Pest Control [Keita]

Today, Shichiro would be taking on a job with his partners Panther Lily and Keita. It fell under pest control once again but they would be hunting all manner of vermin today instead of just rodents. He liked that idea a lot and was hoping to be able to fight wild beasts other than rats all the time. All manner of beasts had been growing too large in population and it was up to the knights to weed them out. So, he'd meet up with his cousin, Keita somewhere near the forest entrance in order to do so and give him the rundown.

Wearing his Battle Cast Helmet and Armor, Shichiro had checked himself to make sure he was wearing the remainder of his equipment. He was of course, wearing his weapon of choice, the sacrificial shield. Alongside his armor and weapon, he was wearing his Jaan Earrings, Amulet of Physical Resistance and a ring known as Gheed's Greed. The ring didn't have any combat value but wearing it always seems to allow him to find more valuables than normal for some strange reason. He knew it was magical but he was glad it didn't have any negative impact on him.

Keita was once again going to be dragged into a mission where he would have to wipe out some indigenous species that was going amok, like the rats, although he hoped to all the gods that it was not actually rats, or he would probably just sit off to the side and watch as Shichiro did everything. Hee was definitely tired of all of the rat exterminations that he had been going on recently, as there must have been a better way to handle the rats other than simply throwing a bunch of the Rune Knights at them, but he wasn’t one of the higher ups, so what did he know.

Keita was getting ready, as he was unsure exactly how long he was going to be out in the forest, so he grabbed some food and water, as well as a small tent, in case they were going to stay in the area overnight, although he thought that was unlikely. He then made his way to the entrance of the forest that the two had agreed to meet up at when he waqs told they were going on this request, and saw Shichiro standing the re. “Heya Shichiro!” he would call out to his cousin.

Awaiting his cousin, it didn't take too long for him to arrive at their meetup location. "Hey there Keita, seems like we got another job to do. Today we're exterminating all manner of beasts today. Some rather large coyotes, bears and, you know, Rats have been terrorizing the farmers and some citizens today and we need to get rid of them. Well, some of them. We're not hear to commit genocide after all, just a bit of a culling." Shichiro had explained. He wasn't even sure if they needed to go that far himself but he was told every time they tried to shoo them off they'd only stay away for a day or two before coming back and trying again as if they hadn't learned their lessons on the first few run ins.

So now, the farmers had no choice but to resort to putting them down permanently in hopes they could get rid of them for good. They might change their mind about inhabiting areas close to human civilization and move to lands further down the way. Regardless of the route they take, Shichiro intended to do his job and he intended to do it well. He didn’t want to hear any complaints at a later point in time.

As Keita walked over to his cousin and started talking to him, his cousin turned around and started to speak to him about the mission, after a pretty benign greeting. Keita seemed to be holding his breath, as he really did not want to fight the damned rats again, and so he was hoping that Shichiro would say something other than rats. Luckily he did, as he described that they were going to just take care of a bunch of wild predators and other annoying animals that were harassing farmers, and that they specifically were not going to go and kill a massive amount of them just because.

After heaving a heavy sigh of relief, Keita nodded and was going to start speaking. “That’s good, I don’t think I could handle killing another one of those damned rats, haha.” He would say as he shook his head a little. Keita knew the area that they were supposed to go to was the farming area, and so after the little conversation with his cousin, he nodded and had a bit more enthusiasm about helping out the farmers, so he started to walk towards the farms. “Alright then, I’m ready, let’s go.” Keita would say as he was walking.

Shichiro simply chuckled at the fact that Keita was relieved they weren't killing rats anymore but he did mention there were still most likely rats around that need to be culled as well. Well, as long as his cousin was happy, he was happy too. Heading off to their destination, they had to meet up with some local farmers in order to deal with the problem at hand, Shihciro looked around for any signs of the vermin that might be nearby now. To his avail, he didn't spot anything out of the ordinary so he just kept it pushing.

Eventually, he had made it to the farmlands of Orchid, which to his surprise was not what he was expecting. He figured it would still be mostly forest wherever he went but there seems to be a whole nother town not too far away from the city. It looks a lot nicer like a standard farmland with a few ranches here and there. He was quite impressed even though he wasn't a farmer himself and came to admire the scenery. Rows of crops had been lid out in perfect symmetry, growing various vegetables and fruits. He could even spot some animals grazing off in the distance.

