Kenzo woke up early in the morning. During the past afternoon, he had traveled on foot from Oak City to Baska. The blue haired mercenary had received permission from his guild master to leave the port on official guild business. He had traveled alongside Finn and Vali around a month ago to attend an important meeting with the Phoenix Feather guild master and coincidentally, his friend Kazimir. The two guilds were the powerful actors of the region and considering the current state of political affairs in the country, Advent World and Phoenix Feather would undoubtedly wrestle control over the westernmost part of the country. However, it would also seem that the talks took longer than expected, and Kenzo was getting stalled at the city for longer than what he thought at first. Furthermore, time was of essence. There were still unattended business going on at Oak that he needed to finish before it was too long. Even more important, was the matter of Baska itself. Advent World had finally finished taking control over Oak, and Phoenix Feather had done the same with Port Astera. It was just a matter of time before a race to get control over Baska was in place. Sure, Kenzo didn’t want to fight against any of them in the first place, but he would if needed. Unless the talks between Finn and Kazimir produced some results soon and an agreement was made, Baska was still up for the taking.

As such, Kenzo had been assigned to a mission with Noel once again. It had been a while since the two of them worked together, fishing some giant sea monsters near the coasts of Astera, so this was a good opportunity to spend some time with his pal once again. For now, though, Kenzo needed information.

Furthermore, what better place to gather information than the heart of Baska? For some, that might be the city center. However, Kenzo made use of the time he had spent some months before in the city to know better. Even if the city center where the daily market took place was definitely a spot where most of the people gathered, the blue haired mercenary had learned that if he wanted to garner the support of the population, it had to be at another place. For years, the city had simply been a spot where thousands of rune knights, mercenaries and bounty hunters gathered without a care in the world. Now that the Rune Knights had been disbanded, the spot had lost mostly all semblance of order and authority. Power and strength had become the bread and butter of the people living in Baska. Only those standing at the top could even dare to claim ownership over its citizens. For years, the city had held tournaments almost daily at the place where most people converged. The great Baska Rock was by far the most characteristic landmark of the place. Thousands of fights took place at the top of the gigantic meteorite.

It was said in the streets that the reason it had become such a popular spot for hosting fights was due to the properties of the soil. A huge meteorite, that supposedly was the responsible for killing the ancient beasts known as dinosaurs had crashed right in the middle of where Baska would one day be founded. The rock had survived for millennia, and its alien origins gave it powers that were unfound in Earthland. There was something in the rock’s composition that had turned the great Baska rock into an indestructible thing. No matter the attack, it never scratched.

Kenzo wondered if that was the same material with which his own sword had been forged. He had used it a couple of times by now, so he knew the extents of its power. However, he was yet to find a single opponent that was able to even as much nick or chip the blade. It was truly a terrifying weapon to fight against. In most scenarios, the difference was so great that it amounted to what fighting someone with a steel sword while you held a wooden sword felt like. Either way, Kenzo was not dissatisfied by this in any manner. He had heard great deeds about the women of Daeva Eye and how powerful they were. A particular name in specific caught his attention. Venus Rose, or the Burning Rose as she was better known was famous for holding a sword said to have been forged by the heavens. Kenzo simply smirked after hearing this comment. From that moment onward, he started itching to fight her and cross swords. He wanted to see which set of gods was the better weaponsmith.

Either way, Kenzo went on to get information for the day. After a short stroll, he finally arrived near the great rock. The closer he walked towards the place, the livelier it got. It was truly magnificent. Scores of workers and people all rushed through the narrow streets surrounding the place as they ran up and down carrying stuff. Some of them carried large wooden planks while others ran around with baskets full of weaved clothes. Merchants ran and barked as they commanded their caravans to hurry up in order to find a good spot while street performers juggled with fire or made magic tricks for the hectic crowd. Kenzo had seen this before. ”A festival, huh?”

”You have quite the good eye mister. That’s right. The Great Spring Tournament is about to begin! Coincidentally, every time one of the four great tournaments takes place in Baska a huge festival is thrown. Since we’re in spring, the festival this time around is the Bloom Festival. Quite a tacky name heh? I know I know… But, what can you do? The women and children seem to like the name, so it has stuck forever” Kenzo turned around to find a man short in stature stand next to him as he supported himself with a crane. It was an old white-haired man, sporting quite a peculiar mustache. Kenzo found it interesting the way he seemed to talk to himself but was nonetheless grateful that he had spared him having to ask all of the information he needed question by question. ”Well, that was convenient old man” Kenzo said as he crossed his arms and turned his head for a second before looking at the bustling city in front of them. ”So, when are the fights starting then?” He asked with a serious voice.

”Well, the main event is still around a pair of days short, but there is actually a pre-season tournament that is about to start.” The old man took a pause as he looked to his right, analyzing the large scabbard the blue haired warrior carried with him. ”From the looks of this beauty, I’d say you should give it a shot. The prize this time around is quite juicy if I do say myself.” Kenzo simply smirked at the old man’s words. ”Guess I could use some fighting to stretch out a bit after all… Haha” Kenzo’s mood visibly changed as he uncrossed both arms and cracked his knuckles. ”What’s the prize?” He asked.

”A Dhuilin”

”REMEMBER!!! TRY NOT TO KILL ANYBODY!” screamed the old man as he waved his hand towards the mercenary. Raising his right hand as his left rested on Masamune’s hilt, the male answered with a smile. ”I’ll do my best old man!”

Kenzo had joined the tournament without a second thought. He had never heard about Dhuilin in his life, but after following the old man closer to the arena, he could instantly see why many people were excited for the pre-seasonal tourney. A magnificent beast, unlike anything the blue haired man had seen before. It was horse-like in appearance, but the set of horns and colors of his hair made it clear that it was far from being a normal one. Apparently, Dhuilin were a rare breed of horses endemic to Fiore. The high concentrations of ethernano in some parts of the country had made their way into the evolutionary stage of some wild beasts. From what he heard, a Dhuilin would never get tired no matter how far he ran and once it accepted its master it would spend its rest of its life with him. All in all, it was quite the sweet deal to let pass. Furthermore, it seemed that the old man had made a bet against a pal of his. As long as Kenzo could beat the current champion, he would even get a jewel reward as compensation. ”Count me in” were the words he said before going off to sign up.

The fights started soon after. As it was to be expected, tons of mercenaries and ex rune knights had decided to participate this time. However, it was too bad for them. The fight format was an all for one brawl. Unluckily for them, Kenzo had set his sights on that suit Dhuilin reward. Before long, he was the last man standing. The male didn’t even need to unsheathe his sword, instead bashing them all in the head with the scabbard. Baska was proving to be quite interesting.
