Esperia the Cruel
Despair, to the people of Dahlia it had been something they endured for generations. It was something they learned to carry as a burden, and even amidst despair they could prosper to a degree. The people of Dahlia were a hardened folk, but even they couldn't endure this amount of cruelty.

It had come out of nowhere, the only telltale of its arrival being a sudden tremor that shook the very earth when a large swirling mass of shadows tore through space in the townsquare.

The initial reaction of the handful of guards that were present during broad daylight was obviously one of warriness. Readying their weapons they approached, expecting some sort of creature to emerge from within, or perhaps some crazy cultist had done an experiment gone wrong, but it was neither an experiment or a mere creature.

The portal expanded itself into a massive size, the dark substance surrounding the portal seeping into the soil and twisting it, and then 'it' came.

A giant monstrous fiend, reminding them of the terror the dragonic invasion had caused in the past showed itself. Yet it was not a mere dragon, it seemed far more twisted and corrupted as its kin as the creature roared once, the sound enough to rob even the bravest among them of their courage.

As one of them tried to turn tail and flee another one turned toward his comrade. "Don't run! If we don't stop this monster, then what of the civilians hiding in their houses?!"

Yet at the same time he said these words a sickening sound of a gurgle came from the turned man who fell onto his back, a bloody hole having been carved in his stomach.

"mhmm~ can't run away now~ The people are depending on you~"

A playful feminine voice chimed in response as she stood in front of the spot the fleeing guard had been at just mere moments ago. The other guards were about to raise their weapons at her, but it was already too late.

"gah-" a pained gasp came from the man as his weapon clattered onto the ground, and as he collapsed onto his knees blood started to drip from the corner of his mouth.

The other guard suffered the same fate, spasming on the ground as more blood seeped from both their mouths and eyes alike and while they screamed in agony their metamorphosis begun:

Their bodies dissolved into pools of a thick murky substance, the same color as blood while slowly the masses rose, reforming into grotesque abominations: The monstrous creatures absent-mindedly started to drift around the plaza while the woman stepped toward the dragon and smiled at the giant creature.

"Glad you could make it Sebastian~"

The dragon's eyes gazed down upon her while its wings spread, a single gust enough to send it a few meters into the air while it addressed her.

"I see that it has already begun."

The dragon spoke in a deep masculine voice as his companion gaze toward the spot the portal had been at moments ago. In its place a gigantic tree had started to flourish, the petals on the branches releasing a peculiar looking smoke.

"Mhmm~ The tree seems to be working, now it's just a matter of time before the whole of Fiore becomes covered in its fumes and." she gestured at the monsters. "Become a playground for the others."

The dragon sighed in amusement. "Are you sure about not helping them?" The dragon's inquiry made her nod her head firmly. "Mhmm~ I'm only here for my own entertainment and the results of the experiment. Surely you haven't forgotten about it, right?"

The dragon's gaze shifted toward the moonlit sky. "Either their world, or ours..."

to which Esperia nodded her head with a mischievous smirk on her lips. "Indeed~ So let's prepare a nice welcoming gift for our 'heroes'."

It was only a few days after the event that news reached the capital. The entire region of Dahlia had been covered in the peculiar fumes shed by the gigantic tree that rose in the main plaza. While a few brave parties had attempted to venture toward it, anyone who inhaled the fumes would over time find themselves transforming into the same hideous monsters that were protecting it.

At the same time, the surviving population was forced to either try to escape from Dahlia or remain hidden indoors and hope the fumes didn't reach them.

However, there had been no sight of the ones who started this nightmare. But it was certain: should one dare to try to attack the monstrous tree, then it would be just a matter of time before its creators would come to stop them.

ooc note: people are allowed to react to the events in the aftermath, but neither Esperia The Cruel, or her companion can be challenged unless a raider party is formed.

Additionally: A Darkest Incursion can be undertaken by a secondary party to make the raid a bit easier for the group. This incursion can be signed up as normal for the event and will introduce an optional mini-boss fight at the end.
