The lanterns reflected in the mage's eyes. Faint voices trailed around corners and swaying out into the narrow streets. Perfumes trailed behind some. Others through thier arms around allies breathing saki coated breath into the air with jovial exuberance.

Women strolled with painted faces and fans held alluring to their faces. Giggle hidden behind cherry blossom emblazoned ornaments.

A skillet shifted over an open flame. karaga bounced within the metal confines lathered in oil. Steam trailed up the building, saturating the woodwork and Kaz took in a breath through his nose, pulling the steam closer.

He sat on the second floor veranda with a bento box of sushi beside him. Piece by piece he pinched the roll of rice between the two sticks. The sides of the buidling glowed with the lantern light pouring in softly. His mind lingered on the tragedy he was told earlier. The devastation that had happened to the guild.

A dragon brought down its fury on his home. And now he sat with no way to get there until tomorrow came. His chopsticks pinched the piece of sushi but only one piece had been eaten from the box. The glass of water refilled only once. Instead he gazed out at the people, with faint memories of his time growing up. The same smells here as had been around his Joyan born clan. The many meals of fried meat and dumplings.

"Is there anything else you need?" The waitress stood beside the table with a tray balanced on one hand.

"Oh. No I'm fine. Thank you." He replied with a smile and finally popped the piece of sushi in his mouth. The waitress nodded and left the table in silence as Kaz placed the chopsticks parralell to the bento box. His energy consumed in pressing down the turbulence within him that hungered to track down the dragon that brought mayhem to his sanctuary. His only solace rested in that all the members were on assignment outside the guildhall.

Over the last couple of years, Adriana became known as a famous Guildmaster and an infamous boozehound. It was, therefore, no surprise that she would attend a bar while visiting Hosenka. Everything here reminded her of her time abroad in Joya.

While there were many bars and restaurants present in the Cabaret Crescents, she was searching for something in particular. Someone, to be more specific. The smells of the takoyaki, sushi, and sweets being prepared by the vendors filled the streets she was strolling through. She almost caved in and got distracted when walking past one of them, but she quickly reminded herself that she was here for business. Business that required her to follow the scent of sake instead. And in Hosenka, there were many places that served liquor and traditional cuisine. So with some patience, she would be able to drink and eat soon.

As she kept on walking through the streets, she still couldn't spot the person she was searching for in Hosenka. The streets were crowded and made it difficult to spot him. Though, she was absolutely sure that he was somewhere around here. Suddenly, her stomach started to growl. Enough was enough. "Godzilla!" Adriana screamed loudly as she pointed towards the sky in the distance. Everyone stopped walking for a second to find out what the hell was going on. At that moment, she quickly used the ruse to maneuver herself through the crowd and get to the nearest diner before they all continued walking again.

Fortunately, it was a success. This was the place. She looked around but still couldn't find him though. Then she looked upwards and realized that there was a second floor as well. With a loud sigh, mainly reflecting her disappointment towards herself, she leaped into the air and landed on the ledge of the second floor's veranda. All the walking while being hungry and in need of a drink had finally paid off. At last, she had found the boy. She plonked herself in the seat in front of the boy and slammed her hands down on the table out of excitement causing the dishes to tremble. "Hey, little Kaz!"

Kaz was brought the piece of sushi up towards his mouth. A loud scream from below caused his hands to loosen and the small piece of sushi fell through the chopsticks and hit the plate. he quickly looked over the side only to see that everyone was still and looking towards one lady. But nothing followed. With a shrug, he went back to his meal.

With another piece down he began to go for the third. Suddenly a woman appeared on the railing of the veranda. The distance she jumped showed she was no ordinary person. "Uh," he began to address the random stunt when the woman leaped into the chair opposite of him.

He saw her hands crashing down and before they hit, he lifted his drink. The remaining dishes rattled against the table. "Little Kaz?" he questioned the woman's statement and enthusiasm. She seemed familiar in a way and carried herself with a stature of importance.

