Atani

Another day, another quest to do in Baska.

Atani awoke in her room at the inn. She briefly stretched and went to prepare a breakfast and tea to start her day. She wasn't sure what said day would bring for her-- the last time a delivery boy decided that fate for her-- but this time around she aimed to have more control over what she was to do with her valuable time. Although her previous encounter did result in a solid amount of jewels, it was not the type of income she was used to gathering back in Hargeon, though perhaps that was typical of a mage when they started in a new town.

Regardless, Atani knew that the request board in Baska would doubtlessly have plenty of options to choose from; however, considering that the town was a very popular destination overall for travelers of all kinds, not just merchants looking to sell their wares, but mages and adventurers too, it was imperative that if Atani wanted to get the good jobs for herself, she had to arrive bright and early. Thankfully, that sort of thing was easy for the young Wood Elf. She often did the same in Hargeon.

Though she never awoke at the crack of dawn, she still did wake around the same hours of someone with a typical job in Fiore-- and she said typical because electing to be a mage and take requests for a living was far from typical. It was said that only 10% of Fiore's human population was able to wield magic, let alone gain a certain level of mastery over it that enabled them to complete the same type of quests Atani did. Furthermore, of the remaining 90% of humans who were unable to utilize magic, even fewer attempted to quest alongside those who could, preferring to occupy less magical (but still necessary) jobs. Even then, some people who used magic preferred to let it augment their existing jobs rather than let it lead them down a new career path.

But for Atani, she could never imagine doing anything else besides working with magic for the rest of her life. That might have been easy to say for an S-Ranked mage like her, but it was true. Though she could employ her skills in the medical field with ease considering the nature of her magic, she couldn't tie herself down to that.

She couldn't tie herself down to anything for that matter, which wasn't to be surprising. The girl was a Wood Elf after all. Though they were ironically known to stay put within Athalran, it was moreso out of the pure distaste for humans rather than the desire to stay put. Within the magical forest cloaked from the rest of society, Wood Elves ventured to their heart's content. They rarely spent time in their homes, sometimes not even choosing to eat or sleep there in favor of the comfort of nature. Camping out under the stars and cooking over an open fire was not an uncommon practice in her culture. Even when Atani was traveling, doing so was her preferred method of travel. If night fell, she would rather stay out in the open than seek shelter in a pricey inn by the side of the road.

Frankly, being a mage was the perfect job for a Wood Elf like her. Though her kind largely avoided humans as a whole, doing what she did for a living even in the presence of a multitude of humans wasn't all too bad. She was able to pick and choose who she would serve.

Even though she sometimes begrudgingly did quests she wasn't fond of, such as being a bodyguard to the aristocrats of Myras as they selfishly indulged in a trip to the Lower District as a form of entertainment, in the end it was ultimately Atani's decision to do so. It was quick and easy cash. There were some aristocrats who just didn't know the value of jewels. Paying over five hundred thousand jewels to her might have been her equivalent of picking up a cheap dagger from the local blacksmith to tie her over for a job or two. Or maybe it could have been the equivalent of her going to the bookstore and purchasing an entire series to fill her bookshelf. Regardless, the two expenses were not equal in the slightest. For either of those options, Atani still had to save up a little. For the aristocrats, they didn't necessarily have to save up anything, but they had to limit their voyages to the Lower District; they couldn't simply go every day, lest they hired a bodyguard full time, but that was a rare case.

Atani didn't think she'd ever find that sort of money in this old rustic town.

Not that she cared. Atani wanted to feel good doing the jobs she did. She wanted to feel like she contributed to society. If that meant she missed out on a handful of jewels, she didn't mind it so long as she was still able to make a living off of it... And besides, now that she was in Infinity Wolves, she felt far less pressured to retain an absurd amount of jewels. All the members of Blue Pegasus seemed so well off. It was rare to see anyone who looked to be no less than middle class. Of course, in that regard, Atani didn't quite feel out of place, but she did experience an unwanted pressure from the guild as a whole. Whether she wanted to or not, she felt the need to uphold a certain level of grace. Going out in a sweater and jeans wasn't enough; she had to wear a matching set of jewelry. Her elven ears couldn't stick out bare; she had to dress them in earrings.

Frankly, it was tiring. In Infinity Wolves, she never faced that sort of pressure. She could simply express herself the way she wanted to. It was... rather nice.

Though that being said, now there was an entirely new set of pressures that Atani experienced, pressures she knew she would not have had if she chose to remain in Blue Pegasus. But given the choice between the two, the decision was obvious.

What the elf spoke of, it was in regards to the establishment of her guild as a whole. Blue Pegasus had existed for years. Whenever a citizen of Fiore heard that a mage of the famed guild was going to come and help, they knew they were in good hands, just as they knew they were in good hands with Fairy Tail or even the Rune Knights. Infinity Wolves though, they were new. They had yet to make a name for themselves, which meant they had to work twice as hard to prove themselves to not just their town Astera, but to all the region in which their guild resided. Unfortunately, with Eternal Nightmare having a well established claim to the land, that was easier said than done.

But from the looks of it, Atani thought she was doing a pretty good job here in Baska. Whether or not the people would remember her was one thing.

