Erebus

In this world of chaos and betrayal, Erebus was a lost soul always wandering the world. He carried a mark that he openly bears, pushed into the role of the enemy in order to survive. Granted, a few choice entities understood what his role was and left him to his life. Such as Esperia, and even greater evils. The ones above Eternal Nightmare, the Demon Lords. Their strength haunting his legacy, Erebus is on a hunt for power to rival superior entities. To become a God of men, today was no different in that desperate struggle.

He had ventured far and wide for a trip to the cliffs over Astera. The location was secluded and a base of sight for Eternal Nightmare. Far from the port and piers, the mountain side was a flat and damp from crashing waves.

Erebus stood there, somewhere to between  conscious of his surroundings and mistakably skeptical about everything on his mind as per usual. It was about time for a new disguise, he thought casually as he removed his cloak and helmet. Reaching to clench his dagger at the waist, the ex-rogue stared at it with concern. It was not enough to save him... but at least it could still help. Erebus hopped on his left foot like a springboard and began fencing as ‘training.’

Recently however, new dreams and concepts had come to him. Perhaps that decade in the abyss brought back some untapped potential. For that to be know however Erebus would seek out the elements themselves. None had influenced the growing mana he found in his body, as speculative of the other three elements. So now, try Water, he decided with forethought.

Being near the Ocean would generate plenty of ‘source’ material to attempt the impossible. That was the theory anyways.

In a matter of time well spent, a few interesting things occurred. For one, Bryson was going to begin his training as a Rune Knight page soon, which meant that not only would he protected but on some level he'd be trusted by the Fiorian government. On one hand he'd be watched closely, but on the other hand he'd also be exposed to some vital information in the near future. One other interesting occurrence, probably even more interesting, was that somehow him and the Wizard Lord Lich known as Odin had developed a bond. Odin had become his father figure and he had become Odin's child. Beneath all of that darkness and behind the stench of death, Bryson had found kindness out of the undead lord- something very few people have been subject to. It was an honor, to say the least. Although their relationship was not transactional, Bryson could benefit his old man in ways other people couldn't and vice versa. It was a win for both people. Of course only a select few would know about the Desiertans new status, specifically the higher ups in Eternal nightmare or whoever else Odin trusted. Bryson would never say a word about it to anyone.

Odin was a king in his own right, which ultimately made Lil B the prince of the world of nightmare. There was no reason for him to join Eternal nightmare either. His talents would fare better elsewhere. The small human slowly walked along the cliffs of Astera. He flaunted his armor as he walked gracefully and confidently on the rocky mountains, gazing out over the water and at the rest of the city. A few weeks ago Bryson was in a slightly different headspace. He was nervous about everything, like a puppy who had been abused over and over again then left to the streets for the gods to tend to if they so pleased. This bold confidence came from the fact that he knew he was protected here. If anyone even thought about harming him, they'd have something horrible coming for them. So, as the orange light grazed the sky and the sun had began to find its bed, the kid nibbled the side of his cheek. It was peaceful here, he thought as his cape flapped in the wind. When he turned his head, he saw a masculine figure ahead taking off his helmet. At that moment he realized exactly who it was.

"You're Erebus..." he said. Lil B had never met Erebus, but he knew who he was. From the rumors, he was extraordinary. Bryson kept himself from losing his shit, but truthfully he was excited. It was safe to say that he was a big fan of what he heard. "You're in my dads guild." He said. It was weird hearing himself refer to Odin as his dad out loud, but it rolled off of his tongue naturally. Perhaps it was because Lil B had never known his parents and he had some serious daddy and mommy issues...or maybe it was because Odin had done a good job treating him like a son.

The approach of new person brought Erebus back to his full attention, his body shifting to the side as if to turn around for the newcomer. He was looking at a child, maybe a bit younger than a teenager, with a cape around his neck. Erebus wasn’t normally on the receiving end of conversation, most who found such a luxury in him were quicker to attack for a promised reward.

The old/rogue responded to the boy’s opening line with a discerning gaze. Erebus decided to stop fencing stop the cliffside and tucked his knife back to his sheathe. “Thats my name, don’t wear it out.” Erebus wasn’t in immediate connection with Odin, and rather was called on for high risk - high reward ventures. Apart from that, Erebus represented Eternal Nightmare’s respect in a different way. By picking up the banner and spreading the namesake across all Fiore virtually.

Even so, Erebus wasn’t all too familiar with Odin’s son. Neither was he particularly ‘close’ with Odin yet either. Granted they were on speaking relations, that didn’t mean Odin and Erebus were buddies yet in this reality. “I didn’t know Zane was a father...” Erebus muttered, resting his hand on his chin in speculation. He tried to collect the logic but clearly he didn’t have enough fact or material, his decision rested upon whatever Lil B was currently telling him. His only guess was Zane, as Zane was the only other Human apart from himself. Odin was a skeleton without much interest in women, but then again, some things weren’t his business.

