Upon noticing the man pulling out his weapon, he realized that they had some way of detecting him. He halted from approaching them and stood still with a distance of 30 meters between them. Upon stopping, he shed his illusion and turned into his real shape. A shape without shape held together to form a shape. He was about three meters tall. Both his hands aimed at a target. In this case, both Hatsuharu and Kazimir. Slimy spears were launched from his hands and flew towards the targets.

Akira Shimada

Get down with the victim
We both know you need them

She had paused and her left hand clung to the wand holstered in her robe. She didn't pluck the weapon out for the time being, but intended to use it to communicate with those on her side. Tsuru's verbal warning didn't need explanation, nor did it need any clarification, especially not after the tone he used. If something wasn't human and he didn't have the inclination to declare exactly what it was, an assumption felt very fair.

The fellow Joyan, had already unleashed his blade, but Akira wished for him and Kazi to hold their ground, or better, to back off. It wasn't like she underestimated her opponent, it was just that her protective instinct towards this particular duo of Knights was rather sharp. She relayed the order telepathically. 'Get back.' Her style of fighting could put them at risk of being collateral damage. Given that they'd both fought alongside her and were familiar with the qualities of her offensive capabilities, she could only hope that they understood her sentiment.

This was not the first time she had faced a demon and from the looks of it, this wasn't going to be the last... Unless... She pushed the morbid thought away from her mind as swiftly as it had emerged. Akira didn't hesitate, there was no time to waste and certainly no time to wallow in fear. No, she wasn't going to be the scared one this time.

Her right fist shot up towards the shapeless creature, as it morphed and grew, a magic circle formed in front of it. She unleashed her spell just as the slime balls were hurled, seemingly moving towards her comrades. In that instant, she wondered if demons could tell their opponents' weaknesses. She groaned softly, upon realizing that his attack had forced hers to become a defensive measure. She unfurled her fingers so her invisible spell could expand and potentially meet both the projectiles in their tracks.

Kazimir Seiryu
Kazimir had met Hatsu's eye with a curious look. Something was less human about the knight but he still carried the same wit about him. There was no time to question it as immediately Akira was off.
He nodded at Hatsu, "Right behind you."

There was a fleeting sense of nostalgia being united with the two senior knights despite all of them having gone through changes.

Throwing of his hood and wielding his blade, Hatsu revealed the presence of the enemy along with his own true nature now. A faster result than he had expected, but they all stood facing the demon now. It shed its mortal skin into an amorphous mass. Kazimir could feel the difference in their power. The demon shot forth two spears from its body aimed at him and another knight. Power radiated from them. A strength he had rarely seen before. The wind mage knew he was outclassed. Instinctive fear swept his mind. His heart thumped in his chest, searching for resolve. What truly lied deeper was inadequacy, and a desperate desire to have more power, given the strength of everything and everyone around him. How could he protect anyone against these odds.

He calculated his next move when, Akira stepped in first. He wasn't use to her voice in his head but reacted by bracing himself for her destructive force. She sent an unseen shock wave through the air to intercept the attacks.

Combat section

If Akira's spell negated the magic Kazimir would stand his ground there. If not, he would run to his right, attempting to evade the spear.

With either of those options, his action would be the same. He needed to take advantage of no one around the enemy and made a circle with his arms before thrusting his hand towards the demon. He acted in beat with Akira, hoping the demon would be distracted by the clash of magic.

A white magic seal appears on Kaz's hand and around the demon before a small tornado whirled around the area where the demon stood.

There was one thing the wind mage knew for certain. He couldn't let those attack hit him or that would be the end of it.

Hatsuharu

You’re stuck in the middle
Of all irrelevance

Akira wasted no time after his warning. He heard her voice in his head as she pointed her fist towards the morphing demon. His weapon was at the ready, but he dropped the idea of charging ahead; especially after he felt the presence of her invisible spell and saw the demon shoot two spears towards them.

