Eva sat down on the table of a rather famous café in Orchidia. Being a town famous for its natural and herbal resources, Eva had learned from many sources that within the whole town, this specific café had the best coffee as well as tea. That morning, Eva sat there with a cup of tea, a book laid open over his crossed over legs. She had arrived in orchidia a couple of days ago for her modelling career and got somehow had thoughts about getting involved in something that Eva would normally get into. But there was something that was intriguing Eva and she wanted to take a look at it.

But at that moment, she was completely free from all sorts of work; both as a model and as a rune knight. She had decided to spend the whole day relaxing, reading books, and lazing off somewhere. Hanase san had left her all alone for the day to attend some meeting that Eva didn’t want to bother knowing. None of it made sense for her anyway. The sky was clear and sunny too. Maybe it would be a great day. Maybe, she was going to meet someone from her past. What a mysterious day, it seemed.

Victor was at a loss of words. Orchidia, while a small town, had many hotels and Inns. He couldn’t even tell where he could meet his sister. The first place he visited was of course the Rune Knight’s office in Orchidia but he had gotten booted off the place by some scary looking lieutenant that didn’t tell him anything. Now he was walking around the town, still trying to find her sister. He tried asking whoever he met if they saw the ever famous model Evangeline but no one gave him answers. They all knew her, but no one knew where she was.

He decided to simply go around and just get something to drink. The sky was clear and the sun wasn’t too hard on them here as it was in Hargeon and Magnolia but having walked for a long time, he was starting to sweat a bit. He started towards the same café he had heard about through some intel. Apparently it was famous for their herbal tea and other drinks. He looked around, spotting the sign and walking forward until something platinum blonde caught his eyes. That hair and those amber eyes. He could not have made a mistake on this. “Sis?”

Eva almost dropped the cup of tea she held in her hands. In front of her, only a few meters away stood her younger brother, Victor. She slowly lowered the cup onto the table, closed the book that laid open on her lap and slowly got up. “Victor?” she asked. What was he doing here? What was this boy who have had everything thrown at him since birth now want to do with Eva? It didn’t make sense that he would actually follow her there. Then, was it a coincidence? Did that mean that maybe her father was there with him as well?

Eva’s body began trembling, out of fear or range, she didn’t know herself. With her teeth tightly clenched, Eva began breathing heavily as she pushed the chairs aside, dropped some uncounted money on the table and ran. She was a coward for doing that but she did not want to face her younger brother like that. She wasn’t prepared and had no idea of what to do. Eva knew that her younger brother was not like the rest. He liked her. He actually thought of them as family. He was the exception to all the rights in her head.

Victor’s mouth parted to form an ‘O’ as he finally found his sister. When she stood up so carefully, eyes filled with so much confusion and fear, Victor felt his own heart break. There was a grave feeling of helplessness that suddenly took over him. He tried to take a step forward but decided against it as he didn’t want to scare her. She obviously recognized him, her voice calling his name. He wanted to cry, he wanted to tell her how much she was missed and how much he wanted to fix all the wrongs that happened in their past. Whatever problems their parents had didn’t have to bother them now.

When she turned around and ran, his feet finally moved, his will unrelenting to let his sister that he had finally found after a long time to run away. He ran after her, trying to pick up his highest speed to catch up her with all his might. “Sis! Wait!” he called out, finally grasping her right hand and pulling her back. “Sis! Please stop! Why are you running away from me?” he felt tears threatening to form at the back of his eyes but blinked them away in desperation.

Eva felt herself being pulled back by a sturdy hand that stopped her from moving. When did her little brother grow up so much? She wondered as her eyes fell over his own amber eyes, almost a carbon copy of hers, which was yet again a copy of their father’s. He looked pained and opened his mouth as if to say something but closed it again, as if he was lost in a sea of so many responses he had ready for her but now he couldn’t choose. When he asked her to not run away, she stood still. It wasn’t like she wanted to run away. It was more like she didn’t know how to go around with this matter.

“Victor…” she trailed off, sighing. There was no point in running away anymore. “Victor, let’s talk,” she finally gave in, grabbing his hands and pulling him off in the direction of the hotel room she stayed in. This was a family matter that they had to discuss and take care of and she didn’t see why it should happen in the middle of the street. “I know what you probably have to say. But wait, let’s just go somewhere quiet first”.

Victor looked shocked. He didn’t think that his sister would agree to talking so easily. But it still made things easier. When she grabbed his hands and started leading him forward, his memory backtracked into those moments that he would grab on to the long skirt of his sister and she would lead him around the house all the day. They were never allowed to meet each other much but there were times that they both ended up in each other’s presence. In those times, Eva would sit quietly to a corner while he accompanied her. They said nothing on these days, even their young minds knowing that it wasn’t allowed.

“Sis, why have you never, not even once contacted us?” he asked her, his hands balling into fists. He knew that she wouldn’t answer him until they reached somewhere they could talk without anyone simply passing by listening into it but he couldn’t help it. There were so many questions he wanted to ask but all of them simply fell away even before it reached his mouth now. He didn’t know what it was that he wanted to say first and that if his sister was even going to answer all his worries.

Eva sighed. This boy had not grown up even one bit. He still had the habit of following her around no matter how much she tried to lose him. When Eva had grown up enough to know reason, she had already known that there was a huge difference between him and her. For one, he was the son of someone her father now cared for instead of her mother. Secondly, just the fact that he was boy gave him special preferences. And thirdly, he was the son of the woman that had destroyed her own mother’s life. Yet, not once, not even once had she been able to hate him.

