DEVILS MAY CRY
Nana sat on a private beach and enjoyed the warm sunlight. As she sat, she practiced her handiwork with her gunblades. She tossed them back and forth between her hands and attempted several trick tosses and grabs. She knew that there were others out there much stronger than her or the members of her guild. The best she could do was constantly improve herself and cultivate her fellow nightmares into something formidable enough to warrant a second thought of hesitation before even considering targeting members of Eternal Nightmare. As she tossed and caught her weapons, the pale of her skin slowly became more sunburned as her whole body soaked up the rays of sunlight. It was seldom that Nana operated in the daytime, much less constantly. She wore a black two piece bikini that seemed to barely contain her womanly assets. Even as she jerked her arms to and fro with her gunblade tricks, her chest jiggled and threatened to overthrow the black bikini top. The reason for today's environment was not exactly a resort or vacation, although Nana herself admitted that treating yourself while working hard, was its own reward. She only hoped that her companion would come to agree with her opinion. Her companion of course was her pupil, Vivi Ramstein. The very fledgling nightmare that her own sensei had entrusted to her. Out of all the nightmares, Vivi had the potential to grow the most. The others were already set in their ways and could only grow so much now. Not to mention that while they were loyal to the guild, loyalty to nana was different entirely. Nana only hoped that her pupil harbored such sentimental shackles that she could share in. Being in a dark guild was sometimes challenging, especially when it seemed like everyone else was out to get you. Nana stopped twirling and tossing her gunblades finally and sat them across her sunburned lap. She looked over her shoulder as she was almost certain her pupil was approaching. Maybe it was the shifting of the sandy ground, or maybe her shadow had given away her position. "Are you ready for some training today? We've had this beach house to ourselves all week. It's about time to be productive." she would say with a half serious and half playful tone. WC-385 WC Total-385

She'd dressed for the occasion, which was a rather rare sight for a woman who had few possessions to her name. Usually she just washed her same outfit on a daily basis and lived with that, but actually having some money on her person meant she could actually afford some clothes beyond her usual fare. She was a lot more modest. A two piece bikini, sure, and red just like her eyes. But she wore a tied sarong around her waist to keep the eyes off her hips. She didn't need the extra attention wherever it might come from.
"This almost seems like it is an excuse for something," Vivi told Nana in answer to her question. "That or you just wanted a change in scenery. I am not entirely sure which makes more sense to me just yet. Then again, I feel like I understand very little in the way of the choices you make, and perhaps that is for the best. It may very well just give me a headache if I tried to follow it all." She dusts off her hands. "I am ready though."

DEVILS MAY CRY
Nana laughed at Vivi's response. Apprehension, suspicion and resigned participation. She wasn't wrong to be wary of her mentor. Nana was just as likely to kick her into a den full of magical beasts, as she was to treat her Kohai with a week's worth of resort paradise. The reasons mattered little, but Nana could always find an excuse if she needed. Her laughter was more out of entertainment than anything, although her laughter was more of a sinister giggle than a loud outburst. Which of course, Nana was sure to have fill Vivi with confidence. "Our training today will actually be quite intense. We may even have to find a different resort house to spend the rest of our time here after the training is complete. I just felt it was appropriate to treat you before some grueling training that you may resent me for~" she would say and stand to her feet. She patted the sand off of her black bikini bottoms and turned to face her pupil with that mischievous yet disarming smile that Vivi had surely come to know. It always meant trouble. For someone. Seeing as her and Vivi were the only two within several miles, it would be quite clear to Vivi that this was not just training.... but a trap. The tall blonde daemon woman now stood and held both of her gunblades in her hands, tossing them between hands with dexterity. She began to move her feet to the left and then to the right as she tossed her gunblades into the air and then jumped to catch them. It was more of a circus act than anything, yet it was always important to train with your weapons to possess maximum familiarity. "Go and retrieve your weapon. Prepare yourself mentally, for we shall fight with no restriction today." she would instruct with a tone of finality that told Vivi there was no room for negotiating. Even if Vivi had tried to run away, there was roughly five miles between their resort and any other populace of humans. If she ran, Nana would be content with chasing her pupil. She didn't expect her pupil would run though. Erebus himself had recommended the woman. WC-370 WC Total-755

"Alright," She told Nana as she came back again. "If we are going to fight then I suppose I will really have to put my back into it. You probably will give me a hard time if I do not, yes?" Vivi dropped her axe head into the sand while she twisted the grip around, digging a hole idly. "Are you planning on trying to kill me too? I am not sure how much of a good show this will be if you are. There is not much I can do to defend myself against your full power, yet. I doubt you will get much sport out of the whole thing if that is how you intend to come at me." Notably, she wasn't discouraging Nana from doing so on the basis of self-preservation, more out of logic if anything.