After settling themselves, it seemed that neither of them needed to prepare anything else, as the normal animals were something that they could easily defeat, and so they simply needed to get to the location and it would be all good. As they started walking to the location of the farms, the started to get out of the large city like area and deeper into the more rural parts of the towns, which made the scenery a lot better. It started out as just large fields of grass that were on the left and right of the road they were walking on, but eventually one could see the fields with farms on them stretching out into the distance, with the cattle grazing and there being neat rows of different types of produce.

Keita always loved scenes like this, as it was very tranquil, and this paired very nicely with the weather, which was slightly warm but with a cool breeze. Sadly this near perfect day would be ruined with the bloodshed of some pests, but Keita was going to try and enjoy it while it lasted. They had finally reached the farming area, and they saw a couple of farmers seemingly waiting for them on the road.

Taking a few more moments to look around, Shichiro inhaled a bit, exhaling shortly after before continuing on his way. Turns out there were a few farmers made aware of their arrival as they seem to be standing around waiting for the two of them to arrive. Shichiro would greet them and even though he assumed they already knew what he and his cousin were there for, he decided it was in his best interest to tell them once more they were the knights tasked with clearing out the vermin for the day. The farmers returned their greeting, informing them they had already known who they were and what they were here for.

It was the middle of the day though and Coyotes are nocturnal so there wasn't much point in hunting them down now. They could try and find a few rats nearby but that was also a fruitless endeavor as they too were mostly active at night. Instead, they were here to show them to their lodgings for the day until it was time for them to get to work and tell them a few rules of how to go about handling the critters and vermin they were tasked with getting rid of.

As the two of them got to the farmers, it seemed as if the two of them were already ready to tell them something about the mission. It seemed that the two of them wanted something done about the coyotes that were harassing their livestock, and so the two of the Rune Knights did not have anything to do at the moment, because the only thing that was annoying them right now was seemingly rats. These were the normal, run of the mill rats that seemed to have gotten into their stores, and this was something that he as a Rune Knight shouldn’t do because of the mission, but he was too nice. He immediately offered to help them put some traps up and other things that they needed to get rid of the rats.

The farmers thanked him profusely for his hello, and so he spent a better part of the afternoon, he was moving boxes and setting up rat traps in the barn, as well as shuttling rats out of the areas when he found them with his earth magic. After that, he met back up with Shichiro when they were all having dinner, and after this it would be time to sleep for the next day.

The farmers had continued their explanation of what not to do when it comes to hunting down the vermin they were hired to exterminate. The first thing they wanted to address was how to go about exterminating the vermin around the area. First, they forbade the use of spells since they didn't want any harm coming to their crops or their livestock just in case the spell missed and hit something important of theirs. This was fine, since he understood how important growing food for the city and themselves was, so he agreed to that condition. They also cautioned them to not swing around their giant weapons, if they had any so they don't destroy their fields and orchards.

This was a bit harder but he still agreed to it nonetheless as he was confident in his abilities. After they had gotten their concerns out of the way, they had led the two to their room for the day to rest from their long walk. Shichiro wasn't tired but he's learned to take what little breaks he can when they are presented to him. Following the farmers, Shichiro had gone to the room they were supposed to stay in until nightfall.

The farmers started pointing out the guidelines that the two should follow when they were hunting down all of the coyotes and other vermin, if they were there and weren’t coyotes. The biggest one that they wanted to stress was that of not swinging around giant weapons, or just not causing massive destruction towards the crops or their fence and other infrastructure. This was completely reasonable, and Keita nodded profusely at this, as he wanted to make sure that he was keeping everyone’s interest at heart when he did these requests. The reason that he joined the Rune Knights was because he had heard of the massive feats of them helping people who couldn’t help themselves, and he loved the idea of that.

He really wanted to be a kind and gentle scholar helping the common man, so this request was near and dear to him. He continued talking to the kind farmers until it was time for light’s out. After the sun went down, both of them were assigned to a room, as the farmers only had a single spare room for them. As they got into the room, they were getting ready to sleep, and Keita simply told Shichiro that he was going to keep a little clay sentry to guard them while they were asleep.

