Vampires, werewolves, and ghosts, oh my.

If it wasn’t one terror today chances are they’d show up at your doorstep the next day here in Dahlia. Nadine was already getting sick of this godforsaken place. This would be the second time that she came out to Aldenwald to clear out a few lycans, and even then she didn’t think that it would ultimately help in the end. As much as the rune knights pushed for justice and peace they were easily ignoring a lot of the bad areas of this country. Nadine had to wonder why that was the case, but she could draw up no decent argument in her head.

So the dirty work fell unto freelancers like herself. Trudging through the Aldenwald woods in the middle of the night. Acting as bait. Although, walking off from the village with fresh slabs of raw beef wasn’t a bad deal at all.

Her camp wasn’t too far off the beaten trail through the woods. From the main path you could probably see her campfire going, and the small tent she had set up. Cooking gear had been put up over the fire, and as a steak was sizzling away Nadine was already eating another she had finished cooking. She wasn’t naive enough to think that her presence had gone unnoticed, and she didn’t need her night vision to know that there were things lurking in the woods around herself.

She didn’t have to wait long for someone to take the bait. Heavy footfalls stomped their way towards Nadine’s camp at a rapid pace. One from the left, and another from behind. As she stood up from her seat she decided it was time to go to work. Snapping the fingers of one hand she made a green magic seal appear over her hand as she took a look around. Sure enough, two brutes of werewolves were closing in fast. She wasn’t sure who the alpha was in this case, but if they were both attacking her at once then she supposed it didn’t matter who she killed first.

“Hungry, huh? Yeah, I know that feeling,” she called out as she slipped her gloves over her hands. In a quick motion she then grabbed the steak that had been cooking and flung it towards one of the werewolves. It didn’t surprise her to see the beast make a dive for the piece of meat, but that wouldn’t keep it distracted for long.

The second werewolf made a lunge for her. Nadine lunged as well, but to the side instead to avoid the sweeping claws. She kept her forward momentum going, running and leading the beast away from its partner. The rabid abomination gave chase, howling and growling after the demi-human.

Weaving through the trees and bushes Nadine could hear the angry beast behind herself. She didn’t keep the chase long, though. She stopped behind a large oak tree thinking it’d make a decent ambush spot. On cue, the werewolf came tearing through the foliage at a full sprint running past the tree. Before it could get too far Nadine lunged and grabbed onto its tail with both hands. Digging her heels into the dirt she skidded behind the creature before it came to a sudden stop. As the beast started to turn around Nadine pulled hard and flung the werewolf back towards the tree before letting go.

The werewolf was just getting back up on its feet as the demi-human laid into its snout with a heavy punch, smashing its nose in. When it tried to strike back she would catch the offending limb in both hands and violently twist it out of rotation until both arms were broken. Crushing its throat with repeated punches sealed the creature’s fate, and Nadine would leave it to suffer and writhe on the ground as it suffocated.

The woman had just stepped back to catch her breath when she heard the sound of something running again. As she turned she barely had enough time to defend herself as the remaining werewolf tackled her to the ground.

A clawed hand pinned her back against the dirt as malicious eyes stared down at her from above. She had its other hand held back by the wrist, but her free hand was pinned beneath herself. The werewolf seemed to like the fact that its prey seemed powerless. Then Nadine’s boot suddenly kicked upwards between its legs. The resulting yelp would have made her chuckle if it wasn’t for the five claws stabbing into her chest. With the werewolf caught off guard though she found enough wiggle room to kick the creature off of herself and scramble to her feet.

The werewolf lashed out with its claws, and Nadine responded with a fist, smashing its fingers. She then kicked again, bringing the toe of her boot up into its lower jaw to stab its lolling tongue between its own teeth.

“If you were the last werewolf in Dahlia that’d make me very happy,” she said irritably as she kicked again to keep the werewolf on the ground. “But there’s always more of you, isn’t there? And you just can’t keep your hands to yourselves!” Another kick splattered one of the creature’s eyes, and its pained howls only made Nadine stomp on its skull harder.

She couldn’t help but wonder how Fiore’s king could let a place like Dahlia continue to torment his people.

After killing the second werewolf Nadine made her way back to her camp. As expected it had been ransacked, but thankfully it had all been supplies from the village that had sent her here to begin with. The scattered items had been torn through, and it looked like any remaining food she had for this job had been eaten or joined the litter on the ground. Not for the first time, Nadine wondered what werewolf meat might taste like as she sat herself down by the fire to warm up. Blood caked her gloves, but there was little point in removing them.

Staring into the cackling flames she thought again about the poor state this area was in. In a region where Magnolia and Hosenka called its home, how could a place get so bad like Dahlia? Last she checked there were a couple guilds in Eastern Fiore: Fairy Tail, and Empyrean Divine. Then there were the Rune Knights, too.

No, Dahlia couldn’t have been an accident. Not for this long.

“What a useless king,” she muttered to herself before standing up. Now that her job was done it was time to head back to the village to claim her reward. Taking out the main hunters of the pack should be enough for now. If they wanted the rest of the pack gone they could do it themselves.