DEVILS MAY CRY
It was a fair question to be asked, whether out of self-preservation or curiosity. Nana considered it for a moment. If she used herf ull power with the intent to kill, there would be little point to the training. Yet the purpose of the training was to give Vivi a real life combat experience. Going easy on her seemed counter productive. For the moment, she held her gunblades idle and not pointed at her pupil. She would begin to back up however, with her back to the edge of the sea. "If you don't come at me with the intent to kill me, you will be in more pain than simply trying hard." is what she said, giving her pupil a fair warning to not hold back. She would take a low stance if her pupil hadn't began to move already, signifying that she too was ready for combat. Her arms raised and her gunblades crossed in an x pattern as she lifted and pointed them towards Vivi. "I'll try harder depending on how hard you try." she would say. This gave Vivi the power to decide just how brutal the battle might be. This too was a test from Nana. Not just physically, but emotionally and mentally. She would squeeze off the triggers of her guns and two magic circles would appear- unleashing small narrow beams of magical energy aimed towards Vivi. The shots themselves were aimed towards Vivi's lower abdomen. The core of the body was usually the easiest target to hit. Also the most predictable. Nana wouldn't aim for other body parts just yet. The distance between the two combatants would be twenty meters. If Vivi attempted to evade the two spell shots, she would find that the trajectory of the spells would change to chase her. Nana had chosen this specific distance to test Vivi's observation skills. Nana hadn't used her most powerful spells and Vivi was surely accustomed to some of Nana's fighting style by now. At this range, a normal spell shot would prove easy enough to evade simply by backstepping or sidestepping. Nana's skill with her gunblades however easily quadrupled the normal range and speed. While the attacks themselves may do little damage, little amounts of damage added up. The range of Nana's spell shot would be sixty meters and at a speed of fifty meters per second.

"Understood," She replied. As soon as she saw Nana raise her gunblades, which were a bit surprising to see given that, well, Vivi wasn't really accustomed to weapons so unique, she took action. Dropping down to the ground, she touched her palm to the sand, forming a magic circle of her own. She could hear the crack of gunfire go off just as she shot forward in a straight line as the bullets were zipping towards her. She was slower than they were even with her spell, but her goal wasn't to dodge them. She couldn't not from what she had gathered. She was just trying to give herself a fighting chance. Holding her axe against her back, she twisted her body ninety-degrees as she moved to turn herself away from the path of both bullets and only into one. She gasped as the first smacked into her back, making her axe grind into her skin until she felt like her spine was being grated. Her axe took the brunt of the damage, though she could feel it struggling under the weight of the blow. Her stomach, however, took the other shot, making her chest heave from the shot as it blasted her sternum. She coughed and wheezed as she struggled to her feet, her body feeling far more sluggish after the shot right to her abdomen. But she wasn't down, certainly not dead. She couldn't get her body to move any faster than her normal speed, she certainly wouldn't be running again, but she could still stand. Without speed on her side she couldn't close the gap, but she could try a different tactic. She'd have to make Nana move so she couldn't aim at her so easily. She kept moving forward, trying to close the gap just a bit more.
If she could get in range, which while walking was asking for quite a bit, she'd give it a try. Changing tactics, she brought her left hand to her hip before snapping it up in an uppercut, firing off her Arcana Fangs towards Nana, hoping it would force her mentor to change tactics.

DEVILS MAY CRY
It was a common sight for Nana to watch her targets attempt to evade and run away from her attacks. That was when her shots' homing ability would shoot them in their backs. Vivi was somewhat accustomed to Nana's fighting style. That likely gave her an advantage of not being instantly pulverized by Nana's attacks. Like Vivi, Nana was fairly versed in her pupil's fighting style. She knew that to even get close to Nana, she would have to be daring and haphazard. That was exactly what Vivi did. She accepted Nana's attack, embracing the sudden aggressive hostility by her mentor. Nana's eyes danced as her pupil braced herself and did her best to minimize the impact of Nana's shots. Even as she rushed with more speed than she was accustomed to, she prepared a counter attack. It was an attack, a ranged one no less. Vivi was trying to close the distance by rushing and fighting fire with fire- or so the saying went. Unlike Vivi however, Nana had the advantage in several ways. Not just battle experience or gear, but positioning as well. To most, having your back to the water was a disadvantage. To Nana, it was a well timed disadvantage turned into an advantage. Now was not the time, not just yet. Instead, Nana raised the pink on her right hand athat held her right gunblade and pointed her pinky towards Vivi. It was something Vivi had seen before, but not incorporated into Nana's fighting. A magic circle appeared and raised a purple translucent mana shield in front of Nana's body. The size of the shield was small, a mere one meter by one meter- enough to cover half of her body's height but all of her width. It was the very same spell that Nana had used to test Vivi before when Nana's sensei had first introduced them. Nana moved her hand with the shield on it to the side just enough to place her other gunblade outside the shield and pulled the trigger. this time with just one gunblade, she fired another spell shot as her own shield came into contact with Vivi's own spell. Vivi's spell did some damage to Nana's shield but didn't break it. Nana's own spell would go passed the shield and rush towards Vivi as she charged haphazardly. This shot was aimed higher and specifically at Vivi's right upper arm at sixty meters and at a speed of fifty meters per second. From here, she would play defensively and watch from behind her shield as her pupil made her next move. "You will have to get passed my shield, Vivi-chan!"