Entering the room assigned to them, Shichiro decided that he would get some shut eye for a little bit since their mission would truly begin at night. After all, their prey was mostly nocturnal creatures so it was best for them to rest now until nightfall. Looking around the room, it was fairly plain compared to what he was staying in in Orchid. At least it would be comfortable since the had proper sheets and comforters unlike that stone bed he was sleeping on. He knew the city was in shambles but it was quite annoying really. So this change of pace was quite comfortable. Admittedly, he was just being cheap and using the rooms provided by the Knights rather than just renting out a comfortable one.

Afterwards, he informed Keita he'd be going to sleep early until night had come so they could begin their mission. Climbing into the bed provided to him, he realized it was quite comfortable. He could get used to this. Panther Lily had also been relieved there was something soft to rest his body on, immediately going to sleep upon touching the bed. Following Lily's example Shichiro too climbed into the bed, shortly falling asleep.

As they were both about to fall asleep, Keita made sure that he created a small little clay doll to protect them. It was a six inch version of himself made of clay, so it was all brown, before the real Keita went to sleep. Clay Keita then simply sat on the edge of an end table next to the bed that the real Keita was currently falling asleep in, and one could see his feet dangling off of the end. As the little Clay Keita was looking around making sure that no one was going to interrupt the sleep of the duo, it seemed like nothing was particularly going on. It wasn’t completely dark out, because the two were going to sleep now and wake up in the dead of night so that they could start hunting the coyotes and other nocturnal things that were going to try and kill the livestock or just cause a lot more problems for the farmers. So far, the sleeping schedule passed by without a hitch, and so they both woke up in the dead of night. All they could see was the light of a candle, and Keita woke up and started to go and wake up Shichiro so they could start hunting.

Falling asleep with the last sight being Keita making a clay golem to keep watch over them, he had a brief dream of being a ninja for a little while. It felt like only two minutes had passed but really he had slept for a couple of hours until he was awoken later by the light of a candle. Getting up, Shichiro took a few seconds to collect himself and turned towards his sleeping companion, Lily Panther to shake him away. It was time for them to get up and prepare for their job of hunting down the nocturnal predators and vermin that plagued these farms.

Getting out of the bed, Shichiro thought it best to leave his sacrificial shield in the room where they were staying. He didn't have to worry about it being stolen since it was awfully heavy and normal people couldn't even move it. Turning to see if Keita was fully awake, he nodded towards him before collecting Panther Lily and exiting the room in order to go back out into the farmland, Since he couldn't use his shield, he figured he'd have to improvise and borrow one of the farmer's gardening tools known as a pitchfork.

Now that the both of them were up, it was time for the two cousins to go out and actually do the job. It was going to be slightly difficult to do the job considering Keita could not see in the dark very well, but they had a hooded lantern for a reason, so they might as well use it. The hooded lantern would be good in catching glimpses of the coyotes that were after the livestock of the farm, and so Keita made sure to go and collect it and refill it, making sure that it was topped up before they went outside to go look for the canines.

Keita did not want to disturb the farmers, as they were fast asleep and were expecting some good news tomorrow, or when they woke up in about four hours, and so he carefully made his way through the house, whispering to Shichiro when he was heading out. “Alright, I saw you left your shield in the room, what are you going to use as a weapon? Just your magic, like me?” Keita would ask, wondering if his cousin could do something with his magic that was not just burning down entire regions.

On their way out of the house, being as quiet as humanly possible, Keita had whispered a question to Shichiro inquiring about leaving his shield behind in the room there. Responding to his cousin he said, "Well, you heard the farmers earlier today can't really swing around my massive 'weapon' like that with the crops in the field. We also can't use magic around the crops either for fear of destroying their harvest. I might as well just use something I can find around the farm." It was a bit of an inconvenience but it was a bearable one that wouldn't hinder it too much.

After picking up the pitchfork to use as his improvised weapon, he inspected it for a little while before letting out a huff. He was sure he'd have his pay docked before the night was over betting on this thing breaking in the middle of a fight. Letting out a sigh, it was better than just going in unprepared before wielding it with his right hand. Afterwards, he'd instruct PantherLily to go off alone since he was smaller, more agile and could navigate through the darkness better than he could since he was a cat. Shichiro would stick with Keita unless they decided they would split up too.