He filtered the info away and decided to see what the pre-teen was about. “Weird question here. Say I wanted to cast magic, but I only know how to do it through a weapon, if I wanted to cast magic through myself. Is there a particular way to do that that differs?” Erebus was stressed. He decided to wave it off. “Hey, like I said, weird question right?” He turned back around, and seemed invested to swing and fence his shadow once again. Unable to enact his craft just yet. Though— maybe with Bryson’s tips, he could figure this all out.

Suddenly the clouds over the cliff would begin to turn hostile. Their colors were darkening and a feeling of unease crept through the area. The arrival of a potential monster was possible.

Though, for now— it would just seem as though the weather was changing on them quickly.

"What? No. Not Zane. Are you always this out of loop with your guild? I'm Odin's kid." Bryson grunted. He was surprised Erebus didn't know who he was. Truth be told, Bryson was proud to admit it and he didn't hide it in this moment either. Odin was the boss around here, so it made him feel...special. He raised his eyebrow as Erebus' mind wandered back to whatever he was thinking about before Bryson appeared. The rogue asked a question and luckily, Bryson new the answer. Although the young boy wasn't able to muster his mana appropriately to use his own magic, he knew all too well about the art of magic. After all, the son of his master taught him how to read with the books in the house and nearly alllll of those books were about magic.

The mage of Nightmare turned back around. "I wouldn't call it a silly question I guess..." He began, placing his hand on his chin to lightly caress it with his fingers. "Everybody has mana, so usually anybody can use a magical item. It's a little easier to use spells since some items naturally drain the mana from your body. Whereas using magic for your own spells requires you controlling the mana yourself, or somethin'." He shrugged. "I don't know, I'm kinda workin on it myself." Just as he finished he noticed the clouds above him darkened. The waves crashed against the cliffs as if something strong...something dangerous was moving it. "Something's comin" Lil B snapped towards the sea, interrupting whatever Erebus would say after his statement of information. He hated big bodies of water so as you could imagine, this would be a little situation for the desiertan if something actually was there.

"Please don't be a giant Lochness monster.." he muttered.

"A cross dress monster? Jeez, what the fuck." Erebus said through disdain and uncertainty. The skies wouldn't act this way because of a monster down below right?

That wouldn't make any sense.

Erebus turned his attention to the clouds, a screeching hawk noise could be heard from the darkened nimbus not far over the mountainside. Erebus could trace his eyes around some sort of shape but nothing immediately distinguishable was coming up.

''WHATEVER IT IS, BE ON GUARD."

With no time wasted following his warning; a platoon of hostile furies phased all around them from sparks of gold and nothingness itself. They were creatures with faces of women, enough to pull a sailor overboard for just a taste of their red lips. Erebus readied himself, invoking a stance he took often. These were just pebbles to a diamond, and Erebus knew they were in for more. He quickly discerned the threat level as B-rank, however... Provided this was Odin's son behind him, and his own reputation as a cold motherfucker.

Erebus showed no fear today.

He was not going to bow to any man, let alone a monster. Still, his powers had shifted around Esperia's matter and dimensional powers. He doubted he was yet ready to cast spells. He'd only experimented with cups of water before now.

"How do I shoot??" He found himself talking out loud again. Unlike his regular routine he wasn't alone, Bryson was at his side. Erebus just hoped he might learn a thing or two about this magical 'mumbo-jumbo' from the new kid off the block. He'd never asked anyone else, what was the harm in it now?

Bryson raised an eyebrow and turned towards Erebus for a second as he muttered. "Not a cross dress mons- Are you slow?" The kid asked with an unamused expression. Then Erebus reminded him to be on guard, so the child turned with a nod and placed his his hand on the gun underneath his cape. There sat a gun he had recently bought from a magic shop. Vash's White Revolver, it was called. As the screeching boomed over the seas, Lil B gulped. He hardly ever fought, but he was great at running, hiding, flipping, and getting away from things. Today would be different. With Erebus at his side, he was sure that no running would be involved. Plus, he couldn't risk looking like a wimp in front of one of his fathers guild mates.

As the screeching beasts neared, Bryson realized that they had the faces of women- beautiful women at that. They zoomed through the sky at crazy fast speeds. Some of the lot flew downward towards the boats in the sea, while a good portion of them came directly towards the the two male presenting people. One of the monsters opened its jaws, being only about 10 meters away from Erebus. Quickly Bryson drew his gun and aimed a few meters in front of his new acquaintance, firing off and causing one of his light bullets to connect with the skull of the beast just before it was able to munch down on his new partner. The creature flailed until it lost consciousness.

"It's not rocket science. Just focus on the area you want the spell to come from to conjure a magic circle. While you're focusing on the area also imagine what the spell looks like. Command your mana to manifest it-"

Just as Bryson finished explaining, one of the creature's used its talons to grab him by the shoulders and threw him towards the sea. Bryson's eyes widened as he aimed his gun towards the monster, firing off another bullet and hitting it in its head. "Shit, shit, shit, shit, shit." He grunted as he began falling. Bryson was horribly afraid of large bodies of water.

Imagination.

It was stupid easy, apparently. Maybe that’s why he could never do it, or maybe never tried? His imagination was so... morbid in life. Erebus has to admit he wished he was on those sands that Blue Pegasus lounged around so often.

