Ren was minding his own business as usual. He just had his fill of smoked fish and was chilling under a tree. That was until a messenger bird swooped in and dropped a letter in front of him. He didn’t always get letters, but this was definitely not his first. He took the letter and unfold the content inside. It was from one of his previous clients, the one who wanted to turn an old building into a drug shop, but faced a few rat issues. Inside the letter, they mentioned that they found a few clues about their ‘leader’. They believed that it was a mage of some kind, practicing some dark arts or vile experiments onto rats. Whatever it was this person must be stopped and kicked out. They also promised Ren a quite large sum amount of reward, and Ren wouldn’t turn the offer down. Plus he love a good exercise. Then another parchment fell, he took it up and brought it closer towards his face. It was the map of the sewer system. That would be really handy.

The next day, Ren was ready to ‘clean up’ the building. He arrived there quite early in the morning. Who knows how long it would take him, considering how it went the last time he was there. He walked into the building and looked around. It pretty much stayed the same, no changes whatsoever had been done to it. He remembered the stairs down to the sewer system, it didn’t take him long, only a few turns and he found the manhole. He jumped right in, hand on the hilt of his katana. His eyes scanned the area. Nothing. As if it was deserted. Which totally was not the case previously. It seemed like he had to figure his way around the sewer system, thankfully he had the right thing for it. The map his client had given to him, he also came prepared with a torchlight. Since he knew how dark it could get down there. He wouldn’t be able to read the map unless he had some light.

Ren began his venture. Starting with the West side of the sewer system. He turned from corner to corner, shining his torchlight to the dark end of the sewers. It was all empty, until he shone his light to two pair of bright red eyes. What he found was two of what he assumed were ‘mother rats’ from the other day. It seemed like they were not the leader of the giant rats after all, just like what he had suspected. The two enormous rats screeched and rushed towards Ren. He calmly and swiftly placed the torchlight away as he moved his right leg back and bent his knees, while his hands unsheathed his katana and held it in front of him in a ‘Seigan no Kamae’ stance. A white magic circle appeared in between his eyes. The sewer was dark, so there was no use opening his eyes. But that didn’t matter, he could feel every movement around him. He could listen to the wind.

Before the creature’s claws could hit him, the young ronin jumped up. His hands clenched onto his katana as he plunged down, towards one of the two giant rats. It bellowed as the slash connected. But just like last time it was not enough to take the giant rat down. Ren moved his leg back and bent his knees as his arms moved his katana up, blocking the other giant rat’s attack. The giant rat pushed forward, but Ren stood firm. Before he cried out and slashed his blade, pushing away the giant rat’s claws away while damaging it in the process. This was the perfect opening. Ren leaped forward and stabbed the giant rat right in the head. It screeched in pain and raised its body up in response to the damaging blow. His sword was deep inside the rat’s head now that Ren could not simply hop away. So his body followed along, swung up by the rat. He used his feet to kick off from the rat’s head, this provided enough force to take out his katana from the rat’s skull.

One of them was down, one more to go. As he was in the air, Ren placed his blade to his side, a white magic circle appeared on the hilt of his katana. The winds greatly picked up around Ren and in a flash, Ren’s trajectory changed towards the other giant rat. This great speed produced a mild rush around the sewer, producing a slight wooshing sound. While all of that was happening, Ren’s blade sliced through the giant rat. It was a clean cut. Ren swung his sword to the side, throwing off the excess blood off of it before he sheathed it. A metallic clang rang as he did. Only then did the giant rat’s body fell down onto the dirty floors of the sewer. The young ronin looked around, there was nothing else there. Just two giant rats. He could not sense the leader, so he took out the map and the torchlight. He decided to go to the South wing next.

The pathway was not as complicated as he had initially thought. It was actually quite easy to navigate once you have got the routes figured out. Ren did the same thing he did back in the West wing, he shone his torhlight at corners of the dark sewer. Everything seemed normal, nothing out of the ordinary. He thought it would be even more infested than this. Or perhaps he had took out a whole lot of them the other day. Having found nothing, Ren decided that it was time to search the East wing. But then came a few screeches. He immediately kept the map and torchlight away. Both hands held his katana firm. Ren could hear the footsteps already, it seemed that there were a bunch of giant rats coming at him. Similar to the two he fought just now. But something was different, one of their footsteps sounded a bit different than the rest. That was until they were close enough in range that Ren could tell that not only is he facing a group of giant rats, but one that was even bigger, and through its unsteady breathing, Ren assumed it was a more aggressive giant rat.

Ren’s eyes were closed but his ears and senses were open. He could listen to the wind, to the sound of their movements. He waited for the right moment to act. When the giant rats were close enough. He leaped up into the air, before plunging down on top of one of the giant rats, stabbing its thick skull with his blade. It screeched in pain and brought its body up, just like the giant rat before did. Ren forced both of his feet down on the rat’s head, providing enough force to take out his katana off the giant rat’s skull. He found himself falling in the air, he placed his katana to his side. A white magic circle appeared at the katana’s hilt. The winds rushed in and Ren changed his trajectory, with the winds help he dashed to one of the giant rats and landed a blow on its face. The giant rat screeched, it had seem that Ren slashed one of its eyes.

