Perhaps it was a bad thing that Nadine was growing ever more numb to the plights of people in the Crimson Quarter. The more she came to this place for work, the more she was beginning to appreciate the ‘no questions asked’ attitude of clients and their prompt payments. It made the suffering of others around her easier to ignore, and black market jobs all the more alluring.

“The Rune Knights and the King could care less about the corruption here. Hosenka as a whole is too profitable to seriously crack down on, and that fact is why we’re both happily employed tonight. All that I’m seeing here is a legitimate business in need of debt consultation. Am I mistaken?”

Seated in an extravagantly padded chair Nadine stared observantly at Madam Suzumi. These meet and greets with clients were starting to get tiring, but she wondered if these connections she was making could be used later down the road. The rest of the brothel’s office was as needlessly luxurious as the chair the demi-human sat in, and Madam Suzumi’s seat was even gaudier.

The client seemed pleased with Nadine’s assessment of the situation, though; the debtor’s identity was revealed, and a location was given for his current whereabouts. Madam Suzumi made it very clear however that she merely wanted what she was owed. The fact that a mage was hired to hunt down this ‘Monaco Breda’ person should be enough of a warning already. If the owed money couldn’t be recovered, then a more serious message was called for.

“I’ll get it done,” promised Nadine as she stood up from her seat and left the office.

The hotels in the Crimson Quarter may have been flashy, but they lacked the atmosphere of validity similar establishments in other parts of Hosenka held. The clientele and workers both had seedy auras around them for the most part. Just pain trying to get a step ahead by inflicting more pain onto others. The building she had been told to investigate was hardly any different, and the front desk was being unhelpful at first. At least, they were until Nadine informed the worker that Mr. Breda was under scrutiny for counterfeiting money. Nadine didn’t bother hiding her smirk when the clerk chose not to answer if Mr. Breda paid up front in large bills. After that talk she was directed up to room 408 and given a cardkey for the door.

Once she had made her way to the appointed door she pressed her ear against the wooden surface to try and get any hints about what was waiting inside for her. She could faintly hear a woman’s voice inside. It seemed that Mr. Breda had a guest. Using the keycard she was given Nadine let herself into the room and closed the door behind herself. The sound of the door’s electronic lock clicking as well as the heavy door sliding back closed seemed to get the attention of the two people on the single large bed.

Nadine had herself an amused chuckle as she walked in on the situation. The woman with Mr. Breda was dressed in a law enforcement uniform that would be unacceptable by any stretch of the imagination, and handcuffed to the bed was the man Madam Suzumi had described. There was even a gag already in the man’s mouth. Both of the civilians were surprised to see the demi-human entering the scene, but only the female entertainer was able to voice her concern.

“Find another client tonight. I need to speak to this worm of a man, and explain to him the consequences of using fake money to pay the hard working artists of the Crimson Quarters. If he’s already tried to pay you, I’ll let you get a free swing on him before I take my turn.”

The demi-human had another chuckle when the entertainer smacked the man in the cheek with a stick whip before leaving in a fury. As for Monaco, he was frantically trying to tug free from his handcuffs while shouting behind his gag. Grabbing one of the man’s feet in one hand Nadine held onto the man’s big toe with her other hand.

“Understand that I’m only here for Madam Suzumi’s money. I don’t care about anyone else you’ve scammed, Monaco. Do you have her money, in real jewels?”

Monaco seemed very concerned with what Nadine was about to do to his toe, what with the way he stared at her grasp on it. Breathing heavily the man hesitated before nodding quickly.

“Good answer. Do you have it now?”

The man paused again, breathing heavily before slowly shaking his head. He then shouted behind his gag after Nadine bent his toe at an irregular angle, breaking it.

“Bad answer. Now, you’re going to listen as I give you some reasons for why you should pay Madam Suzumi back, every single jewel.”

Breaking a few toes on both feet was just the start. The debt that Monaco had accrued couldn’t be let off with just a stern word. Some of his fingers ended up being bent backwards as well. Since her audience was so willing to remain laying on the bed she gave him several bruises on his body, but was careful not to cripple the man permanently. Monaco Breda was a sobbing, groaning mess by the time she left his room. Nadine made sure to tell the same clerk from earlier at the front desk that Mr. Breda had suffered an accident in his room before leaving.

As for Madam Suzumi, she was elated to hear that her instructions had been carried out perfectly. A dead man couldn’t pay back his debt, after all. Payment was received, and Nadine left the brothel leaving behind another satisfied client.
