The sun cast down upon Marigold, perhaps the first real indication that it had become spring, a welcome change for everyone, especially after the rough winter that had previously afflicted not just the city, but all of Fiore. It was always a time in which people looked forward to, for a multitude of reasons. In some cases, it were the simple change of weather, the warmer days and evenings enabling for more congregations, more events, more reasons to be out and about. For the social peoples of Marigold, this was always a great thing, and the high potential to being forced inside not out of personal choice but demand due to the miserable weather that often came with the winter, to not have to look out a window and see the beautiful rays of sun cascading down upon the warm grass rather than the misty hog of winter hovering over the snow, it was always a benefit.

It was not only that though. There was so much more liveliness within the people too as the spring slowly transitioned over to summer, the seasons working in seemingly perfect alignment to prompt everyone to go ahead and enjoy the festivities together. Activities picked up, engagements became more fuller, the restraints that the cold weather brought became far less relevant or something to be as mindful towards. It brought forward a generally happier feeling to the people, and that was only on the social side of things. Even those who operated or sought to start a business could not help but appreciate the change in weather, all of them always excited for what the new spring would have in store for them, and what new ventures and potential profits they stood to make. For them, winter always represented a difficult time, one in which they as much found themselves forced to figure out how to survive the often long season whilst as the same time preparing for what was to come once the snow and cold eventually parted.

It was seldom something that was easily determined and figured out. Much of it had become tied towards proper planning in part, and what was becoming an overall overreliance upon the trading companies to further help them survive. It was much the bulk of what the trading companies profited every given autumn season into the winter, the reliance of merchants from Marigold to Era to even the most scattered parts of Hosenka needing the support and services of the trading companies that had become experts in handling not only the acquisitions of but also the delivery of goods throughout not just Fiore but much of Earthland as a whole. Their expertise and ability to get the required goods for the merchants meant that they could in turn spend more of their own resources towards their survival, lessening the risk that came towards them and insuring that they not only stood to be able to survive on their own, but have inventory going into the spring and summer seasons.

The fresh inventory always lent to a large boom in Marigold’s trade, if even it were a temporary boom, that was all that was needed. Farmers and merchants who prayed that they could survive the long winter would be able to see the benefits of their investments, have money to spend for themselves, not being as trapped or otherwise fearful of the potential damnation that dared to exist within their households had they failed, which while happening somewhat infrequent was always a level of risk applied towards it. But with the surge that often came, particularly for Marigold merchants, rarely had it been the case in recent years save for an isolated case or another. By and large, the people were surviving, if not even thriving, but the boom that was seen would eventually fade until about the beginning of summer when specialized goods would come about and like before, be met with a large boom as well.

But regardless of the season, no matter if it were winter turning into spring or the spring giving way for the advent of summer, neither of the spikes that were met by the merchants and farmers of Marigold matched against that of what came with the true money maker throughout all of the city, the highly regarded theater that dominated all facets of life within Marigold. Truly, if there were ever a business venture that proved itself to be lucrative during select seasons, it was the Theater. While it operated throughout the year, it had been widely known that during the period of winter in particular was considered a slower season, where less focus, less investment, not only in that of time, but also that of supplies, fiscal intrigue, and factors of the like, were being flooded into productions. More often than not, the limited resources more often meant that actors, actresses, producers, writers, these critical roles to the success of any given performance were more limited to those of backups, actors whom had less seniority required, those who otherwise had not yet proven their worth.

It was very often how things went. The runt of the litter gets to eat last. And in the political structure that existed in Marigold, that was not an inaccurate retelling of the situation. People who were relatively new, who had not had a chance for their own breakout performance, or otherwise for one reason or another had come to find themselves struggling and put within a sort of field of relevancy, these were the ones who most looked forward to the winter months. It was a time when the producers had gone home, preparing their latest and greatest productions to pitch during the spring and have performed during the summer, for the actors and actresses to rest their voices and their bodies after having been engaged to the often brutal schedules that they had set for themselves. All with the same inherent goal, to get out of Marigold and venture off to greater stages with more fame and notoriety at hand.

That was the goal sought out by all of them, whether they had the willingness to admit it, everyone wanted to be famous, they all wanted to be wealthy. Nobody was an exception to this idea, and not a single person would have challenged the idea that they part of the reason they wanted to find more relevant and worthwhile roles was because of the chance for more fame. It was what motivated them, and it was what prompted the more successful actresses to spend the winters recovering, a feeling that they were so close that they could afford to not waste their time during the lesser performances. That was the stigma towards the performances that took place during the winter. Underdeveloped, underfunded, acted by second-rate actors, with a mediocre visionary trying to prepare the whole thing. It was demeaning, certainly an unfair assessment towards the people who happened to perform this time, but it was as much sentiment that fueled them.

