DEVILS MAY CRY
Nana could not help but chuckle to herself at the ironies of life. This quest was the quest she was supposed to have mentored Akeno in before his sudden disappearance. Now instead of the large burly and prideful man, Nana was to mentor a different nightmare. A hatchling dream maker, but with the potential to become a true nightmare. The tall blonde daemon woman wore her usual attire along with her equipment. She wore her customary black dress. Her long blonde hair hung loosely about her shoulders and down passed her waist easily. Her little companion Spur, clung to her strands of hair and sat comfortably on her shoulder. He devoured several cookies while he and his master waited. Spur was a polite but shy exceed and rarely spoke, yet he was attentive and understanding. He knew how important beauty was to his master. Every time a crumb from his cookies landed on her shoulder, he would gently remove it before continuing his noms. Today was the first day that Nana would begin as Vivi's official mentor in Eternal Nightmare. Nana wished to start it off well. By well, Nana meant throwing Vivi into a deep dark catacomb full of undead ghosts and other apparitions. Most were translucent and barely had any tangible form. Others possessed actual corpses, reanimating them for various reasons... Or even no reason at all. Not all of the spirits were bad. Some merely were confused or regretted their own deaths. Still, they haunted the lands beneath the church and the holy man who ran the church couldn't allow such blasphemy. Nana waited outside the church, sitting on the step and stealing from the shared cookies she had bought for Spur- to which he gladly shared with his master even if she did enjoy picking on him. When Vivi would arrive, Nana would stand but only once Vivi was close enough to converse with. "Are you afraid of ghosts?" she would say with a seemingly innocent smile on her face. She'd never had a mentor before, perhaps it would be something formative for her as the days went on. She'd make the most of that to be sure.
Of course, she wasn't certain what she could be in for with this woman. The invitation to join her for some work was something she didn't expect. She also didn't expect to be brought in so soon for something like this. But, she didn't complain. she took to it with her characteristic stoicism and arrived right on time. Literally, she was very good about that. Not even one second before the bell tolled the hour, she strolled up the path towards Nana and gave her a simple greeting by lifting her hand. When asked the question, Vivi shook her head. "No, not at all. Ghosts can die, so there is no reason to be afraid of them. If something can be killed then it is not frightening."

Nana merely nodded her head at Vivi's response. It was a perfectly logical explanation for ghosts which were still a mystery as to why and how they came back. Some people had irrational fears of ghosts. Nana wanted to be sure that Vivi could operate under the pressure of even scary things. With that out of the way, Nana would stand from her seated position and Spur would greet Vivi with its little white hand and a smile, which had crumbs all over it. "Kew!" it would say in its usual sweet, innocent and cheerful tone. As Nana began to ascend the steps of the church and push the doors open, she would explain her relationship to the priest at the church. "This 'holy man' and I have a bit of a back and forth bit before I do my work. As a priest of gods, he can't tolerate my demonic blood, nor the reputations I've accrued for myself in my earlier days to be recognized as a nightmare." she would explain just before they would walk all the way down the isle between the many empty rows of seats and towards the confession box. Her last bit of words would end just as they reached the confession box. In response, another voice rang out- muffled and more quiet at first. Then the priest exited the confession box and began anew. "Why the gods test me patience by sending a demonic touched to do their bidding, I will never know." he would say and leave it at that for now. He would pause his retort as he noticed the taller shadow following Nana. "And who might ye be, lass? Are you here against your will? Possibly a sacrifice to the spirits below in the catacombs to appease them?" he would ask genuinely, not doubting that was something Nana would do. Anyone who truly knew Nana, knew it was always a possibility. She was whimsical and cruel like that. Erebus had entrusted Vivi to Nana's care however. Nana only wished to make Vivi into a nightmare that spread by fear through word of mouth, from town to town. To make parents and children alike, both have bad dreams. "Drop the bravado priest. If that were the case, there would be nothing you could do about it to stop me but pray to your powerless divinities. be useful for once and explain to Vivi here, about the spirits below your 'holy' church." Nana would say suddenly, losing her monotone for a sneer and sarcastic tone. The priest was speechless for a moment. He was not used to people blaspheming his gods, but Nana always seemed to poke at his faith. Just as he poked at her for being a heretic. He would clear his throat and regain his composure after Vivi had a proper turn to speak for herself. "I see.. Well. There are winding catacombs beneath the church. Wandering and restless spirits tend to pop up from time to time. Some good... Some not so good. Which is why I request the aid of mages from time to time." he would say, glancing up at Nana again. To him, she was anything but a mage. Yet he couldn't deny the magical pressure she possessed. Far above almost any mage he had known. "What you do down there to quiet the spirits is up to you. I don't wish to hear of it." he would say and then turn his back to tend to his faithly duties. Nana chuckled as she would walk away, presumably with Vivi right behind her. "If that man knew half of the things I've done below his church, he wouldn't keep requesting my aid." she would say at length, while leading Vivi to a locked iron gate which led down into the belly of the ground. The tunnels were lined with equal amounts of stone and bones. "You will take the lead in this quest. Use whatever means you deem fit to quiet the spirits." WC-668 WC Total???1,002