"I'm not sure if we know each other or not. But you're welcome to join me. Did you need something," he asked, assuming it was work-related and waved for the waitress to come by. He pushed his solemn thoughts of his guild away as best he could. Despite her sudden appearance, he couldn't shake a feeling of something nagging at the back of his mind. Something that seemed so familiar, and ever present.

"Little Kaz, indeed. I mean just because you've become taller doesn't mean that you still aren't little Kaz to me." Adriana was pleased that the boy had manners. Even though she had intruded on his time alone, he still offered her to stay seated. In addition, he even alerted the waitress to come over. It was a sign that Adriana should probably order something as well. Not something someone would do if they wanted the other person to leave immediately.

Nevertheless, his inquiry about the situation could wait for Adriana was famished. First, she needed to order something. "Hello, can I please have a serving of the takoyaki, yakitori, gyoza, kinoko, torikatsu, and a bowl of yaki udon? And also one bottle of sake with two glasses for myself and the gentleman. Wait. And six shots of your strongest Ryu Rum. Did you want anything else little Kaz? It's on me." Adriana asked the boy with an innocent expression on her face. She might have been a stranger to him, but it was obvious that she meant no harm to the boy.

"Become Taller...Who exactly are you?" he replied, leaning forward in his chair. The woman was either delusional or had a much more complicated history than she had shared yet. The only person that would have seen him any younger than he was now, would have been his clansmen. And she was surely not one of them.

She neglected his next question and began an expansive order of food. Kaz just watched as the list rattled on and on and on, ending with six shots of rum. And then to top it all off she offered to pay. With a deep breath he looked at the waitress, "Well I suppose I'll have a bit more sushi and some unagi," he concealed that he'd be at this table for some time now.

He turned back to the woman as the waitress nodded and rushed to the kitchen to put in the lengthy order. "Thanks for getting the tab. But about this Little Kaz business. I'm still not sure who you are or why it is you've given me that nickname. I'd say you have the wrong person and I don't want you to end up purchasing a large meal for a stranger if that's the case. Or if you need my help with something, this is a strange way to go about it." Kaz had been through a fair amount in his life. Surprises from his past, betrayals and the demonic pits opening up. But he was truly confused as to what was happening now.

"Ugh, where do I begin," Adriana sighed as she rubbed her head and leaned back to get a little bit more comfortable. "Remember growing up at the clan? I dropped you off there at the request of your parents." She turned her head around to see whether the waitress was already on her way. She really needed some liquor to get through this conversation. Fortunately, the service at the establishment was top notch. The waitress was already on her way to their table with the food and drinks. With grace, she placed the Joyan cuisine on their table along with the bottle of sake and two glasses. Lastly, she placed the six shots between the two of them. Adriana thanked the waitress for the superb service and grabbed the first shot. She signed Kazimir to get one as well. "We are going to need this to get through this conversation, little Kaz." She took a big gulp and downed the shot. The fiery Ryu Rum left behind a smooth yet burning sensation of aromas in Adriana's throat as she placed the empty shot glass back on the table.

He watched the woman rub her head and it only served to confuse the mage even more. Everything she did was as if he should have some knowledge of what was going on. Nothing about it made sense and his mind was already turbulent from the reports about his guildhall.

"What? How do you know about that? My parents?" He set aside the drink in his hand and the nearly full bento box. Thoughts of his parents had nearly faded from his mind after all these years. Thousands of unanswered questions buried away.

"I don't..."
the waitress returned and placed a plethora of food on the table between them. "You can't possibly know about my parents. And why would they have requested that of you?" His elbows propped himself up on the table. His gloved hands meeting in front of his face, with his eyes staring over them at the woman. His past was a long-forgotten detail, and he rarely felt as vulnerable as he did now, with the potential this woman had if what she said was true. He searched his memories for the day he was dropped off at the clan, but it was all shrouded in a the haze of time. All that lingered was the vague outline of a person walking away.