The three of them were quite far from the demon. It was rare for spells to reach that far from the caster, but Haru had seen a few who could push way past those limits. In fact, his two comrades right there were examples of such few. So, he wasn’t willing to risk it. He swiftly lunged diagonally backwards and to the right by a couple of meters to escape the spear that was heading towards him, unaware that it would follow him.

Haru saw the slight shift in the spear’s trajectory as he lunged and realized the danger. Just then, he felt Akira’s spell grow in size and understood that she was using her spell defensively, to destroy the spears before it reached them. He felt a wave of relief. That spear was no joke. He was certain it would deal devastating damage if it landed.

Realizing the calibre of their opponent, Haru was concerned for Kazimir. He was certain the wind mage had definitely grown a lot stronger over the years, but wasn’t sure if he was ready for something like this yet. Heck, he could say the same thing about himself for that matter. But, if anything were to happen, better to him than Aki or Kazi.

Haru was behind the two—with Aki to his left and Kazi to his right—ready to lunge to either’s defence if required. This Demon looked strong; too strong. As tempting as it was to test his mettle against the abyssal creature, he would rather it be a swift fight. And his best chance at that would be to let the mages do their thing and not interfere. Him entering a melee fight would only be a hindrance to the two casters; not to mention, the opponent slung spells with non-linear trajectories. So, he hung back in a defensive position, waiting for an opportunity.

The spears were negated somehow, but the demon wasn't willing to give up that easily. The moment he got hit by the tornado, he turned into liquid and let himself get swooped up by the tornado till it stopped. As the tornado stopped, the demon could be seen in the sky in his usual form again. It was about twenty meters up, and now about twenty meters away from the band of heroes. The demon's shape changed once again and turned into a ball which kept on expanding till it reached a width of ten diameters. Quickly, the demon began to rotate in his ball form, while still hovering briefly in the sky, after which he launched himself towards the three. The moment he would hit the ground, a huge shockwave would expand from the impact as secondary damage, and the demon would return to his usual shape again. However, this time his mode had changed and he would battle the mages from nearby without getting harmed by their spells again.

Tsuru, who was more of a close-range fighter followed her recommendation and fell back, enough to put himself reliably out of danger for the moment. It was an extra measure, given that she managed to deal with the incoming attacks swiftly enough. Of course, he still lingered to provide aid in whatever manner he could. Kazimir instead, held his ground after making sure that the slime missiles were dealt with. Foolhardy as always. Akira worried for them more than for herself, but she couldn't let anxiety cloud her judgement.

The Sinese seized the opportunity to sling his whirling tornado at the demon. It served as a reminder, for her to play her part in taking down the wretched creature. The way the spell affected the demon was different in comparison to the people who were its victims when she had first witnessed it. The swept up demon lingered in the air, closer to them than before, but not close enough for her or her allies to be in the blast zone of her strongest spell. Armed with that knowledge, she chose to unleash it tactically. Her right hand clenched into a fist again and she pointed it towards the area about four meters under the demon. A magic circle formed and the spell was directed there. As he stretched and billowed, she extended her fingers to open her palm, causing the invisible shock-wave to expand when it was between him and the ground.

She wasn't entirely sure what happened, but the demon didn't rise further upon the alleged impact of the spell. Slightly flustered, her left hand slipped away from the wand and lingered above the amulet on her chest. Her right hand now rose, her fingers aiming at the demon, as he began rotating. She shot a beam of invisible energy this time, hoping to push him backwards so the three Knights could keep their distance. Alas, it would seem that her spells weren't effective in hindering or altering his motions.

The moment she noticed that gooey ball hurling towards the trio unimpeded, out of desperation, she tapped her amulet, hoping at least this would negate the unrelenting assault. She didn't want the other two here. But she knew nothing she could say would successfully drive Tsuru away, it'd be a waste of breath to attempt it. 'Kazi, we'll hold him off! Get out of here!' she exclaimed, verbally this time. He was a valiant man and a loyal Knight, but also the most vulnerable among them. She knew he didn't have the right equipment to sustain such a battle like she and Tsuru did. Regardless, it was probably too late for him to follow her order.