She followed Nana into the church, heeding her words carefully and trying to ignore her surroundings. She had been truthful with Nana, she was not afraid of ghosts in the slightest. But she was not a fan of holy men. The mere sight of the priest welcoming them into the sanctified hall made her stop breathing. She watched him like a hawk, feeling a bead of sweat fall down the back of her neck as every word he spoke made her feel all that more uncomfortable in his presence. She was glad when Nana cut him off and told him to stuff it. She didn't want to be around the man anymore than absolutely necessary, and her usual stoicism was replaced with complete silence.
She kept her eyes locked on the priest as Nana led her to the gate leading to the catacomb steps. Vivi did not want any surprises to come from behind her. The last thing she needed was a holy dagger being put between her shoulder blades. Maybe a priest wouldn't do something like that, but she didn't trust that he wouldn't. The self-righteous bastard was likely always looking for an opportunity to make a move, and she wouldn't give him one if she could help it, not a chance. Only when Nana ushered her through the gate did Vivi take a breath. Descending into the darkness, she found herself more at ease there than anywhere up above. Unslinging her axe from her back, Vivi led the way as Nana instructed, taking point and holding her ground as they delved into the stone halls. This mausoleum would not force her back by even a single step.
"How does one attract ghosts?" She wondered out loud. "It does not seem to me that they would be concerned with the same things a living person would be." She tapped her axe on a stone pillar as they walked by, clanging out the metallic sound through the somber hall. "Hello?" She called out, not caring who heard. "Do any spirits walk these halls now? We've come to put you to rest."

DEVILS MAY CRY
Nana had been so engrossed in her 'talk' with the priest, that she hadn't noticed Vivi's palpable reaction to the holy man's presence. It was not until the two women had begun their descent into the catacombs that nana had noticed the change in demeanor of Vivi. Curious but not wishing to pry on the matter, nana chalked it up to apprehension of some kind. Maybe it was the darkness. Maybe it was the overwhelming decaying smell of bones in the tunnels. Anything really. Humans stressed over even the smallest of things sometimes. Nana shrugged her shoulders softly while walking in the tunnel behind Vivi. That was when Vivi asked a most interesting question. One that made Nana chuckle out loud, a powerful echo in the dimly lit tunnels of the catacombs. "Lifeforce. Sound. Memories. Desires. ghosts respond to many different things, depending in their attachment to the mortal realm. Even violence." she would say, adding the last bit to pointedly tell Vivi the obvious. Many ghosts were violent and insane by nature. Who could reconcile with having died after all? Even as Nana said it and implied the cruel yet most practical reasoning, two ghosts slowly emerged from the shadows ahead. One of the ghosts was an eerie silhouette of a man, translucent by nature and barely held any tangible form. He stood on the right. The other ghost was a woman whom had possessed a corpse. The festering maggot filled corpse shambled towards the sounds that Nana and Vivi made. Of course Nana's movements were completely silent. The same could not be said for her speech or laughter however. Down here, Nana was perfectly at home. She could tell by Vivi's body language, that she too felt reasonably wholesome down in the dark dreary place. When the two apparitions revealed themselves, Nana hung back but only by about two meters. She'd allow Vivi the room to swing her axe with ease if she chose. A flick of her own hands and her two prized magical pistols appeared in her hands. She had no intention of hogging all the glory or giving her apprentice a free ride. Yet she had carefully worded her instructions to Vivi to allow the woman to take charge of their mission. That also included giving Nana herself instructions if she saw fit or even considered it. If Vivi had no instructions for Nana, she would remain idle unless attacked. She would remain nearby but not intervene unless she saw Vivi struggle with the undead. WC-420 WC Total-1,422