Another giant rat went to strike Ren with its giant claws, but Ren sensed it before the hit could connect. He dashed sideways, before jumping up at the giant rat that attempted to strike him. Ren whirled around in the air, striking the giant rat with his blade. Due to the horizontal arc of the blade movement, Ren managed to take out both of this rat’s eyes. Leaving it to screech in agony. But the damage were not enough to take out neither of the rats. Ren clenched his teeth. It seemed that whoever the leader was, they had sent their best army at Ren. Perhaps Ren was close to uncovering the truth, and that whoever was behind this knew that and wanted to stop Ren. Another giant claw was heading towards Ren. Like before he dodged it by lunging to the side. He had enough of this. He leaped up and striked the blinded rat in the face once more, due to the previous wound Ren managed to strike deeper into the rat’s head, taking it out in an instant.

Two of the giant rats were down. Ren sensed three more, with one of them having a different scent than the ones he encountered before. The next step he took was risky, but it was a calculated risk and he firmly believed that the odds were in his favour. Ren leapt again, but while he was in midair, a pair of claws got him, slamming him onto the floor of the sewer. The impact dealt a lot, but Ren could still take it. He forgot to include one thing in his calculation, the speed of the other rat. The extraordinary giant rat had not done much and so Ren couldn’t tell how it would act. This was what had let the extraordinary gian rat to be able to hit him. Ren stood up on his feet, his hands gripped firmly to his katana, the tip of its blade touched the wet floor of the sewer. He took in a deep breath as he waited patiently.

When one of the rats acted, attempted to strike it with its jaws, Ren leaped up towards the giant rat that he had scratched earlier. He brought his sword up and jabbed it at the rat’s scratched eye. He was able to wound it deeper into the giant rat’s skull, exterminating it. Then he hopped off with his katana. Three of them were down. Two of them before he had to deal with the extraordinary one. But it seemed that Ren was mistaken as the extraordinary giant rat rampaged towards him. Ren was able to leap up before the extraordinary giant rat could strike him. While he leaped, he striked the rat with his blade. But it seemed to only scratched the rat’s thick fur. He clenched his teeth. It seemed that this extraordinary giant rat would prove to be quite the nuisance. The remaining two giant rats then striked at him simultaneously once he landed on the floor, giving him little time to react despite sensing them coming towards him.

The young ronin was launched away, into the walls of the sewer. Now that was a big hit. But there was no time to give in, he mustered his strength and used his legs to propel himself from the wall towards the two giant rats. He let out an outcry as he swung his sword around, striking both of the giant rat’s eyes. The giant rats hollered in pain. Ren then swung both his arms to his sides, white magic circle appeared beneath him and summoned a whirl of winds that smelled like an autumn morning. The winds launched himself up, while also knocking the giant rats away. A wooshing sound reverberated throughout the tunnels of the sewer. It was not always that there was wind down there, but when there was some it echoed away into the darkness. Now with the newfound momentum, Ren plunged down with another outcry as he slashed at where he had slashed the rat before. Piercing through the hard skin and into the skull, killing the giant rat in the process.

Once he landed onto the floor, he felt the movement of the extraordinary giant rat. He managed to lunge away, dodging its strike in time. Ren then said that he was not dealing with the extraordinary giant rat yet, and anger and fury could be heard in his voice. When he landed, he swung his arm again to his side, summoning a white magic circle and the winds that carried him upwards. Then he firmly held his katana to his side, summoning yet another white magic circle along with the winds. With this he dashed midair towards the last giant rat, and swung his sword in a horizontal arc, piercing through its hard skin like the one he did with before. The giant rat fell to the ground with a loud thud that echoed in the tunnels. Ren landed onto the wet floor of the sewer on his feet. His chest heaved, and his breath loud and shallow.

Ren turned towards the extraordinary giant rat. His aura grim and malice. After a momentary pause, both Ren and the extraordinary giant rat launched at each other. The rat’s sharp teeth clashed with Ren’s blade. A loud ringing echoed through the tunnel as the two of them clashed and separated. It seemed that Ren had met its match. But Ren had what the extraordinary giant rat did not. Magic. They both leapt towards each other once again, but Ren didn’t clash his blade with it, instead he swung both his arms to the side, summoning white magic circles beneath him and the autumn winds, it launched him up, enough to dodge the rat’s attack while also knocking the rat to the side. The rat fell to the floor of the sewer while it screeched. Ren took the opportunity to plunge down with all his force put into his blade. Ren landed on top of the rat and stabbed the insides of the rat’s mouth. Exterminating it immediately.

Now the only sound in the sewer were Ren’s unsteady breath. Things turned eerily quiet after the battle
ended. Without wasting anymore time, Ren took out his map and torchlight and went to check the other wings, the East and the North wings of the large sewer system. In the east wing, he found a wall the should not be there. He pressed his ears to the wall. And he could hear the wind on the other side. The map also showed that there was supposed to be a room there, and that the wall shouldn’t be there. But Ren was out of strength to go and check it. The North wing was completely empty, and it was also where he had dropped off from the old building. So he decided that he had done enought that day and climbed out of the dirty and smelly sewer. He let out a sigh of relief once he could smell the fresh air again. It also seemed that it was getting dark and the sun was about to set. The sky painted in a beautiful crimson. Then the man from the other day walked up to Ren and thanked him for all his work. Ren mentioned the wall to the man, and the man told him that he would prepare a team to blow the wall up so that they could check what was on the other side. The man then gave Ren the rewards he deserved and thanked him once again. Ren accepted his rewards and walked away. Itching for yet another nice bath.
