Ko was starting to think he might actually secretly be on the Marigold Theater payroll at this point, because it seemed like every time they put on a big production he ended up getting involved somehow. He didn't really mind per se, but the recognize-ability he was getting from it didn't exactly mesh with his usual demeanor. People who saw him on the street and recognized him often felt like they should just go up and approach him, and Ko didn't feel at all conflicted about sending them running when they did. It didn't help that he was getting a lot more 'female' attention because of it. If this had all happened a few weeks previously it would have been welcomed, honestly. Unfortunately, he happened to be dating a Werewolf at the moment, and that meant getting friendly with other women was a big mistake. Rinni had been learning to use her nose rather well recently, and he wasn't interested in seeing her get actually mad at him for something like that. Regardless, the time came again for another big production. This time around they weren't even going to pretend not to be putting Ko in an important role; in fact, he was practically the main villain, although not in the typical sense. The play was supposed to be about a young girl struggling to come to terms with her mother's death and her father's remarriage. They move into a new home, only to discover that the house is haunted by the deceased previous tenants, who have been learning how to scare away new owners from a wandering demon that had found them in passing. The only payment he'd required was that they manipulate the living they scare into saying his name three times, thus unleashing him into the mortal realm. They wanted Ko to play the Demon, naturally, partly thanks to his suite of darkness magic that would help sell the part. Ko agreed reluctantly. At least it was up his alley this time. 336/300 |

Ko had to admit, this was probably the most impressive production the Theater had put up to date. It wasn't just the complexity of the sets and the lighting and music, it was the new techniques they were teaching to the cast. Many of them were simple actors, but the Staff were being taught very simple magicians tricks and the secrets of Prestidigitation in order to make their performances seem more otherworldly and believable. Obviously, they all paled in comparison to his own actual magic, but that was to be expected. He was playing an actual Demon, after all. There was a slight snag when Ko was given the script and he discovered that towards the end of the play he would trick the young girl into marrying him in order to save the two spirits haunting the house. It wasn't so much a snag as it was Ko not being sure he wanted to play yet another part with a romantic element to it, but it was explained that romance played no part in the play at all. Though there were some insinuations that the Demon had some empathy, he was still a chaotic force that only wanted to be allowed to interact with the mortal world. Ko had to hide his amusement when he discovered that Alice wouldn't be playing the main role this time around. Unfortunately for her she was just too old to play the role of the young girl, and she was eventually placed as the step mother due to her singing parts. It was ultimately Rebecca who secured the part of the young girl, and thankfully she was at least as professional as Alice was. They worked together flawlessly, and Ko found her easy to work with as well during rehearsals. She seemed to take a bit too much joy in teasing him by slipping a bit too much flirtatious energy into her performance, however. Ko made sure to try and get her back for it as often as possible. 336/300 |

The day of the production came and the seats were packed tight. Patrons of all ages came to see this latest show, and judging by their faces at the end of the opening number, they were getting their money's worth. The irreverent stance the show took regarding the nature of death and the afterlife was probably a touchy subject for some of them, but the Producer wouldn't let them hold back anything. Luckily for Ko, as the invisible Demon at the center of the entire show, he also took on the role of unseen narrator for many events, and he took great joy in throwing the inevitable death of everyone in the audience right at them. He broke the fourth wall quite a few times, even once straight telling the audience that if someone dropped dead during the performance, they would just keep playing. He played the part of mischievous Demon perfectly. Rebecca also showed her true acting strength, putting on a very convincing rendition of a teenager full of angst and depression at the death of her Mother, and Ko was actually rather moved by her singing numbers. She was the perfect foil to his irreverent antics, right up until their first meeting in the play, where she promptly outsmarts him and refuses to say his name despite being the only living human who can see him. The rest of the show is a back and forth between them, going from suspicion to reliance to fear and then to desperation. During the final scene, when their marriage is about to be consummated, the Demon is finally outsmarted once and for all by the souls haunting the house, who broke rules to bring another greater demon into the home to chase Ko's character away and send him back to the Netherworld. It was, all in all, a fantastic production that got another standing ovation at the end. And to top it all off, the cherry atop the sundae, was that Ko had been in full make-up the entire time. No way a rabid fan would recognize him through so much white paint. 352/300 1024/1000 |
