“Will this assassination come with free pardons from the gods?” asked Nadine rhetorically as she read over the letter she had been handed. The darkness of the alleyway didn’t bother her in the slightest, her night vision helping her to see things with complete clarity.

“This is the will of Bishop Santos. His decisions are sanctioned by the gods, yes.” The voice of the robed man grated like gravel as he stared at the demi-human from under his hood. “Our motives are beyond your understanding. Do you accept the request or not?”

“I haven’t choked you with this paper yet, so that’s a favorable sign for you. If Bishop Santos is good for the money then I’m good for the work.” She folded the paper up before pocketing it. Her gaze turned to stare back at the priest without any hint of amusement. “Tell the bishop I’ll be at Sagrada Church before morning to collect.” Nothing more needed to be said. She watched silently as the priest left her alone in the darkness, only releasing a sigh once the man was gone.

Killing for money wasn’t beneath Nadine. She had done it plenty of times while serving in the navy. Politically motivated assassinations, though? This was new territory for her. Even if she still considered Minstrel to be her home and Fiore’s King to be irrelevant, there were no two ways about this. She was going to murder people who probably didn’t deserve it.

“Glory to god,” she muttered beneath her breath as she set out.

The empty streets of Dahlia were always eerie at night. No one dared to venture outside unless they absolutely had to. Many windows were dark, but not for the lack of people. Barricading entry points was just a way of life here after the sun went down. With her ability to see in the dark Nadine could understand why the residents lived like this, and she didn’t envy them. The address she had been given was a little hard to find thanks to the poor upkeep of the town in general, but after some searching around she managed to find the right place.

From outside the home didn’t look like much. There weren’t any lights on that she could see inside, either. At a glance someone might think the place was deserted, but that’s the kind of place you’d want to hide in if you had a price on your head. Moving around to the back of the house didn’t show her anything different. Peering through a window revealed a dark kitchen. While there were sparse pieces of furniture inside she didn’t see any telltale signs of inhabitants like dishes or non-perishable goods being left out.

Slowly, she leaned an elbow into the window until it cracked and small shards fell onto the floor inside. She then picked off chunks until she was able to fit an arm through the gap and unlatch the window. After opening it she climbed inside, mindful of the shattered glass.

There wasn’t as much dust inside as she expected. Not enough to leave footprints on the floor, at least. As softly as she could she snapped the fingers of one hand, summoning a green magic seal temporarily as she activated a spell. Truth be told she didn’t expect to encounter significant resistance from political refugees hiding in the dark. Dissenters were usually only trouble when they attacked their opponents directly and brazenly. There was no harm in being ready for anything, though. A whole lot of nothing is what she ended up with after combing through the house, however; no one was in any of the rooms or obvious hiding spaces.

It took a second search for Nadine to notice a closet had been moved out of place. Instead of flush with the wall it was moved forward at an angle. A closer look revealed a door behind the large piece of furniture. With hardly any effort Nadine slid the closet out of the way before trying the door’s handle. It resisted her efforts to turn it until the demi-human got serious and broke the lock with a sudden exertion of force. The effort made an audible popping noise.

She opened the door just enough so she could see through with one eye. There was a stairway on the other side leading down into a basement of some kind. The flicking of candlelight and hushed voices told her all she needed to know.

Nadine didn’t need to descend all the way down to see everyone in the small room below. That wasn’t why she stopped, though. Her golden eyes stared down at two children attempting to hide behind a woman the demi-human assumed to be their mother. The priest hadn’t mentioned anything about kids being involved, but her expression remained stoic.

“Who are you?” questioned an elderly man stepping forward in front of the group, “the church sent you, didn’t they?”

Shifting her stare to the man Nadine didn’t say anything at first. He practically outed them as the targets of this job. She had to wonder what kind of power he had, if indeed he had any at all, that could threaten Bishop Santos. It was more likely that this whole affair was to make an example of dissenters than dealing with any real threats. She looked away to study the last person in the group: a middle aged man standing protectively in front of the woman and children.

“You three.” Calmly Nadine pointed to the woman, and then the two men. “Upstairs. The children stay here.” Her tone was threatening as she made the demand, hinting at consequences if they disobeyed. Nadine then turned her back on the group before heading back upstairs to wait.

When the three adults met her she gestured for them to follow her into another room. The younger man had tried to talk things out, but Nadine set him straight with a harsh glare that left no room for argument. This business would already be unpleasant enough without the family begging for their lives. At this point it was an execution of people who couldn’t even fight back. Nadine had to remind herself that this was not her home, but that did little to relieve the weight she felt.

She didn’t hold back when she killed the three adults, wanting each death to be quick and clean with one blow to the back of the head. For someone who normally hunted beasts and monsters, normal humans seemed so fragile. She took a few minutes to gather her thoughts after, ignoring the warm blood on her gloves. It hadn’t slipped her mind that there were still two survivors left.

Nadine took her gloves off and left them upstairs before heading into the basement again. The children were huddled together in a corner, crying and whimpering.

“Shhh,” cooed the woman softly as she lowered herself to sit in front of them. “Now is not the time for tears. You must be brave, yes? It’s what your mother would want. She had to leave with the others, but before she left she asked if I could help you two sleep.”

It took some time before the children moved towards her. She didn’t answer any of their questions, and merely kept humming a lullaby she remembered from her childhood. After the waiting paid off Nadine managed to get them to sit on either side of herself. She told them to close their eyes and think of their family before snapping their necks one at a time. She moved the children upstairs and laid them beside their kin before grabbing her gloves and leaving the house.
