There was a buzzing of quiet energy in the clearing as the two teams came together at the edge of the dense forest. This wasn't any ordinary hunt; rather, this would be a full on test of strategy and skill. Ulyssia hung back at the edge of her team's circle, arms crossed, gaze sharpened. Beside her sat Jasper calmly, his white fur glowing like diamonds in the morning light. His piercing blue eyes scanned the treeline as if he was already piecing together their plan.

The rest of her group, who were a couple of lean hunters and two bulky fighters--were deep in discussing strategy, tossing ideas around like they were some sort of battlefield council. Ulyssia kept her silence and didn't interject. Naturally, she didn't feel compelled to partake in their dicussion, but this also wasn't about teamwork for her, this was about regaining the power and strength she had lost. She was a seasoned warrior and hunter, the college was simply providing her the lessons she needed to tap back into her skills. Jasper gave a low, soft huff, almost as if he shared her thoughts.

The rules were simple: both teams would head into the forest, and the first to tag every member of the opposing team won. Somewhere out there was a glowing orb that pulsed every so often, sending out faint soundwaves through the trees. Grabbing the orb wasn't required, but it could be a useful distraction or bait, if you were sneaky enough. The werewolf already had her own plan, and it decidedly didn't include her teammates.

"We stick to the shadows," she muttered, crouching to meet Jasper's frosted eyes. "Forget them." She nodded toward the rest of her team, still mid-debate. "Their intentions are pure, but...they will just slow us down.

Jasper gave a rumbling growl of agreement, licking his chops. The timer started ticking and Ulyssia tossed a glance over her shoulder at the remainder of her team. "Good luck everyone," she said flatly, then melted into the forest with Jasper following close behind like a pale ghost in the underbrush.

The trees seemed to fold in around them, like living creatures themselves. Darkness danced across the forest floor above them. Ulyssia moved silently, her movements as smooth as Encan rivers. Jasper took point, his nose twitching as he picked up light scents, Ulyssia's nose picking up the same. Their plan of action was hunt quietly, isolate the others, and then strike fast. The rest of the team could fumble in any way they wanted. Still, Ulyssia was not worried.

Ten minutes in, Jasper froze. His nose lifted to the air and his ears twitched. Ulyssia dropped into a crouch, scanning ahead as her own nose picked up a scent. Through the undergrowth, The Dharga werewolf saw two figures from the opposing team. They were hunched over talking in low voices, gesturing towards the faint glow of the orb up ahead. Plotting. Planning. They didn't even know they were being watched, and they wouldn't even get the chance to get the orb.

Split and flank she signaled, gesturing with two fingers. The snowfang wolf darted left, disappearing into the dark, while Ulyssia moved forward like lightning herself. The couple that lay ahead of them had no inkling what was in store for them. One dropped to a knee and peered at tracks in the dirt, while the other watched their back. They were wary--smart, even--but it wasn't enough. Jasper struck first, leaping out of the brush with a deep snarl. The guard whipped around, going for his training dagger, but Jasper was too fast. He knocked the man off balance, snapping playfully at his arm while the poor guy scrambled to stay upright.

The second hunter panicked, bolting for the trees, but Ulyssia was faster. She surged forward, tapping the woman's shoulder with the blunt end of her spear before she could take another step. "Tagged," Ulyssia said with an almost embarassed smile, her voice gentle and cool. The woman groaned, clearly frustrated.

Jasper let out a victorious bark, stepping back from his target. The two tagged players sat down in defeat, muttering to themselves. Ulyssia and Jasper disappeared back into the trees without a word. Two down. Two pairs to go.

The forest was quiet, but Ulyssia knew better than to drop her guard. Jasper kept up the lead, nose low and ears swiveling. A faint rustle to the right and Ulyssia froze, hand tightening around the spear. Jasper sniffed- a low growl building in his throat.

Another pair.

She signaled Jasper to hold, barely moving her fingers. This duo was moving fast, their steps deliberate as they headed toward the orb’s glow. One carried a net probably to trap opponents while the other had a training bow slung over their shoulder. They looked confident, and that confidence was about to cost them.

Circle The Hailstar gestured with her hand. Jasper disappeared into the shadows, his white coat dissolving into the forest almost immediately. Ulyssia remained still, her body tense as to not make a sound. When the moment came, Jasper was a blur of white, bursting from the trees with a snarl. The archer yelped, loosing an arrow that the magical wolf easily dodged. As their attention snapped to the him, Ulyssia struck. She darted forward, her spear tapping the net-wielder's side before they could react.

The archer spun too late, fumbling with their bow. Ulyssia stepped in close, catching the bowstring with her spear and pulling it down. "Tagged," she said, smiling warmly as she stared them down. Jasper padded over, wagging his tail like he was thoroughly enjoying himself.

"Four down," Ulyssia said with a grin. She gave Jasper a quick pat on the head. "It appears to me that our team is not the best at this game. Let us finish this."

The last pair proved to be more of a challenge. Time was running out, and the orb pulsed faintly in the distance, glowing like a beacon. Ulyssia guessed the final duo was using it as a lure, hoping to ambush anyone who got too close. It was a solid plan. But not solid enough.

Crouched behind a fallen log, The Dharga looked around the orb to see that there were two figures just lingering near the thing, one with a shield and the other holding a spear. They obviously were ready for a fight to claim the additional points for obtaining the orb.

Ulyssia smiled competitively. "We will give them one."

She moved wide, circling as Jasper stayed low and quiet. The pair didn't notice her yet. Their focus stayed locked on the orb and the open ground around it. Once Ulyssia was in place, she blew a shrill whistle. Jasper erupted from the brush, his sudden appearance starting the pair. The shield-bearer stepped forward, raising his defense as Jasper feigned left, snapping at the air to keep their attention.

The spear-wielder turned, and that was all Ulyssia needed. She stepped in from behind, her spear tapping the shield-bearer’s unguarded back. “Tagged,” she said, her voice ripped through the momentary chaos. The spear-wielder spun wildly, swinging at her, but Ulyssia sidestepped with ease. Jasper lunged low, forcing them off balance. Ulyssia moved in for the finish, tapping her spear to their shoulder. “And you are out.”

The game ended with a howl of triumph from Jasper. The last pair sat back, muttering curses as they admitted defeat. Ulyssia glanced at her own teammates as they shuffled out of the trees, empty-handed and looking more than a little embarrassed.

"Good Job," she said dryly, her smirk making it clear she didn't mean it. Jasper barked, his blue eyes gleaming with pride. When the game master called out their team as the winner, Ulyssia gave Jasper an approving nod. They didn't need anyone else. Together, they were unstoppable.

[ END ]
