Overview

Town: Baska is a lively location, loud and boisterous in its day to day activities as citizens barter for their goods, and warriors test their mettle to prepare for the annual tournament. Located along a backdrop of mountains, the merchant town is home to around 7,500 people, around 250 being permanently stationed Rune Knights and another 500 being residing mercenaries. Baska has a robust history that goes back several centuries to the very beginnings of the nation of Fiore and still hosts some of the oldest ruins in the land including the Vaizel Rock, the Giant’s Tear Ducts and the ever terrifying Burial Catacombs.

Currently the town serves as an important training and trading location due to it’s rather modest size and location in west Fiore. While Oak Town definitely dominates the region as the major city, Baska serves as an entrance into the region being located relatively near the Seighart mountain range and being the first town travelers pass through on the way to Oak. As such the town as a booming market that also hosts an annual flea market for many travelers to buy and sell their gems and junk. Being a minor town, it lacks a Lord and Lady but instead has a residing Captain-Commander and his platoon of Knights to serve as regional leadership instead.

Surroundings: Nestled in between the Seighart Mountains to the north and east, and the Vaizel plains to the south and west, Baska is primely placed along the Vaizel river the Marteen Railway to provide a comfortable locale for the natives of the town. With a humid continental climate, the town enjoys a warm growing season that it uses to provide food for the town’s inhabitants. Being nestled between the mountains and the plains, the town avoids the rain shadow the Mountains cast towards the north and instead enjoys abundant rain and snow all year long. There are no obvious natural protections for the city, so it instead employs a permanent force of Rune Knights to police and protect the town instead. Due to the Captain-Commander enforcing a strict tax law, the town boasts some of the best infrastructure in the region with its pristine railway and maintained roads.

Politics: Being a smaller town, there is no Lord or Lady, however the town does instead have a Captain-commander that oversees all disputes and events. The Commander may also place certain districts under the control of his Captains if he feels that region does not require his oversight. This leads to these areas often being patrolled by squads of Pages and Apprentices accompanied by Seated Rune Knights. Outside of policing, the politics of the town mainly remains between the larger merchants who often times bribe the local Captain overseeing their district. Large scale merchants will often also employ mercenaries that reside in the town or pass through to shake down smaller merchants or guard their shipments through or out of the town.

Economy: Being a merchant town, Baska’s entire economy relies on its trading sector, as such larger merchants often have unchecked power within the city. Farming, textiles, and blacksmithing also play a minor role in providing goods to travelers. Due to being located in between the Seighart Mountains and Oak Town, the town also employs a growing hospitality sector that brings in a modest amount of money every year. Due to the Marteen Railway recently being built through the town, goods and services are more easily transported to their destinations than they had been before.

Culture: Baska is a rather rowdy town, being a major market before Oak and after Seighart, the town literally resonates with the nearby mountains to create a sort of rumbling roar that can be heard for miles around even though the town is relatively small. Being of humble beginnings, many of the denizens still maintain the traditions of the town such as an annual growth and harvest festival, and the annual flea market. However the largest and biggest attraction would be the Vaizel tournament, often pulling in warriors from all around Fiore, the Vaizel tournament is hosted atop Vaizel Rock and is a four day festival that eventually crowns what is called “The Champion of the Rock.”

Another annual tradition is the Homecoming Festival; hosted just after the harvest festival, the Homecoming Festival takes place within the Burial Catacombs where individuals will attempt to navigate the dark maze within and collect an artifact before safely making it back outside of the maze. The festival often claims lives due to the magical wards within preventing any light source and the various winding routes that lead to dead ends or pitfalls. Children are often told folk stories about naughty children being lead into the Catacombs as punishment and forced to find a way out as atonement for the crimes.

Guilds: There are no official magic guilds within the town, however it is home to many mercenary and merchant guilds that provide protection from price gouging that normally occurs to individuals looking for work within the town.

Locations

Residential District: Located off to the west of the village proper is the residential district. While a majority of the denizens stay within the town proper, most of the farmers stay within this area as it has the most land area for harvesting crops.
Baska Station: Located a bit aways from the town, it is serviced by a wagon trail that brings goods and people too and from the railway. The railway connects it to Oak further to the west and Crocus to the east.
Town Center: Most of the citizens stay here. Located within this area is also the town’s City Hall as well as Marketplace and hospitality district. The Captain-Commanders Quarter’s and the Rune Knight Barracks are located within the eastern district.
Church of Baska: An old style building. It was built on the side of the cliff that sits over the town. Service is held weekly by the High Priest.
Marketplace: The main trading location in town. Many stalls line the area as the citizens of the town barter their wares. The annual flea market is hosted here.
Boar’s Head Tap and Merc Cavern: Located near the Vaizel Rock, Boar’s Head serves as the town’s gathering center for the citizens and merchants. It also serves as an Inn for travelers and also hosts the town’s mission board. Just don’t eat any of the food there, the locals say it’s horrible.
Vaizel Rock: The secondary attraction aside from the market. The Vaizel Rock stands as a town spectacle while also hosting the annual tournaments.
Market District: Located to the east of the Vaizel Rock and just below the Giant’s Tear Ducts, the Market District is home to all of the Merchant Guilds as well as the major stores that aren’t located within the Town Proper Marketplace. Due to their location on the hill, many consider the Market District to be the defacto head district since the Great Merchants can look over the city from their shops.
Giant’s Tear Ducts: Once a working aqueduct/waterfall, it has fallen into disrepair due to the town using the well now instead of the run off from the Vaizel River. Now serves as the entrance into the Burial Catacombs.
Catacombs Entrance: An illuminated hallway reveals an impressively paved mausoleum for the dead. Further down the stairs, light is effectively snuffed out due to the wards and enchantments on the site. However from the entrance the visitors can see a clear slab with several inscriptions and rules for the Catacombs written down.
The Catacombs: Pitch black and massive, the catacombs were dug deep into the mountainside and twist and wind in various directions. Inscripted in the stone are several wards to prevent light from being seen unless accompanied by a specific item held by the town’s Priest. Magic is also not allowed to be used as the inscriptions sap the mana right out of the spell being cast. The Catacombs have at least four known floors and an unknown number of floors that have yet to be discovered. Death is possible if entered without either a guide, or escape rope.
Catacomb Crypts:The only illuminated areas within the Catacombs. Crypts are considered safe zones and are the only things visible in a corridor if an intruder happens to enter within a certain distance. Magic is allowed within the crypts, however if a spell is cast into the corridor it will fizzle out at the barrier.
