She sat there, cross-legged atop the dirty ground in the Hargeon alleyway. Vyra and several other men, their central focus all tied towards the small game; four lengthy pieces of wood, leaned against one another to form a small makeshift square. Beside it, two pairs of dice, one set red, the other set blue, and a small bowl that lay beside it all. Within it, a collection amounting to probably several hundred jewels within it. Vyra looked on, her eyes darting between the dice, the wooden square, and the bowl full of jewels. Among the men nearby, their focus similarly shifted between the three, but also to that of Vyra, the player undoubtedly most unlike the rest. Then there was the one other man, the one with the hat, who simply just watched Vyra, a smirk on his face as he leaned over the large man seated across from the young woman. “So beautiful, what do you say? You down for a game? Try your hand at a good night?” The man chuckled as he pointed down to the bowl, knowing full well that Vyra’s attention was most fixated onto that. “What do you say? Try your hand?” He chuckled.

“I mean,” Vyra stuttered a bit, uneasy about the whole thing. She was never much of a fan of gambling, and this there was no hiding that that was exactly what this was. As much as she wanted to reconsider the whole thing, the jewels were just too tempting. “How would this work?”

The man with the hat smiled, leaning over his large companion again and grabbed the two pair of dice. “It’s pretty simple. Two dice you see,” he flipped the dice between his fingers like that of a chopstick. “Pick a color, either red or blue. Then go evens. Or go odds. Here Bo, take these,” he said as he dropped the blue dice in the large man’s hand. “Evens,” he calmly said as he rolled his dice within the circle, the large man also lightly chucking his dice into the square as well. The blue dice came up totaling 11 while the two red dice totaled 2. “Have your number come up,” the man stopped as he slapped his companion against the head, the suddenness of it enabling the man time to reach forward and scoop up both of his dice. “And scoop your dice first, and you win.”

“Just like that? Just roll the dice and grab them first?” She thought that she understood the idea of the game well enough, at least as far as the rules of this game were concerned. But it seemed too simple. Granted, she had very little understanding as far as gambling went, but of what she recalled from overhearing people in taverns in the past it seemed like people were often losing. Far more than they seemed to have won.

The man in the hat nodded, a grimace on his face. “Nothing special to it. Like I said, roll the dice, grab them and hope you’re faster than my little friend here,” he said with a mocking tone as he pat his large friend on the shoulder. “So what do you say? If you’d like even, I can go ahead and let you play the first game for free. What do you say?”

It was tempting. There was no risk tied to playing this game at least once, but that was also based on the idea that it would only be one. She glanced once again at the bowl of jewels. It was hard to say exactly how much was there, but there was little doubt that she’d at least be able to get a few meals and a nice bed out of it.

“Deal.”

With a smile, the man in the hat tossed the two red dice in the direction of Vyra, the young girl catching only one of them, albeit hardly with any sort of elegance. The other fortunately did not sail too far beyond her and with a faint chuckle in hopes of saving face, she shuffled the dice in her cupped hands.

“What’s it gonna be beautiful? Evens? Odds?”

“Odds.”

“Very good. Evens my guy,” the man reached and grabbed hold of the blue dice and placed them in the palm of the large man’s hands, the routine of the motion something that clearly they were no strangers to. “Go!”

With his call out, both Vyra and the large man tossed their dice into the makeshift square. Both of them, as well as the men gathered around, all looked intently at the dice as they fell in place. The red dice came up with a 3 and 4, to which Vyra reached out as quickly as possible, grabbing her dice as the larger man just watched the scene unfold, none of his companions seeming to draw criticism or critique towards the reasoning. Vyra didn’t notice either the man patting the large man on his shoulder in an approving manner.

“So, I win right? I get the jewels?” Vyra did not even wait for confirmation before she had begun to reach for the bowl that lay on the other side of the wooden square. Before she could though, the man with the hat quickly pulled it away just out of range of Vyra.

“Ah ah ah, you think that was actually for these jewels? Heh, girl you are beautiful, but not all that bright are ya?” The man’s tone was cynical, hardly a deviation from that of how he spoke earlier, but none the less it did not make Vyra feel any better about the whole thing. “So, shall we go ahead and play for real then?”

Vyra’s heart sank a little bit. It dawned on her just what it was that had happened. The ‘free game’ that they had given her, it was just a sense of confidence to get her to play. The harsher reality had not quite hit yet until she had been handed the dice to roll again; she had nothing to bid against. She panicked as to just what it was stood to happen if she lost. She had nothing to her name, nothing more than a couple of Jewels. Nowhere near as close as to what was being put up presently as the ante.

“Evens or odds?” The man in the hat asked, truthfully not all that interested as to her option, but more just trying to move things along. The sooner the game got started, the sooner whatever this woman had on her would be his. But judging by her appearance, the dirty look of her clothes, she doubted that there was going to be much on her.

Vyra sighed, “Evens.”

“You’re learning,” the man chuckled as he patted his big man on the shoulder, much as he had done prior to Vyra’s trial game. “Evens. Go.”

