The day after Noels grand assistance with the merchandising of various goods in Myras a councilman had made a complaint to the union; namely that some of their goods were unfairly tariffed - citing their monopoly on the market. This of course was a diplomatic move most likely initiated by several aristocrats that had made a small business exporting these goods. It was true; the union Noel assisted in setting up had manage to gain a monopoly over the market. Alas his assistance was once again required for the union to continue thriving. As usual, Noel had been drinking out all night again. He wanted to improve his resistance against booze; seeing as he usually has a hard time keeping up with his girlfriend Venus. While idly staring at his ceiling, half-awake and also hungover as hell, he'd hear banging upon his hotel door. His stay in this town had quite garnered the attention; but one could wonder if that was the attention he was searching for. And with such reputation, any Joe and Smit could bang on his door. Unlikely that it was going to be a request for an autograph; his fame didn't outweigh his in fame enough.

Noel invited the person in - the union boss, who found Noel laying on his bed with a really weird angle didn't look surprised when he found him in this state. He knew of his antics. The union chief began explaining the problem they were facing to Noel. About how their position on the market might have monopolized some goods; at least it was perceived this way by the law. The union boss looked quite worried about the impact. By now he represented sixty full time employees. They started out with five just a few weeks ago. The growth would have outpaced them were it not for how the union was composed.

So the union leader was given an ultimatum. There were two choices that they could make. Choice one being that they can modify their prices as they desire; option two being that they can only raise it to calculate inflation. Going with option one meant that they were no longer granted an 'innovation budget', something Noel ever so cleverly setup during his previous request (where he convinced the local government to give small failing merchants a budget to innovate their approach and instead go for manufacturing). This was something they based their initial business off of.

Noel was starting to understand the complicated situation a little bit more over time. His hangover was impacting his ability to critically think; he couldn't judge the situation properly. He let the union leader know this, and invited him for a coffee at the bar. An Icebergian coffee; something a friend from his former guild had learned him to appreciate. The glass has a tall neck, and they gush in a finger of whiskey among with some other obscurities.

Noel put on a shirt and brushed his teeth while his guest waited in the lobby of the hotel. He quickly put on his pants and run downstairs where he'd meet the chief at the bar seats. By signaling with his hand, the Blue Pegasi mage let it be known to the barman that he wanted a drink; and then he ordered two Icebergian coffees. Popular to contrary belief, they were not served cold. The boss of the union explained the situation again to Noel. This time, his brain, his engine - it was given enough fuel to start. It stalled though, so after a few more seconds and a big gulp of his icebergian coffee it finally was kick started. His ability to critically judge a situation in a ruthless business man fashion was making its way back in to the room.

Unbeknownst to the client, he was already aware that this might happen. When giving someone a chip into your company; they're eventually gonna either claim that chip in gold - or do something risky in the initial phase of this relation forming. In his culture, this was called a power move. Since the law has an extensively amount of stakes in the company, this ultimatum was going to lead the direction moving forward. Whether the union cowered and allowed the suggestion of not raising the prices of their supply any further. Noels assistance was required in the legal sense, counseling and giving advise. Given these factors, they could legally pay him to aid this company. Noel drafted up a contract real quick, so that the union leader can fill in a request for his help. When he was done drafting it, Jet flew over his shoulder real quick while holding a pencil with his feet. This caused a one to be added to his asking number.

Noel didn't know, of course - the union leader happily agreed to the number Noel was requesting to aid them in this task. As soon as the autograph was set, Noel began rattling like a gattling gun shouting off ideas and different stratagems - modus operandi and tactics. Their first option, as described as Noel as being a power move, truly was one. They could go rogue - discard their losses from the loss of the innovation bond; up their prices to make up for the difference. Though hypothetically, this could be an elaborate attack on the company funded by the aristocrats. They may have overbought to make a supply; giving their customers only ten percent of what they buy to be able to supply them for a couple of months. Why? Noel waited for his half up front - a custom he's grown ever since taking requests from outside sources.

The union leader curiously looked at Noel; somewhat angry that he wasn't finishing his train though verbally - and if he was a girl, he'd be considered a whore; an information whore. The union leader knew of his custom and handed half the money up front. This allowed Noel to continue and finish his train of thought. Noel explained that supposedly if these aristocrats were saving up their goods; they could expect the company to increase the price if they went with option one. And use this as a reason to not import their goods anymore, while supplying their customers with what they currently have stored. Naturally the company will have to search for other customers, it'll be weakened during this search. This way, five months down the line they're going to buy the company out - and enjoy it at a much cheaper price. This was the disadvantage Noel could think of quickly.

He then went on to explain the consequences of option two, according to his own interpretation. Only raising their price to match inflation is quite outrageous; the aristocrats were very likely inflating their prices - as they most likely shared the monopoly that the union was accused of. Which very well could be used against them - though in that case, like with option one, it'd mean that their prices were to be locked down as well. Mutual destruction. Of course, for the aristocrats this business was growing in its prevalence. And rather fast; partially due to their own influence and wealth. 'Too big to fail', the company hadn't quite reached that status - but those aristocrats certainly had. They could take a financial hit if that could mean massive financial gains in the long term. Noel ordered another icebergian coffee while talking with the union leader. Since it was clear that they were going to be in this lobby for quite a while, he decided to also order breakfast. A simple Joyan breakfast; rice in a bowl and a side of oil fried sardines.

