Tsukishima sat in the office of Rune Knight Captain Lionel Luxar, his mind racing with possibilities. He had no idea why he had been summoned. Could the Rune Knights have discovered his true nature as a lich and called him in for interrogation? Or did they view him as a potential threat, intent on neutralizing him before he became a problem? Whatever the reason, the lich was prepared to handle it.

After several tense minutes, the Captain arrived, quickly closing the door behind him. He paused to close the blinds, ensuring their conversation remained private. The room was dimly lit, the flickering candlelight casting eerie shadows on the walls as Lionel paced back and forth, visibly agitated. “Do you know why I called you here?” he finally asked.

I don’t,” Tsukishima replied tersely, ready to summon his servant Lucian if needed. “There is corruption running rampant in the Rune Knights. We've taken an oath to uphold order, and now my men are taking bribes. Bribes!” Lionel said angrily, tossing a folder onto the desk in front of Tsukishima.

Perhaps I’m being ignorant, but what does this have to do with me? I’m not part of the Rune Knights. I was just a hopeful recruit,” Tsukishima said, his skepticism evident. “That’s precisely the reason,” Lionel said, stopping his pacing and sitting down across from Tsukishima. “I need an outsider. Someone who isn’t connected to any of this. Batra, over in Crocus, recommended you. He said you’ve helped him before. You’re the only one I can count on.” Tsukishima sighed, locking eyes with the Captain and seeing a desperation he hadn’t encountered in a long time. “What is it you need me to do?” he asked flatly.

I believe the corruption has spread to my subordinates. I’ve narrowed it down to five suspects. I need you to follow them and figure out who is responsible,[/i]” Lionel explained. Tsukishima leaned back in his chair, contemplating the request. “Why me, though? Why not someone else within your ranks?

Because I can’t trust anyone else,” Lionel said, his voice heavy with frustration. “Everyone is either under suspicion or too closely connected to the suspects. An outsider like you, with no ties to the Rune Knights, is the only one who can do this without raising suspicion.” Tsukishima nodded slowly, understanding the gravity of the situation. “Very well,” he said. “Give me the details, and I’ll see what I can do.

Captain Lionel handed him the folder, relief washing over his face. “Thank you. I knew I could count on you.” As he exited the office, Tsukishima scanned over the contents of the folder. Five dossiers detailed the suspected corrupt officers. The first one was stationed nearby, making it the logical starting point for his investigation. A sense of excitement washed over him, a feeling he hadn’t experienced in quite some time. Tonight, he thought, was the night for a hunt.

Sergeant Aric was the first name on the list. According to the dossier, the sergeant had joined the Rune Knights only a couple of years ago, yet had quickly ascended through the ranks. He was well-liked by his peers, praised for his competence and dedication, but there were murmurs of him being somewhat aloof and distant at times. Tsukishima recalled a brief encounter with Aric during his own initial Rune Knight training, noting the lieutenant's composed demeanor and sharp intellect.

Today, Sergeant Aric was assigned to guard duty, overseeing the gated entrance to the High Gardens. As Tsukishima approached the entrance, he could see Aric standing tall, his posture exuding authority and vigilance.

Tsukishima observed from a distance, blending into the shadows. He noted the interactions between Aric and the other guards, as well as his engagement with visitors. Despite the sergeant’s apparent professionalism, Tsukishima couldn’t shake the feeling that something was amiss.

His behavior seemed normal until Tsukishima noticed a suspicious exchange. Standing discreetly in the shadows, Tsukishima's sharp eyes caught sight of a cloaked figure approaching Sergeant Aric. The figure moved with a purpose, yet tried to blend in with the flow of visitors. As the cloaked individual reached the gate, he subtly slipped Aric a small pouch. In return, Aric gave a barely perceptible nod and allowed the figure through without the usual inspection.

The pouch, small and seemingly insignificant, was obviously filled with a hefty amount of jewels. It was a clear breach of protocol, stark evidence of corruption right before his eyes. Aric’s demeanor remained composed, but his actions spoke volumes about his true character.

Tsukishima noted every detail of the interaction. He observed the cloaked figure's exit from the High Gardens and turned his attention back to Aric. The lich watched as the sergeant resumed his duties as if nothing had happened, his facade of integrity firmly in place. “One down.” he says as he leaves to find the others.

In a stroke of luck, two of the remaining four officers happened to be working together. Private Brennar and his commanding officer, Corporal Galen, were patrolling the bustling streets of the military quarter, which were filled with vendors and townsfolk. The crowd provided ample cover for Tsukishima, allowing him to blend in effortlessly as he monitored the two officers at a safe distance.