Reeling her axe back over her back, she knew that the path she chose would probably mean she'd take another shot right to the chest, if she was lucky, but she also knew it may be the only way to hit Nana. Taking one step forward to give herself as much momentum in her swing as she could, Vivi shouted in a rare display of strong emotion. Hurling her arms forward as forcefully as she could, she tossed her axe in a whirling arc as hard as she could towards Nana. Of course, the act was little more than a gambit. Nana could surely sidestep the attack, it was not as if Vivi could throw her axe with the speed of a bullet. Still, it was really her only option. That was impressed upon her rather well when the second bullet collided with her sternum and blew her off of her feet and into the sand. She took gasping breaths as she clutched her chest tight. She could feel the bruise forming across her chest, and there was no doubt she'd be feeling that pain for days after the fact. Wheezing and feeling completely drained, Vivi raised a hand in surrender. She couldn't keep going. While she could certainly take more hits if she needed to, she couldn't make her body ignore the pain, it was way over any tolerance she had. She couldn't even lift her head to see if Nana had let her hit or if she had dodged that as well.
"Damn," She groaned. "I think...I could use some water."

DEVILS MAY CRY
Vivi's sudden abandon to safety for the singular chance to strike her foe was impressive. The difference between the two combatants was quite large, but Nana was not going to show off or berate her student for using such a dangerous tactic. While it was Nana's job to instruct Vivi and assist her in her growth, it was ultimately up to Vivi to decide for herself; how she would fight. Nana had not anticipated that Vivi would throw her sole weapon from her hands. Having taken a defensive stance and watched immediately after firing her last spell shot, it was exchanged with the weight of a hefty axe crashing into her defensive mana shield. The force and the axe itself was enough to break Nana's B Rank mana shield. Her purple mana shield shattered and the handle of the axe clipped Nana's chest as it swung in beneath both of her raised arms which held her gunblades. Nana felt the pain, even gasped slightly for air. Yet the force fo the attack could not depose Nana's footing. It was as if Vivi's axe had hit a mountain and just stopped, thudding to the ground motionless. At the same time, Nana's pupil had reached her physical limit. Nana watched the axe for a moment and thought back to their first meeting. Back then, Vivi couldn't even break Nana's shield. This time she had shattered it. Real progress. Not enough to pose a threat to Vivi's mentor, but enough to beat average mages at the very least. Nana looked passed the axe and back up to her pupil which lay on the ground in surrender only a couple meters away. Nana raised her gunblades and aimed them towards Vivi's position and squeeze the triggers of her gunblades. Magic circles appeared at the barrel tips and released two larger beams of magic. With a range of Ninety meters at Fifty meters per second. Nana was not aiming specifically at Vivi- more so on both sides of Vivi. Her spell shots would land harmlessly on both sides of Vivi's body, creating deep gouges in the dirt. "The old Vivi that couldn't break my shield, is dead." she would say, reinforcing to Vivi that though her gambit had been dangerous, it had been rewarding. With a flash of magic, her gunblades would disappear and she would clasp Vivi's extended arm and aid the woman to her feet. She smiled kindly towards Vivi and brushed some dirt off her pupil's shoulder. "We are fortunate that our battle did not endanger our living quarters. Come. Clean yourself off and then join me in the hot springs to ease those bruises." she would say in an even tone. [End][Exit]

She followed Nana's advice though. She needed a shower and a lot of water. Fighting was exhausting, and dehydration was just another enemy to her. The hot springs sounded even better, they'd help to fix her up...at least temporarily. She would not be sleeping well though, she already knew that. There was no way she'd get a good night's sleep.
"I'll keep walking in your shadow for now," She muttered to herself as she followed Nana. "But I won't stop pushing myself...not ever."