“Shh, stay quiet,” she scolded him, dragging him into the hotel she stayed in and up her room, ignoring all the weird stares she received. If those idiots would just get their head out of the gutter and look at the two of them properly, they would easily be able to tell that they were siblings. Once they were inside, he pushed Victor in and closed the door behind him, sighing as she took her bag off the shoulder and threw it on to her bed. She sat down on a chair. “So, what did you need?”

Victor followed his sister around, not bothering to utter a single word right after she had scolded him. It was always like that and he couldn’t help but feel a smile creep up to his lips when he thought of all those times he would go find her and she would scold him but in the end, she would just accept the fact that he was there and take care of him. Her sister was a weird kind of person. She hid herself so much in many layers of character masks but never realized herself that she was a much better person just the way she was.

He sat down in front of his sister back in the hotel room. It was nice knowing that his sister still lived comfortably. Well, she had to be so since she worked hard as both a model and a Rune Knight. When she sat down and asked him what he wanted, he felt his lips go dry. “Sis, won’t you come back home? I know it is difficult for you but won’t you please consider coming back home? It has been years. A lot of things changed, too,” he tried to reason, gulping as he realized Eva was starting to get angered.

Eva felt outraged. How dare he came all the way over here to remind her of a useless past she was trying to forget and then just invite her back into a house she had walked out of? Eva didn’t want to hear the rest of it anymore. Truth to be told, she never really hated her brother as much as she made it sound like. Whatever problems she has had, she knew it was because of the messed up relationship her mother and father shared. It was their fault that they decided that they were in love and got married but she was the one who suffered a lifetime of ignorance and humility.

“I don’t want to hear this. I’m not going back to that house. If there is nothing else that you may need with me, you can leave,” finally removed all of her masks, her eyes staring coldly down at the young boy that she called her younger brother. She didn’t hate him, but his dream of having a complete family with her included was simply going to remain just that; a dream. Eva didn’t want to go back to that place that still clenched at her heart ever again.

Victor sighed. He knew this was going to happen. He already knew that his sister couldn’t be seen reason in that manner. He was aware of how much she had suffered at their home, especially under his mother’s hands but, despite truly wanting to get their family back together, it wasn’t the reason that Vic wanted Eva to come back. He was sure that she knew this too but Eva was not a normal person.

“Sis, you are misunderstanding me. It is true that I want to get all of us to live like a family again but that’s not it anymore. You are aware of how you are missing your memories before you were three, right? I mean, normally it is normal to not remember much as a child but you have no memories, right? Your mind is a complete blank about those things, isn’t it?” he asked her, scooting closer to her with his chair. “Sis, I have reason to believe that something happened to you while you were three. My father avoids talking about it, my mother still screams bloody murder when I mention it and isn’t it strange that father had changed out each and every one of the Venderbilt family servants after your third birthday?”

Eva looked at him, wide eyed. What was he talking about now? How did he even know of this? Wait…was that the reason that he was looking for her so intently? She wondered, her eyes searching Victor’s for some clue as to whether he was joking or not.

“You…,” her voice trailed off, mouth suddenly getting dry and words getting stuck in her throat. “How did you know about all that? It is true that I don’t have any sort of memories from before I was three but what does that have to do with anything? What exactly are you trying to say, Victor?” she asked him again. But she couldn’t believe it that he knew so much about that. Eva never talked about her memories with anyone. She was never even in a really good relationship with her father or step mother. But Victor was right. Something did happen when she was three and this something had left a deep scar on the whole of Vanderbilt family and this something was most likely the reason for her mother’s death as well. “So what are you suggesting?” she asked, curious as to what he was trying to do by bringing all of it up.

Victor smiled. Finally, she was starting to see things his way. Vic was truly glad that his sister was now interested in the matter. But it was not something he was going to explain to her. No, instead, he decided that she would have to understand it for herself. “How I know about it is not the problem, sis,” he answered her, shaking his head. “The problem is what we are going to do about it. If I’m not wrong, the time is almost here, right? You haven’t been feeling the full powers of your wind magic, now have you?” he asked her, knowing full well what the answer would be.

He got up. “Sis, come back to Era. Come back home. There is something in there that you need to see. I can’t say anything more and even if you tie me up and ask me, I’m not completely sure of the situation either but I know…I know that all the answers lie back in that home,” he sighed, placing an envelope down in front of Eva and getting ready to leave. He placed a hand on the door handle and clicked it open. “It was nice seeing you again, Sis. Hopefully, we will be meeting soon again.”

Eva stood quietly, watching her brother leave after giving her so many questions and a simple envelope. What was it that he was trying to do? No, Eva had a feeling that it wasn’t him. There was something he was trying to fix and his sudden appearance and the way he had presented the issue and everything seemed like he was silently asking for her help.

She sat down again, this time taking the envelope he had left her. She ran a finger over it, opening the seal to find…money. There was a small note at the end of it stating her mother’s name. It was all too strange now. What was Victor’s connection to her lost memories and now her mother’s money? She didn’t understand but she knew where she would have to go to figure it out. Eva never thought she would ever go back again but it seemed that the Vanderbilt family was not ready to let go of her again.

She threw the envelope on her bed, getting up and walking over to her mirror. She hadn’t told her little brother nor had she acted like it, but the truth was that…Eva’s magic was completely gone.
