The Sylvan Fay

Late Summer, X795

Holding her arm halfway up, palm facing the cloudy sky, Atani pooled a small amount of mana to create a barrier above her head, shielding her from the rain. Freshly enrolled in Amaforth Academy, she didn't have any classes to attend that day, but she figured it would be best to get a lay of the land, so to speak.

It didn't take her long to discover the College of Restoration. Like all the colleges in Amaforth, it was very distinctive. It was composed of several white, spiral-shaped towers. Many were rather small and scattered around a circular chasm. In the center of the chasm stood one much larger than the rest, which she supposed was as good a starting point as any.

Arriving at the edge of the chasm, she saw there was no direct path from one end to the other, just ones in between the smaller towers eventually leading to the central one.

She knew she could have flown straight to the main tower to bypass the winding path across the chasm, but for the sake of exploration, she took it by foot as intended.

The first thing Atani noticed was that campus seemed to be relatively quiet. This was not a bad thing, per se, as the reclusive elf quite enjoyed the peace, but for an academy as prestigious as this, the College of Restoration appeared to be somewhat underpopulated. Of course, she was used to healers being a scarcity, particularly compared to the vast number of mages who were better suited for combat. But even so, seeing how few students were physically on campus, it put things into perspective. Now she understood why the administrator had been pushing the College of Destruction-- if there were so few students in this place to begin with, the likelihood of her finding someone who meshed well with her magic was that much slimmer.

Upon arriving at the central tower, Atani could see that it was more populated with students than the smaller individual ones, but not by a huge margin. At least things looked a little more promising now. Her fingers were crossed though that this was an unusually slow day-- she did enroll at the tail end of summer, after all. Though she didn't know the typical turnout of summer classes, she had heard that winter semesters tended to be particularly busy.

Rather than asking a fellow student for advice, for she didn't want to interrupt anyone's studies, she sought out the College of Restoration's office where she hoped to find at least some information regarding classes, the curriculum, professors, etc. While the secretaries there did give her a decent place to start, there was much she had to decide for herself when it came to coursework. She took a look at the classes she was eligible to take.

She was, admittedly, at a rather strange spot in her schooling. Though she had never received a formal education in the intricacies of magic or the arts of healing, she was an exceptionally talented mage. Typically she would have had to prove this through an assessment of sorts-- one she wasn't sure she could pass given the current state of her magic-- but her Rune Knight files more than covered what the Academy needed. It left her being able to start off with some advanced courses; however, she knew that in order to perform well in those, she would have to take some of the basics.

Twirling her quill, she poured over the list of classes. Healing 101? Pass... but Basics of Elemental Control? That one could prove to be useful. Paired with Advanced Healing and Intermediate Scripts, she felt she was already at a fairly decent baseline to begin her studies.

Three classes was hardly a complete schedule. Nonetheless, it would do for now. There was always the possibility of cross-studies... perhaps something offered by one of the other colleges. Her mind kept going back to Destruction, but no-- no definitely not that. She could feel a wicked smile growing in the back of her mind from Yuan. She would consider those in time. Eventually when she did, the College of Destruction would not be anywhere on her list, but in the meantime she would focus on her healing studies.

Submitting her classes for registration, Atani left the main campus and went in search of her dorm. She had selected a solo one close to her classes. It was not in one of the white towers near the chasm, but it was still close by. Entering the building and going to her dorm, she found it was rather small, but it would serve her purposes; she hardly needed anything grand for short-term studies.

Settling down for the night, Atani let her mind wander, only for her thoughts to be interrupted by Yuan's taunting voice.

"You really think this will work?"

"It's worth it to try."

She could feel Yuan rolling her eyes; the goddess was overconfident. Of course, she might have thought herself to be appropriately confident in the matter, but Atani knew she wasn't going to let Yuan succeed. Though the goddess had been coming close as of late, she had done well enough keeping her at bay. Once she received help from scholars, from those who knew her magic inside and out, she was confident she could make some progress. The quantity of this was admittedly uncertain, but anything would be an improvement from where she was at now, and if she could attain enough control such that she was no longer at risk for harming others, then this whole endeavor would be a success in her book.

Early Autumn, X795

The first couple weeks of classes came and went. The professors were fine enough. The coursework was not all too challenging, though for now the focus was more on theory and less on application. The hands-on content would come soon enough, however, and hopefully then she would be able to see some real progress.

There were a few different techniques she learned about in her various classes-- ones primarily centered around focus and control. Breathing and meditation she knew all about. Chakras, those she knew of, but she had never put them to use for herself, not consciously anyway. There was some theory there about the flow of mana, though again that was only theory. There were many models cultures used to describe the mystery that was magic and not one was stated to be definitively correct. In all likelihood, just as every being was unique, so was how their magic manifested.

All she needed to do was find something that worked for her-- something that worked for both her and Yuan. The longer she dwelt on it, the more she thought perhaps that had been where she was going wrong all this time. She had been practicing techniques she knew worked for herself and with Mórinna: two elven entities with deep spiritual connections. Their physiologies, as different as they were, had more in common with one another than they did Yuan's, at least on a magical level.

So... she just needed to find something that worked for an ancient Sinese Illuminian goddess. One that just so happened to be warped by the Void. Who had their divinity gradually stripped from them for centuries. Who in order to survive, needed to fuse with a voidling.

Shouldn't be too hard, right?

Maybe the College of Destruction wasn't looking so bad now after all.

Mid-Autumn, X795

Moving further into her classes, Atani had begun to finally put theory into practice. At first, she was met with difficulty. Not because of the difficulty of her spells-- no, they were really quite simple-- but because of her fear. Her fear of losing control was holding her back, and at first this didn't seem obvious to her instructors who assumed she just was not as skilled as the Rune Knights made her out to be, but there was one who caught on. And the day he did, he pulled her aside after lecture.

The professors were not deeply informed on her story; they were merely given her capabilities and the baseline reason she attended Amaforth in the first place. After confiding in the professor, explaining the true nature of her magic's abilities, something clicked. She could see the cogs turning from behind his eyes. He may not have had firsthand experience with her situation, but he was already coming up with a plan.

While it was his belief that she made the right decision in joining the College of Restoration, she would potentially benefit from a colleague of his at the College of Obscuration. Coincidentally, they too, had elven ancestry and were more involved in some of the more niche sectors of the arcane.

Rather than signing up for one of their classes, with a recommendation from her professor, she was able to sign up as one of their pupils for independent study. Once they heard of Atani's situation, they were more than happy to assist.

It was strange having so many people who were willing to assist her. Usually she was the one doing the assisting, and even when she did need help, she found it hard to ask for it. And yet, the people at Amaforth, they were so ready to help their students bloom into fine mages, even when their situations looked grim.

It was strange, but nice.

Late Autumn, X795

Her studies with the mage from the College of Obscuration... Things were slow at first, but soon enough, she felt she was able to see some real change. Not only was it reflected in her studies with the mage, but in her healing classes as well. At the beginning, her feats were unreliable at best. Sometimes, she would execute a spell flawlessly. Others, she would choke-- not because of any lack in power, but because she could feel her magic beginning to lose control. She would refuse to let her spell go any further. But after a few weeks of these private studies, these incidents had lessened in frequency. In fact, she had improved to such an extent where she could feasibly drop the intro course on elemental control, but Atani ultimately decided against it. It was best to see it through for who knew, she still might pick up a thing or two.
