in hindsight would feel a bit childish even if they were honest, Sofia flung herself off the bed to stop her friend from walking out on her, only realizing just how weak her legs felt when they immediately buckled underneath her and sent her spilling toward the ground with a rather girlish squeak…

“S-See?” A date with the clinics tiles on the cards for a moment until a pair of big, strong hands shot underneath her and steadied her body, while Sofia hadn’t exactly planned to draw Nilan back toward her with her little act of clumsiness, she couldn’t deny the effectiveness of her accidental achievement.
“That’s the second time today I’ve needed someone to pick me up, and you were there?” Certainly not planning on wasting the chance she was provided with and the mix of the adrenaline that her near fall had sent into her system and the comfort she felt in the arms of the inspector seeming to make the path clear, the little vixen made no effort to straighten herself or take one ounce of her weight off that of the dark haired knight now that she had him entangled with her.

“I don’t know what went on with your wife… I mean if you want to tell me, you can anytime but no pressure there…” Unsure of exactly what she wanted to say once she got going but having a good feeling about the roll she was on, though she rambled a little the blue beauty did her best to lift the spirits of the man who despite holding onto her still seemed to think his sense of guilt prevented him from looking her in the eye.
“But earlier on I was done for and I needed someone to save me, and who was it that came running?” Lifting her hand gently to his cheek and softly guiding that dark, brooding gaze to meet her own as she spoke earnestly and without regard for any notion of embarrassment, though she could see pain and plain as day in the what stared back at her, Miss Serena did not look away for a single moment.

“It was you, Nilan. You didn’t let me down, you saved me.” Sure it was a bit odd and a little intimidating to be giving a pep talk to a person who usually showed such a magnificent bearing, to the degree that initially the Valerican vixen was sure he might burst out laughing at the absurdity of her honest words at any second, but it also seemed worth expressing despite the risk she imagined.

“And I bet I’m not the only one either? How many of your knights and guardsmen are here because of you?” Never erring or blinking away from those deep and dark eyes for a second as she spoke from the heart, while she felt a little out of her depth offering her own meagre insight to a man who was so much more experienced and perceptive than she was, Sofia did not feel deterred in the slightest.
“How many people in this town are here because of you?” This man having saved her life today and now in need of rescue homself, what would she think of herself if she let him down? What would her mother say to her? Sure, she felt like a bit of a dork for talking like this, especially when she knew that it was unlikely to lead to a nice experience in the nearby bed, but it still seemed wholly worthwhile. Nilan really hadn’t let her down, and now she wouldn’t either.

“Yeah, we ran into a problem today and things got a bit hairy, but it’s not the end of the world…” It not a matter of seducing someone, which felt like a bit of a change for the girl, but rather of saving someone, her words never felt more important or clever than they did in the moment she went through.
“So don’t run away, Nilan. We need you.” Artless and simple but none the less the honesty feeling like they gave the island girl a power that her usual smooth and sensual lyrics did not, even if she had to cling to the inspector and talk all night until he started to forgive himself, she would do. After all, he needed this, and while it wasn’t particularly relevant she also felt pretty comfortable in his grip, being held close by this wounded warrior who needed her just as much as she needed him…
