Masami
神懸
No, they've got it wrong. Masami waved two of his hands in front of him, as well as his head that indirectly told the two lion statues that they were, in fact, in-correct. "You are not Minamoto...?" asked the lions—both of them—their (stolen?) voice collided into one, or was Masami imagining it? The statues stood still in their place until one of them's necks stretched out to Masami, like a snake, and it was as if they were going to eat him. The child—the prey—had flinched; "You felt like him," then, they withdrew their body to become completely mobile, like a real lion rather than a still, stone statue. When Masami turned to a direction, noticing that the chochin-obake had also felt the fear that Masami had, it was too late and the lions roared at it, causing it to run (or hop) away. "What do we do," asked one lion, "if he was related to Minamoto by any means, we'll be in trouble. We can't devour the poor child, can we?" devour...? Can Masami become devoured in such a state?

He kept his mouth shut, knowing that he only had to pass through the gate, but the komainu had stopped him from doing so. Masami remembered Zeami's tone of voice when he said that Masami did not have enough time, so he had slightly panicked when he realized that the more time he spends in this one spot, the more mana he consumes. But, if he spoke... what would he even say? "Alright, we'll let you pass in safer conditions," how bad were the least safest ones? "Come over here, child; you've come for the cure, right?" there, Masami would nod in answer. "You can speak, we won't bite," sure.

One of the lion's paws grabbed Masami's whole arm, then pulled him towards the second lion's mouth, where its' tongue pulled down and held out what seemed to be a tiny wooden hammer, tiny enough for Masami's hand to grasp. A kendama, he thought, and he was right. As he was told, he held the kendama's handle, first letting the ball drop down. "Why did you choose such a childish toy?" well, neither the other lion nor did Masami even know; both of the lions spoke in a single (stolen?) voice and Masami could no longer identify the personalities of either komainu. The tama can't even touch the ken... even if he wasn't told an instruction yet, Masami instinctively tried to achieve a grip, but he kept failing; is the toy rigged? "Oh well, Minamoto used to like this thing. Just achieve one grip, then we'll let you pass," just one grip? It should be easy—at least, it should be, not unless they did something to the toy.

"You did something to it," he had the guts so speak, realizing that no grip is achievable in the toy's current state. The komainu, both of them, had looked at each other. "Did you do something to it?" asked one of them, and the other shook its' head, "Maybe you did," then, the other shook its' head to answer; now, both of them were continuously shaking their heads—both of them immediately stopped the annoying motion. One of them stretched a paw out to grab Masami's dominant hand's arm—the left arm—and pulled him closer. "Let's see... hmm, we are too noble to cheat," at this point, Masami started to find the two lions as silly creatures, rather than noble. Too noble to cheat, huh...? maybe they just didn't know that they cheated, maybe.

"No can do," they said, "Minamoto probably did this, but not unless you achieve a grip, we won't let you pass... like orders! Yes, we were only told to do this," somebody else's orders, huh? Trying to shrug complaints from the back of Masami's head, he tried to achieve a grip. He knew how to play this game ever since he was a kid; the kendama had fifteen parts, and most of them were related to each other—known as cups, that is what they were called. He held the handle properly, but no matter how many times he tried to bring the ball to hit the handle's ends, it kept being directed to the opposite direction. With enough failures, the komainu decided that they can no longer control their laughter and burst out into humor, slightly upsetting the kid. "I don't think you two were ordered to laugh at me, too," Masami said after turning both of his hands into a fist, clenching them while pouting directly at the two lions—they still continued to laugh.

Hopefully, they weren't tasked to stall and waste Masami's time. "Go on, go on," they said, and so did Masami according to their words. Ugh, perhaps I can use some magic just this once... perhaps? Spirits no longer try to approach Masami, it seems as if the lions had repelled them from doing so; however, they have held the kid captive, so that wasn't such an optimistic approach to safety, either. Hopefully, this attempt doesn't bring a bad impact to both the spirit and the physical realm, and Zeami's voice (despite being used by the two lions) wasn't present to tell Masami that he was allowed to. Thus, he stretched his arm to the side and formed a magic circle by the tips of his fingers; it felt like an actual disc, which then dispersed into different particles. The lions watched this, "What did you do?" they asked, and Masami continued his attempt to finish the game that they made.

Tap, tap, tack, looks like it worked. "I just fixed the toy," bantered Masami, as it was no joke. When he made an attempt to finish a grip, the ball is no longer being repelled from the handle, looks like he can complete this in a few seconds... just a single grip, right? Masami usually didn't like the easiest grip, but he had no time to waste. He bended his knees when he swung the ball, holding the handle by its' smaller end, then rose when the ball did so – quickly, he caught the ball using the "cup" and lowered down once more so that it won't bounce off of it. "The easiest grip, you should be able to let me pass now," the komainu also didn't specify which type of grip he should do, I am also not the best player, so he'd grin at the lions, holding the kendama back to them, then the lions looked at each other.

It would have been better if they specified what Masami should exactly do. "You should have made the spell stronger!" one of the lions' paw hit the other in the head... Didn't they say that they were too noble to cheat? That was an accomplished mission, then. The lion swiped the toy off of Masami's hand, "Fine, you may pass," they said, being hit once more after they spoke. "You crude lion! What would Minamoto feel?"

"Who is this Minamoto?" it didn't look like Masami spoke at the right time; neither of the lions were willing to tell him anything at all. "I will not ask for an apology, but I want to know my relation to that man," however, he had no choice. Both of the lions turned back into stone statues in a blink, such as the "no time to waste," Masami had no more time to stay in this spot. It looks like the temple wasn't so far away from the first torii gate in the first place?
