This was definitely a new low. "So this here's the field needin tillin." Ko stood alongside the stout 'Farmer Jim' as he gestured towards a large plot of land overgrown by weeds. Calling it a 'field' was probably way too generous. It looked like the farmer hadn't done any work with this field in ages. In fact, if it weren't for the fence surrounding its borders, Ko wouldn't be able to tell where the field ended and the rest of the land began. "You want me to till this entire field?" Even Ko, who prided himself on keeping his emotions concealed, couldn't hide the incredulous tone in his voice. "That's what I said, innit?" Farmer Jim was entirely unapologetic. "S'what yer gettin paid fer anyhow. Go get tah work or ya won't finish before tonight." With that, Jim slapped a ho into Ko's hands before turning around and walking away without a backward glance. Clenching his teeth to avoid running his mouth off at the Farmer, Ko looked out over the field with a deep frown. He clamped down on his frustration, and forced himself to get to work. There was no point in getting angry over the details of the job. He needed the money, and this was the job he'd taken. Even if his ho sank into the dirt a little deeper and with more fury than necessary, it still just ended up with a tilled field. So he worked. And worked. Ko lifted his ho and brought it down, and lifted it, and brought it down. Over and over and over. The monotonous work made time seem like it had slowed to a crawl, the sun beating down overhead without mercy. By the time he was only a quarter way through the field he'd removed his shirt and armor, his upper body soaked with sweat. Throughout the entire ordeal, his frustration was like a seething beast, simmering just below the point he would lose control. 332/300 |

Suddenly, as he brought his ho down in a new spot, a chorus of frightened squealing rang out, and a flood of brown erupted from the new hole Ko had just gouged in the ground. He bared his teeth in a disgusted grimace, realizing they were rats. The whole field must be infested with them. Unable to contain his frustrations anymore, Ko swung with his ho in great arcs, the metal spade slicing through the fleeing rodent bodies.
"Filthy vermin!" The majority of the rodents had already disappeared into the weeds covering the rest of the field, and the sight caused Ko's frustration to surge forth even more furiously. Reaching out his free hand, a magic seal appeared at his palm, gathering magic before firing it in a condensed ball into the center of the field.
Black and violet light erupted in an explosion as it struck, obliterating the vegetation and murdering any hiding vermin as well. Still, through the cleared area Ko could still see rodents scurrying to safety. He couldn't allow that. More blasts of his magic flew forth in rapid succession, digging furrows in the earth and sending rodent corpses flying in various states of disassembly.
By the time his mana had run dry and he was exhausted, the field was pockmarked with meter-wide barren craters. It didn't even take Ko another hour to straighten the field up and make it look like he'd done most of it by hand. He wasn't sure whether or not the darkness magic he'd poured into the soil would be good for any plants Jim tried to grow, but then again he didn't care all that much.
At the very least, he got to enjoy the satisfaction of Jim's shocked face when he returned for his reward before the sun had even begun to set. That'll teach the old farmer to doubt a mage.