Both Vyra and the large man rolled their dice into the makeshift square, the red dice landing on a 5 and 2 respectively. Meanwhile, the blue dice landed on a 3 and a 5. With reactions far greater than what Vyra had expected, the large man had reached his hand forward, nearly covering the entirety of the playing field and scooped up his dice, paying careful attention to not grab Vyra’s dice in the process.

You dumb fool.

“Well. Looks to me like you lose. Doesn’t it?” The man in the hat gave her a dishonest frown as he shook his head, feigning his satisfaction over her loss. “Care to try your luck once one more time? What’s the worst that can happen?”

Just win. Be faster and react better. It’s not hard.

The idea left her uneasy. It wasn’t as though she could just walk away. By all accounts, she had lost, and without any money to her name, there was no telling just what it was that these people were going to accept. Glancing every so often at the man with the hat, noticing his eyes fixated on her far more than that of the game at hand, Vyra worried she knew exactly what the man was going to want. Hearing the man repeat himself with his question, Vyra nodded weakly. “Odds,” she said again.

The man smiled, “That’s the spirit!” Once again, he patted his large companion on the shoulder, “Odds. Go.”

The dice rolled once again. Red dice came up with a 4 and a 3 to which Vyra perked up at and lunged for in hopes of grabbing her dice. But her attempt was cut off by the large man, his blue dice having come up with a 2 and a 1, and the both of his large hands which enclosed onto the square playground, blocking out Vyra’s hands entirely.

Pathetic. Just pathetic.

And in the same fashion as before, the man simply shook his head, a disappointed tisk tisk coming from his lips. “Looks like you lost again. I guess that means we’re done here.”

Vyra said nothing for a moment, her eyes simply staring at the wooden square for a moment, the silence of the whole encounter being a bit odd for everyone. After a moment though, Vyra snapped back to attention, albeit different. It was difficult to quite pin down, but to the men who were watching or involved with the game, it was clear that at least something was a bit different. Especially the man in the hat, who rose an eyebrow at Vyra.

“How about one more game?” Vyra inquired, a smirk upon her lips as she leaned, pressing her chest outwards just enough that a cursory glance of the dice game would inevitably lead stray eyes upon them.

The man chuckled, “Beautiful. You’re down two games already, and I don’t think you got much on you to make it worth a third time.”

“Oh,” Vyra leaned back slightly, tugging just slightly on the ragged clothes of her, exposing just enough skin to suggest a different sort of thing that they could be playing for. “Are you sure I don’t have anything worth playing for?”

However confident the man had been, it was something that even he did not see coming. The timid girl who he thought he could have some fun with seemed gone, replaced by this seductress. It almost made him wonder if this was an act or if the scared girl was simply a ruse. Either way, he was interested to see. “Alright then. Let’s play.”

“Pick your poison, beautiful,” the man coolly said. He wasn’t interested in admitting it, but the demeanor change of Vyra was certainly something that had him far more engaged in this game now. Even more so as his mind raced once Vyra inevitably lost again.

“Odds,” Vyra smirked, flashing her own wicked smile towards the man, catching off guard as he quickly composed himself, chucklingly nodding in approval.

“Very good. Evens, buddy,” As per the usual, the man pat his large companion on the shoulder, indicating to get ready. “Go.”

The dice went out, Vyra’s tossed with the confidence of a winner while the blue dice with the same routine process as they had been before. Across the two red blocks, the numbers 5 and 2 appeared, while the numbers 3 and 3 came up on the blue dice.

The dice lay there for a moment, neither of the players having reached to grab for their winning hands. The large man and all of his companions, even that of the man in the hat, had their attention turned to Vyra, who had “adjusted’ her seating as such to give the men a very candid and exposé glance at something that had completely taken their focus off of the game.

“Enjoying the show?”

The men were left without words, as much enthralled by what they were seeing as perhaps stunned. The confidence spike in Vyra that they had witnessed was one thing, perhaps that would only have been noticed by the man in the hat and maybe one or two of his other associates, but it was not anywhere as candid or blatant as what this girl was doing now. If the circumstances were different, any man – or woman – would have interpreted it as an invitation for some raunchy sex. No doubt that still may have been within their minds, but whatever fantasies they were playing out were cut short by the quick sequence of Vyra, reaching for her winning dice, shutting her legs, and promptly reaching for the bowl and hauling in the jewels that sat casually within it.

“Well, that was fun. Thanks again boys!” Shooting them a cursory glance and a small smile, Vyra began her way out, turning her head once more to give them a final smirk, a state of surprise and confusion upon their faces. She chuckled to herself, satisfied with how she was leaving them.

Once she had departed from the alleyway, it seemed as though everyone had returned to their senses, as though they were locked within a trance. “What the hell just happened!?” The man in the hat asked, utterly stunned at the sequence of events, the demeanor change in the girl, the fact that she was so candid as to flash them, then simply use such an action to pick up the winnings. In the grand scheme, it wasn’t anything hugely significant as far as pot sizes were concerned, but nonetheless, it still made for a more memorable game of dice.
