This job was easy. All Zane had to was make sure all of the beacons on a nearby hill were assembled correctly. He knew there would be some other guards working on them, but as all guards stereo typically did, there was a chance they would simply slack off on the job. Zane couldn't blame them. If he wasn't so full of energy at the current moment, he'd want to slack off too.
Arriving at the first beacon, Zane saw a guard putting the last pieces in place. He was admittedly being a bit slow... a little push could be useful here. As Zane walked past towards the next beacon, he called to the guard while walking off. "Better hurry up, Servas is scary when he's mad!" Zane honestly did not know if that was true or not, though in his mind the lord did look like a man who could be quite fearsome with a temper. Now that he thought about, Zane didn't wanna get on his bad side either... not that his charming self could ever get on anyone's bad side, that was.
Moving through the woods of the nearby hills, Zane noticed the second beacon. It had been completely finished - a magnificent sight to see. The guard at the post was sleeping, but Zane sympathized with the man. The man had worked hard on the beacon, so Zane saw no reason to wake him up for the time being.
That just lead to the final beacon. Upon arriving, Zane noticed that the beacon was close to being done, though still missing a bit work. There was something weird about this one, though. No guard in sight. No sign of life. Investigating the area, Zane found a trail of blood leading down a hill. Shocked at the sight, Zane moved closer to find a dead body. The guard had been hit with a blunt wound right into his skull. Zane was no medical professional, but he was fairly certain the guard in front of him was 100% dead. "What in the.."
Hurrying back to the castle gate, Zane reported his findings to the guard at the gate. "I'm going to send men to check in right away. It's unfortunate about what happened... all the guards here are good men. I don't think any of them would deserve such a fate." Sighing, the guard shook his head. "Sorry. Here's your pay. Thank you for telling me everything - I'll make sure to report this to the lord."
Nodding, Zane gave his farewells to the guard, leaving the castle to head back into town. The poor guard... there was no way he could've expected that. It made Zane wonder if his death was something that would come from surprise as well.