Though it was infrequent, the winter performances often did result in a significant upswing for some actors and actresses, propelling them into the main spotlight. It was the ideal situation, an actor whom had not had much of a chance save for a few small background parts, getting a chance to start in a more prominent role during the winter, being well-received and getting another, this becoming an effective cycle that would eventually translate to them being a talked about name heading into the spring season, at which point when attention began to start shining onto those who had taken the months off, focus had been cast and was remaining upon the new guy. Then suddenly, the actor whom everyone expected to take off in the more premier performance with someone as their understudy now either found someone else in that role or otherwise threatening to upheave them. It was the nature of the business, and for those who chose to not perform in the winter, it was a risk that they had always seemed to take.

That level of hype, the risk that came with it, the uncertainty, during these first handful of weeks within Marigold, it added a level of excitement throughout it all. There was something in the air, questions and intrigue over whether a known performer was going to be regarded once again as the favorite for whatever the next big performance was going to be, or maybe it would happen to be some up and coming performer who caught everyone’s attention. There was so much uncertainty behind it, much of it tied towards a shift in the political theater – both figuratively and literally – with a growing sentiment of hatred and hostility towards that of people who were not inherently native to Marigold – a sentiment that was also shared throughout by much of Fiore at this point, spurned in part by recent developments that had taken place as well as just a shifting political alignment that had seemed to sweep the country by storm, to the point where it was affecting one of the most precious and protected parts of Marigold’s society, the theater itself.

It had thrown off everything, the way things had typically played out before. No longer was that the case. Performers and crew who returned from the winter expecting to begin on the next new and great performance were instead met with a growing cast of popular actors and actresses that had fed right into the racism and bigotry that had been fueling the theater scene for the greater part of the past season. Top billed actors met their equals, those who were able to draw in crowds with their performances demeaning the people, making them seem less than human. In some cases, it was nothing more than an act, using the performance to elevate themselves, not unlike how many, if not all of them, would have regarded it for being. But for some, it was genuine. Their hate was real, their desire to see undesirables gone from Fiore, they had blurred the lines so effectively between art and honest feelings that it made them the perfect actors to perform the latest foreigner bashing performance.

A cancer, that was how it was described to Vyra, how many had come to regard it as being. While the racist sentiment was becoming more and more accepted and popular, it was not something that was universally felt. Many still despised that it had grown as it had, many coming to find that it was only standing to get worse as time would go, leaving many to wonder if there were much hope to see things changed, to see things improved. There were no certainty behind that, no likelihood with how things had been changing thus far. Each incident was getting more and more obvious that this was settling in as the norm; not just towards the performances that were going on, but also those of the incidents that simply occurred all throughout, there was nothing stopping anyone from further capitalizing on them and eventually leading to a scenario where racism performances was all that Marigold stood to be known for.

How Vyra intended to resolve that though, she had a hard time figuring something like that out. Shutting down plays was always an option, one that had worked in the past, but it also presented a real issue in that it did not seem to solve the problems. She was there, had seen firsthand when the change had begun to come towards where things were now. She had figured it to be a phase, one that would be there for a short bit and then die out. Plenty of people felt the same. Thus, plenty of people did not nothing to try to stop some of the more racist plays at the time from going forward. Though Vyra had tried herself, it did not seem like the impact did much to leverage out the system. When one actor or producer was brought down by some sort of scandal or issue that would befall them, there was always someone waiting right behind them to take up the mantle and then put on their own performance.

Then, perhaps out of sheer luck that the idea came to her, perhaps something that she wished she had thought of, an idea came to her mind that seemed so obvious that she could not help but chuckle at herself. And chuckle at others for not considering this either. Thanks to the aid of a few janitors that she had known while she had been briefly working for the Marigold Theater, Vyra was able to get into a more private part of the area, one that commonly held all of the future casting decisions for performances. Because there were so many performances that took place in circulation, decisions like that had to be made by the production side months in advance, well before any performer was actually made aware of the change. Once filed, they were never seen again until the casting decisions were announced, plenty of time for people to completely and utterly forget about who had what part.

Having compiled a list of names of people whom not only went against this philosophy that was being preached by the people in the theater, but also a list of names of people whom were considered to be more pure actors that were looking for opportunities, Vyra went ahead and began to not only change scripts, replacing racist ideas with those written out by a variety of other producers and writers, but also changed the respective roles. Under what she was filing, there were going to be far less racist actors and actresses, most of those who had built up a reputation for such behavior being limited to more background roles, where their bigotry would be as impactful. Those with the largest following were shelved entirely. It was hardly a perfect fix, one that at the bare minimum would only stand to briefly put a pause to the issue at hand, but it was a form of progress nonetheless. Even if they felt that there was more that had to be done, it could have been agreed that it was the right move.

Vyra’s actions saw some level of immediacy in their success, though much of it depending on what play in question. Some of the most immediate ones that were to begin their casting calls were effectively done with, there being too little time to launch any sort of investigations into whether or not things had been tampered with, but at the same time, once the pattern became clear, the later performances could be checked to ensure that it wasn’t the case. Some were discovered, others were not. Most importantly though, Vyra was not caught as the person who had made the alterations, nor were the janitors that had helped her, having been ignorant towards the situation within the theater. In total, maybe half of the plays that she had tampered with in some form or another had been left in the state that they were, rid of as much racism and bigotry as possible. That still left about half, which still was quite a deal too much, but it was a level of progress that was being taken.