So what could they do in return? The union leader casted his doubts on either one of the choices. Noel called out these doubts, and verified that he should have doubts. Neither of these two options were appealing to the company - who'd just experienced its first spur of growth. There were a couple of options the company could take. What the law presided was just a box - and they needed to think outside of it. Of course, his first suggestion was to raise a compromise to the law. Their ultimatum was a threat; not what a judge had decided. It didn't hold very sturdy legal ground in the first place. By raising this issue to court, and having a judge look over it might decide a complete different outcome. Though reality was that they were in a position of a monopoly. So their case wasn't very strong a judge. It was likely they were going to get penalized even more harshly if a judge looked over the case. That's why their initial move is a total power move, they likely know that the union knows this. So from the get-go, the decision already put them in a pit facing an attack dog with no weapons to defend themselves. Noel was going to be that weapon. His information was the shield.

Instead of directly representing them in court, Noel gave information that the union leader was going to be able to use to form a strategy against this obvious attack on their interests. His only goal was the growth of his company and financial stability. Though to get through these first phases of financial security; one had to thread a more rocky path that ultimately led them to this security. If they went with option one and decided their own prices, they could start marking their products with their own mark. Given that they organize the wholesale of their goods in house. Where they have control.

Noel continued explaining his idea about how they could secure this plan. While munching into his rice with chopsticks as utensils, he'd go on and explain the efficacy albeit somewhat grey moral legal ground if they publicize this change widely. So that the old ones in circulation, without a mark, lose their value - meaning the customers of the aristocrats might want switch over to the newer version. One that carried a brand. This way the reputation of the company was to increase; should the quality of the goods produced by them improve to a new plateau than this was certainly going to be the case. They even could go as far as calling their old product knock-offs, and thats where Noel breached the topic of the grey legal area that they'd find themselves in.

If they preferred the alternative, the second choice then they could adopt another strategy where they change the products that they create while upholding the good reputation of the business. Switch from watches to earrings for example - if it was an industry which already had a small representation of supply than this was even better. With the quality of their goods, and the idea of locally made means better, they should recover pretty quickly from these sanctions composed by the local government. They were likely being controlled by the aristocrats anyway. Noel was quite cynical, so he didn't doubt this. The union leader wasn't sure about this plan and wanted to bring in someone else to ask for their opinion on Noels take. This was going to take a bit to organize, so Noel proposed to the union leader that they have a walk towards the aristocrats that were their loyal customers. The adviser of the union leader joined them a few minutes later, of course Noel had paid for the tab at the hotel lobby. Noel re-explained his story in a more organized manner to the other advisor of the union leader. He was quite entertained by the ideas that Noel had come up. Their ideas were much more defensive than what Noel thought of.

They too thought that they could invoke the price fixing of the aristocrats wholesale as well - impacting both businesses and fighting a battle of attrition. Noel rejected the idea, explaining how they underestimated the attrition they were facing versus the attrition by the aristocrats. The advisor admitted that Noel had a point. They had a walk around their neighborhood and headed back into downtown where they sat at a coffee store, the advisor had brought over some of the letters that were sent by the local government. It stipulated a couple of things the union leader had omitted from initial version of explaining the case to Noel. It was much more complicated than it initially appeared to be. It was tricky to find a sweetspot. Since the union leader was sort of looking for one answer - one strategy, Noel carefully read through the lines of the documents sent by Myras City. Trying to find if they had an hidden meaning underneath them. Some stipulation that impacted more than initially seemed.

After reading the entire gospel of legalyse, Noel threw his head back and stared off into the distance. He adviced the union leader to go with option one, break out of the innovation bond and start developing other products - ask to reacquire the innovation based on those other products; this way they would still be able to use a part of this budget to expand their business and build financial power. If the aristocrats stop buying their supply, start marking their new goods with their own brand and market it to a wide audience that this has changed in order to devaluate the stored produce that the aristocrats are most likely keeping to themselves as a trump card. They shouldn't allow them to manipulate the business direction of their union. It obviously tried to gain as much profit as it could, while the workers are happy. The union leader took Noels advice, and a few days later returned at the hotel lobby to talk about the outcome of his decision and what impact it had in the real world.

Option one, which broke them free of the innovation bond that ironically gave them freedom initially was now nothing but a former crutch. The companies legs were strong enough to afford such a blow. Losing a budget like this meant that they naturally had to increase the price of their product. And as soon as they did so, they changed some of the materials they previously used - the boys from marketing called it more durable, 'military grade' and all sorts of new age nonsense that made it way more appealing than their previous iterations. It was marked as well, making it very tricky for the aristocrats to refuse their business as these new produce were going to increase their margin as well. Though the union leader imposed a limit of how much could be bought by a single customer, abuse of this meant a trading ban with said customer. Due to the nature of this company heading towards a more legal side, it quickly became a hallmark for new Myras companies to look at the one Noel assisted ever so dearly with up to this point to figure out their own way of conduct. It appeared that they set quite some legal precedents concerning trade - which in turn caused a few other companies in the region to move to Myras for.

Their legal laws concerning trade weren't lax, or very strict either. What those companies wanted assurance; due to a lack of legal laws concerning trade in other places they were living in insecurity. While if you traded in Myras, your limitations as a company were much clearer - allowing craft people to find loopholes more easily. Not Noel though, not this time. His advice paid off quite well, and the union leader gave him the other half of the bag at the end of the week. He was quite confident they were going to meet again.