For an hour, Tsukishima shadowed them as they made their rounds, observing their interactions and behavior. Everything seemed routine; the officers greeted civilians, checked stalls, and maintained order. Tsukishima began to think this might be another fruitless endeavor. Just as he considered departing, he noticed the duo heading towards a fruit vendor.

It’s that time of the month,” Corporal Galen remarked, grabbing an apple from a basket and taking a bite. The vendor, clearly familiar with the routine, nodded and motioned for the corporal to follow him. "Stand guard," the Corporal instructed Private Brennar, who obediently took up a watchful position.

Tsukishima watched intently as the Corporal and the vendor disappeared behind an alleyway. The Private stood alert, his eyes scanning the crowd, unaware of Tsukishima's watchful gaze. Moments later, Corporal Galen emerged, now sporting a bulging bag of jewels at his side—a clear indication of an unlawful transaction.

Tsukishima’s eyes narrowed as he took in the scene. The vendor’s deference and the Corporal’s casual demeanor spoke volumes about the regularity of this exchange. The jewels were likely payment for some illicit service or protection racket, implicating both officers in the corruption scandal. Blending further into the crowd, Tsukishima carefully documented the interaction. He noted the vendor’s stall location and appearance, as well as the time of the exchange. All of this information would be invaluable to the captain for his investigation.

As he continued to observe, Tsukishima saw Corporal Galen give a subtle signal to Private Brennar. The Private joined him, and the two resumed their patrol as if nothing unusual had occurred. Their practiced nonchalance would have fooled any casual observer, but Tsukishima now had confirmation of their involvement in the corruption.

To what Tsukishima could only believe would be to the Captain’s relief, the final two names on the list were not involved in the corruption scandals. He spent the remainder of the day observing Sergeants Isolde and Seraphina, meticulously scrutinizing their actions. Despite his careful surveillance, he found not a hint of misconduct.

Sergeant Isolde was the first he observed. She moved with a sense of purpose and authority, her presence commanding respect from both her peers and the townsfolk. Throughout the day, Tsukishima watched as she mediated disputes, assisted vendors with setting up their stalls, and apprehended a known pickpocket with remarkable efficiency. Her dedication to her duties was unwavering, and she consistently demonstrated the qualities of a model Rune Knight.

Sergeant Seraphina was equally impressive. Known for her keen intellect and tactical awareness, she conducted her patrol with a sharp eye for detail. Tsukishima followed her as she led a team in a training exercise, demonstrating advanced combat techniques and providing insightful feedback to the newer recruits. Later, he saw her intervening in a heated argument between two merchants, resolving the conflict with diplomacy and fairness. Her commitment to justice and order was evident in every action she took.

As the day drew to a close, Tsukishima felt a sense of reassurance in his work. Sergeants Isolde and Seraphina were the epitome of what the Rune Knights stood for: integrity, dedication,
and unwavering commitment to the protection and well-being of the citizens. They were everything a captain would aspire for his subordinates to be.

As he began to head back to Captain Luxar’s office, Tsukishima prepared his report. He detailed the activities of Sergeants Isolde and Seraphina, emphasizing their exemplary behavior and the absence of any corrupt practices. He also included the damning evidence against Lieutenant Aric, Corporal Galen, and Private Brennar.

When Tsukishima finally sat down with Captain Luxar, he delivered his findings. “As per your request, I have thoroughly investigated the five officers. I can safely say that Sergeants Isolde and Seraphina are not involved in the corruption scandal in any way. Their conduct is exemplary. However, I have confirmed that Lieutenant Aric, Corporal Galen, and Private Brennar are involved in corrupt activities. Here is the evidence I have gathered.

Captain Luxar reviewed the documents with a furrowed brow, nodding slowly as he absorbed the information. “Dammit!” he exclaimed, slamming the documents down on the table. His body trembled with anger, the confirmation of his suspicions igniting a fire within him. He took a moment to collect himself, slowly moving to the window with his hands clasped behind his back, staring out into the twilight.

For a few moments, silence hung heavily in the room, broken only by the distant sounds of the bustling city. Lionel's shoulders heaved with deep breaths as he struggled to regain his composure. Finally, he turned back to Tsukishima, his expression a mixture of determination and gratitude. “I will cleanse this corruption,” he declared, his voice steady.

Your findings are crucial in accomplishing that. On behalf of all Rune Knights, I thank you for your invaluable help. This organization stands for justice and honor, and we will not let a few rotten apples tarnish the bunch.” He paused, allowing the weight of his words to sink in. “I’ve arranged for your reward; it’s with the receptionist. Your efforts deserve recognition, and we are grateful for your assistance. I hope this is not the last time we work together. Your skills and integrity are precisely what we need in these challenging times.” Tsukishima nodded, understanding the gravity of the situation and departed to collect his reward.
