Kaz left the village behind, he hoped that in leaving them alive that they would keep silent about what they saw. The last thing he needed was the church getting wind of his activities. Not even the magic council were people that he wanted to let know about his dealings. The wind mage traveled out of town and even closer to the main city in the region now. Only a few more churches along the way. He couldn’t help but keep thinking how odd it was to find both daemons and archangel supporters in the same area. What all was the church up to? Probably something he would share with any future partners about the subject. In the meantime, he had to keep his head down.

The streets were more populated than the last place. Long paths stretched out from the city center into the wilds in all directions. He knew which way the church was already and took the path on the left.

He turned down the solemn path. Trees covered the left and the right. Kaz pulled up the collar of his robe. To his left, he saw the people of his past. Akira…Hatsu…the ones that had brought him into the land. Trained him for war. Judina the one who died on the streets alone. All of them gone. To his right, he saw Judith, the mother of fairies with a history of torment. His wife, had gone into the guild of the collective, with the power to change time on a whim. And disconnected from the affairs of mankind. The guild of the phoenix flashed in his mind. All those brave souls lost to time. He shook his head and walked beyond the memories that lingered in his past. The pain that came with it.

He stopped in the middle of the path. His eyes veered over his left shoulder. “You know, if I want, you would never catch me,” he spoke into the world. Eight warriors dropped from the trees. They all had crossbows and swords. Kaz sighed and looked into the heavens, “Byakko, give me strength.” he called to the celestial spirit to carry him through the annoyance of endless combat.

The assassins charged. Kaz stomped on the ground and shot off into the wilds. A cloud of dust trailed behind him, leaving the assassins coughing and wheezing from the dirt. Kaz spun to see and then his back slammed into a net. Two assassins held each side.An electrical current pulsed through the net. Kaz quickly threw his hand forward and launched himself off the net, just as the current passed by.

The wind mag dashed once more and was right in front of one of the attackers. With a swift swing of his blade. Light flickered on the steel and the man’s hand was gone. He screamed and the net collapsed to the ground. Kaz flipped and dashed toward the other one. He pulled out a gun but it was too slow. Kaz spun around it and stabbed through his leg. “can't follow me, can’t fight me.” The wind mage dashed further into the woods, keeping away from their slow advance.

The assailants tried to stay hot on his heels, but the mage’s movements were too erratic

He was born in the wilds. Thrived in the wilds and running through the trees. Two assassins leaped out at either side of the mage. Kaz watched them lunge with blades in hand, ready to pierce through. He stepped on the wind and shot himself straight upward. Beneath himself, he conjured two blades of wind and threw his hands upward. His body rocketed by them. The wind blades slashed off their arms. The mage burst through the tree line and hovered above the canopy. The sun hit his face. The wind rushed by him. He felt unbridled. Free of worry. Free of the relentless march of duty. Even with murderers on his tail…he couldn’t help but revel in the moment of free fall. Everything felt calm. It reminded him yet again of simpler times. How was it that he always managed to get himself caught up? That the same villains continued to plague him and others. Maybe his friends could have…

Kaz could hear the crunch of leaves beneath. The shuffle of bramble that parted ways for his enemies to move in and attack. Why…did everyone have to through away their lives so freely. He spun around seeing the two armless men, being pressed up against a tree. Meanwhile, the rest darted back and forth, making their way up to kaz. They chose to leave their allies in exchange for taking out Kaz. He frowned, “You don’t care about the people that fight alongside you.” He dashed downward and with a flash of his blade, the men were cleaved cleanly apart. Bodies plopped into the earth.

A woman’s voice called out, “Mister there are more. Please come and hide. They won’t stop.” Kaz was hesitant, but he knew if he didn’t evade then he would get stuck in this forest far longer than he wanted. He took a step closer and looked back. Shadows rushed down the path toward them both. The bodies lay on the forest floor. Some still moved while others were clearly lifeless. The woman tugged his arm and the wind mage stepped into the thorns to the secret hatch that led into her family's small cottage. It was there that her husband greeted him and let the wind mage inside.

The cottage breathed wide with foliage and plants bearing fruit. Trees surrounded the home, concealing it in a tiny little grove. A couple of kids played in the dirt near the house and in a stream. A peaceful enough place to remind the wind mage about his home. The husband invited him indoors and said that they had a lot to talk about and a short time to do it in. Kaz reluctantly went inside, but hopefully, these people would have some valuable info. He sat at a small wooden table.