Keita was calmly listening to Shichiro explain what they were talking about when the farmers had asked them not to cause that much damage to the crops around them. He wasn’t sure how he hadn’t thought of this before, but he was wondering where the coyotes were going to actually show up. He didn’t know that they were going to be fighting almost entirely in the fields, and so he had to rethink his strategy on what he was going to do. His earth magic could definitely be nice to the surrounding environment, but it would be much better to do something else, so he thought about it for a moment. Keita then decided to use his magic to make his cousin a spear made out of stone, since that would be more effective than a pitch fork for dispatching the animals. They soon got outside so that Keita could actually make the spear, and then he handed it to Shichiro. “Here, this should be better for you, I’ll probably make one for myself also.” Keita would say quietly to Shichiro, before thinking about how he was going to tackle the combat. He then created an atlatl out of stone with a few small spears as ammunition.

Being handed an earth spear instead, Shichiro looked at it briefly before taking it and putting away the farmer's pitchfork. He was relieved he didn't have to break somebody's pitchfork since he wasn't really in the mood to hear a complaint and compensate them for almost triple what the item is actually worth. He was glad his cousin was able to shape weapons out of rock, although he did question the durability of it with how powerful his swings would be. Either way, he was happy about it as he made his way through the fields. It didn't take long before he found some giant rats tearing into a ripened tomato, three of them to be exact.

Shichiro wasted no time throwing the earth spear at one of them, impaling it. He watched it wriggle for a bit as the other two began to run off. He didn't mind as long as they didn't come back to finish their meal. Walking towards the rat he skewered, he'd pull it out of the rat while it was still squirming, killing it from blood loss. Afterwards, he went to find the other vermin that had been scattering when the first rat died. Chasing after them, he wondered how Panther Lily was holding up.

Keita had followed Shichiro out to the field after they both had one of the stone spears that he had created for them, and it was pretty relaxing walking through the fields, looking for potential invaders. It seemed that on the other side of the field, Shichiro had found something, as he had heard a meaty thunk sound, and noticed some figures running around in the distance, probably running away from him, and so Keita thought that he needed to pick up the pace for finding these creatures. He had no doubt that Shichiro and his familiar had whatever creatures ran around near him under control, so he went to the opposite side to look for the other things.

He had heard that there were coyotes, and it would make sense with all of the large rodents and other things eating the farm produce, as they would attract their predators that wanted to eat them, the circle of life and all that. The problem was, that these predators ruined the farm, and the prey that they were hunting would devour the ripened produce immediately, so they all needed to go, ans as he thought this, he saw a rather large coyote off in the distance, eying him.

Lily Panther had been chasing down two of the rats that were scared off by Shichiro previously. He managed to catch sight of them running through the fields when they were fleeing from another direction. Panther Lily figured it was because of either Keita or his companion, Shichiro that might have done this and figured it was best for him to intercept and dispatch them with his musika sword. It didn't take long to do so since he was in their path and could easily intercept them. As for Shichiro, he continued to look around the field finding all sorts of vermin hanging around with smaller creatures coming to eat the crops and bigger creatures coming to eat the smaller ones, destroying the crops in the process.

Either way, they all had to be stopped one way or the other so Shihciro just continued to exterminate as many pests as he could in one night. Soon after, dawn had broken and Shichiro had regrouped with both panther Lily and his cousin, Keita. Soon after they had gone back to the farmer's home and told them they had exterminated as many as they could, even gathering them in a neat pile nearby to do with them as they pleased. The farmers had thanked them and informed the Knights they could stay for the day if they would rather rest before going back to the city, to which Shichiro agreed without hesitation.

Keita eyed the coyote in the distance, and it seemed that it had turned its head and was eyeing him as well, looking at him and making a snarling face, before suddenly rushing towards him. Keita was not the fastest person or the best at combat, but he knew how to use his opponent’s momentum to his own advantage, and so he carefully got ready, as it looked like the coyote was going to lunge at him, and he was correct. Keita positioned himself in a way that he could lean backwards when the coyote lunged at him, and the back of the spear would embed itself into the ground and stop, giving it enough hold to pierce through the coyote when he lunged at him. Keita did this when the coyote lunged at him, and the coyote skewered itself on the spear, and all Keita had to worry about was avoiding the claws and teeth while it died, and he only got a small scratch on his shoulder.

After that, there were only fairly small vermin, if you could call them small, it was all about context, roaming around the farm, and getting rid of any stragglers. After a while, the night was coming to a close as the sun peeked over the horizon, and they could not see any more vermin on the farm. They collected the bodies and were thanked by the farmers, who offered them another day to stay there to relax, and Shichiro agreed, so Keita accompanied him.
