She approached the farmhouse to announce her arrival to Jim. He quite appreciatively directed her to the barn where he kept all the tools she'd need for the job. She entered said barn and collected the hoe as her tool of choice. It was lightweight and easier for her petite frame to manage. Rinni then approached the field and proceeded to run the hoe along the ground in as straight a line as possible. She proceeded to follow the same pattern for several hours along 20 or more rows of soil.
Wiping sweat from her brow, she peered up at the sky. The sun was beating down on her brightly, a stark contrast to the cool breeze. This spring weather was perfect, in her opinion. It wasn't too hot nor too cold. She enjoyed days like today. At home, her parents were proud of her for working so diligently and making her way in the world. Her brother, however, chided her for helping such a lazy farmer do basic farm work. He insisted it was Farmer Jim's job and not hers.
Maybe he was right, but in the meantime money was money. She needed work, and he paid well for a farmer. Then again, growing up poor often meant any little crumb of jewels was a lot in her eyes. She just wanted to do something she enjoyed, and make her family proud at the same time. This task accomplished both. She enjoyed working hard and helping others; her parents enjoyed the satisfied smile they received when she returned home after a job well done.
After several hours of endless tilling, Rinni took a short break. Farmer Jim was kind enough to bring the girl a glass of lemonade. To be honest, she was surprised he hadn't provided her with a cabbage smoothie to drink. Graciously she downed the cool, refreshing beverage and returned to work. It was exhausting, and she was drenched in sweat, but it would be worth it, she was sure. Besides, she had gotten this far, right? Might as well finish the job.
As the sun was setting in the east, Rinni stopped to admire her work. It wasn't perfect, but it was finished. She returned the hoe to the barn and then went to Farmer Jim for her reward.