"No thanks. I'd rather stay sober for this." He waited for her to throw back a shot in an instant.

"Suit yourself," Adriana replied. She then downed the remaining five shots in a row and wiped her mouth with the back of her hand. The summer temperatures and strong liquor gave her a flush on her cheeks. She leaned back once again to get more comfortable and let out a deep sigh. It was time to answer some questions.

"I met them in Sin many years ago. At that time, you were probably around the age of one. They were both interested in finding the Forbidden City. They were not sure if they would ever return from the journey. Therefore, they requested me to bring you to a clan in Joya to be raised. Since they were well acquainted with the Joyan clan, they knew that you would be raised there properly."

This conversation wasn't going to be easy. Kaz probably had a lot more questions to wrap his mind around the situation. Fortunately, Adriana was there to answer them and shed some light on his history. She awaited the next question while eating some of the gyoza that was placed on the table.

He cocked a brow at how quickly the woman knocked back the line of shots. Kaz folded his hands on the table ready for them to get down to business and unravel the mystery of her sudden appearance. A cool breeze swept over the veranda. His eye lingered to the sake still ready to be poured, contemplating if he needed a drink himself after all.

His gloved hand tightened on the other, as the woman spoke about his parents. A chill ran through his back. The forbidden city? His whole life he knew nothing and now this woman sat before him claiming to have the knowledge of a life left behind.

"Easy enough information to make up. Do you have something to back up this claim with...miss...,"
he remarked calmly and tried to bait her to give her name. Hoping that any information would help him put the pieces together.

He hid it, but there was something watchful and reassuring about her presence for being a stranger to his life. Unless what she said was actually true. But she was already right about the age he was when he was given to the clan. A detail that was enough to elude to her knowledge about his life.

"And if all this is true...Why now,"
he took a glass and poured himself some sake and tipped it slowly down his throat. He was never a heavy drinker but even he could use a bit.

"The name is Adriana," she said. Kazimir was, however, still not convinced. "What about that girl you would always run off with when you were still growing up at the clan? They might not have noticed you sneaking away, but I surely did." From afar, Adriana had checked up on Kazimir from time to time to ensure that he was growing up safely. Even though it was not a part of what she had promised his parents, she felt guilty after they never returned.

"Ugh, how do I say this. I sort of feel responsible for the disappearance of your parents." She wasn't sure how Kazimir would process the information that she was about to share, but she didn't want there to be any secrets about his parents.

"If I had not told them the information that I possessed about the Forbidden City, they might not have ever attempted to search for it. Once they found out that I knew some details about it, they would not stop bothering me about it. They had dedicated both their lives to researching its existence. Rather than seeking gold or fame, they believed that certain flora existed there which could be used to cure numerous illnesses in Sin. Seeing the good they wanted to accomplish, I gave them the information but warned them that no one had ever returned after attempting to search its location. That is why they gave you to the Joyan clan to be raised there in case they did not return."

Even though Adriana didn't ensure their disappearance directly, she did provide the necessary information which allowed them to continue their research. She had refused to share it with them countless times, however, they never gave up asking her about it. Eventually, Adriana started to believe in them as well. Perhaps they would actually return after finding its location, she thought at the time. Alas, they did not. She was afraid of how Kazimir would respond to her explanation. Would she blame Adriana?

You should be proud of them. They were excellent researchers with kind hearts."

He had heard that name before but could not place it at the moment. Somewhere in the past or throughout his time as a knight. Whatever thoughts he had about the name of the person faded to the far recesses of his mind when she mentioned that ever so delicate detail of his past. His hand froze in the air with the cup of sake teetering in his grasp. "How could you?" he stammered out and slowly lowered the cup to the table. His eyes wide and fixed on the woman now.