Kazimir Seiryu
Kazimir narrowed his eye in anticipation as the blob like demon flew with his attack and began whirling in mid-air. Whatever happened next had the wind mage anxious as this was already a far stronger opponent than he had ever faced, and he felt the woeful gaps in his ability even with the diving blessing.

The fleshy flowing creature formed a ball and rapidly flung its mass towards them. Its slightly liquid like body rippled against the wind yet none was stripped away. Kazimir took a deep breath feeling that same urge building up within him from when he sparred Tsuru and the angel. He struggle to keep it at bay with another small breath almost not perceptible.

As the ball rocketed forward it was Aki again that stood in the way as Tsuru hung back ready to pounce on any opening the demon gave. His fellow sorcerer seemed to unleash a series of spells with her hand gestures, but nothing slowed the impending assault.

He knew things were serious as Aki urged him to leave the battlefield. Instead wind built up around him as he prepared for more spells, "Sorry, it's to windy, I can't hear you," he replied with words that were joking but his tone was calm and resolute as he starred at their foe.

The wind mage knew Tsuru was ready and if it was coming this close it was his time to shine. Stepping his foot on the groun a white magic circle appeared and a gust of wind sent Kaz into the air diagonally backwards, 10 meters, going well over Tsuru's head. He hoped he could evade the wide blobs attack.

As he was midway through his aerial dash the blob hit the ground with a splat and reformed its body. A strange. Kaz was a bit surprised at the lack luster attack but it is often the simplest motions that are the most deadly.

The blob reformed as the wind mage was still in the air. If he could do anything it was give Tsuru an assist at least. Kaz swund his staff at a arc sending a blade of wind diagonally downward at the demons head. The spell collided with the Demon but the being stood unphased. Something he was not entirely surprised by given its reaction to Akira's far more powerful magic but hopefully it would serve as a distraction for their sword wielding ally.

Hatsuharu

Get out of the middle
And rise to the top now

Haru watched keenly as Kazimir’s spell hit the demon. The shapeless monster was swooped by the tornado. However, he couldn’t be sure if there was any significant damage done because the moment the wind mage’s spell ended, the abyssal creature was no longer on the ground, but up in the air—closer to them than before. Akira reacted quickly; he could feel the large invisible shockwave shoot out of her fist as the demon hovered above and ballooned.

There was a fraction of a second when he lost track of the spell, but the moment the crash mage opened her palm and the shockwave expanded, he could feel it again. He knew very well that Akira wouldn’t harm her fellow Knights. So, even though one side of the shockwave was expanding towards them, he was certain that she would have made sure it never reached them. He held his ground and watched. As he expected, the shockwave stopped well short of the trio.

Unfortunately, however, the now spinning demon seemed unperturbed as well. He knew that Akira’s spells had a powerful knockback upon hit. So, either the spell never hit the demon, or it had a trick up its sleeve that he couldn’t fathom. Haru watched as Akira slung another spell at the demon. This one was directed straight at it and he doubted she missed. Yet, the demon remained unimpeded; in fact, worse than unimpeded. It shot towards them in that humungous form, spinning.

Haru knew there was a high chance they were all goners if it landed right on top of them. He attempted to tap into his magic, but he knew it was a futile attempt; there was no response. He was still far from using it at will. Just when he was about to think there was no way to stop this onslaught, he felt a mana pulse emanating from Akira. He knew what it was. It was he who gave that amulet to her. And if it worked as it meant to, that should stop the demon ball shooting towards them.

