But...enough with that, I'm starving. All that traveling has reduced my funds quite a bit. There has to be some sort of request board around here somewhere. Even though this place was peaceful there was still a need for mages especially with their beloved Penumbral Guard around to protect them, maybe there won't be any work for me.
Lucian strolled through the town to the nearby Tavern in the center of town. The large building was grandiose to say to the least but that was another matter for another time. Especially with one not as grave as his stomach. Walking inside a number of mages crowded around the board, the new request must have been put up only a while ago. Strolling forward, Lucian walked directly to the front of the board, pushing past the straggling mages who were aimlessly musing through the request.
Some things never change. Scrolling through the request with relative speed, Lucian eyes fell upon the call for help from a farmer. Though at a quick glance one would've assumed it was a call for help with some farm work, there was oh so much more.
Ripping the sheet from the board, Lucian walked out of the tavern and towards the farmlands. Coming over a certain hill and down the golden road, Lucian came upon a set of farmland, a large red house sat in the corner just like the request said that it would be. Walking down Lucian saw a man tapping his head as he tried to assess his situation. The farmland seemed to be green and lush though there was a surprisingly large amount of vines that littered the area. They seemed to pulse as if they were alive.
"I heard you were having a little weed problem."
The farmer shook his hand viciously, his face a plethora of emotions.
"It's no little weed problem, but thank goodness you're here. So I don't know if you paid attention to the request but these vines have come from literally outta nowhere. They have literally devoured every mage that I have requested to come out here."
"Devoured?"
"None of them return. Please. My family requires this. We will starve literally. Please remove this pest from my farmland please."
Groaning Lucian, looked into the maw of the hungry green beast. The various vines truly seemed more alive than they had been a few mere moments ago. Trudging forward, Lucian stomped into the thicket, the outside world disappearing into a wall of green.
The various vines of the forest seemed to twitch and move as if nerves reacting to a new set of stimuli. They seemed to flick and move as if they were testing to see if he was truly there or not. The ground was blanketed in the remains of the farmer's former crops, the vines stretching across the makeshift path.
Lucian continued to trudge through, the wall of vines becoming increasingly thick as he continued forward and then he felt it. It was all he could do to dodge the incoming attack. The vine seemed to snatch at the empty like it was trying to...grab him!
Lucian jumped out of the way of another attack, the hungry maw of the thrashing vine pathway was alive with the active vines, now each one a tendril of danger as they all sought to attack him. The swung with instinct and raw aggression, there was no coordination in their attack but it was clear they were locked on to him and going back was not an option as the vines pushed forward closing off any retreat through the way he originally came.
"Damn my lack of a weapon."
Running forward, Lucian could feel the wall was slowly closing in and becoming increasingly more closed off. There was nothing else to do but go forward what better way to go forward than to burst straight through the thick of it all.
Lucian stopped moving for a second, gathering the mana into his self and grasping hold of it Lucian molded the energy into himself. The ball of energy rose through his chest into his head, opening his mouth, Lucian released a beam of pure energy through the vines. A large hole appeared in the collective mass of foliage, the thrashing vines seemed to react like a singular beast that was harmed, the rampage growing increasingly violent. But before Lucian could admire his hard work, the hole was slowly becoming covered by vines as the mass of plants worked to repair the damage that had been wrought by his beam attack. Taking his chance, Lucian ran forward, diving forward through it to land on the other side. Slowly the wall of vines grew back behind him. Having the momentary opportunity to breathe, Lucian saw he was in a large chamber like a cacoon of sorts. The surrounding vines here were non-responsive to his presence, they seemed to be much stronger and thicker here as if to protect... something.
Lucian saw the blue orb held on a makeshift pedestal of vines in the center of the "room" it seemed to pulse with an unnatural glow. The source of this problem. Like a cold heartbeat, the pulse came continuously. Walking forward, Lucian came upon the orb, the mass around him shuddering but unable to attack. Taking the chance, Lucian punched with all his might at the crystalline orb, the fragile thing shattering into a multitude of pieces. The mass of vines seemed to writhe in distress as they slowly began and then quickly began to die. The individual branches became mere shadows of their former selves nothing remained but the farmland that was once here. Walking out of the farmland, Lucian stopped the farmer, the lack of vines in his land was all he needed to see. Taking out his purse, the farmer handed Lucian a bag of jewels and gleefully went to gather his family. Taking his payment, Lucian left the area, eager to get something to eat, but nothing with vegetables.