His throat ran dry. His toes flexed under the thick leather fabric of his boots. "So...you were there. Saw me with the clan. I suppose that means...you did know." He turned away and gazed out at the street. The wind softy squalled up around their table and flitted away. He listened to the story as he gathered his own thoughts and endless questions into something bearable. He closed his eyes, thinking of all the nights he spent as a child. Lost in his thoughts of abandonment. The cold and distance he built up within himself and replacing the concept of parents with clansmen. Strangers who grew to be his family. His eyes clenched a second tighter with a deep breath through his nose.

"This is...Researchers you say,"
he gave a meek smile at the thought. He turned to face the woman once more. "It seems then...that you ended up seeing me grow more than they did. I spent a lot of nights as a child thinking about who they were. Great mages. People of mystery, forced to fight some great evil. Researchers though? How quaint."

He turned and his hair fell across the side of his face. The black leather glove brushed across his cheek, quickly whipping the tear from it. He cleared his throat, "This is huh. I don't know exactly how to take it. Or you for that matter." He sat all the way back in his seat, his normal knightly posture sunk into the cushioned fabric.

"So you even know about that girl from the clan? yet another memory that had become dimmer with time.

"Thank you for telling me what happened to my parents. And I guess...for making sure I had a home Adriana. Even if it is still hard to believe." As much as it seemed far fetched, there was something about the woman that leaned towards welcoming and honest. And the name coupled with the heavy drinking began to bring some clarity to the reputation of the maiden.

"Why you though?"

"I-I am so sorry that you had to grow up without parents. If only I didn't share the information with them," she agonized. Adriana still blamed herself for their disappearance. Even though she had made sure that their child would grow up safely, she still felt as if she didn't do enough.

"I was always there," Adriana muttered. She knew that the conversation would eventually take such a turn after sharing the details with him, but it was much harder than expected.

"Many concern themselves about the more tangible evils, however, your parents understood that in order to help out the people they had to tackle the more obvious problems. Empires fall, kings change, but the people remain. Under different banners and different names, their issues consistently exist. Many blame a regime for the shortcomings and hardships that they endure, however, it should be noted that they do not always care about the people. Your parents understood that. They were extremely intelligent humanitarians interested in creating a better future for everyone."

It was understandable that Kazimir would be confused about the profession of his parents. He lived an entirely different life compared to them, however, Adriana didn't want him to think that his parents were just researchers. They were kind-hearted individuals willing to sacrifice everything in order to ensure a better future for the commoners. They believed that certain diseases could easily be treated with the flora present in the Forbidden City and risked their own lives in an attempt to obtain it.

"No need to thank me," Adriana replied. "I was situated in Sin at the time to shadow certain individuals. It lasted longer than expected and during my time there I got acquainted with your parents. They taught me the Sinese language. In return, I helped them with their other researches based on what I had learned from my travels."

He shook his head and finally waved a hand to dismiss the idea with a wistful smile, "You don't have to apologize. After all, It seems I owe you a great deal. having looked after me in my youth." He paused to look at the woman. The face of a stranger but one that had been there with him for his young life. Silently making sure he was okay in the background. "I'm glad you shared that information with them. If my parents were anything like me...they wouldn't have given up searching regardless. In reality," he gave a small breathy chuckle, "I would have probably made the same choice to help the people. It's just nice to know...they were good people. And they must have trusted you a lot if they put me in your care."

"Although, I don't think 'little Kaz' suits me much anymore,"
he tried to make a joke and lighten the mood a little. Despite the whirlpool of feelings within. He took in the sight of people trying to live normal lives after demonic attacks and in the face of draconic threats that now arose. All the while having to worry about disease and famine.

"The people do all remain..don't they. The problems with regimes and empires have become ever more apparent. Even the knights fell to corruption and self-interests. Maybe there is little place in the world for such sprawling organizations to really help people."

It was nice to finally learn about his parents. "I meant quaint in a positive way. I think it's delightful that they weren't anything that I could have feared them to be. And worked hard for a better future in a way they loved doing. That is precious information to me, Adriana.

"Are you sure they died? If it's alright with you...I'd like to know the information about the forbidden city myself sometime. What they were working on. He still couldn't believe the person sitting before him had been watching him all those years ago. She probably knew more lingering details about his life than most and he barely knew anything about her.