Irrespective, he couldn’t agree more with Akira’s warning towards Kazimir. However, he also knew that the wind mage wouldn’t back down. If the demon landed after its spell being cancelled, Haru would spot his opportunity. Just after Kazimir dashed over him and slung a spell at the monster, the sword-wielding Knight would dash ahead. If Kazimir’s spell made contact, Haru wouldn’t miss the fact that it didn’t affect the demon at all. He was no stranger to immunities; his cloak boasted such capabilities. However, witnessing it not move an inch from Akira’s spells was unnerving.

Of course, these things weren’t going to make Haru hesitate. He had already charged; already committed to attack. Not until was he in melee range would he realize how tall the demon was. It had no recognizable features; just an amalgamation of large gooey masses. He couldn’t rely on combat techniques that he learned to fight humanoid beings. That made his choice easier; he focused on raw power.

Haru didn’t stop his dash when he got close. Instead, he used that momentum to add more power to the punch as he balled his left hand into a fist and drove it straight into the middle of the large mass. He hoped his attack, if it landed, would stagger the demon and make room for a follow up. If that was the case, he would immediately follow it up with a slash from his horizontal slash at the demon, aimed at its lower body. In case his sabre strike lands, he would immediately notice that his magical sword dealt no damage to the demon and finally understood the monster’s trick.

Before the demon crashed down, he got hit by a few spells. It didn't stop his motion, but still resulted into damage. Upon landing, the spell of one of the mages was nulled due to change in his mode. The blast did not send everyone away. Someone interfered with it. The demon was surprised that they were not all relying on magic to battle. When one of them came slashing at him, he realized it was over. Multiple cuts across his body caused him to succumb to the wounds of combat. It was now up to Ragged Banner to complete it without his help. Impatience was probably cowering away somewhere. It was over for Shapeless though. But, before he slipped away, he could feel that it was almost ready. Glory to the Abyss, for he did not fail his Lord. Overwhelmers would be here soon and bring death upon them.

Akira Shimada

When you’ve made it
Won’t ya tell me what to do
'Cause I’m playin' it all wrong

She wasn't certain of exactly what crisis her amulet had prevented, but she knew one had been averted. From what she could deduce from the interrupted trajectory he intended to land on the three Knights and just not being squashed under his slime-like body was reward enough.

The Shimada had nothing more up her sleeve though and the demon was closer, much closer than she usually allowed her enemies to be. Despite the lack of her offensive spell's effectiveness, Kazi too directed more of his wind at the monster. When he joked about not being able to hear her, she was tempted to employ her wand yet again and yell some sense into his mind. She didn't, simply because she was quick to realize the fruitlessness of it. He was a lost cause, much like her partner.

However, luckily for them, his attacks had served a purpose more important than merely hindering the demon. Kazi's attempts had made it explicitly obvious that the demon was no longer susceptible to his wind. Which meant, when Tsuru decided to exploit the window of opportunity, he knew better than to use his weapon.

She felt her heart rise to her throat as Kazi and Tsuru performed what seemed to be an instinctual dance, it flowed as seamlessly in the face of danger as it would have in a friendly sparring. When these two male Knights had exchanged such adamant ferocity and explored such grit within them, she didn't know. But they each wore looks of tempered courage, one that she couldn't erase with her concerned words.

Everything seemed to have slowed down, her widened eyes remained riveted onto Tsuru as he flew towards the monster. Stealing a moment to scan him for the first time since she saw him swoop towards Nerva, she realized exactly how he had changed. There was a story there and she wished to find a chance to learn it, despite whatever was going to become of today. She found herself wincing as he got closer to the giant goo... to simply land a sucker punch.

And he fell. The demon, that is.

Tsuru hacked and slashed at it with his sword, for good measure, probably to ensure he was truly gone. Made sense to not take chances. Her annoyance at Kazi's disobedience and the innate fear for their lives, dissolved into relief. The long draw of air that she found herself holding as breath, slowly found freedom in the form of an inaudible sigh and then she chuckled mirthlessly, it was a joyless victory. It was yet another lifeless demon and she knew he was likely to be replaced, because there were always more.