Even if they did remember her kind efforts to help the town, making those memories truly sink in for the long haul was another. No matter how often Atani or any other member of her guild gave their helping hand to the townsfolk, their mark wouldn't be made unless they tried to do what Eternal Nightmare did all that time ago... Which then looped back to the fact that she was certain Baska wouldn't be happy if their guild waltzed in acting like they owned the place. Other guilds might have demanded blind faith from the town, but not Infinity Wolves. If they ever tried to officially make their mark anywhere, it would have to be done right. Nobody should have to worry about their capabilities or trust their motives, hence why before any such thing was attempted, Atani made it her mission to familiarize herself with the surrounding towns. For now, this was only Baska and Astera. But soon enough, she would even venture into Oak.

Oak... She wasn't going to touch that town. Not under the claim of Infinity Wolves at least. It has had a long history of housing not just Eternal Nightmare, but other dark guilds as well.

There was no doubt in the elf's mind that the town already had an incredibly well established black market and underground network that a light guild such as Infinity Wolves couldn't just stand by and ignore. Not without the Rune Knights becoming skeptical of them at least. That said, Atani did not have any intention of disrupting such activity. She was not familiar with how Oak Town functioned in the present day, but she hadn't heard disastrous things about it. In all honesty, if someone were to try and bust whatever system they had going on behind the scenes, it would likely do more harm than good. So in Atani's opinion, it was best to just leave it be.

But Baska? Ah, Baska was the perfect middle ground. It was home to travelers of all kinds, good or bad, light or dark. Most of its quests she felt were more targeted towards mercenaries who in all legality fell under a vague neutral area. If Atani was not part of a light guild, it would be the kind of work she'd imagine herself taking quite regularly. Though that's not to say she couldn't take those sorts of jobs now, just that it wasn't expected of her.

She could take mercenary jobs if she wanted to. Hell, her client would probably be elated to hire an S-Ranked mage belonging to a guild she had to keep up the reputation of. But even so, she was expected to do a lot of good works wherever she went. Or at least, works that were good in the eyes of the public. Legally sanctioned work that received the official stamp of approval from the Magic Council. Because if it was legal, that meant it was good, right?

Well, obviously not, but it was true through the eyes of many citizens of Fiore. There were plenty of those who thought the Magic Council had the peoples' best interests in mind. And for the most part when it came to approving jobs for light mages to take, that was indeed the case. Though Atani had never run into it herself, she was sure that there were some jobs that slipped through the cracks, enabling someone to do 'good' work even when it was inherently bad-- maybe even illegal in some cases. That dubious nature was where Atani herself became uncomfortable with the Fiorian government being the sole facility to process legal quests.

ut alas, what could you do. It was just one of the numerous (and she meant numerous) reasons she had wished Infinity Wolves declared neutrality from the Fiorian government, though that opinion was not shared among everyone in the guild, particularly her guildmaster and close friend, LeeAnn Nakamura. And she understood why. The fire mage had a history with the Magic Council. Both she and her just-a-friend Alex served as Rune Knights back in the day. Breaking from their ranks appeared to be good enough, but not breaking from their alignment with the institution. No, that would be taking it too far, but she digressed. In the end, Atani had just as much biases against the Council being a Wood Elf from Athalran as Lee had for the Council due to previous service to it.

Gods, she was thinking too much about all of this. The original plan was to wake up and head to the Boar's Head to see if there was a job available for her taking. From all this reflection on her guildly position for what kind of job was best for her to take in the present moment, Atani decided she quite frankly did not care.

She was going to take whatever job she felt best suited her desires. If that happened to be one of those legal jobs, then great. If it happened to be something alongside mercenary work, that was equally just as good in her eyes. In all honesty, she just needed something that would pay the bills-- er, not that she really had any now that she lived in the massive building that was Infinity Wolves' guild base, but the point still stood. She would still need money for one reason or another, and considering how much she loved to travel-- Wood Elves were often free spirits with a strong sense of wanderlust-- a handsome amount of jewels to cover living expenses while away would certainly be necessary. Case and point, the room she was staying at now in Baska. It certainly wasn't free for travelers such as herself, that was fore sure.

And so, with all those previous things in mind-- and now with a certain quantity of jewels in mind as well-- Atani finally finished getting ready and set off to the Boar's Head where she knew there would be an entire board full of wondrous jobs for the taking.

Lo and behold, there was the perfect one just waiting to be grabbed. Strangely enough, it didn't even seem to be a request at first glance. Atani had almost overlooked it as some sort of advertisement, but no. Baska City was known for its tournaments. Atani knew that. She had seen many flyers such as this advertised at many locations within the town, but this had some additional information to it. There was someone who was looking for a partner of sorts. One who had just as great of a chance as winning the competition as him, if not even greater.

The plan? They would work together. Not as a dual battle, but as combatants with a pact. This pact would significantly increase their chances of winning, and if one of them did end up becoming the victor, the prize money would be split between the two of them. It seemed like a fair enough gamble for Atani. She wasn't sure exactly how these sorts of tournaments worked, but the grand prize for just a single contestant yielded far more jewels than the elf would have expected. It was certainly far more than what she needed, so she was more than happy to split with this client.

She met him at the Great Baska Rock. The rules were simple: either knock out or kill your opponent. Either way, just make sure you were the last one standing. As a little caveat to that, Atani mentioned that it was her personal policy not to uh... kill anyone. Her client seemed to be slightly disappointed about that, but conceded to her terms. Once that was settled, their series of fights began. They both plowed through the contestants using a combination of martial arts and magic. Her client was booted first, which meant it was all up to her. In the end, she reigned victorious, and the prize money was secretly split among the two of them.