Erebus spat, as Bryson was flung over the cliff. Erebus allowed a Fury to come in for a swift attack, to which he met his dagger with the talon, and parried before grabbing the thing’s neck like a blind chicken. He sighed, and holding it at bay, threw a leg over the creature’s back. He thought to make this bitch into a magic broom ride or something, because a moment later and he was running like the Flint-stones, hand squeezing hard enough to break a glass whilst the knees became caked in blood as it was dragged. The bird of prey coughed for air as Erebus took it over the side with him, leaving the other creatures in disbelief.

Plunging over the side...

“Hold on Lil Bro!” Erebus struck the fury on the rear like a Pegasus. It frantically flapped, a facial expression of pure horror on it’s person at realizing the weight of a man was causing them to drop.

Meanwhile, Erebus was lit! His eyes wide and his smile teethy. Coming downward he aimed his hand to his feet. Concentrated. His imagination wasn’t as immense as other people’s so perhaps a ball or a bubble would be a good place to start.

C’mon... With not a second wasted, a bubble materializes under blue light, and thrusted Erebus at high speeds, he extended a hand to Bryson; rocks were sharp, down below. So he reckoned the kid would have some common knowledge.

“You shoot, I’ll fly!”

From the thickets of clouds high above, the Furies came back in their pursuit. Now in droves of dozens... Where were they coming from? That same weird cloud up there from before, or was something bigger at play here?

If Bryson hit the water, there was no doubt in his mind that he would drown. Alas, Erebus was here to save him. The two barely knew each other but of course in this very moment they needed each other. It was safe to say that that alone was enough for the rogue to extend a helping hand. He doubted Erebus actually cared. Something spectacular happened as well. The mage of nightmare flew downwards on the back of one of the horrific avian creatures, conjuring a bubble to propel him even further. The Desiertan grabbed his partners hand and threw himself behind him, finding his place on the Avian bird.

"Thanks! You did it!!" the young boy shouted. "You used magic...but I did expect something cooler and more gloomy!" He laughed. The mission was clear. Bryson would shoot the monsters and Erebus would steer one. Simple enough. As Bryson raised his gun, he turned around to aim at one of the raging beasts frantically flapping towards them. "Wooooooohooooo!" He cheered as they zipped through the sky. This was probably more fun than it should have been, especially since Lil B was much weaker and probably more likely to die than the older man in front of him.

Still, he used his gun and shot the closest creature right in the face, causing it to drop like a crushed fly. "One down." He said aloud before moving his hand slightly to the right and shooting another ones wing. That one fell from the sky too. There were still a few of them left but with Erebus actually using a spell maybe this would be over quickly. "Where the hell did these things come from anyway?!"

Bryson found his calling pretty quickly, The Rogue was fortunate enough to have his aide, specifically now, as Erebus pushed his Fury off the wayfarer spell and balanced himself and Bryson over the large bubble underneath themselves. His dagger would slice through a Fury attempting to ram them from Bryson’s blind spot. Erebus casually dislodged it’s neck from it’s nape.

His attention drew back to the large cloud worth notable mention to it’s mystery. Channeling his magic Erebus pointed his palm upward, he challenged mana through his body, and released an orb of mana in the form of water and bubbles. It fluctuates in rotation and eventually sails meters through the sky to hit it’s concealed target, causing a barrier blue bubble around the Nimbus cloud itself, revealing the form Bean eat has a shadow. The shadow revealed the shape of a large bird inside, a 50 foot bird at that, with an even longer wingspan.

It was a Thunderbird. A rare creature known to live in caves overlooking cliffside’s. They possessed the power to bend lesser species to their will, and were intelligent on a human-level, but their bodies didn’t allow them a humanoid shape to take; so they were never really seen anymore I’m mankind’s future. Erebus found folk tales in Baska about the Thunderbirds that were rumored to live somewhere in the West and yet only now they could see its shape, unable to even gaze on it’s wings. Wings that channeled sparks and light with each flap.

Under Erebus’ water prison, this monster would electrocute itself or drown. Leaving only the mob of the Furies behind for Bryson to shoot down before they could fly high above and choose to destroy the enigma or set it free.

“Ha, so I think I trapped the summoner-spirit-monster-thing. Let’s toast these things and get up there to it. Yeah?”

There were way too many things happening at once. Erebus had suddenly aimed his arm at some cloud, trapping what appeared to be a thunderbird, while the rest of the woman-headed bird thingies continued to come their way. Bryson grunted, picking up his arm and shooting at them once more. One bullet through the eye socket, another through the chest. Erebus was steering, which meant the young hunter was depending on him as much as he was depending on Bryson. However, the creatures were dropping like flies. Soon enough there would be none of them left except for the thunderbird. Bryson was unsure where or why it had come now but he doubted that it would give up any time soon. It was best for Erebus to hold his little bubble prison spell. Speaking of which, it was an odd magic- at least to see the rogue use. He looked like someone who'd have some boisterous ice magic or some extremely strong darkness-type magic but water? Either way Bryson knew not to judge a book by its cover. He was sure Erebus would master it and make it formidable nonetheless. Bryson leaned to the left as the last flying creature neared, shooting it directly in the head. "Looks like that was the last one."