For the moment though, they'd earned their peace. She took a moment to survey the damage they'd dealt to the surrounding structures and chewed on her lower lip, sheepishly. It was significant, and for the most part she was to blame for it. It was mostly structures, the townsfolk had already abandoned the area when they heard of the threat. Still... she could only hope she was not the reason someone became collateral damage today. 'One down, two to go then... We best keep moving.' she declared, with her usual impassiveness.

Kazimir Seiryu
Kazimir dropped to the ground, landing on his feet as Haru rushed forward delivering a series of blows to the demon. His only reserve of magic now were spells he doubted would even come close to phasing the monster even if it wasn't already shrugging them off with ease. He readied himself to dodge out of the way from any deadly counter attack the demon had. his staff gripped tightly as he was already committed to face down the enemy to whatever ends it meant.

He couldn't fathom the mettle it would take to risk driving his hand into the heart of the amorphous demon. Just as the panic of the battle had begun the demon was immobile and the threat was already vanquished. To devastating attacks dispatched by Akira's invisible explosions of magic and Haru's immense physical strength.

He looked back at the two whom he now stood behind. His senior knights leading the way, but for this encounter perhaps it was the brief training sessions he had shared with the two but they seemed to have an unspoken understanding of their styles and actions. Kazimir could see why those two made such a strong team. A dangerous combination of melee and magic. He couldn't help but get lost in thought at what battle tactics that could pull off.

A calm look adorned his face but if any could peer into his soul they would see the sense of relief and comfort at having those two at his side. Along with that was a deeper stirring of something tugging him away. Something lurking at the edges of his mind thrashing about. He knew what it was and held a fragile moment of solace that he was able to hold it back...this time.

Haru delivered a final slash at the demon and the wind mage waited for a cold stare from Akira for his comments during the scuffle. To his surprise there was known. Perhaps she accepted that it wouldn't change him. Instead she just glanced over the battlefield before spurring them to move on. It was back to business as usual.

Kazimir looked back at Haru standing over the demon with his sword. His mind replaced the demon with the mind manipulating leader they had stopped before and the dangerous look in Haru's eye. although it was not shame or judgement in his mind but the lingering question, if I was in that position...would he have taken the man's life instead of stopping.

The question left him and responded to Aki, "Looks like we may be able to save this village."

You can’t fight the friction
So ease it off

There was fear, which induced the fight of flight reaction. Flight wasn’t an option. He had hung back when the demon was still far from the party. But now that the monster had closed the distance, there was no way he was going to let either Akira or Kazimir to be the frontline.

Thankfully, the amulet seemed to work. The demon wasn’t in its humungous ballooned form when it landed. Haru’s hand made solid contact with the demon and he could feel the creature go limp. He didn’t need to slash with his sword, but he did it anyway. Besides, he truly didn’t expect the demon to be defeated with just one punch from him. In fact, he was almost certain that wasn’t the case. It could only mean that Akira’s spells did hit the demon; just didn’t knock him back.

The fight was over and none of them had taken any significant damage. He could see why. Looking around, several buildings in the vicinity had turned into nothing but rubble. His focus on the incoming demon had blinded him to the destruction that Akira’s spells had caused in the area. He turned to look at her. For the first time, he realized how monstrously powerful she was…

And not moments ago, she had spoken in favour of Nerva.

He gulped.

He told himself she would never do anything to harm innocents, but the sheer number of times he had to repeat that in his head recently had made him begin to wonder.

After a short sigh, Haru deactivated his blade and turned to Kazimir. He smirked and shook his head in amazement. The courage the wind mage had shown today, despite knowing that he could lose his life if he made the slightest error, was beyond admirable. And even after that close brush with such a dangerous demon, he remained focused at the task; his thoughts were still about the people of the village under threat. A Rune Knight through and through.

Before they moved on, Haru gave Kazimir a nod; one of many meanings. The single nod conveyed his approval, appreciation, gratitude, and admiration, for he earned them all.
