“Well, we weren’t expecting to have seen you here, milady. Make no mistake though, we’re certainly happy for you to be here. What can I get for you?” The man’s voice was calm, cool, grateful even. It was not something that one would have expected much to happen to one’s self or business on a normal occasion, but to have it happen was certainly welcome. He stood there behind the counter as he looked upon the woman who had entered into his establishment.

A tallish woman, fair in complexion, with white hair with black highlights, someone who anyone who was anyone had an idea of. Her name wasn’t as common as others may have thought it to be, but her image was certainly known. Some of it out of notoriety, much of it out of admiration. Less so admiration for her own self, but rather that of her father, a man whom many merchants had come to idolize and even go so far as to revere. A man of the people, his image was well-known, much like that of his daughter, a young girl whom many believed would end up following in his footsteps.

It was the expectation that many had, that many still have. The man was one such example of them. He had anticipated great things coming out of this woman, whether it were in the near or distant future, but he expected much.

To see her show up within his store, a rough business that was known for trading information to the highest bidder, something that at times was looked at negatively and coldly, but something that was as much a requirement for the more underground businesses that frequented throughout Fiore, Hosenka included. Her arrival was not something anticipated. It also happened to produce more questions than it did answers.

“What can I get for you?” He was intrigued. Confused admittedly, but that confusion were not enough to deter away someone who had great potential to benefit to not only him but his business. The woman carried influence, whether or not she fully appreciated that fact herself. “Though, you’ll have to forgive me, but I can’t much figure what you may be looking for.”

The woman didn’t seem to give much focus towards the man, instead looking around. Her attention seemed far more invested towards the rest of the location than anything else. This man, there was enough reason to be confident that he would not run any sort of interference towards what she may have been planning, but the same could not be said of the others there. A few looks around and it was clear that things were not going to be so bad, at least not as bad compared to how things could have been. After thinking that she were safe to speak freely, she looked at the man, her eyes focused and intense in their glare. “You deal in information, do you not?”

The man nodded, what almost could have been thought of as a gleam appear in his eye, “That we do. Though, information is only as valuable as what people make of it. What by chance, could you find it worthwhile for?”

A weak smile formed upon her face; the man was coy, but observant. She had figured him a fool that would answer to all of her demands without a single question, but he was clearly more than what she first figured him for. “I’m looking for a way out of here. In silence. Undetected. And I want to end up in Oak Town.”

“Smuggling? Well, smuggling yourself at least. I can’t say that I’m not familiar with the practice, but as I said, and as you so brilliantly brought up, I deal in information. Smuggling is a crime.” The man leaned forward, inviting but also suspicious in its own right. “Do I look like a criminal to you?”

The smile shifted quickly to a small pout. “You think so little of me, I can’t help but find myself hurt at the suggestion. No, I trust that you are an honest man in your trade. Those who deal in information, why would they ever engage themselves in those sort of services?” That word was key. Services. It was key in separating the sentiment of those who would frown upon the trade versus those who welcomed it. Her father would certainly have been in the former category, but to speak of it in that manner, hopefully it would adequately dispel any further doubt that the man had.

“With that said, I’m sure you know someone who could help me, couldn’t you?”

The man nodded, the coded language that the woman was speaking coming through loud and clear. He could not deny it; he was impressed. Twice now he had been proven wrong by this woman, and he had come to concede that despite the thoughts and feelings that people had towards her emulating her father in his beliefs and morals, it was obviously that she were different. “Suppose I did. Let’s just say. Someone like that, who can get you your package from point A to B with the sort of discretion that we’re talking about, my experience is that they typically want to be left alone to handle their own business.”

“Is that so?”

“Most of the time.”

“Most of the time?”

“I can be encouraged to speak on their behalf. Though they are often busy, at times one can be incentive to help deliver a package.” Speaking in code was at times more trouble than it was worth. It was obviously enough of what the woman wanted, that her motivations were enough that she were willing to engage in obviously criminal means to achieve them, but just because the two of them were on the same wavelength did not mean that he could simply lower his guard. God knows it would have been easier if he could.

“Why do I get the feeling that securing such an arrangement doesn’t come without a cost?” She knew what to expect, but sadly it seemed that even the notion of being above drawing things out were not something that could have been achieved.

“Simply consider this. Information is a constantly growing industry, and there is never a shortage of needs that come with it. Now, I like you, and I will be honest I happen to like that you’re not what I expected. So I can make this offer for you. There’s a man who has been causing problems; refusing to provide information, not settling debts. Small things really, but in time it adds up, but more importantly I can’t be seen letting people think that I am soft. Respect is the name of the game. And if people can’t trust me to handle problems, how can they expect me to handle information? You catch what I mean?”

The details were vague, but Astrid understood. Handle things for this man. She listened intently, wondering if there were any restrictions to how she should have gone about it, and as focused as she was, she could not hear anything as to what she should or shouldn’t do. The choice was hers in the end.

There were no shortage of ways that she could have gone about it. To say the least, she were intrigued at how she would have gone about it, including the more cruel ways that swirled within her mind. Influenced by the dagger in her possession, it was impossible to not want to go ahead and act upon the motivations to rip flesh from body. Yet she resisted those urged, as difficult as they ultimately were. But though she was not interested in killing – or more appropriately as much as she did not want to deal with the complications that inevitably were to come by killing – she instead figured it would have been as viable of an option to at least threaten the man. And that was exactly what she had done.

It did not take long to figure what she needed to know about the man, the shopkeeper having given a great deal of insight towards the man initially and it being only a short time before she were able to fill in the remaining blanks. After a quick time, she had enough of a profile to begin her hunt, which only happened to take a relatively short time, much to her delight. Hosenka was a lovely city to be in, no doubt, but there was a sense that she did not want to be here yet. Too much attention, too much heat. It was easy enough for her to end up lost in all of the luster that the city had to offer, only to end up descending into a state of complacency.

She could not afford that.

When she found the man, she finally approached him, wasting no time in leading him into an alleyway under the guise of some drunken fun. But as he began to mess with his belt, it was not until the blade was already to his throat that he noticed the dagger that she had pulled out. It did not take long after that, a few choice words perhaps to get the man’s attention and focus. As if the knife that were so closely placed against his throat were not focus-inducing enough. It did not take much after that.

A choice was given to the man. His life or his debts paid. A simple choice really, one that few would have to give much thought towards, but one that nonetheless it seemed the man had to give thought towards. Perhaps the alcohol forcing him to struggle to think? Whatever the reason, it was inevitable what choice he would end up taking and after a brief time that seemed to last forever, albeit only lasting a short time, it enough for her to take some sick delight towards.

She left the man breathing within the alleyway, some part of him perhaps wishing that he were dead, some part perhaps fearful what could have happened next, especially if he were to cross the path with the shopkeeper again. That would be concerns for a later time and certainly not of interest to Astrid. She had done what was needed, concluded her condition of the deal. All that was left was for the shopkeeper to live up to his end of the bargain, helping her secure safe passage to Oak without either being detected of having arrived in Hosenka or even having left it.