Giving her axe a bit of a twirl, she stepped forward as the shambling corpse and the ghost came into sight. She didn't need to make a point or show off with this, they were just simple targets that needed to be removed. There was no shouting, no exposition, she was quick and clean. Stoic as ever. Her axe came up from the ground and cleaved the corpse in two, her own strength combined with the power of her battleaxe making it an easy effort to rip old rotted flesh apart.
There was a shower of what she could guess to be rotted organs and dusty bones that quickly turned into little more than ash under the weight of her axe. She looked at the ghost next and scowled. "Will you return to your grave? Or shall I make work of you as well?" She didn't know what exactly the response she would receive would be, and she certainly did not expect what she got. A howling shriek from the man as he lunged for her. Vivi took a bounding step back to get away from his hands, and brought her axe down on his skull. He'd overextended himself, and thanks to the magical nature of her weapon it wasn't going to save him that normal steel might be ineffective. She'd never cut a ghost before, but her axe cut ectoplasm just as well as flesh and cleaved a ghostly gash in his head before he dissipated like smoke.
Propping her axe back up, Vivi looked over at Nana. "There will be more, yes?"

DEVILS MAY CRY
Nana watched as her pupil went to work in an efficient and methodical way. It was smooth and precise, with controlled effort through the weight transition of her footing as well as body weight. Nana could see that the woman was quite familiar with her weight, in terms of length, as well as its reach. The daemon woman had to do nothing herself for the moment, but watch her pupil as she exorcised the unclean spirits. Yet she knew the real test was to come still. not in the way of violence after all. Spirits often came in many forms and with various desires. Not all spirits were bad. "You missed some, Vivi-chan." Nana would say in her cheerful voice to alert Vivi of a straggler in the far back reaches of the shadows down the long echoing tunnels. Just at the far reaches of the shadows, there were two more spirits. These two spirits were unlike the first two. No, this was a pair of a mother and a child. Two apparitions with no substance, wraiths which floated in the air. The mother held her infant child and stayed at the very edges of the darkness, afraid of both the light and its redeemers. "Please! Spare my child!" it would cry out after seeing Vivi exercise the previous two spirits. Nana had chosen this particular quest because evil and innocent spirits often revived here. It was always easy to justify killing an evil spirit. But what about the innocent or ignorant? Harmless apparitions who were simply confused. Nana needed to see if Vivi was capable of doing the darkest of deeds, if she could steel her heart. If not, Nana would see it as something to work towards. Vivi's heart need not be closed off, but simply have the mettle to do what was the barest of necessities. If Vivi couldn't find herself the courage of will of arms to kill the innocent mother and baby ghost, Nana would then act. Her pistols would appear in her hands and in the blink of an eye, two beams of purple magical energy would zoom passed Vivi and eviscerate the ghosts before they could even register their own demise. The echoes of her shots would rumble through the catacombs but there would be no more ghosts. Whether Vivi was able to do the deed herself or not, Nana wouldn't judge her. She would beckon for her pupil to ascend to above ground once more. "Come Vivi-chan. Let's go eat lunch somewhere before returning to the Spire." she would say in her usual boisterous and cheerful tone as if nothing ever phased her. [end][exit] WC-441 WC Total-1,863

She heeded Nana's words then, spotting the ghosts further into the crypt. Clutching her axe tightly, she began to advance. As she walked, the cries of the ghost did not stop her from walking. She was prepared to strike her down, she knew that only then would the spirits of the dead cease to inflict their intent on the world of the living. She could not grant them a traditional peace, she was not versed in such things. But even should she be forced to send them back to the land of the dead in a violent fashion, she knew it was the right thing to do by any stretch of the definition.
"Be at peace," She commanded the mother as she swung her axe with precision. Cleaving the ghastly woman from head to toe, she felt satisfaction as she was granted a last glimpse of the woman she used to be. But as the apparition faded with a last gasp, she turned upon the child...and she paused. She had steeled herself to strike down one begging for mercy, but a child was another matter. She did not know what to think when confronted with this dilemma. A child was purely innocent, yes, but that wasn't the only thing that concerned her. It was her philosophy. Even as she knew it was a ghost, she had always held a soft spot for children. Children were yet blank slates with so much potential, and to harm them was to damage that unvarnished and raw potential in a way that could ruin a person. She viewed children as pure portents of strength if raised right, and so it went against everything she believed to harm one. She lowered her axe, and felt grateful as Nana's bullet impacted and dispersed the ghost. She could not have done it herself.
Turning to face her mentor, she was surprised to see no sign of judgement on her face. Giving Nana a nod, she followed her mentor back through the catacombs, eager to leave a place so dour and dreary.