"don't be modest. I owe you a great deal...for helping my parents. And me," He gave the woman a small bow and tried to reassure her that he didn't blame her in any way for what happened with his parents. He was glad she helped them strive for a better tomorrow and help the people.

"Your sinese may be better than mine then. Shall I,"
he offered to pour her a cup of the sake. "If you're familiar with the custom, having spent time in Joya after all?" He poured her cup and slid it to her side of the table.

"You wouldn't happen to be, THE Adriana, would you?"

Adriana was glad to hear that Kazimir did not blame her for the disappearance of his parents. All this time, Adriana was walking around feeling guilty about what had happened and terrified about how Kazimir would reply once he found out. It seemed that the boy had matured a lot more than she thought. Not only did he assess what had happened with reason, he even cracked a joke to lighten up the mood and cheer up Adriana.

"Trust me, you will always be little Kaz to me,"  she chuckled. Kazimir reflected upon what Adriana had told him and shared some of his insights as well in return. Adriana listened to his words with joy for it showed her that he had grown up to become thoughtful, caring, and wiser beyond his years. She -no, not even his parents could have predicted that their child would turn out so fine. As his reflection upon Adriana's words ended, he went into a direction that Adriana was not willing to discuss. Therefore, she kept her reply brief.

"I am not sure whether they died or not. And I don't want you to disappear as well. Someday, I might share more details about it but not tonight."

Despite all that, Kazimir decided to show proper Joyan customs. Something that he had most likely picked up from his time at the clan. "Of course,"  she said as she accepted the glass. It was a polite custom from Joya known as henpai to fill the drinking partner's glass first. The younger person would fill the older person's glass, and then the partner, in return, filled their glass. Therefore, Adriana reciprocated and filled Kazimir's glass as well. "Fairy Tail's Master? That would be me."

As the situation became more casual, Adriana felt as if she could share her other intentions for appearing before Kazimir. "Honestly, that is the other reason that I am here. I have heard about what happened to Phoenix Feather. I have other duties that I have to attend because of it. My position as the Master of Fairy Tail was only temporary," she paused briefly and took a sip of her drink before she continued.

"Instead of rebuilding Phoenix Feather, why not move into Fairy Tail and become my successor as the Master of the guild? You could bring the remainder of Phoenix Feather with you to move in as well."

He let out a sideways smile and shook his head. It was a silly name, but knowing the history behind it made it more comfortable for him to hear it. And even to accept it as part of the hand he was dealt. "Alright then. Guess there's no avoiding that then," he added but wasn't bothered by it. He was lucky to have someone as thoughtful and caring as her watching over him in his youth. Given how the clan turned out in the end, he doubted she was there for that and didn't want to sour the moment with less than delightful truths about the clan leader.

The more important matter was her evasion of the questions at hand. But a small glimmer was in the mage's eye when she said she wasn't sure if they had died. "Interesting. I'll hold you to that. I can be just as stubborn and inquisitive as they were. Don't worry. I'll find my way there one day." Given how long it had been, if they had not returned yet then it was most likely they did die. And he had plenty of time to make his way down there, but not with everything else happening in the world right now. "I have invading dragons to focus on before any of that though."

Kaz nodded and took a sip of the drink she poured for him. He had no intention of letting it get away from him and losing himself to the whims of alcohol. Once he took his drink he poured her another as she spoke. "Ah...I began to suspect as much. With what I've heard about your description and how easily you leaped up to the second floor. But the real giveaway is that they say Lady Adriana of Fairy Tail has an insatiable taste for liquor."

"Nonetheless. A pleasure to meet you. And I should count myself lucky my parents trusted me with someone so talented." he set down the sake glass and closed his eyes for a brief moment to take in her words, involuntarily imagining the destruction that ravaged the guildhall.

