Personality
Personality: Being from the slums of Minstrel, August quickly learned what matters most: survival. The best way he can survive? Using the weapons he was born with, primarily his good looks and charisma. People rarely care about what you have to say unless it serves their best interest, and using the correct demeanour allows him to find that out by simply being a good listener. A perfectly polite smile causes people to drop their guard, de-escalate situations, and mould the right image of themselves in their minds. His air of confidence, handsome looks, and slightly older appearance for his age help smooth this over. August finds this easy since most people rarely look past what they want to see. Growing up, those who do see past August’s polite mask should be prepared for a personality so cutting underneath that it might as well be a sword embodied. People look at him and see a near-saintly Rune Knight Paladin, a healer, and strategist. August works hard to maintain this image as it brings him great validation.
Beneath that surface, you will find an incredibly intelligent young man with a tendency to be manipulative, smug, and defensive when his mask is dislodged. He's a young man who never stopped being desperate to survive, seeking validation and love from others while fiercely guarding his own heart. He often projects his insecurities onto others, emphasizing how he perceives their stupidity compared to his, how they are easy to manipulate, and how they fall for fake affection. Never August though, he firmly believes he’s always in control, that what he’s doing is right, even when he’s not. He’s a deeply insecure young man who doesn’t know who he really is. Even deeper down, he wants to be what his mask is: a loyal and morally steadfast Rune Knight who’s always trying to help others and do what's right. He’s a mage who loves learning new things, especially involving magic and science. He adores his adopted country of Seven. He’s a devoted servant to his Goddess Athena. And when the chips are down, he will uphold the law as a Rune Knight and protect those he holds dear.
Likes:
- Gullible People: An important part of maintaining his image is finding people who will fall for it. He finds those who easily believe him as easy people to work with and get along with. The lack of challenge does bore him at times, though.
- Intellectual Pursuits: While August doesn’t always show it, he is a very intelligent person. Because of that, he likes to challenge himself mentally and studies complicated magical theories in his spare time, along with sciences. When he needs lighter loads, he instead reads classical literature, historic texts, and religious books. Outside of that, he enjoys a hearty intellectual debate, puzzles, and riddles.
- Athena: August gets his power as a Paladin through his worship of Athena, the Seven Goddess of Wisdom, Warfare, Crafts, Strategy, and Rationality, all traits that August upholds and admires. While he’s not open in his worship, he does love and admire her.
Dislikes:
- Clever People: The more observant people are, the more likely they’ll see right through August, which makes them a pain to deal with since they are less likely to just go along with him. But that sometimes also makes them more interesting.
- Lacking Social Boundaries: August has a very hard time dealing with people who break the social rules he works so hard to maintain, purposefully or accidentally. Most of his schemes involve pre-made scripts and situations, and when people go against what he expects too much, it throws him off his game.
- Losing: Like many arrogant young men, August can be competitive, and nothing brings out his childish side more than losing, whether that be in an argument or a simple game. Losing will get August denying he’s sulking.
Motivations:
- Rune Knights: For his own sake and to help his mentor, August is trying to rise in ranks within the Rune Knights using both his social savvy and his burgeoning skills as a mage.
- Family: August has recently found his blood family, and despite developing conflicting loyalties, is striving to do his best by them.
Fears:
- His Mask Shattering: August has often had his mask falter or even come off from time to time, but he’s rarely had it completely shattered, let alone beyond repair. He fears the day when the world sees him for what he truly is: an insincere, insecure boy.
- Betryal: Being raised always aware of the eyes on him and trained as a politician, August is very aware of betrayal. He’s done it himself and has had it done to him. But not from those he truly values. And he’s not sure what he’ll do if they become the ones who betray him.

Magic
Magic Name: Archive Magic
Magic Element: Arcane.
Magic Enhancement: When looking at a target, the user can see the amount of mana they possess and their exact distribution of attribute points. They cannot mention the number to others since it would make no sense to them, but the user can make perfect sense of the value they see.
Magic Description: It is mainly used by flat screens which are projected into the air, appearing in all manner of shapes and sizes near or around the user’s vicinity, functioning as the main hub for them to accesses whatever information they are attempting to access. Additionally, by simply materializing the screens in a more tangible state, the screens produced become durable enough to be used as a shield, shielding the caster from incoming attacks. In contrast, the screens themselves, without the user’s intervention, are mostly intangible for most of the time, simply reforming or phasing through when assaulted or touched by others who aren’t the user. The exact number that can exist at a given time is reflected on the amount of information the user is attempting to access. It is through these that allows the user to transfer information from person to person more quickly than through verbal communication in a manner very similar to Telepathy.
The context of the information itself can be changed in a variety of ways to suit their needs, typically altering or modifying the information to various degrees. The most basic application of Archive simply consists of handling of information through a number of sources and actions; the most common action is typically sharing whatever knowledge or info the caster has with others. During these instances, the transferring of knowledge that the caster already possesses or has recently gathered occurs instantly, uploading all manner of information, ranging from simple thoughts, combat experience, attacks, etc. In retrospect, any knowledge gained can be stored for later use, accessing it when the information in question becomes relevant.
History
- History:
August Auclair was born in Beaujolais, Minstrel, to a man with money but no sense, and an unknown mother. His father, Cesar Auclair, was a gambling addict who fled from his homeland of Fiore, where his family lived, to his father's homeland of Minstrel to escape loan sharks. Cesar managed to use his handsome face and father's connections to live the high life in Minstrel for a while, mingling with the rich and elite. This continued even after August was born and given to his father's custody.