"Yes...It's a tragedy. I've not made my way back yet. I guess you've been keeping track of me since after the clan it seems?" He cocked his head to the side, unsure about where she was going with this, "Temporary? Do you need my help with these other duties then?"

"What!"
He leaned back in his seat. The destruction of his guild was still the forefront of his mind, now riddled with memories and forgotten truths of his past. Only to be finally bombarded with this. He paused and took a deep settling breath. "Well, this is...sudden." He left the sake and with his elbows on the table he folded his hands together in thought.

"I've only just truly met you. And this offer of yours is...more than a generous one. It would be an honor to become your successor. The least I could do after you have been so integral in helping me through life, even if it was through the shadows. I've been trying to build something for a long time and it seems Fiore just isn't the place for a knightly order any longer. But, how would your guild feel about it? A stranger coming in?"

It was a hard choice, but one he would accept. He had a duty to repay her and with his home destroyed what better time than to move into something stable and give the people that chose to follow him a proper home again. The change of demeanor could do the dutiful mage some good as well.

"Times are changing. Each guild needs a suitable Master to lead them in these trying times. Everyone in the guild understands that there isn't a suitable successor within the guild at the moment. A strong leader with a sense of duty and justice to lead them towards the right part is what they need right now. I have already vouched for you. " It was the truth. Fairy Tail was in need of strong leadership and the numbers from Phoenix Feather carrying over to Fairy Tail would also be a great addition.

"I didn't have to tell them much since they already knew about you. I guess your reputation precedes you as a Wizard Saint," she said as she took a sip from her drink. "As of tonight, I will not return to the guild. Right here, right now, I shall bestow the position of Master upon you while marking you with the crest of the guild. Promise me one thing though. Promise me that you will protect and lead them." It was clear from Adriana's tone that she was being serious. She did not intend on returning to Fairy Tail. As she stated before, her position was only temporary.

Kaz folded his hands on the table. "You've certainly come back into my life with a lot of heavy information." He leaned back thinking about the offer once more. One that he already accepted but still needed to settle in his mind. He was certain his current members would understand.

"Thank you for thinking of me, and entrusting it to me. I would be honored to become your successor. After all, it's the least I could do. And in these trying times...my members could use a new home and another beginning. Something different too. it'll be good for me too. Well if your members are willing...then so am I Adriana."

He waved off the comment about being a wizard saint, "It's just a title." Being a saint was a great honor, but he still wasn't used to all the attention that it brought along with it.

"What? Now? You're not going back?"
his surprise turned into a faint grin, "you were certainly sure of things when you came to speak to me then." He still felt the presence of his phoenix mark on his shoulder. Burned into his life for now and onward but only a memory now.

"But if leaving now is what you want then....I'll accept now," He said and pulled down the shoulder of his shirt to reveal his right shoulder where the old guild mark was. he felt like many marks had been left there over time. The Rune Knights, The inquisition, back to the knights, and then Phoenix Feather. Now it would be another one, a new road to walk.

"It's an honor,"
he replied, matching the serious tone in her voice. "I promise, I will protect them and lead them to the best of my abilities. "it's a shame you won't be staying around...I have so many questions for you...about the past. And to thank you for everything. For being an unseen protector to me. You may be the only link to that part of my life I have left. And if you are ever in need...you will always have someone to call on."

"Indeed, after tonight I have other matters to attend," Adriana replied. She placed her hand on Kazimir's shoulder and replaced his Phoenix Feather tattoo with the Fairy Tail crest. "I know you will." Suddenly, she felt the presence of the others. Perfect timing, she thought. Adriana had wrapped things up here and was finally ready to move on. She wouldn't have to worry about the guild anymore. "I have to go now, but I am sure that we will see each other soon." Adriana stood up from her seat and downed her last glass of sake. She was going to need it. With a gentle smile, she grabbed Kazimir's face with both her hands and leaned forward. Her face was a bit flustered from all the alcohol she had consumed. "Don't worry. You got this, little Kaz." As she finished her sentence, she turned into flowers and disappeared from the venue.