Unfortunately, by the time August was 6, his father, who was often neglectful, not only ran out of money but was also in incredible debt. August’s early childhood was filled with his father in and out of the house, and debt collectors knocking at their door in the slums of Beaujolais. Due to his father's terrible spending habits, August lived in hunger-filled poverty, roaming the streets in search of odd jobs for food, barely managing to avoid turning to crime.
This situation was mitigated by one of the few things that August’s father taught him; appearances, real or fake, help you get your foot in the door. August, taking after his handsome father, used that to his advantage as a child with a very cute face. Cesar made sure his son kept himself clean and maintained his appearance and personality well in the eyes of society. August, with his cute demeanour and burgeoning magical abilities, managed to get small jobs, keeping the wrong types of people away. The father and son duo lived this way for a while, with Cesar using his charm for often unsavoury means, playing Minstrel's Game, and August using his charm for legal work. They just managed to put food on the table and pay rent.
When August was 10, everything changed. Cesar not only lost at the Game but also the loan sharks caught up to him. He was found dead in the sewer drain, and August, who never learned the identity of his mother, became an orphan. Before he could fully mourn his father, the loan sharks started hounding him, wanting to sell August to pay off the rest of his father's debts.
August didn’t fully understand what the loan sharks were going to do to him, but he knew it was going to be bad and wanted to avoid his father's fate. He hid at various friends' and acquaintances' houses in the slums, but they kept finding him. Finally, a long-time employer suggested something that would save August's life. The old Seven woman, a former Rune Knight who lost her leg and had to retire, ran an antique store just outside of the slums. She wrote a letter on August’s behalf and told him to give it to a Major Aegeus currently visiting Minstrel from Seven.
August snuck out of the slums and headed to the Minstel Rune Knight Headquarters. There, he managed to convince the various officers to let him meet Major Aegeus personally, who read the boy's letter. Doing a favour for a woman who once mentored him, Major Aegeus took August under his wing and spirited the boy off to Seven.
August enlisted in the Rune Knights as a Private at the age of 10, directly under the supervision of Major Aegeus, his mentor. The old Major had long since retired from active field duty and worked as a desk jockey diplomat for the Rune Knights. The man often stayed in Seven but was required to visit all Rune Knight-affiliated countries during the years, taking August with him everywhere but Minstrel, leaving the boy in Seven when he had to return there.
Major Aegeus is a deeply cunning man, a diplomat with great social prowess needed to interact with politicians and royalty alike. Loyal to the Rune Knights, he believes in making sacrifices to maintain order, usually done by other people on behalf of himself. Aegeus is a manipulator who knows how to get his way and is willing to do unsavoury things for the sake of the Rune Knights. He covets power and is working towards his goal of becoming the head Rune Knight of Seven. The Major disagrees with the Rune Knights merging with the Collective Mind and dislikes Konstantin Sokolov and his policies but hides it well. Aegeus did his best to pass on these traits, cunning, and ideals to August over the years.
Over the years, August served as Major Aegeus’s assistant, never rising above the rank of Private but well known to those within his and his mentor's circle. Like the Major, August is polite, charming, and charismatic, learning to dance to the political tune. He greatly enjoyed travelling but loved living in Seven the most, adopting most of the country's culture. Outside of Seven, he's subtle about being a follower of Athena, something he learned from his Goddess, including the arts of strategy, math, and science.
August kept in shape but never favoured field positions, preferring to stay close to his mentor. The years of trying to survive as a child were deeply ingrained, and August found himself ambitious and sometimes cutthroat when carrying out his superior officer's tasks. He wanted to rise in the Rune Knights, but even with his mentor's influence and charm, August was still a lowborn, weak mage with no other personal connections, despite having a stellar reputation within the Rune Knights.
That changed when he turned 18, and an unknown woman requested a meeting with him out of nowhere. Upon meeting her, August was confronted with a noble-looking Minstrel woman with a face similar to his. The woman revealed herself to be his mother and brought a spell that quickly proved it. The woman was the head of the Toussaint family and came to Seven to make August her heir.
She told the young man that she got pregnant with him out of wedlock and had to hide August with his father to keep the boy safe from their family enemies until he was old enough to take care of himself. She told her son that Cesar wanted her firmly out of their lives and promised to take care of August, so she left them alone, and claimed to not know about Cesar’s death and debts until it was too late, and that she had been searching for August all this time.
She showered the boy with affection, telling him how proud she was about being such a reputable Rune Knight, and asked him to return to Minstrel to become her heir. August, seeing as how both his dreams of having a loving family, money to never starve again, and the background needed to rise in ranks came true all at once, immediately agreed.
He received warm blessings from his mentor and headed to Minstrel, which was safe for him now since his mother took care of his father's debts. There, he officially became Jean-Auguste Toussaint and was educated in what he needed to know to become the next head of the family.
August, being an observant trained politician, noticed that there was something the family was hiding and that as a bastard he was often looked down upon, especially by his step-father. His mother was also often very harsh to him one moment, and overly loving the next. Despite the signs and his training, August overlooked all of this out of desperation to uphold his dreams.
When asked by his mother if he could do some tasks in Fiore for the Toussaint family, he agreed, especially since his mentor was currently serving in Fiore for an indefinite amount of time. So, with August firmly believing his star was on the rise, he made his way to Fiore.
